The sight of Draco in his doorway made Harry’s shoulders settle, only then realising just how on edge the interruption had left him, and how unprepared he felt at the prospect of having to face any other coworker.
“Hey,” Harry exhaled as he eased into his chair, a little incoherent from the conversation Draco had strung up. “No, you’re alright.”
Alright was an understatement; although he felt like he had already exhausted every possible emotion over the course of the weekend, Harry was happy to see Draco here. Harry tried not to overthink it, tried to really focus on the fact that Draco was just checking in, but the lines of their relationship had become so muddled that it was hard not to.

Draco couldn’t help but smile at that, somehow relieved that Harry actually wanted him there, even if part of him knew that they were probably always going to be drawn to each other like that.
“How are you holding up?” He asked as he walked further into the room, still finding that whatever was between them was so uncertain that he really didn’t dare to commit to anything; fearing that he would overstep the invisible line that they were both toeing.

Throughout the day, Harry had lost all sense of self, lacking any grasp of how he was supposed to navigate this situation, and it made Draco’s smile feel like a victory, gratifying and relieving to see.
Harry’s posture eased another bit more as he instinctively swivelled his chair away from his desk, half a thought to get up and meet Draco halfway. He refrained.
“Hiding away in here,” he said with a tired smile, sheepishly encouraged by Draco’s. “I’m okay, I suppose. All things considered.”

Draco nodded thoughtfully at that, having been genuinely worried about Harry’s general health, even if his visit to his office had been far more a social call than one he made in his role as healer. The line was getting ever blurrier and Draco knew that most of his care in Harry’s health was directly tied to how he felt about him personally.
“Good,” he stated, a soft smile on his lips.
“You should take it easy,” he added, having seen just how poorly Harry had been faring during the weekend, but still feeling hopeful that they’d be able to turn it around.

Not knowing what to say to that, Harry resolved to a small, tired smile for an answer. It wasn’t that he disagreed with the sentiment, but it was hard not to feel helpless when everything else slowed down around him; he had been able to do so much the last time his life was as threat, that that it was hard to swallow that perhaps this time, it really was out of his own hands.
“How are you?” he instead asked, itching to take the focus off of himself and his well being. “Are you done for today?”

Draco shrugged at that, still having a hard time in feeling like a proper part of the team at the ministry, but he knew that he did good work and Hannah was always quick to defend him and try to make him feel included.
“I am done for today,” he responded, finding that to be the easiest question to answer.
He desperately wanted to ask Harry if he was coming back to the manor with him, but he didn’t want to appear presumptuous, so he felt like he had reached a stalemate.
“I wanted to check on you before going home.”

The fact that Draco had come to check on him made Harry’s heart stutter a beat, finding that they had already lived through kinder versions of this conversation before. He loved Draco for even thinking to stop by, but could cry at the prospect of each going their separate ways.
“Thanks,” he replied with a soft smile. “I think I lost track of time a bit, so, yeah - thank you for checking.”

There was something endlessly vulnerable about seeing Harry so worn and tired at his desk, knowing full well that he probably should have taken another day in bed. There really was no way for Draco to stop worrying and caring about Harry far too much, unsure if he really had it within himself to stop showing it.
“Of course,” he said in a gentle voice, unable to stop himself from smiling, recognising just how silly it all seemed.
“Someone needs to make sure you get home safe,” he added.

Tipping his head back against the headrest of his chair, Harry’s eyes skimmed over Draco’s figure, a growing awareness that his presence was becoming more and more unnecessary by the second; Draco seemed aware of it, too, judging by the quirk of his smile. “Yeah?”
Though Harry couldn’t help but mirror Draco's smile, tired and dazed, the weight of Draco’s absence and distance washed over him to the point it was almost unbearable. No matter the absurdity of Draco’s presence, Harry desperately didn’t want him to go.
“Are you offering?” he said with a shadow of a smile, and what was intended as a tease came out too tender, his expression too full of gratitude and hopefulness to be anything but sincere.

The question, no matter how juvenile, washed a wave of relief of Draco, desperate not to leave Harry’s presence but also too aware of just how unnecessary his presence were in Harry’s office. He knew full well why he had stopped by Harry’s office on his way home and while he was a little embarrassed by the fact that Harry clearly did too, it was a relief to know that Harry clearly still felt some of the same.
“If you think it’d be beneficial for you to have your healer present,” he stated, a soft smile undercutting the formal sounding statement.

Harry’s smile widened at that, Draco’s smile and ease washing over him in a way that was infectious; for the first time today, Harry felt his shoulders settle just a little.
“I think so,” he replied with a lopsided smile, in the interest of playing along.
The lines of what they were had long ago muddled, but through it prevailed that Draco was, indeed, his Healer. If that was what it took for them to justify Draco’s presence, Harry was willing to take it, however hollow it still made him feel at times.
It changed his smile slightly, softening it at the edges.
“I’d like that,” he found himself rephrasing, gentler. Unable to properly commit to the joke, he instead needed to reaffirm that who he wanted there was Draco, not his Healer.

