The feeling of Harry’s hand running along his ribs sent shivers down Draco’s spine, having a hard time feeling sorry about the entire ordeal with Benjamin when Harry was touching him like that.
Sure, he had been devastated when he had made the decision to never see Benjamin again, but he knew that it was for the better. It wasn’t like he had much of a future with a muggle anyway, unsure how he would go about explaining his life in a meaningful way to anyone.
“It’s fine, it’s been so long now,” Draco stated, and he was being genuine about it. He was alright about the entire ordeal by now, because he had had a lot of time to think it all through.

Harry hadn’t paid much attention when the strike had been added to Draco’s record, so he had no choice but to believe him. Not that he had any intention of questioning it, finding that only Draco could really make that judgement.
Humming an acknowledgement, Harry’s hand against Draco’s skin became purposeful, a point of stability at Harry inched closer, resting his weight against Draco.
“That’s good,” he muttered, voice muffled from placing a kiss to Draco’s covered shoulder.

Time had seemed to slip between his fingers ever since his birthday and Draco had thrown himself directly back into work.
He had had some scared with Harry’s situation, having seen the situation worsen and get better over time and had been driving himself crazy with trying to figure it what the cause was. It seemed that dark objects made Harry’s condition worse, which was why he had decided to move Harry’s work out of the study most days, allowing Harry to work in the sunroom.
They had such a day together, where both of them had moved their work into the sunroom, fresh tea having been just placed on the table with their work.
Draco felt calm and collected, still mostly wanting to pull his own hair out in frustration, but finding that they were slowly starting to make headway.

Over the course of the last several months, Harry had made an effort to follow the instructions Draco had given him, most importantly that of staying in confinement at the Manor. A firm believer that Draco was an expert in this field, Harry had willingly accommodated that. The first several weeks of his stay Harry had rescheduled obligations only to then cancel them indefinitely, maintaining that he was out of commission until further notice. As July crept to an end, Harry found that reality had finally caught up to him, finding that their results made it increasingly difficult to justify his stay.
Eyes thoughtlessly turned to the side, Harry had been watching a bird trying to pick out a critter from between flaked tree barch. He had been picking at his spoon since Coote had served them their tea, flipping it irregularly between his fingers.
“I have to go home soon,” he said. After a long deliberation, Harry believed honesty to be the best course of action.
He finally dragged his eyes over at Draco. Uncertain if Draco had noticed now that they had separated their work spaces, but Harry had over the course of the past week been receiving increasingly desperate letters regarding his upcoming birthday, including from Hermione. “I have something I can’t postpone.”

When Harry suddenly spoke Draco was taken aback, having been completely absorbed in his work and in his tea. Now though, Draco had to look up at Harry, surprised to see just how determined he was looking.
Things hadn’t really changed that much in the time since his birthday, the two of them being around each other in the same way that they used to. That was also why Draco was surprised to hear Harry speak in such a determined manner, clearly absolutely set on going home.
“Yeah?” Draco found himself asking, unsure how else to properly react to the statement, because that was so clearly what it was. Harry wasn’t asking to get to go home, he was telling Draco that that was what he was going to do.
“When?” Draco asked before taking a sip of his tea, trying to ignore the wave of nausea that washed over him at the question.

The surprise Harry saw in Draco’s expression felt like a punch in the gut, feeling terrible for not allowing Draco to have a say. Harry had allowed Draco to dictate the conditions of his life for the past four months, and as time went on, Harry found it more and more difficult to see sense in his isolation, considering how little progress they had made between them.
He didn’t feel like he could have that conversation with Draco.
“Next Friday,” Harry eventually admitted. The decisiveness of his intention deflated at each question Draco asked, struck with a sense of having disappointed Draco.
Harry parted his lips, halfway an intention of retracting his statement. He didn’t, though, only glancing down at the spoon pinched between his fingers, Hermione’s insistence for him to return to his life present in the back of his mind. “Ideally before that, though.”

