“He really is,” Harry agreed, finding that Sirius became better the more context one had. His gaze followed Draco’s towards the garden. “With how everything played out, and all the fostering they’ve done, I think he regrets not taking Regulus with him when he left.”
Harry took another drag of the cigarette. These were things he’d thought a lot about himself, never really having an opportunity to discuss these things with any of the other foster kids Remus and Sirius had brought to the house. In every sense Draco felt different, closer in both age and relation.
“If you’d ask, I’m sure he’d tell you as much, too,” he felt compelled to add after a moment, not wanting Draco to get the impression that Harry was divulging secrets on Sirius’ behalf.
His attention returned onto Draco, a reassuring smile reappearing on his lips. “He shares all of this pretty willingly, if you know what to ask; but please trust me they’re in no rush for you to leave. He’s really happy you’re here.”

Draco nodded slowly at that, taking another drag from his cigarette and letting the smoke fill his lungs as he thought about what Harry was telling him. It was all just a lot to take in and Draco felt overwhelmed by all the care that was being shown him.
“Thank you, Harry,” he said in a soft voice, turning his attention back to Harry and trying to find a proper facial expression to properly express how he was feeling.
“Thank you for telling me this.”

When Draco turned towards him, it felt like the first time they had actually looked eye to eye in this conversation. It made Harry’s smile widen and his eyes crinkle, happy with what he was seeing in Draco’s expression - happy to have shared, too.
“Of course,” he said, earnestly.
Raising his cigarette to his lips, Harry stalled before taking a drag, his smile pulling into a grin, halfway in the shadow of his own hand. “It’s only fair’ you know; you’re family.”

Draco almost choked at that, surprised by how genuine Harry was sounding in his statement.
He knew that yes, he was related to Sirius and that would technically make Harry some kind of family as well, but it was entirely different to hear it said out loud.
“Right,” he stated, clearly not entirely prepared to believe that.
Everything that had happened since Draco managed to track down Sirius just seemed so surreal and he was honestly having a hard time wrapping his had around all of it.
“Family.”

“Hiya,” Harry called absentmindedly into the void of the foyer as he locked himself into his childhood home.
Having only passed by Grimmauld Place to unload his bag from work before heading out for pints, Harry didn’t expect an answer. The house was quiet around him, and being a Friday at the beginning of the month, Harry expected his fathers to be out themselves, too; either for dinner, drinks or both.
Pretty undeterred by the calm, Harry continued mindlessly, slinking off his rucksack in the foyer. “Anyone here?”

Draco was sitting in the kitchen, staring blankly at his phone, which laid on the kitchen table in front of him, continuously vibrating with calls and messages from Peter. Draco didn’t want to talk to him, finding that he had absolutely nothing to say to his boyfriend when he had thought that betraying Draco’s trust like that would ever be a good idea.
Even the thought of his act was enough to make Draco’s stomach churn, feeling certain that he was about to keel over at any second, but more than anything else he just felt completely empty.
He had no idea how long he had been sitting there, just staring accusingly at his phone, when Harry’s voice pulled him out of his reverie, but in some way it was a blessed relief.
While he hadn’t managed to get a whole lot more of alone time with Harry, the two of them had still managed to become something akin to friends and the idea that he might not have to be alone, even if Sirius and Remus were on a date night that Draco was keen not to disturb, washed over Draco with such a sense of relief that he almost felt like crying.
“Kitchen.”

Having already turned back towards the door, Harry nearly stumbled over his own feet as he twisted back towards the unexpected sound of Draco’s voice.
“Mate,” Harry called in a surprised greeting, the airiness betraying his near-fall.
Regaining his footing, Harry kicked off his shoes for a quick hello. He was still wearing his jacket when he ventured inside, taking an arched path to the stairs in order to turn on the living room lights as he passed.
“Didn’t think you’d be here, the house’s pitch black,” he said as he went down the stairs. “How are you?”

