Harry responded to that with a smile, genuinely appreciative of the prince's offer; yet, at the same time, inevitably distracted by the movement around them. Harry's eyes flickered from the prince to a point behind him, the smile only barely stiffening up back into politeness.
The two young men had crossed the across the courtyard on their on, yet, as they approached the gate, Harry became witness to what was undoubtedly a practiced dance.
The royal advisor, now on his horse, and a guard fell into line with them, the horses at a relaxed walk; behind the prince, another man flanked them, and Harry had no doubt in his mind that another was behind him as well.
Doing some attempt into softening the gesture, Harry turned slightly to glance between him and the prince, meeting the eye of two other guards kicking their horses to a walk. When one acknowledged Harry's gaze with a nod, Harry returned it with a smile.
The smile remained on his lips as his eyes finally found the prince's, as they exited through the gates. "How often do you visit the city, your Highness?"

Being unable to leave the castle without at least two armed guards with him at all times had been a part of Draco’s life for as long as he could remember. It wasn’t something he actively thought about anymore and while he was pretty good at ignoring the fact that he was as guarded as he was, it was still something that bothered him most of the time.
The conversation with Harry helped distract him further though and he was deeply thankful that the Greek seemed very keen on talking. It was pleasant and Draco could feel himself relax when he could focus on their guest, rather than the guards surrounding them.
“Not as often as I’d like,” he said with a warm smile, deciding to just focus on talking with their guest for now. “As you can tell, it’s quite a show when I have to go to the city.”

There was some comfort in knowing that the prince was aware of the severity of his escort; whether or not he found it excessive, Harry couldn't tell, but even if the comment was only added for Harry's sake, he still appreciated the gesture.
"Do you feel like that affect it?" Harry asked, interested enough to tread lightly around what was possibly a sensitive subject. There was a soft and reassuring smile still on his lips. "The way you experience the city."
Harry had knowingly skipped the first half of their conversation, not seeing the point in pretending they had been raised under comparable circumstances. Harry knew well enough that monarchies tended to shelter their heirs from harm, and seeing as the King and Queen only had one son, Harry wasn't bold enough to disagree with their decision to have the prince escorted when he left the keep.

Despite the heavy surveillance Draco was under, he still felt like he could talk slightly freer with Harry than he was usually able to. He still made sure to keep his tongue, not wanting to accidentally let anything slept in the company of his father’s advisor, but he still wanted Harry to know the truth.
“I can’t see how it couldn’t,” was what he left it at, not talking too loudly. He knew that it would be frowned upon if he made it too clear that he didn’t enjoy the escort, but Harry seemed to have picked up on it on his own, so he just had to hope that they were actually on the same page.
“I do what I can to come out and meet my people where they are anyway, but it is not easy.”

Harry only nodded at that, having figured as much. He hadn't dared assume whether or not the prince was aware of the inevitable distance armed guards created to the prince and his people; Harry was pleasantly surprised to hear that the prince kept that as part of his considerations.
"How about your father, His Majesty the King?" Harry continued. Around them, ordinary buildings took shape. It was only a matter of time before Harry's attention was caught by the foreign architecture and people, turning to look as they passed.
"How often does he visit his people?" Harry added after his distracted pause, eyes darting back to the prince, wanting to still encourage and engage in conversation.

Draco did find that question to be one that was tough to answer. He didn’t think very highly of the king himself, so it was difficult for him to just not write him off in wrong of their guest, but he also knew that that would be a bad move from him and very out of tone, so he was going to have to find a more diplomatic way to put that.
“He doesn’t enjoy the show,” was all he managed to say, knowing that Bartholomew was right in front of them and was probably hanging on to every single word that Draco was saying. He loved to find any way to punish the prince.

Harry hummed at that, able to patch together a sufficient answer. Harry hadn't found the king to be much involved with the tending of his guests, and the notion that he wasn't one to visit his people didn't surprise Harry.
However, he also noted as he turned to glance down another far more interesting sidestreet, Harry knew that that didn't necessarily mean he was an unfit ruler.
As they advanced through the city, the street began to widen, eventually leading into a paved plaza. Here, the striking beauty of the cathedral was undeniable, though the grandiour of the architecture still felt foreign to Harry.
"My prince, sire -" Bartholomew called ahead of them. He turned his horse, urging it to circle around itself in order to flank the prince. "The Cathedral of Jean Baptiste."

