The sun shone through the foliage of the forest in bright ribbons, cascading through the canopy onto the ground below. The leaves danced gently in the breeze, reflecting their color and painting the area in a green ethereal glow. It was a soft, warm wind that tickled any in its path as a gentle touch from a mother would. The trees themselves were spaced far apart from each other giving ample room for sunlight. Grass and fern littered the ground below wherever they could grow, but remained short and sparse enough to allow passage. This was not natural nor was it the norm.

The lost woods, as the citizens of Hyrule have known the area, was anything but beautiful or safe. Dead foliage and greenery encompass the entire forest, and since history began no man, woman, or child that has entered past it's borders has ever come out again. They simply vanish, giving the place its name. All who enter become lost. Because of this little history has had little effect on the wood, remaining almost unchanged for millennia, until Ganondorf finally came into power. His dark powers having the same effect upon the outskirts as the rest of the land, nothing was safe from his influence after all. Brambles replaced gentle bushes, and the trees shed their leaves, yet grew further still, fed by malevolent energy instead of the sun which had ceased shining upon this cursed world. A new more fitting name would certainly be given to this wood had there been a populace to do so, but no being had set foot near the wood since the collapse. The place all but forgotten to history.

Within the boundary of the wood, the fog was thick and almost suffocating. The white mist seemed to always be moving, changing, and adapting to its surroundings, yet remaining unaffected by the wind. One could almost think it were a physical force, alive, as it was difficult to see anything at all in its thickest concentrations within the forest. The whispers heard upon the wind only helped enforce that theory. Never clear, as if just out of earshot, they would nonetheless be heard. In ancient times some claim they were guides to exit the wood, while others claim they led careless adventurers to their doom. Regardless of their intent, it was impossible to understand their mumbling.

Deeper still the forest became thicker. Stout trees growing so tall, the fog made it impossible to see even their branches. A temple of wooden pillars and brown, hard earth. These were not average tree trunks however. Twisted, gnarled and misshapen things they were, the bark peeling and flaking. So many disfigurements and shapes could be discerned, it was grotesque to say the least. Worst of all were the faces. Upon closer inspection one could see a face, twisted into horror, rage, or other various emotions, grown into the hulking trunk. They gazed endlessly into seemingly random directions, giving the constant whispers a focal point. It was maddening.

This was the legacy of the great lost wood. Untouched by Ganondorf, but not unmarred. For unknown to most of the citizens of hyrule, this forest was a sacred place. Far within the fog and twisted trunks, a path was clear. A hint of green along a shallow cliff, and then something no creature in Hyrule had seen since Ganondorf's return. The warmth of sunlight. The trees opened up to the green tinted glow of it, revealing a clearing that would hitch the breath of any peasant or king. It was framed by the shallow cliffs surrounding it, and the thick canopy of a massive tree at its center. Not unlike those great faced pillars outside, there was a clear face upon this grand tree, but unlike them it was serene. Calm and unmoving, it watched over the area with an endless gaze.

Below, one could see stonework. An odd sight to be sure in such a natural setting, but few would assume that this beauty could have grown naturally in such a time. The shape of three triangles could be seen with a stone pedestal at its center. One could instantly recognize the design as the holy Triforce. This was indeed Sacred ground.

Finally, below one of the massive outstretched roots of the great tree, there sat a man. A single Hylian man. Surrounding him were countless saplings and shrubs stretching to the edges of the clearing and even growing on the very roots of the great tree. He sat upon a stump untouched by time, speaking constantly and looking at each plant in turn, as if talking to a crowd. His face showed deep care for his audience, smiling gently as he continued. He was older, his white facial hair made that clear, but made no sign of showing it other than that for he wore enough gear to weigh down the average peasant. With each move he made to accent his story, the jingle of chain mail could be heard within his green tunic, and the crinkle of leather sounded out with each shift of his fingers. For any to come and see him in this state, they would most certainly assume him mad, yet he remained. The single living soul within the Lost Woods.

"Ok Dex, where are your feet leading you today? Cause you clearly have no freaking clue." Repeated the gun for hire as he wondered aimlessly through out the fog. He had been hired for a simple contract. Track down a small resistance movement located near the outskirts of the lost woods. "I wish I could see through the ****ing fog. I also really wish I didn't take these god damn contracts. That always end up making me have to solve some complicated puzzle..." Dex continued to ramble on as he followed the old dirt path besides the forest. All the while the fog that consumed the entire region made it impossible for him to see.

It wasn't long until he found himself utterly lost. To make things worse. Somehow or someway he was inside the forest now. "......****!" He screamed at the top of his lungs as he stood there in woods. His mind now clouded by the thoughts of being a lost lamb in the woods. To add to the creepy factor of the woods. Disembodied voices from all around him whispered to him. "I am not hearing voices...I am not hearing voices.." He said to himself as he marched through the woods. It was something about the unatural feeling that resonated off of the trees. The way the ground shifted beneath his boots. As if the woods itself was much more then a relic from days past.

Dex could feel his heart begin to race. The blood within his veins chilled. Which caused him to break out in a cold sweat. His hands shook, and his knees wobbled. Dex, was afraid. He hated to admit it, and it was indeed a obscured concept to him. Yet not even Lord Ganon himself in all of his power. Was enough to make Dex afraid. No, it was places like these woods. Places that as a child. He was told of dark and light magic which resided here. Maybe it was just old superstition, but as he stood there. His hands unable to reach for any of his weapons. His mind not strong enough to grasp reality. Old memories of childhood flushed through his mind.

The whispers continued to echo from all around him. Faces appeared from the tress. Cruel, malicious, and dark. He could see the outlines of laughter, madness, anguish. All the while he stormed through the woods. He wanted it to stop. "SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY!!!" He screamed. He lowered his hat, and try not look up at the trees. The fog before him indeed was thick, and caused him almost to run into a tree. Ok so he did acutly run into a tree a few times. "Damn you nature! Oh shut the hell up!" He screamed to the voices. He did not know if they tormented him. Maybe the woods were haunted with the spirts of his past victims? Maybe he had finally received the final blow for his past actions.

