Draco hadn’t entirely thought it through when he accepted the offer to go out and smoke, just desperately needing the distraction. There was something relieving in getting to grab his shoes and his coat, sheepishly returning the grin that Harry was flashing him as he did.
“Not yet no, hasn’t really been the weather for it,” he said, having really not had the mind space to do much exploring of the townhouse at Grimmauld place.

“Yeah,” Harry agreed with an airy chuckle as they stopped in the chillier conservatory at the back of the house.
Dropping his boots with a smack against the brick flooring, he toed into them without lacing them, already thoughtlessly stuffing his hands in his coat pockets.
“It’s far nicer when it’s in season -” he said, when he once again met Draco’s eye with a smile. “You can look forward to it.”
With his pack of cigarettes pinched between his palm and the doorknob, Harry opened the door to the terrace and out to the garden. Long and narrow, the space was still an incredible luxury for the location of the home, and even with the plants dying back for winter, Harry had many affectionate thoughts to spare for the garden.
“Didn’t realise you smoked,” he instead offered conversationally, glancing back at Draco as he tipped the iron garden chairs, brushing leaves off of their seats.

There was something very soothing about Harry’s smalltalk, making Draco feel like he was finally getting a break from talking about the deeper stuff and could just focus on some mindless getting to know each other babble.
Draco followed Harry outside and though it was dark and dead now he could vividly imagine how it would be come spring. It was a soothing thought that it seemed to be a given that he would still be around by then and while he tried not to overthink it Draco stuck to that though like a talisman.
“I don’t really,” he stated as he fished his own pack out of his pocket, having picked up the habit ages ago of having a pack of cigarettes in his pocket, just in case he should feel like he needed it.
“Started around exam season and now it’s become a habit, you know?”

Taking a seat, Harry stole a few glances towards Draco, his smile growing more crooked each time.
“Yeah? Which season?” he asked with a grin, no real bite to his tease. Pinning a cigarette between his lips to light it, Harry momentarily leaned back and twisted, exhaling while slightly turned away from Draco, an old habit of smoking around friends who don’t.
Stretching forward again, Harry slid his lighter across the garden table towards Draco, eyes bright with attention.
“Just the most recent one?”

Draco sat down as well, as usual taken by just how carefree Harry seemed, feeling an inkling of jealousy at the display.
He picked up the lighter with a sheepish grin, placing a cigarette between his lips and placing his pack on the table before lighting it.
“I wish,” he stated with a huff of smoke, putting the lighter back down on the table between the two of them.
“The very first one,” he added, looking out at the garden with a contemplative look on his face, trying to imagine how it would have been to grow up in a place like this, both as Sirius and as Harry. “Medical school is hard.”

“I don’t doubt it,” Harry easily and readily agreed. Surely, people had done a lot more and a lot worse things to cope with the stress of university than picking up a smoking habit; if any, Harry was impressed if that was enough for Draco to cope with it.
“They both smoked when they were younger,” he offered after a breath, nodding backwards towards the house as though there were any doubts as to who he was referring to. A fond smile pulled at his lips, even though he tried not to let it slip.
“They might make a fuss, now, but don’t let them convince you they’re guilt free.”

Once again, Draco was struck by the familiarity with which Harry spoke of his two fathers, indicating a much more intimate relationship than Draco had ever been allowed with his own parents.
No matter how many times he had experienced it so far, it always managed to send Draco’s head spinning, wondering how he had managed to go on for so long without that type of connection in his life and desperately jealous of the people who had had it.
“Former smokers are usually the most holy of them all,” he said with a shrug, trying not to give away too much of his own inner turmoil.

Leaning forward towards the table, Harry ashed his cigarette in the old china sugar bowl that had become an ashtray.
“They’re just trying to parent you,” Harry assured Draco preemptively and almost thoughtlessly, looking over at him with an easy smile.
It had taken Sirius and Remus to start fostering kids when Harry was in his mid-teens for it to truly become apparent just how entirely second nature it was to them, and how, most of the time, they didn’t even realise they were doing it. Harry had seen it with every other kid passing through the house, and he saw it clear as day in the ways his fathers had taken to Draco.

While Draco wasn’t blind to the way that Sirius and Remus had been doting on him, it felt different to hear Harry tell him that that was indeed what they were doing.
Draco took another drag of the cigarette as he tried to take it all in, still not quite certain where his future was going to take him, so while it seemed difficult to believe that these people, who were still essentially strangers to Draco, were willing to help him, he really did try to let it sink it.
“That’s really not the kind of parenting I am used to,” Draco stated with a shrug, not wanting to talk down his life too much, but he also finally felt free to talk about his parents and the way that they had treated him.

The same easy smile remained on Harry’s lips as he watched Draco take a drag. For the sympathy he felt for Draco, it barely showed on his expression, aware of the fact that Draco might interpret it at pity. He allowed Draco’s statement to exist between them, acknowledging it despite not commenting on it.
“It’s their style,” he said instead. He didn’t want to in any way diminish what Draco was telling him, having no authority on Draco’s upbringing. He did, however, felt compelled to reassure him of the fact that ways of parenting could differ.
“I can recognize it from a mile off,” Harry added with a growing grin, eyes glancing off towards the garden.
He, too, took a drag of his cigarette, exhaling before continuing. “Sirius really likes you.”