The addition made Draco’s head spin, realising the weight of what Harry was actually telling him, while they were both still trying to keep up a facade of not being desperate for each other. It almost made him sick when he lingered on it for too long, so he decided not to, knowing that there was nothing to be done about it.
“Come on then,” he said in a soft voice, afraid of the level of emotion that was likely to betray his voice if he spoke too loudly.
“Let’s get out of here.”

_____

There was something about heading into the weekend together that made Harry’s stomach flip with something equally hopeful and dangerous; it was Friday afternoon and Draco had not long ago shown up at Harry’s office and, one after the other, they had gone through the Floo back to Malfoy Manor. It all seemed like it belonged in a parallel life that Harry somehow had gained insight to, and it was becoming harder and harder to spend his days anywhere but here.
No matter how lovely and real it had felt when Draco had stayed over at Grimmauld, there was a degree of escapism about the Manor that made it easier to put his dire state aside. Stepping into the kitchen, light and ample, it immediately felt better.
Making an effort to keep the tile floor tidy, Harry stomped his boots on the hearth, trying to knock the ash off them.

While it had been absolutely lovely to stay at Grimmauld together with Harry, Draco couldn’t deny that there was a certain comfort in being together at the manor. It was where it all started after all, and it seemed easier to believe that nothing bad had ever happened between as long as they were just the two of them at the manor.
Once Harry appeared in his kitchen, it seemed impossible not to smile, looking forward to being able to spend the weekend together just the two of them, even if he knew that it was a bad idea.
“Welcome back,” he stated with a wide grin, not even caring enough to hide just how thrilled he was.

Looking up at Draco had a boyish smile tugging at Harry’s lips, growing incrementally wider with each beat of his heart. Harry wanted to stretch this moment forever, live in it; that first wash of relief there was with being alone and completely out of sight from the world.
“Thank you for having me,” he grinned, and though the laugh downplayed it, he really meant it.
Crossing the distance between them in a few steps, Harry braced himself with his hands against Draco’s sides, stepping so close that he thoughtlessly tipped his chin upwards.
The smile remained etched into his features, bright and full of adoration. “How are you?”

The easy way in which Harry managed to invade his personal space, hands immediately finding his sides and moving in close, always managed to make Draco’s head spin. It seemed so easy when they got to be like this, embracing and not having a care in the world; he wanted to stay in that moment forever.
“Good,” he stated with a soft smile, better now, he didn’t say, not wanting to throw the balance of what little world they had managed to create together.
“How are you holding up?” He asked as he wrapped one arm securely around Harry’s waist, holding him close and making sure that he didn’t lose his balance.

Something about Draco - his touch, his smile, his voice - made Harry’s smile go lopsided, and a small twitch to the corner of his mouth shaped an indistinct word he thought he had seen in Draco's eyes, as if trying it on for fit.
“Better now,” he replied, the smile that accompanied it less suave as it was childish, almost daring to say it was a parroted reply to something Draco looked like he had been able to swallow down.
Grinning, Harry ducked his gaze. Encouraged by the pull of the embrace, he further closed the distance between them by brushing his palms flat up Draco’s chest, the motion less suggestive as it was appreciative.
“Really ****ing happy it's the weekend.”

There was something extraordinary about hearing Harry say the words that he hadn’t been prepared to voice himself. It made a grin spread even wider on his lips, relishing every little confirmation that Harry actually wanted to spend time with him.
“Yeah, me too,” he said while holding Harry closer still, feeling relaxed and cherished in a way that they really shouldn’t allow themselves to do anymore. Still, he leant down to place a kiss on Harry’s forehead, his free hand found Harry’s hair, gently playing with the dark locks and just allowing himself to become reacquainted with the push and feel of Harry’s body.
“I’ve been looking forward to it.”

When Draco pressed a kiss to his forehead, Harry couldn’t quite remember when they had become something where that, too, was afforded them. They had ended things, Harry remembered it vividly even months after, but he had quite possibly never felt this greedy about someone’s affection before, and being here felt a little like cheating himself back into Draco’s good graces. He couldn’t for the life of him get himself to care, not if it meant getting more than stolen kisses in empty offices.
Barely allowing Draco to fully straighten his posture, Harry’s hands on Draco’s chest became purposeful, catching on the fabric there to keep him close. Harry stretched with almost desperate release to properly meet Draco’s lips in a kiss. It was the easiest thing he had ever done; he wanted everything Draco could offer him, but particularly this.

The kiss felt like such a natural extension of their embrace that Draco didn’t have to think for as much as a second before kissing him back.
His grip on Harry’s hair became more purposeful, using it to hold his head in place and to keep him close, wanting to properly enjoy the time that they did have together.
It seemed like it was in another lifetime that Draco had told Harry that they couldn’t have this anymore. In fact, he was beginning to doubt that it had even happened, unable to properly conceptualise a world in which he would let himself go without this.
While hhis feelings for Harry, and how deep they actually ran, had been a great source of stress for him in the past, Draco had started to find comfort in it. He knew that he was desperately in love with Harry and as long as he got to kiss him every now and then it didn’t really matter whether or not Harry loved him back.
