(This is a reboot of Lady Kate’s wonderful Winterball RP ~ posted by permission)

LadyKate43 wrote:
The evening of the Winterfest Ball had arrived. Weeks of preparation were at an end. Kate had the dressmaker, Mrs. Snead make a dress from cloth that she had chosen. It was pure pink silk and pink lace. The dress had a sweetheart neckline and full ruffled hem at the bottom. She had Ann, the head housemaid help her with her hair. Kate looked in her vanity mirror as Ann braided her hair and pinned it to the top of her head. The rest of her auburn hair fell loose in the back to her slender waist.

Lord Lyons shook his head as he walked into Kate's open room and stood behind her.
“I would like you to wear this tonight. This is your mother’s tiera and you have grown to look like her every day. She would want to have it.”
Kate sat breathless, “Papa it’s beautiful. My how handsome you look in your new uniform. Is there anyone special you want me to meet?”

Lord Lyons shook his head, “I learned my lesson. No more match making. Dance with anyone you wish.” Kate scooted her chair, rose and hugged her father and kissed his cheek, “Relax, have a good time tonight.” Kate sat back down as Ann pinned the silver, diamond, and sapphire tiara in her hair.

Lord Lyons and John entered the main hall together. The whole manor was decorated for the occasion. A 10-foot tree was in the corner of the parlor and opposite the parlor was a marble and alabaster spiral staircase. The banister was dressed in a rope of greenery as were the windows and the main door has a huge wreath with a bright red, taffeta bow. The manor’s kitchen permeated the air with baked chicken, spiced apples, oranges with clover.

Kate did not realize the main hall was full of male officers as she descended the staircase. She was proud of them all, for they had just fought some major engagements months earlier, pushing the Orcs, Trolls, and their minions back to the Barren Lands Of The South. Currently the land was safe as the pass was closed and a time of celebration and feasting was in the air. She saw her father and brother John talking to an officer she had never met. She had only seen him when he arrived at 14. He was a scared and shy child that picked up swordplay quickly and stayed mostly to himself. He had grown into a tall, muscular, and handsome young man. He and her brother were going to be knighted in the Spring. She ambled to her father’s side confidently though so many eyes were upon her. Prior to this night all the soldiers were told to keep 10 paces away from her. They would be confined to quarters. Kate managed to hide in the bushes, trees, and the attic to gain a glimpse of shirtless men fighting target dummies. Kate smiled warmly as she approached and semi-curtsied, “Good evening, Happy Winterfest Gentlemen and Welcome!”

Cedric was nervous. He had not been to this manor in some time, and though he remembered his time here, he was driven to try and be good at his studies and training. He never felt comfortable around people, but due to his platoon of men managed to hold the flank when the orcs attached from the highlands, Lord Lyon wished to speak with him.
“I read the reports of our victory. It appears you had a hand in its success!”
“Thank you, sir. I just did the best I could.” Cedric answered.
His son John said,
“Cedrics platoon was given the important task of watching the left flank at the pass. The flanking attack was unlooked for yet could have been disastrous for us had it succeeded.”
John gave Cedric a nod and a smile. Cedric started to feel his nerves ignite under his skin, and he worried he would start to perspire. He shuffled slightly and said,
“I lost six of my men, nine counting the wounded….John here deserves the praise for leading the counterattack…”
Lord Lyon cut him off. He turned and had everyone face the stairwell. Cedric paused, then turned and stood tall at attention. A beautiful young woman made her way down the stairway and looked around with a smile. Their eyes locked but for a moment, but Cedric sensed a slight familiarity. She was a young girl reaching toward adulthood then. Now she was a young woman. He remembered the orders they had while there. Lord Lyon’s daughter was not for their eyes! Yet now she approached, and Lord Lyon stood there beside him. Cedric smiled as she greeted them, and remembering his courtesies, bowed slightly to the lady. Lord Lyon proudly said to all there,
“Ladies and gentlemen, my daughter Kate.”
Cedric tried to avert his eyes, but her smile had captivated him. He almost missed hearing her brother John introduce him to her.
“Kate, this is Cedric, lieutenant of the 7th Platoon of the King’s Infantry.”
Kate smiled and offered her hand, and Cedric took it gently and bowed and kissed it. He said,
“It is my honour to meet you Lady Kate.”
Lord Lyon watched the exchange carefully, then took his daughter’s hand and turned to formally introduce her to some of the other officers. Cedric sighed as he took a breath. He was a mere lieutenant junior grade, one march out of cadet school. He was given the mountainous flank position because it was the least likely place to be attacked. Yet the orcs surmised this and had made every effort to break his line and cut the road supplying the rest of the army. His men were mostly recruits like he, green in battle. The old sarge was the binding that held them all together when the attack started. When he fell shortly after the attack, the men waivered. Cedric stepped in front and stood over his sergeant and rallied his men to stand. He could not be prouder of his platoon….
“Refreshment sir?”
Came a voice of a maid carrying a tray. Cedric set the empty wine glass on it and took a fresh one.
“Thank you.” He said to the serving maid as she smiled and walked on. Cedric took a breath. He had to remind himself that this was a celebration, and he needed to forget the war. He turned and smiled as another officer came over to talk, but he would glance over at Lady Kate as she met all the other officers.

