Janine Allen

Janine had come home a few hours ago, and gotten busy right away. There was a lot she had to today before going to bed. Fixing a dessert for the blog, shooting a quick video for Instagram and answering some emails. Then up early again for work in the morning. Sometimes Neen would question herself on whether or not this was worth it. If she were to be honest with herself, though, she loved all of it. The work at the bakery wasn't heavy and it paid decently - not a lot, but enough to pay her expenses. The blog was fun and it brought a few pennies here and there. And, despite it sometimes getting a bit confusing, living with three other people meant she wouldn't feel lonely, even if it was just knowing there was someone else around.

Tonight had been a lazy day, so she'd chosen to just make a no-bake brownie, share the recipe and call it a day.

Once the post and video were done, and she'd gotten her bite, Janine unlocked the door to her bedroom and went to the kitchen with the tray. "Brownie is up for grabs!" She called to the rest of the house, before going back to her bedroom to grab clothes to change into after a shower.

"Oh. I've got the bakery truck, anyone needing an early-morning ride?" She added after a few moments. While the ride would have to be somewhere in her way between home and work, it wouldn't be a bother to have company for the rest of the drive, and it wasn't an everyday thing, as she only had the truck when she had to stop by for a delivery or to pick up something to bring back to work. Couldn't hurt to ask, right?

As she waited for someone to say whatever, Janine made her way to the bathroom and rapped on the door gently. "Anyone here?"

Thursday 4.30pm

Charlie had heard someone return home, and even though getting out of bed would have been a good idea; they were just so darn tired! It usually got like this at the beginning of the week after long weekends but today was just a crash and burn day. Charlie had achieved nothing. They hadn't even gotten up to brush their teeth yet. Rolling over to look at the time on their phone they unlocked it with their thumbprint and swiped it open. "4.30pm" the time on the phone glared at them. With a sigh, they decided it was probably good to at least put in some kind of appearance with the world as 12 notifications told them there was things to be done. But it would have to wait. Setting an alarm for about 3 hours would be just enough sleep to shake this tiredness. Or so Charlie hoped.

Thursday 9.20pm

Charlie's alarm on their phone beeped and vibrated them into a groggy wake. Charlie stretched and looked around, the crack in the curtains told them it was either late or really early. Looking at the time on the phone, they jolted up: the whole entire day was gone. And nothing had been done. There was 27 notifications to show them their absence was duly noted. It was out of character for Charlie to sleep a whole day away but they just needed to sleep. Laying in bed, they pushed the comforter away from themselves, they had gone to bed in pyjama shorts with Panda faces on them and an oversized band tee. The band was some obscure indie band from forever ago and the logo had almost entirely faded from being worn and washed constantly.
Pulling themselves out of bed they heard someone call out, not hearing much other than "Brownie" Charlie's stomach protested in hunger. Opening the door and making their way down the hall and almost bumping into Neen who was stood in front of the bathroom.
"Oh hey! sorry didn't realise you were home yet" Charlie mentioned trying to not give away the 'Just woke up' tone too much.

Thursday, 5:45 PM

Thursdays were always busy for her but today, it seemed, was simply not her day. Starting at 8:30 am, she had non-stop lessons until 5:30 pm, a grand total of 17 lessons ranging from voice to classical guitar, from jazz to rock. She was getting less sleep now than compared to what she got at uni, thanks to her doubling the number of students she accepted and her addition of free 'trial' lessons. But that's okay, thanks to moments like these. Her desk was cleared off, save for the body mat draped across the maple surface. Her classical guitar, practically her own child, rested gently on the mat. Earlier in the day, her string snapped while tuning, giving her no excuse to do one of her favourite things to do, clean and restring her instrument. With a warm mug of coffee and headphones softly singing tunes of Spanish music, she began the placid process of removing strings, scraping grime from frets with steel wool, reapplying oils and polish to the finish of the surface of the guitar, all before tying the new set of strings onto the guitar. She loved being entranced in the process, lost from the mindless movement while also being so focused on the little details. It was second nature to the musician. Now, with all the done; the guitar laid to rest in its case, waiting for the strings to set, Melody crashed onto her bed.

