The force with which the recognition was spat out took Draco so much by surprise that he was left even more lost than he had been when he got there. He couldn’t help but feel a certain sense of pride in the comparison, feeling so grateful for everything that Sirius had already done to help him that the familial comparison hadn’t even crossed his mind.
It made him feel a little self conscious but it was so obvious that it was a flattering comparison that Draco couldn’t do anything other than take it as a compliment.
“Yeah, the Black family genes are strong,” Draco explained, his cheeks definitely hotter than they had been just moments ago.

“No, yeah, congratulations on that, you’re stunning,” Parvati went on, good humoured, undeterred by Seamus’ snicker from across the table. “What? We’re all thinking it.”
Interjecting across it, Ron rose from his seat, the scrape of his chair being pushed backwards interrupting whatever Seamus tried to argue. Leaning across the table and across several people, he offered Draco his hand to shake.
“Hi, mate, glad you could be here,” he smiled. “I’m Ron.”
With a touch to Draco’s elbow, Harry excused himself, leaving his proximity to head around to greet people. He brushed his hand across several shoulders, but only leaned in to press a kiss to Hermione’s cheek. "Hi, Mione."

Glad for the distraction, not used to receiving this much praise, Draco gratefully reached across the table to shake Ron’s hand, a polite smile playing on his smile.
“Pleasure,” he stated, trying to get over his emotional and social whiplash.
It wasn’t that he thought he was bad looking or anything, he was far too self aware for that, but he wasn’t used to anyone praising him this much for features that people had tried to make his ashamed of.
“Thanks for letting me join you,” he added, knowing that he was probably too formal for such a casual setting, but years of training had left it as muscle memory for him.

Straightening his posture, Harry's eyes skimmed over the group as he peeled off his jacket.
"Nev, move over," he asked, nodding towards the entire bench-side of the table for them to scooch over to make space for Draco.
"Draco," Harry invited for him to take the seat that was freed up.
He, himself, tossed his coat over the top of the empty chair at the table head, currently occupied primarily by several other coats and bags. "What are you having? To drink."

Being so easily involved in the group made Draco feel almost self conscious but he tried not to make too much of it, instead just shrugging off his jacket and putting it with the others before taking his instructed seat.
“I’ll just have whatever you’re having,” he stated, not interested in making too much of himself.
The group he was finding himself to be a part of was vibrant in a way that Draco hadn’t experienced before. There was no denying the chemistry and the intimacy that all of them shared and it almost served to make Draco feel like he was intruding on something that he shouldn’t have been privy to.

As the group dissolved back into chatter, Harry simply confirmed Draco’s reply with a smile and a thumbs up, before slinking off to the bar.
There was a beat of silence before Neville shifted. Almost fully shoulder to shoulder, he was only barely able to offer Draco his hand to shake, an awkward sideways gesture.
“I’m Neville,” he said with a gentle smile, the narrowness of the bench seat allowing for a quieter conversation, not even attempting to project loud enough for others to hear him.
Tipping his chin, he gestured after Harry. “I went to teachers college with Harry.”

The attention from the guy sitting next to him took Draco a little aback, having expected to mostly just observe and he honestly wouldn’t have minded that too much. However, there was also a relief in talking to someone who wasn’t Harry, feeling more like he belonged there.
“Nice to meet you, Neville,” Draco stated as he shook his hand, feeling an odd sense of calm wash over him, finding that maybe he would be able to just have a completely calm evening with Harry and his friends.
“I would introduce myself, but Harry already did that for me.”

Letting his hand fall back into his lap, Neville looked Draco over with interest; like Parvati had pointed out, the resemblances to Harry’s godfather were striking, and still Neville couldn’t help but go looking for the ways that the two men differed.
Draco was right, in a sense, but Neville could probably place Draco in that upper percentage of society by sight alone. Especially compared to the grit of the pub, Draco looked nice and neat, finding the contrast quite charming.
“Introduce yourself, anyway,” he said with a shrug, his smile growing wider.

The request surprised Draco slightly but it also seemed like a life boat had been dropped down to him.
Harry had been vague on what exactly it was about Draco that he had shared with his friends, so the chance to make a proper introduction seemed a welcome one.
“I’m Draco,” he started, trying not to feel silly about repeating what Harry had already told the group but Neville seemed nice and open, which helped soothe is frayed nerves.
“I met Harry through Sirius, who is my mother’s cousin,” he elaborated, “and I study medicine at Oxford.”

Despite the buzz of the bar, Neville’s attention remained easily on Draco. He had already spent a few hours in the company of year-long friends, and Draco seemed a little nervous, even talking to Neville alone. A gentle smile pulled at his lips, wanting to ease that worry.
“Yeah?” he encouraged, as though Harry hadn’t already told as much. Neville found that it beared repeating, anyway. “How are you liking it?”