Draco felt confident that he kept most of his composure even if the nausea didn’t cease, making Draco feel like the floor had disappeared from underneath him. He knew that Harry had to leave sooner or later and he had known that for quite a while by now, but that didn’t meant that he felt ready to actually face the fact.
“Alright,” Draco stated, not keen on letting Harry out of the manor, but he really had a hard time deciding whether it was because he was worried about his state, or if he had just become unaccustomed to share. Neither scenario sat well with Draco and he did what he could to try and remain calm.
“I can’t very well force you to stay,” Draco stated, hands wrapped tightly, perhaps a bit too tightly, around the cup of tea in front of him.
“I will encourage you to take care out there, but I don’t get to decide what you do.”

Draco’s words surprised Harry; regardless of whether or not it had taken any force, Draco had decided it was best for him to stay, and Harry had listened.
“I just can’t stay any longer,” he repeated without any added infliction. Nothing else felt appropriate to say, though the words he swallowed left his throat in knots. The warning in Draco’s voice felt harsh, blind to the fact that Harry had put his life on pause for four month out of blind trust to Draco’s capabilities and process. It had gotten to a point where they simply didn’t make progress quickly enough.
And still, all Harry said was a simple, monotone, “Sorry.”
Just as Harry understood his own sacrifice, he understood the tremendous effort Draco had put into helping him. Draco had been working close to around the clock for the entirety of Harry’s stay, and it filled Harry with a strange sense of regret, having so hoped that Draco had been able to figure it out by now.
He placed the spoon back onto the table in an attempt to qualm his fidgeting, forcing a change in their tone. “I hope that leaves you enough time to rework your wards.”

Rationally, Draco knew that Harry had put his entire life on hold to stay at the manor on nothing but an inkling from Draco, something that had started to mean more and more. However, he also knew that no matter who you were, you could only be away from your own life for so long, so while it made Draco feel sick, deep into his stomach, Draco also knew that he was just going to have to let him go. He has absolutely no right to try and keep Harry around.
“Don’t worry about it,” Draco stated, feeling an odd sense of finality about the conversation. He knew that he was going to keep working on this case, desperate to figure out what it was that was lodged in Harry’s chest, but he also understood that he might no longer bu officially attached to the case.
That somehow hurt less than the idea of Harry leaving.
His gaze had been lingering on the table in front of him, only now stealing a glance up at Harry. It was just as painful as he had thought it would be, with Harry looking exactly like himself and Dracos chest tightening at the sight. They had allowed themselves to indulge far too much while Harry had been staying here and now Draco was going to have to pay the price.

______

Just as any other night, Harry stirred awake during the early hours of the morning. His brain still muddled with sleep, he had turned, expecting to find Draco perched at the side of the bed.
He didn’t.
The room remained quiet and empty, and Harry couldn’t for the life of him place what had woken him. Feeling strangely unresolved, he buried his face into the cold, unused pillow.

When Harry for a second night in a row woke seemingly without a cause, he turned on his back, forearm heavy against his brow. He spared the feel of his body a moment of attention, struck with a nagging doubt that what might have disturbed his sleep could have been an unnoticed ache that suddenly and immediately nullified his announced departure from the Manor.
After several long minutes, Harry had to accept that he felt no pain.
They hadn’t talked much about it, neither the day off or the passing day. There really wasn’t much to say, having left little margin for them to have an open conversation about it; Harry had brought it up too late, his birthday an unmoving date looming in the near future.
It wasn’t that he had gotten the impression that Draco was avoiding him, either. They had worked in separate spaces for a while now, significantly diminishing the hours they spent together throughout the way. His absence at night, however, felt more significant.
“Coote,” Harry called into the void of his room. He moved his hand aside, rubbing at his eyes. “Has Draco gone to bed?”
The answer that came warranted Harry dragging himself out of bed, too.

