This body is a vessel for my mayhem and as long as I can perform bafoonery it doesn’t matter if this stomach is flat or not

Once Peter stormed off, Draco was left with a feeling of the ground having disappeared from underneath him.
Surprisingly, maybe mostly to himself, Draco wasn’t all that phased by Peter’s yelled incriminations, knowing that he wasn’t going to take a defeat like that easily. However, what really struck him was the way that Harry had stood up for him, apparently without much thought about it.
“Are you alright?” Draco found himself asking, trying to get back into his own body and it seemed easier to focus on Harry for that; finding the entire situation so bizarre and new that it barely felt real.

Harry's hand had begun to throb, anger and adrenaline deflating and giving way to the more tangible consequences of that entire interaction. It all was terribly sobering.
"Yeah," Harry reassured. Raising his hand a bit, he looked over the cut, trying to gague the severity of it all through the beads of blood. "Assuming your moron of an ex doesn't have rabies, then yeah, I'm okay."
With a delay, Harry glanced up at Draco, a little smile on his lips to accompany the comment. It almost immediately shifted into a frown. "Are you?"

There was something so utterly disarming about how Harry found it in himself to flash Draco a quick smile, even if his hand had to be throbbing and he really didn’t strike Draco like the type to usually resort to violence. It made something bloom in Draco’s chest, feeling so wholly cared for by someone who barely even knew him.
“I don’t know,” he answered honestly, feeling like his entire world had been turned upside down once more, and he honestly wasn’t sure what to think of any of it.
“Thank you, you didn’t have to do all that,” he added, finding that his gratitude to Harry was the only thing he was entirely certain of.

Harry kept a weary eye on Draco, not finding his reply nor deflection very reassuring. It was, however, hard to keep his eyes on Draco, Harry's gaze flickering to the blood beading up on this knuckles.
"Yeah, well, he was saying some pretty shitty things," Harry said, dismissing the notion that he didn't have to intervene. That wasn't how he was raised to act, anyway. "And Sirius wouldn't forgive me if I didn't."
He raised his hand slightly, trying to keep it elevated, before he once again had a chance to look over at Draco.
"Has he said stuff like that before?" he pressed, going to casual but shooting far off. Harry had already heard about the parents saying harmfull things, and Harry didn't trust their son to be any different.

The care Harry was showing was so foreign to Draco that he really didn’t know what to do about it.
While he was aware that his relationship with Peter wasn’t exactly ideal and also that Peter wasn’t exactly a great guy, he had genuinely thought that that was the best that he was going to get, so it had seemed silly to dream bigger. The implication that not only he could do better, but also that maybe he shouldn’t have to put up with that kind of behaviour was eyeopening to say the least.
“Never quite that explicit,” he settled on, finding that the outright insults were new, though the sentiments had been laced through all of their interactions since day one.
“Let me take a look at that hand for you,” he tried to deflect, reaching out for Harry’s injured hand in the hopes of this line of questioning to stop.

Though there was much left to be said, the sudden acknowledgement of his hand managed to deflate the last bit of adrenaline coursing through Harry, allowing for the ache to set it.
Willingly offering it up for Draco to look at, Harry’s eyes dropped to it, too.
“I think it looks worse than it is,” he felt compelled to say, having an urge to downplay the fact that he had actually punched someone.
After another beat, Harry continued, his voice a nervous little chuckle, a growing self-consciousness. “I can’t believe I did that. I’m sorry, maybe I shouldn’t have done that-”

“I’m glad you did it,” Draco cut Harry off, maybe not exactly thrilled that Harry had decided to punched Peter in the face, but he couldn’t deny the warmth that was blooming in his chest from the fact that someone cared about him like that.
Draco had, unthinkingly, taken Harry’s hand in his, using his sleeve to gingerly wipe the blood away from Harry’s knuckles, trying to rid himself of some of the restless energy that was lingering in his system.
“It doesn’t look too bad, hands tend to bleed a lot,” Draco explained, whether from wanting to change the subject or just wanting to comfort Harry even he didn’t really know, but he didn’t let go of Harry’s hand.