Kate was happy to her father's young officers. The battle fresh on their minds and a ball so soon. She was nervous to be among so many that she saw training as boys and teens. It was the young lieutenant that caught her eye. Jon spoke of him and his bravery. At last, she knew his name. He father introduced her before her friends were released from the ballroom. She merely smiled and gave polite nods. The young officers in new dress uniforms were striking. This was her first to attend in her own home.

She approached The young man facing him, "Good evening. Would you mind escorting me to the ballroom? I am very nervous and my friends await meeting Papa's officers."

Cedric smiled when he saw Kate approach and gave her a slight bow. “M’lady, It would be my honour to walk with you to the ballroom.”
He turned beside her and offered her his arm. As she took it, Cedric hoped his nervousness did not show.
Cedric looked to Kate and said as they approached the arched doorway to the ballroom, “You look quite elegant tonight Lady Kate.”
As they crossed into the ballroom, they paused inside the doorway and Lady Kate looked for her friends. The musicians were tuning and there were people gathered in groups talking.

The room looked smaller than it was filled with guests. Kate clutched the cloth of his jacket, she whispered, "Cedric, please take me to the dance floor. I feel all eyes on me. I am sot used to all this. Moma said this day would come. I should have asked, "Are you in pain? I heard you were wounded."

edric tensed as he listened to her words. Did she see the scars on his wrist? He blinked his eyes and the sudden flash of memory hit him of the beserker orc jumping down from the rocks onto him. The start of the music brought him back just as suddenly. He looked over to Lady Kate and saw an ever so slight sheen on her neck. He put his other hand over hers and felt a slight shaking. Cedric took a breath and calmed himself in hopes he would calm Kate, and as she turned her head and looked to him, Cedric smiled and tried to reassure her.
"No, m'lady, I am not in pain. Of my wounds, I have healed well. Maybe if it is permitted, I would very much like to walk with you through the gardens later this night? Maybe then we could speak more of our victory if it pleases you."
Cedric didn't wait for Kate's reply, for he stepped forth and turned to face her and took her hand, and stepped close and slid his other hand around her waist, and they started to dance to the music that had filled the ballroom.

Kate was happy to know he was alright. She strolled to the middle of the dance floor; grabbed a handful of her dress and held his tremoring hand. She held his hand firmly to steady it, She mouthed …breath… as she placed her right hand on his shoulder. She gave him a slight nod and mouthed, ready. In a downbeat, she pressed his shoulder slightly. She stepped back on her right foot as he moved forward with his left. "Breath and I will make us look good. You are dashing in the new uniforms."
She was in step with him. When it was time to turn she pressed his shoulder. He guided her with gentle presses of his hand. "I have not had a good partner in months if ever. Yes. I will walk with you in the garden after this song. Glide us toward the terrace and we be outside."