Thursday, 9:23 PM

At the announcement of brownies, Melody left her room for what seemed like the first time for the day. Between back-to-back lessons and a string snapping, the young teacher didn't have time to take a break or eat lunch even. With her hand wrapped in wire from her strings, she began searching through the drawers in the kitchen. "How early is early-morning?" A soft voice called out, briefly glancing over her shoulder as she awaited an answer before averting her gaze as she fumbled with the contents of the drawer. "I could use a ride downtown. My car's still in the shop." She had hoped that between the extra intake of students and busking for a few hours during the week, she could save enough money to rent out a studio for both lessons and recordings while she searched for a full-time placement at a school. "Finally..." She murmured, pulling a Ziploc bag from its container. She turned, leaning her back against the corner formed by the counter as she took the coiled wire from around her hand and sealed it in the bag. With that taken care of, the woman was lured by the rich aroma of chocolate, the realization of her hunger as she grabbed two centre brownies from the tray and returning to her spot. "Mm so good.." She whispered, almost in an embarrassed manner with a hint of awkwardness. She was the newest addition, she was still adjusting and felt weird enjoying the homemade goodness.

Thursday 4:45pm

Liam ran his hand through his sweat drenched hair. Glancing in the rear view mirror of his Pontiac Grand Prix, he noticed the grease smudges and stains on his cheeks and forehead. It had been a hot day and even hotter within the garage he worked at. The large fans within tried their best to handle the heat but only succeeded in blowing the hot humid air around. He had been working on an old Mazda 3 that came in with a blown gasket and cracked water pump. It was more of a project than it waiting on the owner to come back since it had been sold to the garage instead of scrapped. The old Mazda had plenty of life left in her but needed lots of TLC.

He sighed and opened his car door. First thing he needed was a nice cool shower. He let the door shut on its own before climbing the few steps to the front door of their house. He took one last glance at the driveway, noting that Charlie’s bike was still there. “Well at least someone is home.” He thought aloud, then he unlocked the front door.

Inside he made his way past the kitchen and living room before heading up the stairs. The downstairs seemed void of life with no laughing and yelling between the roommates. Later on it would become a more lively place. He quickened his pace to the last bedroom on the left and shut the door behind him. Liam then proceeded to take his stained work shirt off and toss it in the laundry basket before grabbing a clean set of clothes from his dresser and a towel from the back of his door. Then he hurried across the hallway towards the bathroom.

Thursday 9:30pm

After his shower, Liam decided to go back out and do a little archery to free his mind from work. The clearing was only a fifteen minute car ride from the house at least. He had shot arrows at a stationary target for a good three hours. In all honesty, it probably would’ve been longer had the dark of night not set in. He always seemed to lose himself there.

Now he was home again, parking in the barely lit driveway. He wasn’t the only one it seemed though. The delivery van was parked out front this time. He smiled as he walked inside once again. Neen had just passed into the kitchen, hollering about brownies being ready. The chocolatey smell made his mouth water. He veered into the kitchen, flashing a smile before grabbing one for himself.

“Thanks Neen. They smell great!” He grinned before taking a bite. They were nice and cool and fudgey. Perfect with every bite. “How was work?” He asked.

Janine Allen

Janine was happy to be home and done with her workday. And also very happy to have a tasty treat to offer her roommates, as she knew they all led busy lives and something nice to eat after a long day was always soothing. Seeing Charlie's exhausted expression worried her, but she smiled warmly, not wanting to call attention to it. "Hey. I've been home for a few hours, did some writing and stuff. Clocking out of everything now. Go eat."