He had wished, begged, and even bargained for something to get him out of this place. He did not even care about the damn group of nobodies anymore. He just wanted out! Then it happened. The last step he had took flung him down a long ditch. His bodied fell much like a ragdoll all the way to the bottom. As he rolled downhill. He could only hope that he landed on something soft, or at-least something that killed him. Dex has some very bad luck. He found neither, but what he did find was a rock that caused him to black out cold. In this state. His mind wondered back to his days a boy. The familiar warmth of his mother's cottage. The taste of honey, and the warm glow that encompassed his mother's figure. Her golden locks, and bright smile that always placed him at ease. Maybe this was heaven? Maybe he had been forgiven for his checkered past? No, it was not. Darkness, violence, bloodshed, scenes of death replaced his mother's smile. A blackness which corrupted his very soul. He tried to fight it, but his cries out agony went unheard. He felt the life be sucked out of his very soul, and his face turn blue from the lack of oxygen in his lungs.

He screamed, and screamed untill he finally could feel his body again. He was awake, but in pain. The fog had somewhat lifted, but was still very blurry. He sighed, and checked for his equipment. Everything was still in order, and atleast his respirator still functioned. He sighed, and tried his best to stand. "Hmm..No broken bones. Well that is a plus.." Then the sudden pain of a sprained ankle shot up his leg, and caused him to curse in pain. "****!" He sighed, he had to continue on. So he did. The whispers still continued, but this time around. They felt as him they were not there to drive him insane, but almost as if they were guides to someplace. He decided to just listen, and let them lead him. It wasn't long untill he discovered a bright light through the tree line. "A clearing??" He inquired to himself as he limped towards the light. It was! A clearing!? "Holy ****! Thank the damn gods!" He exclaimed in a excited manner as he entered the clearing.

It was there though. He spotted an odd fellow seated on an old stump. He glared at the old figure, but did not approach. He made it this far into the woods, and somehow is still sane. Maybe, that could be up for argument. For argument sake though. He was sane, and decided that if he was lost in the middle of the woods. That maybe this old figure was someone who knew a way out. Even againts his best judgement. Dex limped slowly towards the figure. "Hello?" Dex greeted the man in a rather hushed tone. He did not want to scare the old man, but he also didn't want to give full awareness of his appearance there in the clearing. He didn't like this. Not one damn bit.

Greenery. Trees. Sunlight. All things that had been seemingly absent from the world for generations. There were even birds flying around somewhere just out of sight, true birds of feathered beauty, far distant from the bedraggled scavengers that ruled the sky in the further parts of Hyrule.

Armoured feet gliding of the ragged grass, the Zora forged on. She had been searching for a place to lay her head for at least a few hours these last two days. Weariness dragged at her eyes and limbs, causing some small measure of her iron self-control to flag. Her weapons hung away from her hands, out of reach should they be needed. A thicker than usual tussock caught on her metal sabatons, lending sudden resistance to her stride, which in turn caused her to overbalance.

A rather fancy way of saying that she tripped and fell on her face.

Spitting both curses and grass, the Zora pushed herself to her feet, looking for all the world like she wanted to murder an innocent tussock of grass whose only crime was growing too thickly in the wrong place. Damn your idiocy Rajaala! Focus your mind, you stupid girl! The mental self-rebuke flittered across her conscious mind like a flaming brand, scoring away the remaining vestiges of tiredness for a few moments as she brushed away the remnants of her ungraceful fall in order to continue onward.

Rajaala stalked onwards for a few more minutes, driven entirely by anger at this point in her exhaustion. Pointless, useless anger that served only to tire her more. As the steps were taken the insidious feeling crept its way back into her muscles and mind, looking to drive her to collapse where she stood. A good ten minutes passed in this state before anything changed, irate obstinance meeting harsh fatigue.

The change that came was sudden and entirely unexpected, trees giving way to gold and green. The small clearing before her sat in a shallow depression, a figurative oasis of thriving green. Something about this place felt... regal. Like some kind of lost holy place. Which means that there in the middle... was a Triforce. Of course. The place was empty, for now, and the three triangles gave a sense of safety here, like being cradled by a mother.

Rajaala stumbled her way out of the middle of the clearing to the far fringe, under the shade of a pair of conjoined trees. There she lay her gear almost lovingly down on the ground, before removing her helmet and using it as a makeshift pillow. With her being as tired as she was, there was no question that it was as comfortable as a royal bed. The Zora was asleep almost as soon as her head stopped moving.

Rajaala awoke with a start, cool shadows flickering across her vision. There was no noise. Nothing, beyond the breeze. And yet something, some instinct that demanded to be acknowledged told her she was no longer alone. She sat up slowly, body aching in not-so-silent protest. Her gaze took in the clearing and everything in it. The man in green caught and held her attention. Perhaps the hero? Come again to save us? A short glance to her side told her that her equipment had been moved, stacked neatly against the tree to her right. He knew she was here, that much was evident. He seemed to be speaking with the plants that dotted the clearing, turning to them individually and addressing them as if they were people. Mad most likely, probably dangerous considering his garb, yet strangely non-threatening. He had every chance to kill her, yet he had not. She resolved to stay a while and listen to him, see if there was any sense in talking to plants in this day and age.

Darkness. Water gently babbling against the pebbles of the shore, the occasional scrape as his bubble knocked the bank. How long had it been? His throat was scratchy and his body ached from how tightly he'd been holding himself. Some time ago his voice had cracked and he was reduced to quiet whimpers. It was hard to tell if it was fear or if he was starting to shiver from the cool water and the creeping chill of the grey sky but his body trembled violently. The sky blue bubble bobbed and shook with the force of his movements, spinning and lurching from side to side in an unnatural way. The shield itself looked scratched and oddly dull as if it had seen a battle. It flickered and rippled until suddenly-

Crack.

A small fine line raced it's way up the sphere, branching and growing into a jagged web. Milo sucked in a startled breath as the harsh sounds of crackling glasses filled the small space. Before he had time to act, the shield shattered with a large crash and the boy found himself tumbling through the water. His body was just heavy enough to sink halfway while being dragged by the current. The water was painfully cold, the icy water biting at him mercilessly as he floated along. Milo uncurled and scrambled towards one side of the stream before collapsing amongst the pebbles of the shore. He wanted to curl up again, but the rocks were too cold. Slowly, the boy stood up and made his way toward the dirt and patches of grass that grew a few feet away.