Cedric was slightly embarrased that he had spent more time dancing with swords than with beautiful women and started off a bit rusty. He could see her friends watching as they turned, and more people started to fill the dance floor. He noticed Lord Lyon watching from the doorway, his eyes squarely on them as they danced, and Cedric wondered if they disappeared from the ballroom so soon would cause concern. But looking into Lady Kate's eyes, he smiled and turned and floated through the arch to the terrace.

As the song came to a close, Cedric held her hand high as she turned and spun around once, letting her dress bloom before stopping facing him. Cedric smiled and said,
"You are a wonderful dancer Lady Kate! I am sure every officer will want to dance with you. I am honoured that I was blessed to dance with you first."
The chill air of the clear night wasted no time at biting at them. The moon threw it's silvery sheen over the land, and Cedric said,
"Maybe it was folly to come outside on this wintry night."
Remembering his manners, he started to remove his dress jacket to drape over her shoulders.

Once they were outside he began to take off his outer coat, 'Leave it on follow me. It is warm in here." She grabbed his hand and led into a hedge maze. She led him partly through and stopped at a hedge that s faint glow emitted behind it. She opened an unseen gate with a key on a chain. The gate unlocked with a squeal. She opened the rod iron door, "In here we will be warm and not bothered. It is enchanted. This was my mother's garden."

Cedric looked around to see if anyone was watching them steal away. He didn't want Lord Lyon to reprimand him for being away alone with his daughter. But he was the guest of the household, and Lady Kate invited him.
He quietly followed her as she eagerly told him of this place. He looked around, and though the shadows of the moon closed about, it felt warmer. He squinted through the shadows and said,
“Your mother’s garden? I can smell the scents even now in the dead of winter!”
Whether he could smell any scents of flowers and herbs, he realised that Kate stood before him. He gently breathed in, and her scent seemed to calm him of his anxiety.
“M’lady, you must have many such obscure places to go on this estate. Thank you for showing me such a special place. It must be dear to your heart.”
He reached out and took her hand and held it gently.

She held his arm with both her hands, "Come let me show you around. You get too hot, please remove your coat."

She held his arm and looked at his eyes. "This is my favorite place. You have been through a lot from the moment you arrived. I am so happy we can be together again. I had hoped to spend special days with you. Our fathers seemed to manage other plans. I do not have to hide notes. I saved yours, all of them. They were like getting little treasures."

The garden was full of jasmine, gardenia, and cherry trees. The rock path led past fragrant and ornamental flowers. A swing for three welcomed the visitor at the far end of the path. Behind it was a pool made of stone and shale. Water cascaded tranquility down a river rock wall.

Cedric smiled, clearly becoming more comfortable in this beautiful garden with Lady Kate. During his training here, his infatuation with her had him taking serious chances. Trying to guess where she would go and leaving notes for her in hopes that only she found them, it was a risk he was willing to take. Though it was only a couple years ago, it seemed so much longer. As they walked together toward the swing
"It warms my heart that you saved all those notes Lady Kate. Remember that day when my training was done and I got my orders. I had to leave the next day."
He looked to her as they came to the swing. The sound of the water danced in their ears, and slight beads of mist started to cling to them. They turned to face each other and Cedric reached over and touched Kate's cheek. He said in a soft voice,
"I risked it all that night to see you. I have missed you so."

Kate blinked tears, " It was so worth the risk. I missed you so much. I was afraid for you but I knew you were going to make it. You are mentally tough and resourceful. I knew you would find a way out of trouble."

She sat on the swing as he spoke. She released her mana into his hand as he held his hand to her cheek, "I wanted so badly to join the healers. I could not leave. I was in the middle of mage finals. I had to stay and make sure Princess Amanda passed. It was a promise I made my Godfather long ago. Your back and I am able to be close to you. Cedric, I do not want to be apart from you again."

With Kate's words, it seemed the sound of the water arose in intensity. Cedric said as he sat down beside her,
"Yes, I am back, and seeing you, being here with you, has reawakened me from my dark days. I thank thee Lady Kate for keeping me in your thoughts. I could feel you with me, even in the midst of battle."
Knowing that he could, and eventually would, get orders to leave this place again, he could only hope they lingered in coming. He brushed a wayward tear from Kate's cheek. He could feel a surge come from her, and his hand lingered, feeling the silky softness of her skin.
"We could have used more healers in the field. There were too few there Kate, too few. But the healers there also suffered loss. I would fear for you my lady, even though I know in my heart you would have done well"
He said as he looked into her eyes, caressing her cheek again.

