Now that he was prompted, Draco found that he didn’t actually know where to start.
While he had had many very real and concrete feelings while he had been in the situation, he found that he wasn’t actually sure if any of it was going to be relatable to Harry in the least.
“I guess that it’s just a weird situation to me, you know?” He started out, finding that that really was the best way to sum up his thoughts.
“You know, when I started dating Peter, I knew that i would never be able to be with him publicly, so I never really considered anything in that regard,” he stated, looking at the road ahead rather than his companion in the car. He feared that he was going to appear incredibly shallow for what he was about to say, but he needed to get it out and he had a feeling that Harry was going to be less judgemental than Pansy.
“And it’s not like his parents were anything new to me, I have met more people like them than I care to count, but everything about it just felt wrong, does that make sense?”

Even though some of the nuance of the conversation was surely lost in his driving, Harry thought he was able to grasp the complexity of Draco’s discomfort. The almost sombre reflections Draco spoke into the darkness ebbed over with context Harry either didn’t have or couldn’t grasp while merging onto the motorway, but for all intent and purpose, Harry probably didn’t need to understand it, only to lend an ear to it.
“Yeah,” he said, more an encouragement than a true agreement. “I think so.”

While Draco wasn’t certain that Harry actually understood his plight, he found that he greatly appreciated the encouragement, needing to be able to let it out more than he needed someone to actually understand what his problem was. Hell, he barely understood what his own problem was, he just knew that he had felt wrong the entire evening and he couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe he was making a mistake in all of this.
“I know I’m rambling, I’m sorry,” he stated, running a hand through his hair before leaning back against the car seat with a defeated sigh. It was all too much and he had a hard time wrapping his head around it all, so it felt like a relief to get to say these things out loud to someone.
“I guess I just never considered whether or not I actually wanted to be proper committed to Peter, you know? It was never an option before all of this, so I didn’t have to think about whether or not I’d be able to live with being told that I’m lucky that I take after my father so much, all things considered for the rest of my life.”

Despite any efforts to keep a neutral face, Draco’s words brought a twitch to Harry’s brow, knitting together in a furrow for just a moment.
“He said that?” he asked, eyes still on the road, trying not to seem too appalled.
Harry hadn’t known much of Draco’s mother, but his father was certainly a character in the tapestry of English politics; and privately, Harry wouldn’t particularly consider it a favourable or flattering comparison.

Despite everything, the very visceral reaction from Harry brought a faint smile to Draco’s lips, relieved to finally be around someone who seemed to understand why he might not find the comparison to his father a particularly flattering kne.
“His mother did,” he corrected, finding that the statement was no less offensive coming from Peter’s mother, especially considering that Peter hadn’t seemed inclined to tell his mother why Draco likely wouldn’t appreciate a comment like that at the given time.
“Both of his parents kept going on and on about how they’d met my father a couple of times and what a lovely man he is and how he must be so proud of me for becoming a doctor and how I must be ao proud to have such a great father,” Draco rambled, feeling some comfort in the fact that Harry clearly listened and understood his frustration with the situation.
“Sickening crap like that, you know?”

At the sound of the things Draco had had to sit through during dinner, a knot formed in the pit of Harry’s stomach, uneasy discomfort surging at the mere sound of it. Rarely, if ever, had Harry been forced through a situation like that; he couldn’t blame Draco for arranging a quit exit.
“You’re father is -” he started, not even knowing how to describe him to his son, the harshness of the descriptors curdling on his tongue.
“Malfoy’s not a common name,” he tried instead, glancing over at Draco with a furrow between his brows, trying to make absolutely sure Harry wasn’t confused on who Draco’s father was.

It was only then that Draco realised that Harry had no idea who his father was.
With the closeness of the relationship Draco had seen between Harry and his fathers, Draco had just assumed that they would have shared that fact with him, and a sense of gratitude bloomed in Draco when he realised that they hadn’t.
It wasn’t that Draco didn’t want Harry to know, he had come to trust him just as much as he trusted Sirius and Remus, but it was nice that it was something that he got to disclose on his own terms.
“Yes,” he stated, realising that he had never actually had to tell anyone who his father was before and unsure exactly how to do it.
“My father is Lucius Malfoy. The politician.”