Melody's question made Janine pause to think and check her schedule on her phone. "5:30, is that even useful to you?" It did sound way too early for someone who didn't work at a bakery to be out and about doing anything, but hey, she wasn't the one to judge anyone else's schedule. If leaving their apartment this early could help anyone, she'd honestly enjoy having some company on the drive, or part of it. Seeing Melody enjoy the brownie got a smile out of her. It was so good when she hit the spot with her cooking or baking - or in this case no-baking - and it always made her feel proud. "Super easy to make, doesn't even need an oven." She commented, mostly to make conversation.

Her attention then turned to Liam, and Janine couldn't help but laugh a little as he went straight for a piece of brownie. "You're welcome, glad you like them." The question about work made her smile. "Busy. Just finished with some writing and stuff. Tomorrow, it's everything all over again."

After finally answering the questions she needed to, Janine marched her way back towards the bathroom. "If anyone bothers me while I shower, I'll bake your favorite treat with a whopping dose of laxative." She threatened with a smirk before finally getting in and closing the door behind her.

Charlie gave Neen a smile and a nod as they headed into the kitchen to grab some brownies, Charlie already knew they'd be good... there was seldom something Neen cooked that Charlie didn't delight in. As they headed into the kitchen they realised everyone else was home as well. Charlie put on a pot of coffee (so anyone could grab some) and grabbed a chunk of brownie and snaffled it away in a paper towel for a little while later. Midnight was prime time for brownies. The warmth of the brownie made Charlie snap out of their thoughts as they pulled their purple unicorn mug from the cabinet, added the coffee, a spoonful of sugar and a pump of caramel syrup into their mug and stirred it till all they could smell was sweet coffee aroma. Holding onto their brownie + coffee they took a seat at the small table that was in the "dining room" which was basically a kitchen extension that they'd added a table and a few mismatched chairs to.
"Did any of you have an exciting day?" Charlie asked the room in general, then took a small sip of the overly sweetened coffee, which was just how they liked it. Charlie thought about how little they had done today and hoped the coffee would help them wake up and maybe be able to do something productive with the rest of the day... maybe even go for a late night cycle, that usually helped feed their blog-spiration, which was a term Charlie had coined for getting into that sweet part of their mind and being able to write enough to maybe make some money from. But it hadn't really mattered because everything they made was for their own luxury anyway. Well, that and their roommates. Charlie was saving up to maybe help some of them things they really need. Which was usually what Charlie did. But this was going to be something exciting. Keeping it a secret was going to be hard.

"Oh! I almost forgot some most exciting news! I am planning on doing a movie + drinks night in our living room tomorrow night. What's everyone's requests for the movie suggestion hat? Snacks? Drinks?" Charlie said with more chipper. The coffee was definitely doing it's job as they sat there waiting to hear everyone else's ideas. This was Charlie's favourite part of the week... Roommate social night! Ignoring the time, Charlie set to work on their brownie, breaking a piece off and popping it in their mouth. Tasted like heaven, and Charlie had expected nothing less.

Thursday, 9:35 PM

Her shoulders drooped, a slow sigh leaving her lips. 5:30? AM? "Yeah.." Another sigh escaped the brunette, a delicate hand running through mocha locks, debating whether or not she would be willing to wake up at such an early hour. If she left at 5:30, that gives her roughly 25 minutes to scope out an area to set up before the music store downtown opened to buy new strings, giving her a head start to the day compared to waking up just a bit later and then having to haul equipment downtown on foot. "Yeah, yeah. 5:30 would work." Melody called out before taking another bite of the brownie. "I'll have to keep that in mind, maybe show me one day." As she replied and the others began to emerge, Melody kept herself wedge in the corner of the two meeting counters, occasionally stepping to the side without a word, silently getting out of the way of anyone who needed her to.

Hazel eyes flickered between the handful of people remaining in the kitchen, waiting to see if anyone was going to suggest anything. It felt wrong to voice her opinion first, after all, this would be her first social night since moving in. Sure, she has heard about them, the other talked about when she first moved in but she still didn't know the atmosphere of the event and feared suggestion something of the wrong vibe. Instead, she quietly waited for someone else to speak up first.