For the moment, Milo's mind was empty. Everything felt dreamlike as his eyes swept across the landscape. It was a forest, dark and ancient. A thick haze had settled and obscured the fine details of the dark forest, only revealing the massiveness of the dark twisted trees lined up before him. The trees stretched upward endlessly to the point that Milo stumbled backward trying to trace one up to its top. The sound of him thudding into the dirt died immediately, the ominous hum of the forest forbidding any interruption to its sporadic chorus of whispers. A little sapling sat a few feet away, tucked beneath several much larger trees. It was different from the others, sad but not wilted or dark. There was no way it could survive to get a woody stem when surrounded by all these trees. After getting back up, Milo cautiously made his way towards the sapling. He looked it over quizzically before noticing a small ray of light touching a few of the leaves. A ray of light. Not like any he'd ever seen before. He put his hand over the beam and felt the warm inviting but foreign feeling of the sun for the first time. Vota had told him about this feeling; about how the sky was bright blue like his eyes and the sun touched everything with this comfortable warmth. She said it was as if the goddesses themselves were enveloping their creations in a loving hug. Milo had wondered if the goddesses had gotten tired of loving.

Without thinking, the boy pressed his fingers into the hard earth around the little plant. His hand plunged into the soil to uproot the poor thing.

"I'm sorry about this, miss plant," his small voice was scratchy and quiet "It's only for a little while, and then we'll put you in a nicer spot,"

Carefully holding the plant in both hands, he wandered toward the source of the light. The light he didn't know he'd wanted to feel. It only took him a few minutes before he'd stumbled into a clearing. The haze disappeared entirely, and the cold of the dark forest fell away. It felt like a different world entirely. Milo sat, starstruck by the vibrant greens and soft golds and browns, the way the grass danced and rippled with each warm breeze, the countless small saplings sharing in this haven, a massive tree sitting in the center peacefully watching, and an old man fondly speaking to each plant. He spoke with a soft caring tone, like Vota when she was telling him a story before bed. He let out a sound, something between a chuckle and a sob. His vision clouded and he laid back, gazing up at the light streaming in through the leaves and listening to the sound of the man's voice for while before wiping his eyes and getting to his feet. He hadn't forgotten his main goal. He turned to the spot where he'd been sitting and scooped a handful of dirt out before placing the sad thing in the new hole and covering up its base. The plant already seemed much happier. With that done, Milo made his way toward the man. Not too close, of course. He could be dangerous, but he seemed like he cared about these little leaves with stems, so maybe he'd want to see the new one.

The boy opened his mouth to speak. Instead, his mouth opened and closed slowly and wordlessly as the boy openly gawked. He was trying his best to speak but his body refused every request. He took in a deep breath and gathered himself before finally letting out a small.

"h-"

"Hello?" a hushed voice rung out. Startled, Milo curled on instinct. A little trembling rock among the plants.

The ground shook ever so slightly with the trembling steps of the massive hulk that was Zuberi. The world was no longer the same and it had taken a lot of convincing from the others for him to decide and leave the mountains in search of help. Upon his back he carried all the food he could manage, so he looked much like a huge turtle with a stone shell. The hammer rested on his shoulder, the nicks and cracks stained in the blood and gore of battle. No more could he and his people be peaceful, no more could they sit and wait for the world to go back to how it was.

No.

It was his job, as their leader to do what needed to be done in order to ensure the rest of them survived. In the distance a forest came into view. If he could recall correctly, this was the forest the Hero spoke of. Perhaps here he could find the answers he sought.

Off into the woods he lumbered often his passing caused the weaker trees to simply fall over. It was when he noted the rocks they kicked up that he stopped. Unable to pass up a good chance to add to his stock, he began to purposely knock over more of the trees. In search of the rocks that were clutched in their roots.

Voices…on the edge of his focused mind were there. Whispers at first. Just barely registering as the giant worked for the meal that he so desperately needed. Even if the rocks that he kept slung about his back would have lasted him a bit yet, it had become second nature and habit for the creature to gather as many rocks as possible whenever he could.

”Why have you not returned?”

The voice of a child, familiar and filled with such sorrow and disappointment that the usually slow being whipped about to try to locate the source.

”So hungry….where are the rocks?

Another voice and he spun only to be greeted by the thick fog and dead silence of the empty woods.

”YOU LEFT US TO DIE!”

This felt like it was right at his back Zuberi stumbled forth to get away only to lose his footing and go crashing to the ground. Literally. A gaping hole now stood, like a wound torn into the earth itself and the giant of a beast had not time to appreciate the rocks that were to be found there. No. For he was tormented by the voices of those that he left behind. His people that he had left to save and yet here they were not telling him that he had left them to die. All of his people.

Even his own…

“NO!” he bellowed and took off. Faster than he had run in what felt like year. Tree after tree, fell to his might and did little to stop him until he finally burst forth into a clearing. Such was his momentum that it took him literally falling to stop him from trampling over those who had gathered there. Now, lying there on his face, the giant pushed to his knees painfully slow and gazed at the clearing. “Rocks?” is all he could ask slowly, his mind back on the original task at hand and ignoring the true significance of the place.

The man in the clearing showed a surprising amount of calm whilst the cacophony of noise littered what he would call his home. The surprise however, had worn out soon after seeing the zora sleeping quite soundly in the grove. Quite literally a fish out of water, but Daphnes soon recovered upon meeting the sleeping girl and set her things in order as she slumbered. To make it through the wood was not an easy feat, and the rest was warranted. Despite her weaponry she was clearly no harm to him or his family. As the new arrival rested, Daphnes went about his day as usual.

A quick patrol was easy enough, though more necessary than usual with his guest having arrived without his notice. He feared he may be slacking, so doubled the time for it this morn. The path through the wood ever clear for him, the trip was easy enough. The fog clearing as he approached with each step, he plodded through in his search and found and heard many new things in his forest. The thumping of quite large feat and the distant screams of a man in distress. On most days he would immediately seek out the possible threats, but something was off about this day. An old tale came to mind and the man gaped slightly. The zora makes one; steps in one direction two; and the screams is three. A story, no perhaps a prophecy, repeated through his mind and the old man smiled.