The brush of Draco’s sleeve against his knuckles, and the subsequent sight of the blood-stained fabric made Harry’s heart stutter and catch, inexplicably. They all suddenly felt so close; Peter’s blood on Harry, Harry’s blood on Draco, Draco’s hand on his.
“Good,” he replied, a mindless response to both things Draco had said.
His skin felt tender, and though Draco’s touch wasn’t uncomfortable, Harry was decidedly aware of it, feeling the thud of his own pulse more clearly where it hammered against Draco’s skin than anywhere else.
“I should go wash up, no?”

Draco nodded softly at that, not really wanting to let go of Harry just yet, but also knowing that it would be better if he went in to get it washed.
“Yeah, we don’t want to rush an infection,” he stated and gingerly let go of him.
A million different thoughts and emotions were all fluttering through Draco at such a rapid pace that it was making him dizzy and short of breath.
“Let’s go back inside.”

The moment Draco's hand left his, Harry expolatory flexed his hand only to immediatelt feel the sting of the cuts pulling across his knuckles.
He made a face at that, eyes downturned to his hand as he blindly took a few steps back towards the front door of the bar.
"Fat chance," the doorman interjected from somewhere to their left, enough authority in his voice to make Harry stutter and stall. Looking up, Harry found him a few yards away sharing a smoke with someone, accusatorily pointing at them. "You two are done for for tonight; you're lucky I didn't call the cops on you."
Having parted his lips to argue that their things and friends were still inside, Harry glanced back towards the open door ahead of him. There, through the crowd, Harry momentarily had a clear line of sight to a familiar bartender, who broadly signalled them to go around the corner with a wave and a nod.
"Sorry," Harry muttered towards the doorman, stepping of the stoop.
In an aimless effort to keep any more blood off of Draco's clothes, Harry nudged him to go the way the bartender had urged them, with a shove of his elbow. "Come on."

While it probably shouldn’t be a huge surprise that they weren’t allowed back in after all that, Draco still couldn’t help but feel that it was entirely unfair. After all, Draco really didn’t think that Harry had done anything wrong, feeling that Peter simply got what was coming for him.
He was about to argue when Harry started nudging him around the bar instead, only catching a brief glimpse of a bartender waving at them, and decided to let it go.
“Alright,” he said, feeling more than a little deflated about the entire thing.
He felt incredibly guilty about getting Harry thrown out of the bar he was hanging out at with his friends, but if they at least could get their coats and get Harry’s hand cleaned, then he would have to make it up to him some other time.

“****ing hell, eh,” Harry grinned, seeing Draco’s mood falter; Harry himself was oddly humoured by the turn their night had taken, still caught up in the ridicule of it all.
Turning the corner around the block of houses, Harry ducked into the delivery alley behind the row of pubs and shops. He had exited through there before, having previously taken a habit to share a cigarette with one of the bartenders.
Simon was waiting for them on the stoop of the back door of the pub, a clean dishcloth and a bag of ice in hand.
“Figured you could use this,” he offered with a smile, lifting it a little. “Are you two okay? I saw you through the window.”
Gratefully accepting the towel, Harry glanced over at Draco, looking at him for an answer, feeling like his own wellbeing was merely a byline of the actual conflict.

Now that most of the dust had properly settled, Draco couldn’t help but feel embarrassed about what a huge fuss had been made on his account. While he greatly appreciated that Harry had stood up for him when Peter started throwing slurs at him, he really didn’t feel like he was worth all of this trouble and felt guilty about ruining Harry’s evening like this.
“Harry’s got the worst of it,” Draco stated when he realised that both Harry and the bartender were waiting for him to speak. All in all, he hadn’t really suffered too much in the interaction, it wasn’t really anything he hadn’t seen before after all.
“It’s just my ex, he isn’t too keen on being ex, you know?”