Harry showed up at the door to Draco’s office in his pajamas and work boots, groggily dressed only to fetch Draco to bed - whosever that might be.
While he didn’t bother knocking, Harry, even half asleep, didn’t cross the threshold, having received stern directions to keep at a distance from the dark objects in Draco’s possession.
Blinking into the brightness of the room, Harry didn’t feel particularly eloquent. “You have to come to bed.”

Despite having been looking mostly at his notes and the books spread out on the table in front of him, Draco could still see the shape appearing in the doorway and it didn’t take a lot of thinking to figure that it was Harry standing there.
It probably shouldn’t surprise him that Harry was encouraging him to come to bed, but Draco wasn’t too keen on sleep, back to feeling like a realisation that would break the case open was right around the corner but it remained just out of reach for him.
He looked up and was struck by just how sleep muddled Harry looked, making him realise that Harry had likely rolled right out of bed and then come to get him. It made his heart do somersaults in his chest, even if Draco also knew that it was absolutely pointless to even allow himself to hope. They had become a kind of friends over the months they had shared, so it was just that and Draco knew that.
“I’ll go to bed in a moment,” Draco lied unsure how convincing he was being, but he also didn’t really care too much. He wasn’t even sure if Harry actually cared too much, it was possible that he was just showing face because he was used to them sleeping together. However, Draco knew that it was likely better if he got used to sleeping on his own again.
“I have a lot of reading to do.”

Draco’s dismissal sounded almost comically disjointed to Harry’s tired ears, making him stall for a moment as he tried to process the fact that Draco, at four in the morning, thought any reading took precedence over his sleep.
“We both know you won’t,” Harry eventually stated, unfiltered by the hour. He felt like he had just recently spoken in definitives that had been damaging to their relationship, but the promise that Draco was capable of managing his own sleeping schedule was utter nonsensical, and Harry didn’t want to pretend that it wasn’t only to spare Draco’s feelings.
Standing at opposite ends of the room, Harry felt the words travel through the space between them, certain the statement had lost any real sense of conviction by the time it reached Draco, simply words spoken with exhaustion.
Disinterested in carrying out a conversation like this, Harry stepped into the room, crossing the distance between them before.
“Coote told me you didn’t go to bed last night, at all.”

Part of Draco wanted to argue when Harry entered his study, them having already discussed that Harry should stay as far away from dark objects as possible while in the manor. However, he also knew that he wasn’t really in a position to argue, having very much not intended to go to bed nay time soon, other than maybe catching a nap at some point.
“I had a lot of work that I wanted to look at,” Draco explained, knowing that they were both aware of the fact that that wasn’t the whole truth. While Harry hadn’t done anything wrong Draco still felt very weird about the entire ordeal. He had definitely gotten too used to having Harry around and the fact that that was going to have to end hurt him deeply.

Up close, Draco looked a mess, bearing clear signs of not having slept in two days. It made Harry’s stomach flip with unease, uncertain what role he had played in pushing Draco this far, but he certainly felt to blame.
“Look, you don’t have to come to bed with me,” he said gently, trying a different approach. Standing in front of Draco now, it did seem to catch up to Harry just how much Draco had actually withdrawn into himself. That in and of itself wasn’t an issue. Harry could understand that whatever they were could have changed as a result of their context changing; it was, however, an eerie look into what Draco considered to be normal when none there to stop him from destroying himself chasing a white rabbit.
“If you don’t want to, that’s alright. As long as you sleep, I don’t care where,” Harry dragged, not wanting to overcommit. He felt like he was stating the obvious, and yet, he went on into something that would only leave his lips this early in the morning. “I wouldn’t mind, though.”

While Draco wasn’t big on admitting it to himself, he knew that part of the reason why he was staying awake was the fact that he couldn’t bear going to bed alone. He had been convinced that Harry wouldn’t even have him around anymore, keen on getting back to living his own life and getting to forget everything about Draco again.
Harry hadn’t said anything that disproved that scenario, not exactly, but he had shown just enough interest in Draco to let him know that it might not be entirely over yet.
Draco ran his hands over his face, only now feeling the exhaustion settling into his bones and making the world slightly blurry.
“Yeah?” Draco asked, looking at Harry with a tired smile, more of a twitch of the corner of his mouth than an actual smile, somehow needing to actually be told that Harry wanted him around.