The longer Draco was talking to Neville the more he felt himself become at ease, finding Neville to be easy to be easy to talk to and finding that he didn’t feel the need to prove himself worthy.
He was feeling a little lost in the group without Harry there, but he found that focusing on just the one conversation made it easier to let go of some of the turmoil he had been feeling since lunch.
“I love it,” he stated with a soft smile, genuinely passionate about his studies even if he had been pressured by his parents to pick medicine in the first place. “I am planning to become an oncologist.”

Mirroring Draco’s smile, Neville’s own instinctively widened.
“Oh, nice,” he said, meaning it, although he would probably be impressed in equal measures by any other speciality. What stood out to him was Draco’s immediate display of genuine interest in his field.
“That’s so good to hear. I did my bachelors in biology before starting teachers college.”

“Yeah?” Draco asked, interested in getting to know Harry’s friends as well. He felt endlessly grateful that Harry had decided to take him out with him and he was happy for the distraction.
“How do you like teaching?” He found himself asking, having an immense respect for those who picked that profession, but he knew that it would never be anything for him.

“Yeah, it’s good fun,” Neville said with a smile. It was still pretty new, and it had yet lost its novelty, but it was too early to tell if it was a lifelong career.
He shifted his seat, crossing his arms over his chest in a way that made him lean a little closer to Draco, as if sharing a secret from the rest of the group.
“My heart’s in botany, though, and that kinda gets drowned out in every other part of teaching, so I might revisit uni eventually. For now I just garden,” he grinned.

The longer Draco was talking to Neville the more he found himself at ease, finding him to be an easy and pleasant conversation partner. It made sense, with what Draco already knew of Harry, that his friends would be lovely as well, yet it still took him aback.
“Yeah?” Draco asked, leaning slightly forwards towards Neville, finding himself intrigued by him. “What made you get into teaching then?”

Draco’s question was a fair one, making Neville’s lip pull upward in a reluctant smile.
“I do love kids,” he admitted with what almost sounded like defeat, as though it was a terrible, hidden secret he had unveiled. “And there’s no money in botany - at least not compared to the millions of pounds I earn teaching grade school.”

Despite himself, Draco actually chuckled at that, finding it refreshing to finally get to meet some people outside of his normal social circles.
“Well, as long as you are enjoying it,” he stated, not entirely able to relate, but it was clear in the way that Neville was talking about it that he did enjoy his job, even if it might not be his dream job.

Pleased to see Draco smile at that, Neville's own grin widened. The poor guy had looked terrified when he had arrived alongside Harry, and Neville was genuinely happy to see him ease up a bit.
"Yeah," he agreed, smiling.
Over Draco's shoulders, Neville saw a familiar face filter his way back toward the table, placing another question into his mind. His eyes returned to Draco, his smile persistent as he tipped his chin in the direction of Harry. "And you're staying with Harry's dads yeah? Do you go to uni here, too?"

The first thing Harry heard when he returned to the table, arms full, was his own name; though he glanced over at Neville with a puzzled grin, he didn't comment on it, fairly sure it wasnt a questioned directed at him.
In one hand he carried a stack of empty glasses; in the other, two full jugs of beer, placing them on the table to distribute among the group.
Pinched under his arm, Harry retrieved a bottle of wine, placing that in front of Draco, a quietly offered alternative to the lager.

It almost felt a little daring to Draco to be opening up this easily to a complete stranger, even if it was one of Harry’s friends.
His life had gotten so turned around over the last couple of weeks that Draco barely knew which way was up anymore, so it was some sort of comfort to him that he at least still remembered how to enjoy things like this.
When Harry placed the bottle of wine in front him of, Draco looked at him with a warm smile, wanting to be able to showcase his gratitude right in the moment, before returning to his conversation with Neville.
“I’m staying with Sirius and Remus yes,” he stated, another wave of gratitude flowing over him as he said the words, aware of just how much they had helped him already. “I’m all the way up in Oxford for school though, but I manage.”

“That’s some commute,” Neville remarked. He understood it was out of necessity, Sirius and Remus’ house being where it was, but it felt like a drag to maintain in the long run.
“Harry’s about halfway to Oxford,” he pointed out, going for helpful, but inevitably falling into a fondly familiar tease, as his eyes darted past Draco towards Harry. “Your sofa’s quite comfortable, Haz.”

Harry had been refilling a string of glasses, only partially aware of Draco and Neville’s conversation; the comment tugged at the corner of his mouth, a reluctant grin.
“It doesn’t compete with a Victorian terraced, I’m afraid,” he forfeited, turning towards them as he finally finished pouring himself a glass, too.
Seeming to catch himself in his own phrasing, he lowered the glass before he got a chance to have a drink, wanting to offer a friendlier response. “But, you’re of course welcome, if you ever have an early class, or whatever.”