He returned to the clearing, smile still painted on his face, and sat atop the ageless stump amongst his old brothers and sisters. "I think the day has finally come." he spoke softly. If any had heard, it would be easy to tell it had been some time since the spoken word had crept passed his lips. "I know not of the fifth," he continued, "But four in one day can hardly be coincidence Mido." he looked to the largest sapling at the base of the stump, closest to him. "To be sure, I never thought this day to come. It has been so long." His head dipped back as he sucked in a heavy breath, eyes closing as a serene calm wrapped around him. "It is here regardless, and the freedom we have all hoped for may finally be within reach. May Father's Courage guide us." He clasped his hands before him in a soft prayer before opening his eyes once more.

"Well as we wait I suppose I can relinquish one more story." A strong gust rushed through the clearing just then, causing all the leaves to jostle to and fro. The sound they created caused Daphnes's smile to widen. "I know, it has been too long but know that it may be the last. You know as well as I that if this truly is the event Father spoke of, I will leave the forest." The wind stopped as suddenly as it began. "I know. Listen well then, for I hate repeating myself." He grinned wryly, and began his tale.

Half-way into the tale he noticed from the corner of his eye his zora guest awaken. He was pleased to see her remain calm, and continued his tale as if she was unnoticed. The next arrival, or arrivals rather, caused him to halt his story a few minutes later. A small squeak from his left was quickly interrupted by a strained but forced hello to his right. Making note to investigate the first later, he stopped the tale and turned to meet the new visitor. It was a Hylian male from the look of him, but garbed in something Daphnes had not seen before. Daphnes moved to respond to the guest, but was quickly interrupted by a thundering crash as a large Goron fell face first into the soft earth.

Prophecy, chance, fate, whatever name one would call such events meant very little to Daphnes at the moment as he could not help the bubbling laughter from staying in his stomach. It was a rich sound, full of mirth and humor and it was easy to see the the force of it was nearly causing him to collapse. He held firm however, and composed himself as quickly as one could hope in such a ridiculous encounter.

"My, my my. I was not expecting such dramatic entrances. Please, calm yourselves and join an old man for a while. Your journey was most certainly strenuous. Please, sit an-" He cut himself off as his gaze reached a small mound of rock that was new in the clearing. "Well now there's our fifth. Come young one it is safe here. Join me won't you?" His final words reached all four of them one by one, as he swept his arms through the clearing as if in invitation. His voice cracked some, his age showing, but it did little to lessen the joy on his face. For Daphnes was truly happy at this moment.

So at least the merc was no longer in the god forsaken hell hole of a forest. Now he was in a clearing with a old man, and well others? Dex winced in pain as he tried in vain to move his legs foreword. What could he do at this point? Maybe the old man, or the other strangers in the clearing had some herbs. He did still have a few supplies he could trade. It was only then after he had searched some of his pouches on his belt.

That the loud crash into the ground had caught him off guard. Down he went once again, but at least this time it was on soft grass. He laid there for a moment or two. His eyes gazed up towards the sky. This had not been his day, and he kinda wished that forest had killed him. Maybe this was the vengeful spirits of his past victims finally getting their revenge on him. Though now that he thought about it. If this was. They were very ineffective, and were better off dead. He would laid there for a little bit longer, but soon realized he had have to stand back on his feet eventually.

So with what little strength Dex had gathered. He pressed his hands up against the soft dirt beneath him, and slowly sat up. At least at this point he was semi vertical. His eyes met those of the fellow.."guests"? He was not sure what to make of this strange band of beings. Who could blame him after all? Yet something was unique about the old man. Something that made Dex feel welcomed, and at home. This was a strange feeling, and something he just couldn't grasp.

This had been a new experience for the mercenary. One that had left him a bit confused. For Dex at least, the corrupted and the cruel had been the only true sense of order in these lands. Maybe this is why when the old man offered not just kindness, but genuine sympathy for his guests. That Dex had been a little taken back. It could be that he had been jaded for such a long time. That and he was not accustomed to these genuine acts of kindness.

"So falling giants...woods that speak to you in your mind, and a kind old man..Yup this is going to be an eventful day."

He decided to listen to the old man. Who even with his age. Seemed to be very clear minded, and filled with wisdom. Maybe this was some type of blessing in disguise. If so, well Dex was lucky to be blessed he guessed? What had he done to be so lucky? Maybe some type of forgiveness for all the people he had killed? Also maybe some forgiveness for the villagers he may or may not of burned down. Alright so enough with the boring backstory. He watched the others as well. Something was indeed obscured, and off putting about these others strangers. Why were they even here? How did they get here? So many damn questions, but so far no answers. Ok so maybe Dex was overthinking his current circumstances.

All he could do now was heal up, and listen to what the old man had to offer.

The raspy voice that had startled Milo before didn't speak again, only grunted in place. Maybe they were hurt? Dangerous things don't usually say hello do they? Milo's curiosity was piqued and would almost have been enough to make him peek out if a sudden thundering crash hadn't made him tense his entire body tighter. His arm started to hurt badly from all the tension he'd been holding and his stomach grumbled in protest of his exertion. The commotion was over quickly, replaced by the slow but very audible sound of something fairly large moving and punctuated by a much deeper thunder clap of a voice.

"Rocks? it boomed.

It wanted to know about rocks? Was it looking at him? Milo thought about it and tried his best to stay still, but worrying about the amount of movement he made only served to increase his trembling. He tried to put up his bubble but nothing happened. Not even a flicker. Milo couldn't remember a time he'd felt so terrified. Where was Vota? She was supposed to come. She promised she would. Maybe she couldn't spot him so far away. Usually, he would start to sing his song but his throat was too scratchy. Even if it hadn't been, his voice would've been caught in his throat; she was never going to find him and it would be all his fault. He was going to get eaten by a monster. His face burned and his breath came to him in short gasps as his mind wandered into a dark place, a panic setting in.

Then suddenly, laughter.

