Both elbows on the table, Harry watched Draco with bright interest, simultaneously the most marvellous and horrific thing he had ever heard. He so wished it would have happened to anybody but Draco, the proximity of it all really souring an otherwise terrific story.
“What an arse,” Harry said, straightening himself out enough to finally take a drink, though stalling the bottle a few inches from his lips, realising what he said wasn’t even close to being sufficient. “I mean, what a spectacular commitment to being a complete and utter twat.”

Harry’s response was so incredibly simple and yet Draco was absolutely floored by how comforting it was to hear his own thoughts mirrored so completely in someone else’s voice.
Despite the turmoil Draco had been feeling all day he found the corners of his mouth tugging up slightly, it was barely even a smile, yet Draco felt a lot lighter than he had when he returned to an empty Grimmauld place earlier that day.
“Yeah,” he breathed, finding the simplicity of Harry’s statements so refreshing that he almost felt like weeping from the relief.

Finally indulging in a long drink of the lager, Harry continued to peer at Draco over top of the bottle; at the sight of Draco’s little smile, the corners of Harry’s eyes crinkled in return, relieved to see it.
Lowering his bottle, there was a beat in the conversation where Harry simply processed what Draco had said to him. He helped himself to a cherry tomato in the meantime.
“I’m sorry you had to go through that,” he eventually said, realising he had yet to explicitly express his sympathies. “That has to be the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.”

The genuine in sympathy in Harry’s voice was almost too much for Draco to bear; unused to having anyone other than Pansy to share his troubles with.
The fact that Harry also found the situation to be absurd eased Draco’s mind more than he would have thought necessary, finding that his shoulders fell down from a place he hadn’t even realised he was holding them.
It was just lovely.
“It’s been a long day,” he stated, finding that he had nothing more to say about the entire thing.

A soft smile pulled at Harry’s lips, the immediate anger-then-hysteria bleeding into a gentle reassurance. It sucked, and would likely continue to suck for a while, considering the double whammy of betrayal Draco had just lived through.
“Yeah, I can imagine,” he said, turning the bottle of lager between his hands.
“How are you feeling? Is it fair to assume that you two are -?” he didn’t offer a verbal end to the question, instead scrunching his face a little; Harry intentionally didn’t want to be the one to the words in Draco’s mouth.

“Yeah,” Draco stated, not to keen to say the words out loud, but there really was no way that his relationship with Peter was going to survive this realisation.
“There’s just no way that I will ever be able to trust him again,” he elaborated, taking another sip of his beer and feeling a deep sense of comfort in knowing that Harry was going to understand. It really was incredible how easily Draco had fallen into trusting Harry, but there was just something about him that made Draco feel calm and as if it was safe to share.
“You wanna know what the actual worst part is?”

Harry did feel the dull blow of the news of a relationship ending, throughout it all still able to feel a sense of disappointment, especially on Draco’s behalf. Draco’s question, however, made a wicked little grin tug at the corner of Harry’s mouth quicker than he could suffocate the impulse.
It felt like he was being a little horrible in smiling, but part of him hoped Draco was riling him up on purpose, each added detail seeming theatrically more awful than the one preceding it.
Harry picked another tomato, hand almost at his smiling mouth before tipping his chin in an awkward little nod. “Go on.”

Draco took another sip from his beer to steel his nerves, feeling mostly calm and safe by now, however he was still quite shaken by the realisation.
“I think I knew that it was him all along,” he admitted, having kept his suspicions to himself for the most part, but it had been nagging at him ever since the news were broken to him. He hadn’t wanted to speak his suspicions out loud, finding it to be a horrific accusation, so it was a dull victory to be proven right.
“He knew from the beginning that we could never be affectionate in public, and had said that he was okay with it,” Draco explained, peeling the label on the glass bottle even further off.
“Yet that day he was very insistent on kissing me goodnight by my front door and he just wouldn’t let it go, so against my better judgement I indulged him.”

A little unexpectedly, it really was the worst bit. Harry’s smile morphed at it, softening as it fell an inch as his heart ached for what Draco had gone through. Everything that had been horrible but at least comically scandalous immediately paled and rotted.
“Yeah,” he exhaled, agreeing with Draco’s prompt - agreeing that this was the worst part. “That’s -”
The addition ended on a shaky little inhale, leaning back in his chair. His hand gripped the bottle, but his attention remained on Draco as he processed it. “I’m really sorry to hear. You deserve better than that.”

It was a simple reaction to something objectively horrifying, yet Draco found that it was much more comforting than Harry fuzzing over him or making a big thing of it. His sympathy was absolutely clear, yet Draco didn’t feel coddled, rather he just felt that someone genuinely cared about his wellbeing, which was still a strange feeling.
He was about to think of a response when his phone started vibrating on the table again. It was laid face down, yet Draco felt absolutely certain who it was going to be that was calling him and honestly he didn’t care for it.
“He hasn’t stopped calling or texting since I left.”

