Draco nodded softly at the question, even if t wasn’t entirely the truth. It wasn’t that Draco had ever explicitly told his mum that he was homosexual, nor anything else to that extent, but he he was still certain that his mum knew exactly what was up with him.
“I think she does at least,” Draco stated, watching as his tea steeped, finally taking a glance up at Sirius again, finding nothing but compassion in his eyes. It was so clear to Draco that Sirius knew what he was talking about, and he felt less embarrassed about divulging.
“That won’t change the fact that I won’t be welcome at the manor anymore,” he added, not sure just how well Sirius even knew his mum, but he had to be familiar.

Sirius had to make a conscious decision not to let his disappointment with Narcissa Black show on his features, knowing that would be unkind to Draco. The ease with which that woman cut close family out of her life was shocking to Sirius, having seen Andromeda having to mourn the loss of her sister many years ago. There was no doubt in his mind that Draco was telling the truth in saying he wouldn’t be allowed home anymore.
Instead, he simply nodded again.
“And do you live with them?” he asked, fishing out the teabag out of his mug and onto a porcelain dish reserved for just that.
Draco must have been in his twenties, but from that layer of high society, Sirius knew it wasn’t uncommon to stay at home until marriage. He wanted to judge how critical Draco’s situation was.

Only now was Draco catching up to what Sirius was doing.
It made his heart warm to realise that Sirius was trying to gauge whether or not he was going to be safe, something that he had greatly considered himself. It made him feel cared for and confirmed him in the decision to go to him for help.
“No, but my father owns the flat I live in,” Draco stated, fishing his own teabag out of his mug and running a hand through his hair. He knew that the rent had been paid for the rest of the month, but felt uncertain if his father would want to evict him without notice.
“I might just find a hotel for the night,” Draco mused, taking a sip from his tea and looking up at Sirius.

At that, Sirius hummed, privately sure that he would offer Draco to stay the night there before he got a chance to look into alternative arrangements. He didn’t want to overreach too quickly, still a stranger to the young man.
“That’s good, at least,” Sirius reflected with a slow inhale. He was tentative to use the word good in any way related to Draco’s situation, but facts were that Draco was still better off than other kids who had passed through the house.
“We should probably be able to get you your stuff,” he went on, leaning back in his chair and bringing his cup with him. His rings clicked against the porcelain as he adjusted his grip. “You live close by?”

The use of the word we took Draco completely aback, having not expected a lot of practical help from Sirius, having mostly just wanted to be able to talk to someone about what was going on. It also made him feel like he made the right decision though, blown away by how easily Sirius bestowed kindness upon, as if it was nothing to him.
“I live close to Oxford,” Draco stated, knowing that it wasn’t exactly close by, but his father had insisted on getting him a flat close to uni, such that he wouldn’t get distracted from his studies.
“I study out there,” he elaborated, not wanting for Sirius to see him as a brag, but also knowing that Sirius, if any, would have to understand the pressure to get into a good university.

The fact that Draco lived in Oxford had Sirius’ brows pulled together in a brief consideration, knowing it complicated things that Draco didn’t live in London. It wasn’t by any means impossible to help Draco rearrange his life in Oxford, but the distance was significant when time was of an issue.
His expression softened when Draco clarified that he was attending university there, something Sirius had probably already understood. Sirius had attended Oxford University, too, though he didn’t consider it worth mentioning, not one to give his degree much thought or consideration.
“Yeah?” he prompted regardless, wanting Draco to share anything that was on his mind.
“What’re you studying?” he said with a smile more freely now that it had at the very least become clear that Draco wasn’t under any immediate risk.
Sirius took a drink of his tea, watching his cousin over the rim of the mug, an eerie feeling of seeing his own past self, had he not left his home at fifteen.