It was a joyous hearty sound that dropped a blanket on all the terrible thoughts running through Milo's head.

"My, my my. I was not expecting such dramatic entrances. Please, calm yourselves and join an old man for a while. Your journey was most certainly strenuous. Please, sit an-" his voice cut short and the boy nearly jumped. He could feel the man's gaze on him.

"Well now there's our fifth. Come young one it is safe here. Join me won't you?"

Safe.

It's okay. The boy's body relaxed as if on command and after a moment's hesitation. He unfurled, his blue eyes looking up at the man for confirmation. The man's earnest smile and calm wise demeanor chipped away at Milo's worries, his own mouth opening in a surprised but ecstatic smile. The boy slowly got up and tread toward to the man, his movements eager but not careless. The old man stayed as his focal point as he plodded forward, his eyes darting from him to the ground and back up with each step. Only when he was a foot or so from the man did he dare to look elsewhere.

Milo's eyes swept over the landscape behind the man a bit. A lone tree towered over the small saplings covering the field, a serene expression colored an unmoving face on its trunk. It was weird, but not scary, maybe even calming to see the slumbering giant surrounded by its children. In front stood a smooth raised stone with a triforce emblazoned on its pale colored surface. There was a faint glow about the stone. A warmth that seemed to emanate from it. Milo's eyes were transfixed by the holy symbol. His hands held close to his chest as he relished in the feeling it gave him. He felt... safe. Like everything would be okay. He would've stayed standing as he was, but something much more important caught his eye.

Milo sucked in a breath and his legs moved automatically as he spotted the familiar blue-grey skin. He scampered and bounced with uninhibited glee as he made his way toward it.

"Vota!" he chirped in his weak voice as he went. In all his excitement, the boy managed to trip over his own feet and tumble forward, accidentally rolling toward his target for several feet before knocking into a nearby tree. After coming to a halt, Milo sat up, blinking until his eyes readjusted before turning to look for the Zora.

"Vo-" he'd finally spotted the Zora, and his heart sunk. This Zora was much taller, and had a harsh face. She wasn't like his Vota at all, save for the similar hue. His face dropped and his hands grabbed at the ground uncomfortably as he tried to find the courage and strength to speak.

"U-um, hello," his soft shakey voice was directed at the ground "do you know... u-um" he wanted to finish but his voice cracked and wave of sadness washed over him. He sniffled, trying his best to compose himself as he looked at the plants below him. Small droplets fell into the grass and he let out a small noise as he gave in.

Not an answer was given and the small beings about him did nothing to aid the chief in his quest for rocks. There was laughter as if this was not important, as if his quest for rocks was not indeed the best. Slowly….painfully slow…the giant of a creature pushed back up to his feet. The ground groaned and quake in protest to this weight and bulk though there was little heed given. Instead, the mighty club at his side was lifted to his shoulder. Eyes glanced around at the crowd, only to stop on the young Goron that had run toward the pathetic Zora.

“Wh..at…you….do…here?” words slow to start but the more he spoken the faster they would become. Emotion surging through him and giving the energy needed for a normal speed conversation. Heavy slow strides carried him toward the pair, each step giving the ground a tremble that only ceased once he was stop beside the Zora and Goron child. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?” he bellowed. “NOT SAFE. MUST RETURN TO MOUNTAIN!” The danger of this world, the lack of rocks, and this child would die without the care of his tribe.

“YOU TAKE CHILD FROM MOUNTAIN?!” Rage adding power to his voice as the club was brought down with slam beside the Zora. “WHY YOU DO THIS? CHILD NEEDS ROCKS AND MOUNTAIN!” Returning his gaze to the child, “WHERE IS YOUR MOUNTAIN? WHO IS YOUR TRIBE?” With the rage and concern flowing through him, there was speed in his voice and body more than there had been in the countless days he had been wandering looking for the salvation of his people. Now, he wanted to protect this child, to keep this child safe and return to where it belonged.

Everything seemed to happen at once, like some kind of divine providence had brought many threads of fate and circumstance to this exact spot at the same time, for all the wrong reasons. Fate was a fickle mistress, and yet she was always in attendance. This was a painful lesson learned over a century of existence, yet it rang no less true for Rajaala now than it did on the day her King died. In the back of her mind, she sought answers, some rhyme or reason for these happenings, yet not one was immediately forthcoming.

The Goron child had been a surprise, the rockling stumbled into the clearing with significantly less noise than she expected for one of its kind, yet she had let it slip from her mind for the moment. It was no threat. Likely as useless and numbly stupid as the rest of its kind. Her attention had been grabbed by the second arrival, a Hylian it was to be assumed. Dark clothing, tall hat and a mask of some kind. Regular looking shapes under his long cloak suggested the presence of weapons. Her conscious mind immediately classified him as a threat, an unknown. At least he could talk, as evidenced by his attempt at getting the forest madman's attention, but she wished he wouldn't. His voice grated across her like a metal shaver. He didn't seem to have seen her yet. Perhaps she should...

*WHAM*

No questions. No hesitation. Her instincts told her that this was life or death. It never occurred to the Zora warrior that they might be wrong. Her blade was in hand, thankfully still sheathed for now, without any real intent on her part. Her thoughts were empty, a void where only true focus held any purchase. The situation in front of her was quickly analysed and weighted, yet some... thing stayed her hand. Curious.

With some difficulty, she prised her mind open again to allow for more than thoughts of killing and destruction. What she saw almost drove her to laughter. Almost. In front of her, maybe fifteen yards or so into the clearing, was another Goron. This was much larger than the rockling that cowered off to the side, well into adulthood. Still probably just as dumb as the rocks it ate. Her countenance shifted ever so slightly towards relaxation.

As if drawn by her sudden explosion of movement, the rockling's eyes seemed to zero on her, lighting up in an odd way, as if he somehow recognised her. It began tottering towards her, squeaking and dropping into a roll. She had nothing but contempt for it, right up until she actually made out what it was squeaking.

"Vota!"

A name. It had no outward effect on her. Inside she reeled. Vota. A Zora name. She had known a Zora by that name, long ago. Vota was... had been a friend of sorts, always willing to laugh at and alongside her. She shook the feeling. It wasn't exactly an uncommon name. Perhaps this child had known another Zora by that name and simply mistaken her. It stopped, the light fading from its eyes.