Harry made an involuntary face at that, brows furrowed for an instance, before regaining control of his expression. He had had an inkling - really, with a name like Malfoy odds were as much - but still it felt almost unlikely; both in Lucius Malfoy feeling as an abstract, awful entity rather than a true man with genuine morals and feelings, but mostly for the sheer and startling differences between father and son.
“Yeah,” Harry exhaled, unsure what else to offer but his sympathy. “No, that’s - that’s not really a compliment.”

Draco laughed at that, unable to help himself.
It was rare for Draco to meet anyone who was willing to badmouth his father in front of him, so the honest reaction from Harry was so refreshing to him. It had been thoughts that he had had himself for ages, but it felt much more cathartic to hear it from someone else.
“No,” he said, a laugh still in his voice, feeling more at ease already, surprised that he was even able to calm down again. “It really isn’t.”

Draco’s laugh was immediately gratifying, an invitation to participate in a joke Harry wasn’t sure he was supposed to be part of. The sheepish relief showed briefly in his expression, casting Draco a sideways glance and a dazed little grin.
Turning his attention forward, Harry couldn’t help but let out a delayed snort, the ridicule of those comments seeming to sink in all over again with that added piece of context.
“At least he didn’t say it,” he said after a moment, when the joke had dissipated a little, and Harry had had enough time to realise he might be unnecessarily critical of a man he hadn’t met.
“'You’re dating him, not his family', and all that.”

While Harry was absolutely right Draco found that it wasn’t much of a comfort.
It was a difficult situation, because Draco knew far too well just how much someone in their situation was their family, but he really didn’t want to get into that.
“I guess yeah,” was what he settled on, feeing tired to his core and longing for nothing more than to just go home and rest.
“Thanks for letting me ramble,” he added, knowing that he was putting a lot on Harry right now and he couldn’t help but feel a little guilty about it. “It’s been a long night.”

______

They hadn’t been talking about Peter and his family when Harry had left to make a pot of tea, but as Harry ascended the stairs back up from the kitchen, tray and china in hand, he could tell that the topic had been resumed once more. Unsurprising to Harry, Remus’ voice carried the loudest, criticising white collar society, one of his favourite topics to divulge about.
“- it’s amplified everywhere around them,” Remus was saying as Harry snuck back into the living room, edging past the couch to put the tray on the coffee table.
Without missing a beat, Remus sat up straighter, both to allow space for Harry to pass and to better engage with conversation, his eyes brightly on Draco.
“Schools, careers, their community - it seeps into every part of their life, and you cannot expect them to change or abandon those values if they’re not radically removed from it.”

There was something incredibly freeing in seeing Remus so riled up about the situation.
When Harry had dropped Draco off the night before, both Sirius and Remus had been suitably upset about the situation he had found himself in.
It had been refreshing to have someone truly in his corner like that, so while Draco was more or less willing to forget about the entire situation, he still felt a great relief in the fact that they clearly weren’t prepared to do the same.
“And it’s not exactly an easy feat to leave everything behind like that either,” Sirius stated as he reached forward to start pouring them cups of tea, clearly indicating that this was not a new topic of conversation.
“When you have known something like that your whole life, it’s not like you are going to have much of a support system outside of all that.”

“Who cares if it’s hard, you should seek actual change because it is the right thing to do,” Remus argued, though the affront was clearly not directed towards anybody in the room, towards anybody real.
Actively keeping out of the conversation, Harry simply lingered long enough for Sirius to pour two cups, finding that he had already said his piece last night on their drive back to London. Grabbing both, Harry continued to shuffle around the furniture; offering Draco one of the cups with a smile, Harry kept the other when he slumped into the armchair he had left vacant.
The snap of the chocolate bar as Remus broke off a corner further cut through the tension, bringing a bit of ease back into his voice as he leaned back into the sofa.
“Once - if - you ever become truly aware of the nature of your surroundings, it is borderline immoral to stay just for the sake of it being the easier thing to do,” he continued, eyes mindlessly finding Sirius as he said so, a ghost of admiration seeping into his voice, his love for his husband ever-present.