Getting an answer out of Draco that wasn’t a resounding no brought a crooked smile to Harry’s lips, overwhelmed. Draco had barely said anything, but the almost immediate change of heart he offered at the notion that Harry hadn’t outgrown his company made Harry’s tired head spin, unable to fully process the weight that carried.
“It gets terribly cold without you,” he returned with a tease, though the sentiment was too genuine not to carry any truth. Harry had slept poorly the past two nights, even worse than the constant interruptions of Draco getting in and out of the bed at odd hours of the night. That was harder to admit to, though.
Finally acting to dispel the distance that was forming between them, Harry shifted, moving around Draco’s desk.
Wrapping both arms around Draco’s shoulders, Harry leaned heavily against him overtop of the chairback, hiding his face into the crook of Draco’s neck with great familiarity.
“Come, you need to sleep,” he muttered into Draco’s skin, exhaustion already muddling his voice.

Feeling Harry’s arms wrapped around him and feeling more than hearing the words that Harry spoke into his skin melted the last of Draco’s resort. Harry’s warm breath on the skin of his neck sent shivers down Draco’s spine, making him realise just how much he had missed Harry’s touch in just the day that he had gone without it.
Suddenly, the idea of getting into bed seemed more and more tempting, making him realise just how much of his aversion to sleep really was an aversion to sleeping alone.
Before Harry, it had been ages since he had shared a bed with anyone, but now that he had gotten back into the habit, Draco had a hard time seeing his way our of it again.
“Well, if you’re cold,” Draco justified, even if he knew that he really didn’t have to justify going to bed, even if that bed would be one he happened to share with Harry. It still felt easier to allow himself to give in if there was even the most minuscule level of an excuse. “I guess I better.”

Harry hummed a chuckle as he straightened his posture slightly; no matter how lovely it was to be able to wrap himself around Draco, Harry knew it would be a far more comfortable embrace once they got to bed.
Marking his departure, he pressed a kiss onto Draco’s neck.
“Come on,” he encouraged, arms slipping off of Draco’s shoulders, patting a touch to Draco’s right upper arm. “Home stretch.”

The bright morning light broke in through the windows and Harry’s room and Draco had to take a moment to fully realise just where he was. Despite the fact that the embrace he found himself in had become somewhat of the norm for them, Draco still had to take a moment to take it all in.
His determination to allow himself time to get used to living without Harry har proved to be a massive failure, and as he lay on still sleeping Harry’s arms, Draco realised that as long as he could get anything at all from Harry, he was going to take kt.
Draco ran a hand over Harry’s chest, even if it was covered up he knew of the lines that hid underneath, the dark magic so painfully lodged in Harry’s chest and Dracos complete and utter inability to do anything a little it. Part of dravo cursed himself for not knowing more about the area he was supposed to know the most about, cursed himself for not knowing enough to get Harry to stay.
That really has become the main thing for him, he realised with a deep feeling of dread, but he also knew that it was completely out of his hands.

When they had gotten back to bed, the full weight of Harry’s exhaustion hit him all at once. It had seemingly accumulated over the course of two restless nights, making him realize he had probably only slept marginally more or better than Draco, who hadn’t gone to bed at all.
Harry had still been asleep by the time Draco stirred, pulled back into reality by the touch drawn across his chest. While it failed to make him open his eyes, his breathing did change, subtly disturbing the steady pattern of his sleep.
Over the course of the night their embrace had relaxed, and Harry started to become conscious of it as the day slowly settled around him. Bending his arm, that had otherwise fallen back against the pillows, outstretched, Harry settled his hand against the nape of Draco’s neck as a formless caress.