Liam swiped a coffee mug from the cabinet. It was a simply black mug with a small chip near the handle. It wasn’t like this was his favorite mug or anything but it felt routine to use this one. He glided over to the percolator, grabbing the steaming carafe and poured the hot black liquid into his cup. He liked it this way. He never did add sugar or cream because that would take away from the bitter rawness of it delectable flavor. Liam winced as he tried it. He could tell it wasn’t his favorite coffee since it tasted nothing like Colombian. But he would make do as he usually did. Liam never did like to cause a fuss if he could help it.

He listens to Melody’s conversation with Neen. The thought of waking up before 7am made him shiver. He could never do the bakery life with those early mornings. Being at work by 9:30 was a much better option for him.

When Charlie asked the question about the Social Night, Liam glanced up from his thoughts. “Anything horror or comedy. I like both.” He replied after taking another sip of the coffee. “Did any of you see the Conjuring? That made me jump out of my skin the first time I watched it. Oh and I’ll buy some popcorn for it. Everyone okay with butter lovers?” He asked. Liam really did enjoy Social Night. It was nice to see every laugh, scream or cry together. He had been living here for almost a year now and he looked forward to this each week.

Janine was feeling better now that her day was over and that everyone was grabbing a snack. It was one of her things, taking care of others. Even at work, it was just like Janine to offer help whenever she could. Now, feeling that she'd done her duty, Neen finally let herself relax. It had been a busy day, but a nice one. Letting out a long yawn, covering her mouth and rubbing her eyes afterwards, she took a moment to stretch, listening to everyone.

Charlie's question made her smile. "I got to do a wedding cake tasting for this really cute couple in their late sixties," she offered with a sigh. "They were so nice and excited to be having their wedding, I wanted to hug them."

After this explanation, she perked up at Charlie's suggestion of a movie and drinks. "Oh, cool! I can grab some bags of salt and vinegar chips. Can someone grab something for us non-drinkers or do I cover that too?"

Janine nodded when Melody decided that 5:30 would work. "Alright, awesome!" She didn't mind the company and dropping Melody off whenever it would be most helpful, as she would drive out anyway. "Sure, whenever you want. Just hit me up." She replied to Mel's comment on showing her how to make the brownie.

She was still out the bathroom when she heard Liam's suggestion. "Nope. I'm not watching anything horror, unless one of you plans on sleeping in the living room with the lights on and keep me company." Neen shook her head and finally closed the bathroom door to have her shower. It would be bedtime for her soon.

Charlie laughed at Neen's recoil in the thought of watching a horror movie. They turned to Liam "Yes, The Conjuring was a fantastic movie, I even paid for their live stream they did from the actual house a couple of months ago.. it was so creepy for sure." Charlie smiled at Melody whom didn't seem to want to suggest anything but Charlie wasn't going to push it.
"Well, Horror movies are out" Charlie said almost sadly, but wasn't going to risk anyone having to feel uncomfortable. "So, I'm thinking, comedy would be a good idea. I'll put the 'Hat' aka the empty mayo jar on the counter and y'all can add whatever movies you want to be considered and I'll pick something at random" Charlie mentioned to those who were still in the kitchen, which at this point was everyone except from Neen, but they could fill her in later.
"Also, don't feel you have to get anything at all! Just write what y'all want on the fridge list and I'll pick it all up! I will cover drinks in both senses and happy to get specifics if people want!" Charlie declared in a very matter of fact way. They liked to run these events and never expected the others to pay for anything, but some of them usually contributed snacks or drinks, and Charlie secretly hoped Neen would have some kind of dessert for them, but they'd never say that outright.
Charlie finished their coffee and the last of the brownie they'd picked up from the counter and walked over to the dishwasher, put the cup in after a quick rinse and put the paper towel in the bin. Knowing the others all had to be up early meant that they'd probably have the house to themselves for a bit, which meant they could do a massive clean down and destress, that always made Charlie feel better.
Charlie pulled their laptop off the table and slumped on the couch and booted it up, it was time they did something, or at least made it appear as though they were doing something, but by reflexes, they ended up logging onto their social media accounts, sharing a few memes, tagging Neen in a post about their awesome brownies, and then switching over to steam to find a chilled game to play to feel like they had at least done something today... even if it wasn't as much as they had hoped.