It was almost jarring to hear Harry be so jolly when Draco himself felt so utterly torn apart, left feeling at a complete and utter loss. It was a welcome distraction when he heard Harry’s footsteps on the stair to the kitchen, feeling a little bad about wanting to unload on him, but he knew that he couldn’t sit with it alone.
“Been better,” he stated as he looked up and away from his phone, knowing that the messages hadn’t gotten less daunting and he really wasn’t in a headspace to answer any of them anyway.
“Sorry if I spooked ya.”

“No harm done, just didn’t expect it,” Harry dismissed, ducking to peer into the kitchen before fully descending the stairs.
The easy smile he was wearing, the invitation for Draco to join him out for a pint already on his lips, washed away at the sight that met him. The mere fact that Draco was already looking towards the stairwell, and how quickly their gazes met, was striking enough, and still it paled in comparison to the grim expression on Draco’s face.
Harry’s speed slowed for the next few steps, not in discomfort but in hesitation, having to curb his own instinct to dart towards Draco. For what they had gotten to know about each other, Harry didn’t know this.
“Hey, are you alright?” Harry said, hand still on the bannister as he took the last step.

There was something extremely disarming about the way Harry seemed to flip like a switch when he saw that Draco seemed to be upset. It made something warm bloom in his chest, feeling a little bad about how clear of a read he had apparently been, but also feeling so very cared for that it almost made him weep.
“Not really,” he answered honestly, his phone starting it’s aggressive vibrating again. It was lying face down but Draco knew that it was displaying Peter’s name.
“I’ve found out who leaked those photos to The Sun,” he stated, feeling sick to his stomach at the idea of saying it out loud but also finding that he wanted to be able to tell Harry.

Harry felt like gravity had shifted in that moment, feeling it like a tug at the pit of his stomach.
For how prevalent this whole ordeal had been in the time Draco had been here, always close beneath the surface of their interactions and conversations, Harry had genuinely not considered there to be a someone. He realised how naive he had been to have considered it all just a case of bad luck; of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Now that Draco had offered that piece of the puzzle up, Harry realised he might have a guess. He took a few slow steps towards the dining table.
“His parents?” he said with soft melancholy, halfway between a guess and a statement; an attempt to bridge the gap to Draco, who seemed barely able to get the words out himself.

Draco shook his head at that, knowing that it was a good guess and a part of Draco almost wished that that was the case. If it had just been Peter’s parents then he likely would have been able to move on with their relationship at least somewhat intact, but this had left him entirely floor and feeling uncertain of what to do.
“He staged it,” he said, unsure if he was making a whole lot of sense, but he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t actually be able to say the words properly.
He felt sick to his stomach, feeling so completely and utterly like an idiot for ever thinking that Peter would be fine with the way that things were going.
“He doesn’t even think he did anything wrong,” he added, finding the entirely situation almost laughable in its absurdity.

Harry - whose expression had already softened into a disappointed exhaustion when he believed guilt to be placed on the in-laws - felt a brief lick of anger flicker across his expression, when Draco instead pinned it onto Peter.
Not a stranger to bigoted, older generations, Harry found himself far less prepared to accept Peter being at fault, realising he had expected far better from him.
He did?” Harry parroted, the anger bleeding into genuine shock.
His eyes darted across Draco’s expression, soaking in the hurt there that was so clearly visible. Harry’s mouth fell open a moment before continuing, at a complete loss as to what to say. “You’re kidding.”

The outrage that Harry carried so clearly on his face did a lot to alleviate the knot that had taken such deep roots in Draco’s stomach. He still felt more than a little stupid and naive for having trusted Peter so blindly, but having someone to share the outrage with helped a lot to make him feel less so.
“Wish I was,” he said, running his hands over his face as if he would be able to rub the feelings out of his skull.
“Do you want to know how I found out?” Draco asked finding that he didn’t actually want to talk about it, but a part of him wanted to see the further outrage that he felt certain Harry would eagerly provide him.
“Because it is the stupidest things I’ve experienced in a while.”