Kate felt there was more than he was saying. The sadness was an overwhelming loss, "You are free to let your guard down. I will never criticize or gossip. What you tell me stays secret. I feel what you do. You will never be able to hide your pain from me. Never fear me, Cedric. I can take my fox form and sneak out. How long has it been since you slept well?"

"Sleep well? Too long m'lady. The last time was that night before we marched out, when I snuck up to your room to see you before I left."
Cedric sighed, feeling the strength of Lady Kate beside him. How could he keep what he experienced inside? She sensed his pain, and likely could feel it. He had come back a changed man, and she could tell. His eyes wet and he finally said,
"I know I can trust you in all things m'lady."
The sound of the water and the desire to sleep well again washed over him and hegrew warm. Cedric stood and removed his jacket and took a deep soothing breath before sitting back down next to Lady Kate.

Kate hugged him, "I got you and I will stay with you as long as you need. You have been brave and strong. No one can see us."

She rubbed his back and neck."I understand, Papa and Jon both have terrors. I will get you through them. Relax. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes. I am right here. I am in your dreams. You are in the pasture of the 500-acre lake. The sun is warm on your face and we are fishing. You have a fishing pole and a bucket of fish. In the distance unicorns and mythological creatures frolic. You are having a good dream. Breath. Deep breath. We are catching fish. It's getting hot. We are going for a swim."

She walks him to the lake and guides him to the edge. She steps into the water wearing her chemise and bloomers...

Dreaming....... the water is cool.... he watches as Kate lowly sinks into the water.... as if a hand reached for him, he falls face first into the lake....

~ Pain shot through him as he jumped, he lay hearing the moans and cries of wounded men. Did they hold? Where were his men? A hand settled gently on his shoulder and calmed him. They had held! He would have been food for the orcs had they not .... the healer's breath wafted over him and he fell back into memory ~

Cedric threw back his wet hair and it settled smoothly as he emerged anew. He smiled and laughed and turned his eyes to Kate...
"What if I said I wish you to stay forever?"

He was floating on his back and the mage momentarily lifted he hand he was thrashing in the water. Memories came back to him and he began laughing. He spoke, "What if I said I wish you to stay forever?"

She threw her arms around him and nodded, "I would stay with you as close as possible for eternity."
She pressed her lips to his and held him for as long as he wanted.

Cedric heard Kate's words, and he dropped under the water and came back up in her arms. He shook his head and water sprayed from his hair as he looked at Kate. He tried to keep his eyes on hers and not be distracted by the water lapping at her chemise. He stuttered as he said,
"Could... could you do that? Would I be worthy of being a Royal Guard of the King? How?..."
He stammered, the thought of not having to go to war unless the King did so himself.... he brought his hand to her cheek, and let it caress down her neck until it disappeared under the water. He took a deep breath. He was sure he was in her mother's garden, and on his healing bed, and with her two years before. Time seemed to merge in his mind, with the silky feel of her in his hands keeping him anchored. He pressed himself to her and kissed her gently.

She smiiled as he was curious. Her heart was beating out of her chest after the first kiss. She had to know where the relationship was going. The mage loved Cedric and he would follow her. She kept her promises. She was lost in his kiss and this would be the only time she have him to herself. Her body felt things she was weak in his strong arm. Her mind was on their conversation and the night would not last forever. He tasted like spiced apples and his scent was intoxicating.

After a moment she took a breath, "We better sit before we do something we will get in serious trouble for. I know we could not stand being apart again."

Kate climbed out of the pool. She dangled her feet into the water. "You saved the day. You could have any duty you want. Besides, King Atrious is my Godfather. He and Papa would want me to be happy. Cedric, I do not desire to be a lord's wife. I want a hypothecary shop in town."

She held his hands, "I have another request. I wanted to ask you first. Would you mind me going before Papa to him to grant you permission to be my protector?"