Thursday, 9:42 PM

Hearing Liam speak up, Melody averted her attention towards the male, amused with the conversation of horror movies. Turning back, she caught the gaze of Charlie smiling at her. Pale lips straightened, forming a thin line before the corner tugged upward ever so slightly into a faint smile in return. Melody stifled a hard yawn as she went and tossed her napkin away, hazel hues shifting towards the oven to check the time. '9:42. Damn.' She thought silently, she really crashed for three hours after work? An action so unlike the female who was so accustomed to working hours after the last lesson of the day, learning pieces for her own repertoire or developing lesson plans for newer students. This time, however, it seemed Melody could not shake the exhaustion away. Slipping the baggie of wires into the pocket of her bomber jacket, she made her way through the kitchen, stopping to scribble something onto the list on the fridge. ' Root Beer & Ice Cream. ' was written in a delicate cursive. Movies, snacks, and a delicious root beer float to top it off. She took out her wallet, slipping a twenty dollar bill under the magnet that held the list as a means to contribute before finding an empty spot on the couch, wordlessly.

Liam listens to Neen’s joke about horror movies. It looked like no scary movies this time either. He shrugged and grinned at her. He could live with comedy. He listened to the talk around him a bit longer before he felt a yawn creeping up himself. After rubbing his eyes and walked over to the paper and wrote down vodka and Cheetos. He would buy them and some mixers for the less hardcore. After yet another yawn he started out of the kitchen.

“I’lol catch you guys tomorrow. It was a pretty rough day and I’m getting tired.” He said as he waved. Then he started up towards his room.

He closed the door behind himself and flopped on the bed. It felt so comfy that he was almost falling asleep there. Quickly he sat off and tore off his shirt, tossing it in the dirty clothes bin, before grabbing his phone and popping on some music. He enjoyed listening to Linkin Park so he selected his favorite album Living Things before closing his eyes and losing himself in the songs.

Janine was happy to supply snacks and whatever else was needed. She was grateful Charlie was willing to cover drinks, and wondering if she could find the time to make some cupcakes or something of the sort. She was pretty sure she could, as long as she planned ahead. It was something nice she could do for the household, after all.

Letting out a soft sigh, she turned on the water and hopped in. While she would love a long shower, Neen suspected she would fall asleep if she took too long. So, her shower lasted a few minutes, just enough to clean up from the day and putting on sweatpants and an old T-shirt. It was good enough to sleep, even though she wouldn't be caught dead dressed like this in public. This was home, though. If one couldn't wear whatever they pleased at home, where else could they?

After brushing her teeth and getting her hair on a pony tail, Neen stepped out of the bathroom and went to check out the list on the fridge. Deciding whatever there was to drink would be okay, Neen chose not to put anything on the list - she added her own list, though, titled "Cupcake flavors", before getting a water bottle to take to her bedroom.

Once that was taken care of, Neen wished everyone a good night and went to her bedroom for some much needed and wanted sleep. Tomorrow would be another early day, so she'd better get some rest. Before falling asleep, she still checked her social media and gave Charlie's post a like. Now she could relax and get some sleep, finally. The day was definitely over now.