“****, do I?” Harry breathed immediately, almost a laugh.
Like many other bad break ups, Harry was frankly dying to know the gritty details of it, especially given the way Draco was speaking of it. Still, it felt like a dangerous line to cross, should Draco and Peter figure things out.
After merely a moment's consideration, Harry realised it was a risk he was willing to take. “Yeah, go on.”
Rather than join Draco by the table, Harry turned towards the refrigerator when he came out of his immediate stupor. Every hurry he had when he arrived the Grimmauld had immediately left him, instead looking for a snack and a drink to bridge the gap.
Opening the refrigerator, Harry pushed aside the abundance of opened jam jars to find a few solitary glass bottles, before glancing back over at Draco. “Do you want a lager?”

Even if Draco had offered to tell Harry how he had found out that Peter had been the one to sell him out, he found himself woefully unprepared as to how he would even start his tale.
“Please,” he said, looking over at Harry by the fridge, as if that would somehow reveal to him how his life had ended up in the mess that he currently found it.
“Honestly, I barely know where to start,” he stated as he ran a hand over his hair.
“I went to lunch with him today after my classes and he seemed awfully chipper.”

Plucking out two glass bottles with one hand, Harry also snagged a plastic packet of cherry tomatoes before pushing the door shut. Despite his puttering, Harry’s attention remained on Draco, his eyes constantly drifting towards him even as he rummaged through a kitchen drawer for a bottle opener.
Placing the tomatoes between them, Harry finally took a seat across from Draco.
“Uh huh,” he encouraged, as he opened the first bottle. The tone of his reply subtly betrayed the immediate sense of unease Harry felt at Peter’s mood being described as chipper.
Leaning forward, Harry pushed it across the table for Draco to take.

Draco gratefully accepted the beer in front of him, taking a sip and using the brief break to consider where he wanted to go next.
He knew that Harry wouldn’t be pushy and somehow that made him want to share even more. There was a certain kind of safety in the men who called Grimmauld place their home and Draco was so unused to it that he was regularly left without knowing which leg to stand on.
“I can’t even remember how it came up, but he started talking about marriage and how it might be something we should consider now that we don’t have to hide anymore,” he stated, placing the beer in front of him on the table as he spoke, slowly turning the bottle between his hands to keep himself distracted.
“I will admit that I wasn’t keen but didn’t discourage him, so he kept talking himself into a frenzy about it, apparently convinced that I was as keen as he,” he continued, his eyes firmly on the bottle in front of him as he started peeling at a corner of the label.
“Then he started talking about engagement photos, and how he wanted to hire the guy who took the photos in the sun seeing as ‘he did such a good job last time.’”

Cracking open the second bottle, Harry hooked a finger into the plastic container of cherry tomatoes and settled himself in his chair with both within reach.
He could have spared himself the effort; as if resurrected, Harry leaned forward again immediately at the mention of marriage. Knowing where the story ended, that was a hell of a start.
Harry’s expression was one of incredulous shock, a shadow of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, threatening to make him laugh out loud with sheer surprise.
“**** off,” he gaped, equal measures an invitation to go on; he hadn’t even touched his beer by then. “The tabloid pap?”

“That’s the real kicker though,” Draco stated, having talked himself warm by now and feeling encouraged by the obvious outrage on Harry’s face. Part of him had been convinced that he was overreacting, even if Pansy had gone to great lengths to assure him that he wasn’t, it was comforting to see someone react in real time.
“Apparently,” he said, his tone exaggerated in a way that he barely recognised himself, “he is a real photographer and not just a pap, and someone had hired him specifically to take photos of us to announce our relationship to the world.”
The words tasted bitter on Draco’s tongue as they left his mouth and he tried to wash down the taste with the bottle of beer in front of him with little success.
“Three guesses as to who hired him and got a deal with the sun.”