"U-um, hello, do you know... u-um..." The rockling practically crumbled before her.

"No, little rock, I do not know." Her voice was raw from lack of use over the last few weeks, coming out a little raspy, yet still confident.

"Cease your blubbering. Begone before you embarrass yourself any further. Here I thought rocks were meant to be tough." She turned away, intending to show nothing but her back to this pathetic pebble.

"YOU TAKE CHILD FROM MOUNTAIN?! WHY YOU DO THIS? CHILD NEEDS ROCKS AND MOUNTAIN!" Oh lovely, the big one had opened its fool mouth. Rajaala wondered how exactly her day could get too much worse and was suddenly interrupted when the beast brought its club down hard on the earth beside her. Her steel leapt to hand instinctively, yet she did nothing with it. A sword wasn't going to hurt a creature that tough. Her halberd might, but it was a good few steps behind her. Should she turn for it, she would die. Of this she was certain.

"This rockling is not mine. As if I would bother taking one. I would wonder, perhaps, how you lost it, my coprolite friend?" There was bite there, intention to wound with words if not with anything else. Again she turned away, returning her blade to its home. Her attention turned to the mad old man once more, fixing him with a direct stare.

"I will wish you luck in dealing with the Gorons if you tell me the sense in talking to plants, old man. By the Goddess, you'll need it and I find myself curious as to why you do as you do. Is it perhaps to persuade them not to break your ankles?" Another barb, aimed at the dark and edgy one this time. Who knew that she had so missed company that she could bait with words? It was liberating to some extent.

She flopped herself down against the exposed roots of the tree she had slept under to await their response, the very picture of ease whilst being anything but.

His happiness wavered, smile faltered and fell, and his arm slumped down. Daphnes shook his head and sighed. 'I was naive.' he thought, and walked forward between his Goron guests. Kneeling and putting a gentle hand on the shoulder of the child, he directed his voice and gaze towards the adult. "The child is clearly confused, your shouting will not help in this matter." The scathing words from the Zora made him wince for the child. "He will not come to harm in this sacred ground." He finished his statement gazing at all of them in turn. "No one will." And finally added with finality towards the zora's drawn weapon, the Goron's, and the hylian guest. "I hope I am understood."

Rising from the ground with a final pat to the boys shoulder, he made his way towards the base of the tree hoping they would follow. "Now sit and rest. You may think this a chance arrival but I have waited decades protecting this grove waiting for you four." He paused expecting doubt to show on their faces. "You may think me mad, but you could say the same for yourselves. You who made it through the ancient Lost Wood. Surely you know of the legends, all who enter doomed to be forever lost to the forest. Yet here you stand before me, unharmed. one by one. A free hylian man, an untainted Zora, and two surviving Gorons. All to meet here, in the one place left in all of Hyrule with sunlight shining through." He sat on the same stump he was previously on, surrounded by the saplings.

"Ganondorf can't touch this place. The Tree you see behind me is what is left of the Great Deku Tree, the spirit protector of this forest. He and the Kokori forest spirits were my family, and what you see is all that remains of them. The Great Tree is dead, having used the last of his magic to keep this grove safe. It was he who told me that I would find four souls enter this grove at once." He sighed, a small smile returning to his face. "He did not give me a when, nor did he say why, other than that it would be the last ray of hope to shine upon Hyrule." He stood and stretched at that moment with a silent yawn at his lips. "An old fable maybe, but in this realm of shadow we call our home now I choose to cling to what light there is left. My name is Daphnes travelers. Daphnes the Lost, and I pray you will join me to try and make the light left in this grove spread back out through Hyrule."

The imagery that unfolded before the masked hyrulian male was indeed an interesting one. Though to be fair, at this point Dex was somewhere between amused and annoyed. "Crazy wench." Whispered the mercenary underneath his breath as he finally gained the strength to stand up. Big words from some sword wielding nobody. Dex knew Rajaala's type. Strong minded, stubborn, and a pain in the ass for guys like Dex. It was these common qualities. That had always seemed to of caused a fatal disagreement between honor bond, and those without honor. Though, he was sure that Rajaala's opinion of him was no different then the opinions he had of her.

After all. Dex was dressed in roguish like garb, and dawned with equipment that suggested his trade fairly well. If this was indeed not a chance meeting, but the type of meeting that only the star's aligning could arrange. Then how the hell on this screwed up place did Dex get chosen? To bring light into the world? Really? Really!? Clearly this old man did now know who he was talking with. If he did, he probably choose the wrong cast of heroes. Then again maybe there was some light within Dex..or that was just extra holes made by old flesh wounds.

"Alright old man. Say we do help you save this forsaken place we call home? How are you sure it isn't just going to get us all killed?" Asked Dex as he limped over towards Daphnes. "I am sure though that the loud mouth of a sword wielder can protect us with her big scary words. Even the giant with the bad temper, and the child..that well we can use the child as a meat shield if we need to." Dex snickered as he turned towards the rather unusual band of misfits. "If this is indeed the heroes to save the day..well I can tell you this." He then pointed towards the giant.

"I am not walking behind that thing when it eats something that doesn't agree with it..." He then turned back towards the old man. "Besides that. I'll join ya old man. Not like I had anything interesting planned today." He shrugged his shoulders and waited to see what the other merry band members had to say.

"Cease your blubbering. Begone before you embarrass yourself any further. Here I thought rocks were meant to be tough."

The boy sucked in a breath and looked at the Zora in surprise. As if on command, his tears stopped and he wiped at his face, letting his gaze return to the ground. His fingers thumbed at the silky fabric around his neck as his mind went over what she had said. Was it embarrassing to cry? Maybe Zora thought it was embarrassing. Vota had never said anything like that before. She'd told him that it was okay to be upset.... but he'd also never seen her cry.