Harry, who’d been there to witness the entire interaction, snorted a surprised little laugh, Draco’s phrasing striking something within him. Ducking his grin, he moved to brush the dish towel over his split knuckles.
“****, that’s pretty funny,” Simon admitted, his voice a startled little chuckle, seeming equally humoured and mortifying. “I probably can’t let you back in, but you can stay out here for as long as you want. Let me know if you need anything.”
“Thanks, mate,” Harry said, before watching Simon disappear into the bar, the door shutting behind him.
Without paying it much mind, Harry moved to sit on the now empty stoop, eyes still on his hand, trying to distinguish between caked up blood and early scabbing.
“Should I ice it or just clean it, d’you recon?” he asked, eyes darting up to Draco.

Feeling suddenly zapped from all of his energy, Draco sat down next to Harry on the stoop, still trying to wrap his head around how their evening had ended like this. He was beyond grateful for the fact that Harry and the bartender seemed to be able to see the humour in the situation though, and that helped to make him feel less on edge.
“I think you should keep the ice on it,” he said, reaching into his pocket for his pack of cigarettes, dismayed to note that he only had one left. Still, he pulled it out and placed it between his lips before lighting it; finding it much needed.
“I am really sorry, you know,” he said, glancing at Harry’s battered hand, feeling tendrils of guilt wrapping around his stomach.

Upon hearing Draco’s confirmation, Harry’s attention returned to his hand. Gingerly placing the icy bag onto his tender hand he winces a little at the contact.
“What for?” he asked, before his mind properly caught up; it happened only after he had glanced up at Draco, the realisation making him feel a little silly.
“Oh,” he said, the confusion bleeding into a grin, eyes once again drifting to his hands. “Don’t be.”
Shifting his seat, Harry tucked his feet further beneath him, raising his knees enough for him to rest his forearms on them, allowing him to relax his posture.
“Be sorry you dated him, sure, but not for this; this was nothing.”

Despite himself, Draco actually chuckled at that, finding Harry’s words a little harsh, but definitely fair. After all, Harry had only really seen the end of the relationship, and the red flags were probably stark at this point. Still, Draco couldn’t really blame him for being that level of honest with him and in a way, he greatly appreciated it.
“Already on it,” he said with a soft smile and a shake of his head.
Everything just seemed absurd and in a way, Draco was convinced that he would wake up the next day; not outed and never having met the men he was fast starting to consider to be his new family.

Somewhat aware of his own gall, Harry looked over at Draco with a boyish grin, an attempt to reaffirm the tease of his words. Draco of all people knew just exactly which glimpses Harry had gotten to see of his relationship, and Harry felt quietly justified.
Harry’s smile softened over the course of the next few seconds he spent looking at Draco.
“Can I have one of those?” he asked, nodding towards the cigarette in Draco’s hand.

Draco had found Harry handsome ever since he first saw him, but he was somehow even more handsome than he ever had been before right in that moment. It made his heart stutter in his chest, feeling so overwhelmed with emotions he couldn’t quite name.
“It’s my last one,” he said as he readjusted his grip on the cigarette to offer it toward Harry. After everything that Harry had done for him, he felt that he could at least share his last cigarette with him.
“But I’m willing to share with my knight in shining armour.”

Taken aback by Draco’s phrasing, Harry let out a surprised laugh, loud and genuine. It felt like Draco only kept apologising, an endless loop of new phrasings and interpretations, but this was the dumbest yet, and the hardest to one to give a coherent dismissal of.
Ducking his head with a grin, Harry removed the ice pack from his hand, allowing him to reach out to pluck the cigarette out of Draco’s grip.
His smile had softened, meeting Draco’s eyes overtop of the cigarette, lifting it to be level with his mouth.
“Yeah, well, I won't let people speak to you like that,” he said, aiming for easy going, but it was undermined by how earnestly he believed Draco deserved someone to stand up for him, and the fondness of his smile.