The cathedral was a very familiar place to Draco. It had been one of the few places he had been allowed to go as a child and teen and it had been a kind of a safe space for him while growing up and it was a nice idea that he would get to share that with a foreign guest, even if he knew that it wouldn’t be quite the same to Harry as it was to him.
“Thank you, Bartholomew,” he said with a polite but curt smile. He wasn’t much interested in having Bartholomew around more than what was absolutely necessary, but he knew that his presence was a necessary evil on this trip.
“This is one of my favourite places,” he told Harry, his tone much softer and sweeter when talking to Harry.

Harry, whose thoughts had already gone off on different tangents, quickly moving far away from Catholicism, was quickly brought back to the starting point of their conversation; Harry was inevitably surprised by the sincerity of the prince's words.
Eyes refocusing on the cathedral ahead, Harry did his best to hide his surprise as he once again met the prince's gaze. "Then I'm honored that you want to share it with me, your Highness."
Harry's voice was gentle and genuine, if only due to his intentionally chosen phrasing. To match, a smile appeared onto his lips, thought it was the sweetness of the prince's expression that brought it to light, not the prospect of spending the day in a church.
Wanting to do everything possible to keep that tone in the prince's voice, Harry went on with an encouraging: "It is breathtaking."

Even if Harry wasn’t saying anything that Draco didn’t already know, the cathedral was indeed breathtaking, it still brought a smile to his face. Draco only had very limited knowledge of the ways of life of Harry’s people, but he did know that they weren’t traditionally catholic, something that always caused his father great disgust, so it meant more to him to have Harry appreciate a place so steeped in religion.
“Thank you,” he said, even though he had next to nothing to do with the church. Still, it felt like a personal compliment from the foreigner and Draco did appreciate that, even if he didn’t know what to do with the feeling it caused him. “We are going to be meeting with the minister who is in charge of the church at the moment. He is a good man, so do not worry.”

Harry couldn't say he was thrilled at the prospect of spending an afternoon in the presence of a priest. It wasn't that he was unfamiliar with the culture - he had, after all, been raised peripherally Christian - he just didn't find it particularly interesting. However, the smile on the prince's face was plenty enough reason for Harry to play along with the charade.
"I look forward to meeting him," he answered, voice almost encouraging. The honesty in his voice stemmed from genuine interest in the prince.
"I noticed you have a Chapel within the keep," Harry continued, wanting to continue the conversation, even if it meant talking about mass. Harry's eyes had once again turned towards the prince, his horse autonomously following the direction of the mounted guards ahead of them. There was a soft and genuine air to his expression. "Do you attend Sunday mass there or at the Cathedral?"

Draco was pleased to note that Harry seemed keen on keeping their conversation going, especially considering the fact that Draco was unsure what they would be talking about. Sure, he was enjoying his talk with Harry but he wasn’t around people his own age a lot and thus had no idea what they could possibly have in common, or even what they should be talking about.
“My father wants to keep us at the palace as much as possible but I attend mess at the Cathedral whenever he will let me,” Draco explained, having always found the cathedral a much better place for worship than the chapel they had back at the palace. He knew that his father was paranoid though, so he didn’t get to attend mass at the cathedral nearly as much as he would prefer.
“It is some burden to be the sole heir, but I feel that it is important to at least be somewhat involved with my people and for them to see me.”

Harry nodded at that, finding that the King's worries were justified. Unqualified to say whether or not the precautions were necessary, however, Harry couldn't say. The streets had seemed peaceful as they passed through them, but Harry knew better than to expect this to be the case always. Thoughtlessly, his eyes had drifted forward; the silhouette of who Harry assumed was the preach, had emerged from the Cathedral doors, waiting for their arrival.
"If you don't mind, Your Highness," he instead started, eyes once again darting back towards the prince. There was an almost boyish urgency to is voice, as if wanting to speak his mind before they were in the company of the priest. His smile was wide and interested, more interested to see the prince during mass than seeing the empty shell itself. "I would like to accompany you for mass - whether it be here or at the Chapel."

Draco had done enough reading about the culture of his guest to know that the greeks weren’t traditionally catholic like himself, so it surprised him to have Harry offer to join him. It was almost touching in a way and Draco didn’t know what to do with the emotion that it invoked within him, but it didn’t feel appropriate.
“I would quite like that,” he said with a kind smile, wanting Harry to know that that was something he would quite genuine enjoy. It was nice to have someone his own age around for once, even if the two of them were probably very different; yet Draco wanted to learn so much more about him and his culture.
“Let me make introductions,” he started as they reached the priest, doing his best to not seem too close with his preacher. “Father, this is a foreign diplomat from Byzantine, Harry. Harry, this is Father Jehan.”