"I'm sorry," the boy squeaked "I didn't mean to be-"

Thump. Thump Thump. Thump Thump Thump. The ground shook. It's tempo increasing with each dull thud against the ground until

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?” a deep voice boomed as the world around them trembled. Despite being startled by it, Milo was too defeated to do much of anything. A soft blue circle faintly flickered around him briefly and disappeared as quickly as it came. He plopped into the grass heavily as the noise came closer. "NOT SAFE. MUST RETURN TO MOUNTAIN!” it roared. Was it talking to him? Milo had never been to a mountain. The boy managed to glance up at what was coming his way. He immediately regretted his decision. A giant monster, marked and rough like a giant mound of rocks was walking toward him with a burning rage in its eyes. Its hand tightly gripped at a massive stone hammer, cracks and stains covering its surface. Milo's heart hammered against his chest as the creature came closer and hefted its hammer, smashing it down close by.

Whatever it had said the boy could no longer understand. The world spun and his vision blurred as the Zora and Giant began shouting at each other, the words failing to register on his ears anymore. The creature turned to him and began shouting again. The boy could do nothing but stare in horror at the thing and let out an airy squeak in response. His stomach started to turn and his head spun. This place couldn't be safe. How could any of this be safe? The man had told him it was okay though. His chest started to ache at a strange feeling. The man couldn't have done it on purpose... right?

A large gentle hand rested on his shoulder, anchoring the boy and shaking him from his daze.

"He will not come to harm in this sacred ground. No one will."

The man gave his shoulder a pat before moving away. A calm hush fell over everything for just a moment as the man walked. The boy pushed back up to his feet and turned to look at the man. Without hesitation, he scampered after him, stopping a foot or two short of where he sat down amongst the saplings.

As the man told his tale, the boy couldn't help but feel like he was listening to a storybook. At home, Vota would often tell him stories about the legends of Hyrule, the gods that created the world and the hero. It never occurred to him that he'd ever see the Great Deku tree or a Kokiri. Being here now, being a part of a story, it seemed surreal. He didn't know whether to feel excitement or terror. Bringing light back into the world, making the whole world like this place... Vota would be so happy.

Milo walked up to the man and tugged at the hem of his tunic to grab his attention. After a moment's hesitation, he looked up at him, a determination in his eyes as he finally mustered the courage to speak.

"Mister Daphnes u-umm, I'm Milo," he said in a small voice "and I'd really like to help you... but when we're all done I really need your help too." his voice was clear as if he'd rehearsed this before.

"I'm looking for my mama," he released the man's clothing and pointed to the blue fabric at his chest "She's a Zora named Vota who lives in a house near a stream," The boy paused for a moment. His hand gripped at the bandana as he silently searched his mind for something else that could help, but no other distinct landmarks came to mind.

"Could you help me find her, please?"

The child feared him and nearly fainted from the sight of him. The words of the disgusting Zora ignored while his now sad eyes watched the child scamper off after the man who had been sitting there. The energy that had been within him started to fade, shrinking away like the flicker of a flame in the face of a breeze. Actions now slowing to barely a crawl, the heavy hammer was allowed to drag behind him as he turned, painstakingly slow, toward where the man had gone.

It was fortunate that his strides covered so much distance, for were he a smaller creature decades could pass before he had the time to cover any kind of ground. One lumbering huge step after another carried him to the tree.

The Tree.

It was as old as time itself, a spirit like his mountain home. The heart of the volcano that was supposed to keep them all safe. Dead now as well. The ground quaked when he plopped himself down and stared vacantly at the man who questioned his diet. Rocks always agreed with him so it made no sense to what the small man referred. What did catch his attention and perk him up a bit was the child speaking of the Zora as his mother. Anger started to kindle once more in his core, at the thought that a Zora would steal a child and raise it as their own. It went against everything they stood for as a people and disgusted him.

Yet, even as the rage started anew it also faltered for even if he were to find this Zora and bash her head in with his club, what then? The child would fear him even more and what home could he bring him to? His mountain was likely gone by now so what would he do with a child. Unless…

“I….help…too…” words slow like his actions. “Save….mountain….take…child to…..people….”

The old man's words stirred something within Rajaala's chest, an old urging. The military spirit that she had once been so proud of, that had lifted her to new heights of achievement and clarity of purpose, now dashed upon the hard stones that paved the road of history. Just for a moment it returned.

"He will not come to harm in this sacred ground. No one will. I hope I am understood."

Her reply was military and crisp.

"Yes sir, understood." She returned her blade to it's scabbard in one smooth and practiced motion. She then visibly balked at her own reaction, glancing at Daphnes, as he had named himself, with questioning horror, then at the others with disdainful arrogance, as if daring them to point it out on pain of severe maiming. She was in turmoil. Here was a chance to find purpose again, to find meaning in the armour she wore and the weapons she wielded. A chance to strike back at the enemies that had leveled her home in a true and organised way instead of the haphazard and opportunistic way she had done for the last hundred years. Meaning.

Yet it was not so easy. She would have to swallow her pride, work with a common mercenary, two Gorons, one little more than a debased animal, and an old man nearing the twilight of his life. Madness. Sheer madness. This Daphnes fellow had it right, she did think him mad. Absolutely so. And yet...

"Well, that was a lovely speech. Rehearsed it did you? Wonderful." The bite was back, strong as ever but you could tell her heart wasn't in it this time.

"If you want me, you've got me. Point me at Ganondorf and say when. He and I have some unfinished business to attend to. But he," she pointed at the Hylian named Dex,

"He stays where I can see him. And the Goron doesn't swing that club near me again. Non-negotiable terms, my friend. If you think you can meet them, I'll slay a legion for you."

First the Hylian spoke, Giving his affirmation to the quest in his own snide way. He was a cynical one but that was not unheard of in the world today Daphnes suspected. Next came the Goron, slow in his speech, but his face gave way to many emotions. An anger and fury were there, something Daphnes could empathize with, but it subsided upon viewing the little one, and then the Great Tree Daphnes had spoken of moments earlier. He too joined the quest.

The Zora came next. Something had caught her by surprise as it took her some time to reply, but her composure was soon regained, as well as her wit.

"Rehearsed?" The old man grinned. "I suppose so. I do prefer to work with a plan after all. Your demands are easily done, if we are to travel as one we must have trust after all."