It was with a deep relief that Draco indulged in the changing of the subject and the shift that their conversation was taking. It was so much easier to just catch up, getting to know each other after not having known each other for so long.
It also meant that Draco could pretend that they were just getting to know each other, and that Draco hadn’t fallen crying around Sirius’ neck within the first five minutes of knowing him.
“Medicine,” he answered, a tentative smile playing at the corner of his mouth.
Despite the fact that his area of study had mostly been picked by his parents, Draco had still found that he absolutely loved it. He wanted to be able to help people and he liked the challenge that the study prover to be, giving it his all.
“I love it,” he added, unsure exactly how to get into this conversation, but figuring that he should just try to relax and see where it was going.

Sirius couldn’t help but grin, finding that he should have guessed it with the background Draco, too, had. It seemed like, between Draco, Regulus and Sirius himself they had covered the trinity of upper class conservative degrees, becoming a doctor, a lawyer and an engineer respectively.
“How far along are you?” Sirius encouraged with a smile, stretching to place the mug back onto the tabletop. Instead he folded his arms across his chest, easing back into the chair. “Do you know what you’re specialising in?”

And just like that, it seemed like most of the weight had been lifted from Draco’s shoulders.
He was still left horribly aware of the situation he was in and just what level of consequences it was going to have for him, but for now he could just concentrate on drinking tea and talking with Sirius. It felt so much easier and gave Draco a much needed break from the chaos that was currently reigning in his life.
“I’m gonna be a resident next year,” Draco told, feeling that Sirius was genuinely interested in hearing about him and his life and thus he genuinely wanted to tell him about it all.
“I think I want to be an oncologist,” he explained, having given it a lot of thought and having come to the conclusion that that was just what he felt the most passionate about.
“That’s cancer,” Draco added with a tentative smile.

Sirius smiled at the clarification, not finding it to be an unkind gesture, though it was one that assumed Sirius hadn’t had an occasion to meet an oncologist. Regulus had passed of pancreatic cancer in his late twenties, and Sirius had only gotten word of it at the very last stages of his illness, having only gotten the chance to visit him once.
Sirius didn’t comment on it, though, not wanting Draco to think he had said anything hurtful.
“How old are you?” he instead strung up, finding that Draco must be either older than Sirius had expected, or ahead of his age by a few years.

It wasn’t unusual for Draco that people had to ask for his age, knowing that he had an ageless look and Sirius really had no chance of knowing when he was born. Draco didn’t know exactly when Sirius was disowned from the family, but he knew that he had been young, so it was probably way before Draco had been born.
“I am 25,” he answered, realising that it might just be something that went with the Black family, as he had no clue how old Sirius was either.

It hadn’t been his intention to cut Draco off, but finding his age interesting and relevant nonetheless. He was surprised to find that Draco was Harry’s age, having not expected him to be much older than in his early twenties; 25 felt like a reasonable age to start his residency, so he didn’t comment further on it.
“We lived in Oxford before moving here,” he instead offered, as willing to share as he was to listen. Sirius had inherited the house precisely because of Regulus’ passing, allowing them to live beyond the means of their shared income. “It’s nice there.”

Draco nodded at that, really enjoying his time at Oxford, while also being excited to be done and getting to actually work as a doctor soon.
“This place is nice too,” Draco stated, having noticed just how warm and homey the house seemed to be. It was clear that it was a home that was lived in and Draco could only dream to get to make a home like this of his own one day.
“Must have cost you and arm and a leg in this are,” Draco stated, knowing that London was incredibly expensive.

Sirius had to stop himself from laughing at a joke Draco hadn’t been included in - and one he might never learn to laugh at. The fact of the matter was that it hadn’t cost him an arm and a leg, only three successive deaths in the family.
It made him glance around the room, trying to see it through Draco’s eyes. Sirius believed they had finally dispelled the last, lingering haunts of his childhood lurking in the corners.
“It’s my parents’ house,” he admitted, the grin wide on his lips as his attention returned onto Draco. Though Draco lacked insights to the particular situation, Sirius trusted he understood the particularly satisfying irony of the statement.
He shifted, uncrossing his arms only to recross them again the opposite way. “Funny how things have a way of unfolding themselves, isn’t it?”