The comment was so sweet and lovely and it immediately punched the air out Draco’s lungs.
He hadn’t really given himself time enough to settle into his new living situation to really consider how any of the men felt about him. There had simply been too much but to hear Harry speak so candidly about it made him feel all kinds of things that he couldn’t quite voice.
“They are good people,” was the only response Draco could really get out, staring blankly out into the dark garden, fearing that his emotions might betray if he were to actually look over at Harry; knowing him well enough by now to know that he was likely painfully sincere in his statement.

Harry’s eyes returned onto Draco, though it didn’t surprise him to find that the other was looking towards the garden.
“They really are,” he agreed, wholly and entirely.
Not wanting to burden Draco with his gaze, Harry followed Draco’s, trying to look at the garden through his perspective. He had an inkling that Draco wasn’t just looking at the garden, though, but at things far bigger than that.
“People have been really good to them, too,” he added after a moment, propelled by the fact that they weren’t looking at each other any more. “I think they’re still trying to repay it.”

Draco hummed softly at that, knowing amazingly little about his mother’s cousin, but he did know that Sirius had to have gotten help from somewhere. How that translated into having to help Draco, he couldn’t really tell, but he was grateful for the help he had gotten.
“I’ll get out of their hair soon enough though,” he stated as he took another drag from the cigarette, not wanting to overstay his welcome.
Sirius and Remus, and honestly Harry as well, had done nothing but make him feel welcome and cared for, but Draco couldn’t help but feel that he was a burden on the men and he didn’t want to accidentally sour this new relation he had managed to find.
“Wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome.”

Harry looked over at Draco. Despite the sound of his melancholy, Harry couldn’t help but smile, doing his best to shadow it with his hand as he raised his cigarette, looking back out towards the garden.
“You’re misunderstanding me,” Harry said, taking a drag.
Using the pause, he weighed his words before continuing after the exhale.
“It’s been really good for Sirius to have you around,” Harry instead started, feeling like he could dare to say as much.
It felt a little daunting to speak on Sirius’ behalf on his father in this way, but if Draco’s take-away from it was that he was overstaying his welcome, Harry felt obliged to dispel that assumption. “I think you being here is helping him work through things he didn’t know where else to put.”

The inherent kindness of Harry’s statement was enough to make Draco choke up slightly, knowing that Harry really didn’t have to share any of this information with him, in fact maybe he shouldn’t, yet it seemed to lift some of the weight from Draco’s shoulders.
While Sirius clearly had a great life now, it didn’t take a lot of creativity for Draco to imagine how the earlier parts of Sirius’ life had gone down, and yet that hadn’t really connected to anything that could have anything to do with Harry himself.
“You think so?” Draco asked, finally turning his head to look over at Harry, wanting to be able to see his face properly.
Obviously, Harry would know Sirius better than anyone else, having grown up with the man as his father, however it just seemed too good to be true for Draco, still not quite daring to believe that something that, like this, could ever truly be for him.

Feeling the weight of Draco’s gaze, Harry turned to meet it as he shifted forward; for the moment he looked at Draco, Harry's smile was open and affirming, a wordless agreement.
Dropping his gaze towards the table, Harry smothered the last few embers of his cigarette into the sugar bowl.
“You know about Regulus,” he said, more an assumption than a question, though Harry couldn’t know for sure. It was a different approach to the same subject, but even Harry became aware of easing the spotlight off of Draco, not wanting him to feel like the eternal topic of their conversation.
Reaching for his pack, Harry picked out another cigarette, but failed to light it, instead turning it between his hands to busy his fingers.
“Has he talked to you about James?” he said, leaning back into his seat. His eyes found Draco again, though his attention was divided between him and the cigarette, idly turning it in his hands. “My da.”

While Sirius had briefly mentioned Harry’s dad he had never said anything more concrete.
Draco was indeed intrigued by his cousin’s trek from being a part of the noble house of Black to being who he was right now, something that Draco had hoped that he would be able to uncover over time. However, now Harry was offering the information up willingly and that seemed even more intriguing.
“He’s mentioned him,” he stated, finishing his own cigarette in the ashtray and mirroring Harry in grabbing a new one for himself as well.

Watching Draco pick out another cigarette, Harry considered lighting the one between his hands, if nothing else to keep Draco company for another, finding that that better allowed the conversation to broaden.
“They went to school together,” Harry started, unsure just how brief Sirius had been with Draco about James. “My dad and his family took him in when he ran away from here.”
Cigarette still unlit, Harry used it to gesture it back towards the house. He shifted forward after that to reach for the lighter, after all deciding that he could do with another.
“He - both my parents - passed when I was about a year old,” he went on.
Placing the cigarette between his lips, Harry lit it, taking the pause to consider his words. More than upset, Harry was at best contemplative.
“When I say Sirius is still working towards repaying a lot of the good he’s gotten, I sometimes think raising me has helped him pay off some kind of debt to my dad,” he said after exhaling, more of a reflection than a definitive statement. “And I think you being here is helping him sort out a lot of the things he feels like he still owes Regulus.”

As Harry spoke, Draco reached forward for the lighter, appreciating having something to do with his hands while Harry was letting him into the history of his mother’s cousin. It felt a little like intruding, like he was prying into a past that was better left uncovered, but he couldn’t deny how much the news eased his mind.
He blew out a huff of smoke, letting the idea of Sirius needing to repay anything properly circulate in his brain as he looked at Harry, almost as if he was trying to see if he was pulling his leg.
“He’s a very good man,” Draco settled on as his gaze once again fell upon the garden.
It made some semblance of sense that Sirius would do what he could to bring good into the world, but Draco really didn’t know how to feel about being a vessel for that.