Harry's eyes darted between the prince and the priest, needing a moment to mentally process the change of their spoken language. He turned to the prince for any kind of support, and was relieved to find it as soon as the prince spoke.
Harry turned towards the priest with a polite and interested smile.
"Thank you for having me, Father," Harry said, he too speaking in French when addressing the priest. The usefulness of these particular words meant they were perfectly mastered, only a slight accent audible in his voice; that was, however, not to say that Harry felt confident in his exchange.
Out of practice as to how to greet a priest, a slight yet visible hesitation moved through him. His instinct was to reach for the priest's hand, but the man had not offered his to shake. Instead, Harry followed the greeting with a bow.
Harry knew that catholic priests still held mass in its old roman latin, yet that wasn't a strong indicator of whether or not the rest of the exchange could be had in Latin. This left an additional uncertainty about the introduction, hoping both the prince and the priest were willing to see through it.

Even though Draco’s knowledge about Harry’s culture and religion was limited at best, he did know that the Greeks usually did not subscribe to the some God that Draco himself did. That was also why he was so moved by how respectful his guest was being, having not expected differently, yet still touched by the sincerity.
Father Jehan seemed pleased as well, not usually one to be too stuffy, and sent the foreigner a gentle smile.
“We are pleased to have you here, son,” the father replied in his native French, finding it to be the thing that made the most sense. It seemed that Harry had a fairly good grasp of French after all, so it didn’t seem too impolite.
“Are you staying for mass, your highness?” The father asked, his attention back on the prince, even if the title of your highness seemed stilted in coming from the father, making it a little too obvious that it wasn’t how they usually communicated together.
“I am sorry, father, but no. I am just accompanying out guest on a tour. I will make it to mass sometime this week.”

Harry shifted his posture, allowing the prince and the priest to carry out their conversation without his intrusion. He had stepped backwards, eyes moving towards the grandeur of the towering spires, though not out of earshot.
For a moment, Harry considered interjecting, assuring the prince that he should certainly not feel obliged to spend the day in Harry's company. That being said, the prospect of spending a day alone with the advisor was daunting enough that Harry, selfishly, kept silent.
Instead, Harry put his trust in the fact that that, surely, was implied. Refocusing his attention on the men before him, Harry sent the prince a smile, acknowledging his words.
"I do hope I can see it, though," Harry added, voice kind but almost timid. Finding himself lacking the French words to fully articulate that he hoped he could be taken on a viewing of the cathedral's nave, his eyes flickered between the priest and the prince in an attempt to judge whether or not he had made himself understood. Or, if it had been implied that they were not to visit the Cathedral as much as to see it. "Is mass about to start?"

The way Harry kept showing genuine interest in the church and going to mass warmed Draco’s heart. It felt very special to him that Harry would want to be a part of his culture in this way and thus join in on something that he very likely did not believe in himself.
“In an hour,” Father Jean responded, having switched to Latin to speak to the guest. It seemed far more polite to speak a langue that they were all comfortable with, rather than just the one he and the prince preferred .
“We will be on our way again by then,” Draco promised, not wanting to overstay.

Harry nodded at that. Though appreciative of the gesture of the Frenchmen both switching to Latin, his understanding almost exclusively stemmed from the prince’s parting words. To Harry, an hour had seemed like plenty time. Yet again, he figured, he didn’t mind foregoing the viewing if both the prince and priest agreed that it would take more than an hour.
"Then I will be back another time," Harry promised with a polite smile. Even though the prince had agreed to bring Harry along for mass, Harry still didn’t dare include the prince in his statement. It would, however, make the viewing immensely more interesting.
"We can still view it from the outside, yes?" he asked the two men, though his eyes sought the prince, who, after all, must have had he deciding power. "Would you walk with us, Father? Do you have the time?"

Even if it was probably just to be polite or due to customs unknown to Draco, it still greatly warmed his heart to hear Harry include the father in the viewing of the church. Father Jean was someone who meant a whole lot to Draco and even if it wasn’t something they flaunted, it meant a lot to him to get to show Harry his favourite church together with his favourite pastor.
“It would be my pleasure,” Father Jean said with a pleasant smile, pleased to be included by the younger foreigner. It was clear that the young man had a natural curiosity and father Jean did hope that he would come around his church again.
“Thank you father,” Draco said with a warm smile.