Draco arched an eyebrow at that, though a smile was one his lips, surprised that Sirius had ended up inheriting the house. He doubted that that had suited anyone in the family, the lost older son getting his proper inheritance anyway, but he honestly couldn’t remember if there had been any level of drama about it and he also didn’t know when it was supposed to have happened.
“How’d that happen?” Draco asked, hoping that he wasn’t being rude, but seeing as they shared family, Draco was interested in knowing how exactly it worked out.
“I can’t imagine anyone suddenly changed their mind.”

“No,” Sirius almost laughed. He hadn’t once talked with his parents after leaving home, and hadn’t attended their funerals, either.
Uncrossing his hands, Sirius instead ran them through his hair, twisting it around his wrist at the nape of his neck, holding it to a loose bun. “No, we didn’t ever - uh - resolve anything.”
Sirius hadn’t said it as a way to offer Draco hope that his parents would change their mind, finding that incredibly unlikely. Sirius simply cherished the fact that, despite all their parents’ efforts, he had gotten everything they hadn’t wanted him to have, and more.
He relaxed his posture, letting his hair fall back between his fingers.
“My parents wrote me out of their will, but my brother wrote me into his.”
Sirius wondered if Draco had known Regulus, trying to find any sign of recognition in Draco’s expression. “I inherited it from him.”

While Draco knew that there was no way that he would ever be able to reconcile with his parents, but the fact that Sirius hadn’t either put the final nail in the coffin for him. He would be lying if he said that it didn’t hurt, but he also knew that it didn’t make sense to keep stressing out about it.
Instead, when Sirius mentioned his brother something finally clicked for Draco.
He hadn’t been very old the last time he had met him, but he did remember his mum’s other cousin, Regulus Black. He didn’t know how he hadn’t made the connection before, but of course that would make Sirius Regulus’ brother.
“Oh yeah,” he said, looking properly at Sirius, almost as if to see similarities between the two brothers, but his memory of Regulus was too weak for it to do anything for him.
“Right, Regulus is your brother.”

It didn’t surprise Sirius that Narcissa and Regulus had stayed in touch over the years, finding that they probably grew to have very similar, complacent personalities. On his deathbed, Regulus hadn’t seemed to agree with their parents’ decision to break contact with Sirius, but Regulus had never challenged them on it.
“Yeah,” Sirius agreed, almost pensively. “He’s the only one I’ve even spoken to again after leaving home.”
Even then, Sirius had barely spoken to him. Regulus had been deadly ill by the time he finally and reluctantly reached out to Sirius, and Sirius hadn’t gotten the chance to visit him a second time.

Draco nodded softly at that, glad that Sirius at least had gotten to speak to his brother before he passed away, even if they had had a strained relationship while he lived. Draco had no siblings of his own, so he really had no real frame of reference, but he just thought that it made sense.
“Were you close? Like, when you were younger?” Draco asked, knowing that Regulus had sided with his parents in disowning Sirius, but that didn’t mean that the two of them couldn’t have been close as kids, or maybe even teenagers.
In fact, Draco had no idea how old Sirius was when he got thrown out, only knowing that it was before he was born and thus he had never met him before.

The question made Sirius exhale, hesitant. He had asked himself the same thing often, especially the years following Regulus’ death, and hadn’t come to a conclusive answer.
“I don’t know. Not particularly, I don’t think,” he eventually said. It had been hard to come to terms with reality, so wanting to glamourize the relationship he had had with his brother after the kindness he had shown him those last weeks of his life.
He looked at Draco, finding that it wasn’t a very encouraging story to tell a young man in a similar situation. The simple truth was that Sirius couldn’t within reason tell Draco that his relationship with his family was likely to improve with time.
He searched for discomfort in Draco’s features, but found only interest. It made Sirius shift in his seat, turning slightly so that he could rest his legs on the adjacent chair, crossing his ankles as he settled in the fact that he could be the one to fill the silence for a bit.
“Our parents always liked him better, which I think really soured our relationship.”
Sirius had reached for the still-full mug of tea, turning it thoughtlessly as he spoke. He didn’t seem ill at ease talking about it.