The offer of the cup of tea was a welcome distraction to Draco, enjoying the feeling of the hot tea between his hands as he tried to take it all in.
It all seemed so normal in a sense that Draco had never known before, and it almost seemed to him that he was intruding on something that wasn’t meant for his eyes; despite knowing just how much of this conversation was started for him.
“Thankfully, people can and do change,” Sirius added, referring not only to himself, but also nodding towards Draco, acknowledging just how much work he had already done just in the short time he had been with them.

“Yeah, and thank God they do,” Remus agreed, biting into the corner of the chocolate. It offered a moment of silent contemplation as he chewed, both his food and his words.
“Point being,” he summarised, a motion of his wrist a true sign of his teaching degree, trying to wrap up the loose ends of his own scatterbrain grievances.
“I get what you were going for, love,” Remus said, eyes suddenly on Harry.
Harry looked a little surprised to be called on, having not participated much on the topic since he arrived this afternoon, where he had given his fathers a brief summary of his experience of the night. It made Harry’s smile go a little sheepish, eyes flickering towards Draco over top of the rim of his mug, as though he had any way of helping him out of the spotlight.
Thoughtlessly gesturing towards Harry, chocolate still in hand, Remus went on. “But even if he disagrees with his family, it’s his silence that speaks volumes. You’re absolutely dating his family if they’re dictating - consciously or not - the way he is when he’s around them.”
“I’m just trying to give the bloke a chance,” Harry muttered, but his smile was easy and well meaning. “But what do I know, I like my family.”

There was so much love in the room that Draco could barely stand it.
It was so clear how much they all cared about each other and the fact that they seemed to include Draco in that care was almost too much to take in.
“I don’t know,” Draco stated with a shrug, honestly not sure what to make of the entire thing, but it was definitely nice to feel like someone was so unquestionably by his side. However, it also meant that he felt like he had to defend his boyfriend, if even just a little.
“I think they all meant well, it just rubbed me the wrong way,” he ended on, not wanting to make it seem like he was just helpless and tragic.
“Of course they did, darling,” Sirius interjected, knowing better than anyone the kind of situation both Draco and Peter were finding themselves in, so he didn’t want to scare him off just yet.
“But hopefully you also know that it’s okay to be bothered, even if someone means well.”

“Christ almighty,” Harry muttered under his breath, his voice a scoffed chuckle as he pulled himself up from the plush embrace of the armchair.
For all the love and respect he had for the two men that raised him, both Remus and Sirius had spent years fostering kids a decade younger than either Harry and Draco, and in moments like this it showed.
“I’m gonna have a smoke,” he declared, forfeiting the conversation with an exasperated smile in the direction of his parents as he shifted around the furniture.
“Draco, do you-?” he said as he glanced towards Draco, the question completed with a little gesture of his hand more than with words.

The offer to go join Harry for a smoke was a welcome relief to Draco.
He was deeply grateful for Sirius and Remus, both for opening their home to him but also for all of the care they showed to him, however it was almost too much for him to take at times, and a smoke break would probably help him to find his center again.
“Yeah, sure,” he stated in a voice much more casual than his need for the cool evening air and the nicotine.
He got up from his chair as well, feeling a little bad for just leaving Sirius and Remus in there, but he figured that they would understand.

Leaving the living room through the entryway, Harry palmed at the pockets of his jacket to confirm the presence of both the lighter and pack of smokes, before putting them on.
“You’ve been out back yet?” he asked a little absentminded, looking up at Draco with a grin as he bent down to pick up his shoes.
The weather had been poor and autumnal the entire time they’d known Draco, and for how lovely the garden was in the summer, they all tended to creep back inside when the wind became too chilly.
Regardless of the answer, Harry nodded down the corridor for Draco to follow him, shoes in hand.