Charlie closed their laptop after they heard Neen go to bed, Melody was sat on the couch, and Charlie smiled at them, "You alright?" they asked as they got up and put their laptop on the side cabinet. Even though Charlie could have put it in their room, it was much better for it to be out here, and Charlie trusted their roommates completely.
Stretching out as a click in their knees and elbows warned them they'd been still for far too long, Charlie got to their feet. It was late, and outside was dark, that was the best time to be awake in Charlie's mind. It's also why they probably didn't, nor would they ever have a real job. But it was fine because, they still contributed where they could. What was the point in being rich if you didn't share it with those you care about, and even those you didn't. People didn't deserve to suffer, at least that was Charlies thoughts. Their parent's hadn't agreed and told Charlie they needed to grow up and learn what hard work was, but they hadn't completely cut them off. They kinda had a job, but for all intents and purposes, posting photos and articles wasn't really a "job" but it kept them paid (by their parents) anyway.
Charlie walked towards the kitchen and emptied the dishwasher, drying and putting the dishes away. Emptied the trash and replaced the bin liner, and gave the countertops a clean down. Then set to cleaning the coffee machine, it always got so clogged up and Charlie couldn't understand why. They really wanted to upgrade to one of those fancy coffee machines, and Charlie was definitely going to bring it up next time they all sat down for dinner together.
Charlie looked at the list and made a mental note, but left it there for the time being, in case anyone wanted to add anything when they got up. They however had noticed that Neen had put up a list about cupcake flavours and that made Charlie very excited.
Cupcakes and cheesecake was Charlie's favourite desserts.
Charlie wrote haphazardly "Strawberry Fudge" for a flavour, it sounded delicious, but whether it was an actual thing, Charlie had no idea.. but if it was possible, Charlie knew Neen would be able to do it.

After a bit more cleaning and tidying, as quietly as could be, Charlie said night, in case anyone was still awake or listening and headed off to their room, Charlie would get a shower in the morning, when everyone else wasn't home. They'd planned to this morning, but well this morning hadn't occurred. Charlie pulled off all their clothes and put on a pair of boy-shorts and a thin vest, and flopped on the bed. Feeling better, but still exhausted, by the time Charlie began to fall asleep, there was a hint of sunrise heading their way, and thinking about tomorrow, Charlie set the alarm for 11am, and passed out. Feeling excited about what tomorrow would bring.

A soft melodic hum escaped the musician as she processed Charlie's question. "Yeah, I'm straight. Just tired" She answered dismissively with a lazy shrug of her shoulders. "You?" She added before she eventually diverted her attention to her phone. It was something simple she tried to do every day, to just sit down in the living space with the rest of her roommates and focus on something outside of her craft, even if it was just mindless scrolling through social media. It was still helpful in breaking herself out of her timid habits, preventing her from locking herself in her room and grind through piece after piece. Over time, a soft yawn was built, cresendoing in strength before she submitted to her own drowsiness. It was for the best, she tried to reason with herself, even with her after work nap, she still had to rise in the early morning.

Friday 8:30am

Liam stirred from his sleep. He was still a bit groggy as he forced off the covers. The pale morning light seeped into his room through the blinds, causing him to wince slightly as his eyes adjusted. Another day of work and he had to be there by 10. Just enough time for a quick shower and some coffee. He never really ate breakfast anymore, mainly because he was never hungry after first waking up. Instead he would grab a donut or something while he was out.

He stretched then hurried out of the room to check the coffee maker. Someone had already set up a fresh pot this morning by the smell of it. He grabbed his favorite mug, a black one one that said don’t F*ck with me before Coffee, and poured some in. He sipped the hot bitterness, instantly feeling more awake. After a few more minutes the cup was empty and he started towards the shower.

Fifteen minutes later he was out and he checked the clock on his nightstand. Almost 9:15 now. He would need to hurry up getting dressed and rush out the door to make it to work on time. So quickly he threw on and old black Tee and some well worn jeans, grabbed his bag and hurried to his car. At least it didn’t take long for him to get to the shop. His phone said it was 9:40 now so his cut off the engine in the parking lot and pulled out a pack of Camels to light one up.

The Human/Doctor: But you made me.
The Doctor: Exactly. You were born in battle. Full of blood and anger and revenge. to Rose. Remind you of someone? That's me, when we first met. And you made me better. Now you can do the same for him.
Rose: But he's not you.
The Doctor: He needs you. That's very me.