Harry’s eyes found the phone on the table between them, letting the hum of the call fill the room. By now it was well past dinner time, and if all of this had happened through lunch, Harry couldn’t even imagine how many calls Draco had received this afternoon.
When the phone finally fell silent, Harry took a breath, mindlessly holding it in his lungs as his attention returned to Draco.
“Would you like to go out?” he asked, the words propelled forth by his exhale. It made it all seem a little clumsy, but on Draco’s behalf, Harry needed to at least offer to create some distance between Draco’s phone and his ear.
“I came by to drop off my bag, but I was heading out for a pint with some of my friends. You could come along,” he offered, matter-of-factly but earnest in his offer. “If you’re up for it.”

The offer took Draco aback, having found that while Harry had been friendly enough with him he wasn’t sure if they were actually in a place to be going out together. He couldn’t help but feel like the offer was made out pity, however when he looked at Harry he only saw sincerity.
“Are you sure?” He asked, not wanting to intrude on Harry’s time with his friends, however the idea of getting out of the house a little greatly appealed to him.
Maybe it would be nice to get distracted for a bit and just allow himself to meet some new people who knew less of his baggage.
“I don’t wanna intrude.”

Harry’s confidence stuttered a little at Draco’s visible surprise, feeling a little unsure if he had overextended his reach, or crossing an unspoken boundary of how familiar they were supposed to be.
“We can also go somewhere just the two of us, if you’d prefer,” he offered as a correction, realising he wasn’t actually sure if he’d properly made that option available, too, although he himself considered it a given.
“But, of course you wouldn’t intrude. We all bring along new people from time to time, you’d be more than welcome,” he assured.

The offer of going out with Harry and his friends provided Draco with a wave of relief that took him by surprise; having not been sure what he wanted to do with his evening, but this seemed like the perfect course of action.
Meeting new people was a little intimidating, but Draco was slowly coming to the realisation that he was having to settle into his new life and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do just that.
“If you are absolutely certain,” Draco stated, still surprised that Harry even wanted him around, much less out and about with his friends. “Then I’d love to.”

Harry smiled at that, both relieved and excited, really believing it would be a good distraction from everything.
“I am. They’re good people,” he said and he meant it.
Presumptuous as it might be, Harry did figure his friends were of a different make than the people Draco normally associated himself with, given his school, parents and ex, but he didn’t say as much out loud, rather leaving it implied.
“I’ve already told them about you,” Harry added, a little clumsily; it wasn’t intended as a deterrent, simply wanting to give Draco context to what he was to expect, preferring to be honest upfront. “Obviously, I haven’t told them any gritty details, but I have told them about you - that you’re family. They’ll love to meet you, I’m sure.”

The fact that Harry had been talking about him to his friends took Draco a little aback, but not in a bad way. Sad at it was to even think, Draco was unused to people taking him much into consideration, so for someone who was still virtually a stranger to show him this much care was almost overwhelming.
“Yeah?” He asked, feeling a little self conscious about the entire thing, but somehow he didn’t doubt that Harry would have been flattering in his depiction of him.
“Alright then, you have convinced me,” he said in a soft voice, a tentative smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

Harry had spent the trip there giving Draco some context to the makings of the group, wanting to at least try to level the informational-playing field between them, given what his friends already knew of Draco.
By the time they came around to the pub, it was almost two hours later than Harry said he’d come. In the eyes of his friends it wouldn’t matter, used to each other coming and going, but the underground and streets were busier, and as he and Draco edged into the crowded pub, Harry was glad to know there’d already be a seat waiting for them.
“Harry!” Ron called good-humoured when their eyes met in the crowd. Made up of several tables pushed together, the table looked mercifully like a life raft at sea, his favourite people around it.
“Hey,” Harry greeted on an exhale, his smile growing wider.
As he moved to untangling his scarf, his attention kept drifting towards Draco, the smile unwaveringly bright. “Yeah, we made it. Everyone, this is Draco.”

When Harry had asked if Draco wanted to join him he had thought that it was a great idea, however now that he was making his way through a crowded pub he felt less and less certain of his decision.
Harry had spent their trip to the pub on briefing Draco on his rather large group of friends, and while Draco didn’t doubt that they were all going to be lovely, he couldn’t help but feel intimidated by the prospect of actually being introduced.
Those worries proved to be far too late though, as Draco found himself being introduced to a large group of people sitting at what was obviously several tables pushed together. When Harry said his name, Draco raised his hand in an awkward wave, doing his best at a polite smile, but he was definitely feeling out of sorts.

Their presence was met with several returned waves, and a mutter of hi’s and hello’s.
It still meant eight familiar faces were looking up at them, and in that moment Harry knew that no crash course would be able to summarise them all to Draco. Lovely as they all were, Harry thought they’d be well off if Draco simply managed to remember their names.
“Draco, this is everybody,” he said, eyes glancing towards Draco. “Luna, Ron and Hermione, Dean and Seamus, Ginny and Parvati, and Neville. Draco’s Sirius’ cousin -”
“Oh my god, you absolutely are,” Parvati blurted, a look of sheer amazement in her expression as she seemingly placed the resemblance. Newest to the circle, she was also the least familiar with Harry’s parents. “You’re so blond, obviously, but you’re identical.”