Finally the little Goron boy spoke up, overcoming his fright. It seemed that Milo, as he called himself, was truly lost. His plight saddened Daphnes all the more, assuming the worst of his former protector. "This journey will be a long one young Milo. We will be traveling the land so plenty of time to search on the go. If she is out there we will find her." He would hide his thoughts for now. The Zora Vota could yet live and his fears could be unfounded. He would not pour his own worries onto those of a frightened child.

Standing up straighter than before, he dusted his gloves off and spoke to them all once more. "It is settled then. All of us have suffered under the Dark Lord's reign, but now we will finally push back. How will we do this? Do you know of the Sages of old? It was they that drew strength from the Gods and spirits to aid the hero in his quest. It is said that they all died with the hero, but no new sage has been born since. Their spirits are trapped, and I fear that they may have suffered a fate worse than death. Our first destination is the shrine within these forests, but a days walk from where you now stand. For now we rest, for I'm sure another days walk through that forest will be too much for you lot. I have food if you've the need of it, and my Goron friends, there should be fine rocks near the cliffs edge that you entered from. Rest and if you wish to get to know one another. If all goes well we will be relying on each other." With the kind smile he was getting known for, he made his way towards the edge of the clearing where hollowed out stumps lay. Many materials were removed, including logs for a fire and a fishing rod. "If any would like to join me I'll be trying to add some meat to our meal. Otherwise make yourself comfortable my friends." And with that he walked into the forest once more towards a shallow river he knew well.

Dex's approach to all of this was rather commonplace for someone in his trade. He was to remain detached from the group. Never to let his guard down, or to show any sign of weakness. After all, he was just some "common" merc who only concerned himself with coin. Though being who he was. The word "common" was vastly an understatement. Though, none of the members of this party knew that, and he was very certain on not sharing that information with them. In truth, there were other things that had been circling around in his head. One such thing was the old man. He was too kind, too wise, and even too convenient. All of this was too convenient.

What was he to do though? He was in a rough spot, and indeed need of some rest. The merc simply was in all honesty, tired. Very tired from the trials and mundane routine of his work. There were times that the thrill of the kill was one he did get an adrenaline high on. Especially when his targets put a decent fight. Though the fights always ended up the same. The target would make a fatal mistake, and Dex would capitalize on that mistake. By putting a bullet between their eyes. There were times though. When Dex was forced to draw his blades and fight hand to hand. Dex didn't mind those occasions. In fact he lived for those moments. Maybe it had been whole personal nature of it all?

He recalled such an occasion. One which brought him face to face with a known "troublemaker". A group of thieves had been discovered hiding beneath in the sewers of some Barron's city. After a very ill-advised and rather unsuccessful raid by the city guard. Dex's services had been aqquired to track down the thieves, and put an end to them. The coin was good, and the contract was pretty straight-foreword. It wasn't hard for Dex to discover the exact location of said thieves. All he had to do was ask a tavern owner nicely, in his own methods, the location of these thieves. After he had done some tracking, he had followed them back to their lair. Leaving out the messy details, he had dispatched of each member in quick succession. Only leaving their leader for last. Boy was he a fight! It took all of Dex's bullets, bombs, and even eventually gutting the damn animal to finally bring him down. Even after that, Dex had to bring proof of his success. Going to leave that part up to the imagination.

Did this make him a monster?

Yes.

Yet, being a monster.

He knows how to take them down. How they think. How they eat, sleep, and most of all.

What scares a monster... and once a monster is afraid. They are more or less. Just another throat to be slit.

The Zorra's demands were very amusing. She ordered the entire group about as if she was still in the military.

Far from it girl...far from it.

He would play along for now, and play "nice."

"Fishing you say old man!?" Inquired Dex.

Been a while since he has fished. Could be fun. He decided to follow the old man into the woods, and see what type of things swam in these streams.

Such a sad smile...

Maybe it was the thought of traveling the world without her. Maybe it was that "if", but something made Milo shiver. All the trembling and shakiness was gone, replaced with a feeling of hollowness. Milo took a few steps back as the man went to stand, cautiously gazing at his own feet as he stepped in order to make sure he didn't smash or trip over any saplings.

"Thank you," the boy quietly uttered.

As the man gave his speech, words about sages jumped out at him. He had heard of the legends of the hero and the seven sages, but he'd never heard about them being dead. What did he mean their souls were trapped? A fate worse than death? The uneasy feeling that had begun to settle on him only burrowed deeper into the pit of his stomach and he staggered even further away. He felt.... he didn't know anymore. He was excited? Terrified? Sad. His legs carried him a few more steps back until he knocked into a large solid mass of rock.

Or what felt like a rock.

He immediately sucked in a breath and his body went stiff as he realized what he'd done, his body instinctively curling up in response. As soon as he did so, the man had begun concluding his speech.

I have food if you've the need of it, he started before addressing Milo directly and my Goron friends, there should be fine rocks near the cliffs edge that you entered from. Rest and if you wish to get to know one another. If all goes well we will be relying on each other." the man added before making his way towards the edge of the light with a relaxed pace.

There was a time in Milo's life when he thought he was a Zora. When he finally became curious enough to ask why he wasn't blue and couldn't swim anything like Vota, she told him that it was because he wasn't a Zora. She'd said that when someone really needed it, little pebbles would wash up onto the shore and if you took care of them , those pebbles would grow into big Goron, strong enough to help those around them. It had made Milo feel special. But the man, Daphnes, he'd clearly said 'Goron friends'. He slowly uncurled and sat up to examine the large shadow being cast by the giant behind him. His eyes widened and his hand clung at the cloth over his chest. A strong jolt of energy ran through his body as a realization struck him. He leaned back and looked up at the 'Goron' towering over him. Was it his? It was enormous! He pushed himself up to his feet and took a few steps forward before turning to look up at it. Definitely not a pebble. He guessed searching the whole world and bringing the light back required a pretty big Goron. Still, now that the giant was sitting, almost statuesque in the grass and sunlight, expression plain and nearly blank, it didn't seem so scary anymore. Despite that, Milo still had a hard time addressing it, knowing what it was capable of.

"Hello," the boy leaned forward and waved as he squeaked out his greeting. He visibly winced as if he regretted his choice of words as he made them "Are you a Goron too?"
