I sighed into my mask, feeling my body relax as I felt my ASF-X Shinden II accelerated upward. Climbing away from the merchent base that shrunk from sight behind, I took the time to acquaint with the fighter's systems. It was a maneuverable little thing, almost too responsive for me to handle properly. It had forward swept variable wings and swiveling vertical stabilizers located on either side of a two-tier engine setup. Looking back over my left shoulder, I saw the wingtip swing down as the vertical stabilizer rotated upward.

'This is a freaking awesome aircraft.' I thought as I looked forward again as I leveled my craft out, 'I'm gonna love flying this plane.'

I caught sight of a airliner being tailed by a pair of Su-27 Flankers to my low right. They hadn't bothered it yet but I didn't like it. I looked over my weapon stores, noting with a nod that I had only two AIM-9M sidewinders and about 568 rounds for my aircraft's main gun. Not much to work with but I'd make it work.

I was a good three miles away and had the sun covering me. I had trained under a air force Major for four years but I'd never really been taught ACM(Air Combat Maneuvering). As he saw it, I was the most naturally talented yet stupid young kid who would get himself killed if the chance arose. I damn near rocked his dome when he said that to me my third year up him.

I closed my eyes, letting my instincts speak. The airliner was large, easily a 767. It had to be packed too. There was rumors that to nations had gone to war over one almost wiping out the other. However, that 767 was not my business, I needed to find a base to land. Then again, those Flankers would rip the 767 apart if that wanted to. I took a deep breath as I started tuning my radio to a base frequency the merchent gave me when I heard:

"Mayday, mayday. This is Air Savium 398, we are being tailed by rebel aircraft. Requesting immediate support. We have defecting scientists as well as their families on board. Send help immediately. Hurry, they could fire on us any moment!!!"

I was pulling into a high speed rolling dive when I opened my eyes again. 'Time to dive into the Fireworks.'

--------------------------

Welcome to this roleplay I put together. Feel free to jump in. I welcome anyone whose willing to be apart of this. You can be anyone you wish. Even someone on the 767 that is being targeted for destruction by the Flankers. Just keep in mind all characters will meet up at the same place. Anything in color is to be considered an NPC so my apologies to those who use colors to highlight their spoken words and thoughts.

Just a heads up, my reply speed will be rather slow for now. I haven't abandoned any rps at the moment but my ability to reply at the rate i was before has diminished by a great deal. I will get to the rps that need replys but it may be a bit in the meantime. Thanks.

As my leader and I swoop in on the 767 airliner something in me screams that this is wrong, I start to pull my finger up tight on the trigger to light up my motor cannons and rake the ‘liner with a deadly hail of lead but again I can’t.

My flight leader screams at me over the comm to shoot the plane and the dirty traders down, But I shut him out and bank to the right away from the airliner and accelerate away in a large circle acting like I’m begging an attack run but I’m stalling scanning the radio hopping to find the frequency that the Airliner is using.

As I line up on the airliner I finally hear:

Hurry, they could fire on us any moment!!!

And my heart sinks at the tone of the pilots voice ‘I CAN NOT DO THIS’ my brain screams and I decelerate suddenly letting my flight leader pass by as I call on the radio on our frequency “Engine malfunction!” trying to sound shaken and wobble my Su-27 like I’m losing power while I line up my motor cannon on my flight leader….my comrade and friend……’Gotta keep cool’ I think powering up slightly so John stays in my crosshairs.

I fight the panic rising inside me as even though I’m about to shoot what was once my best friend out of the air it feels better than firing on civilians, I have a few more seconds to fire ‘What do I do?’ I think.

From my position above and to the right of the Flankers, I see the trailing plane go into a wide loop and line up on the airliner. I'm about to lock one up when the trail abruptly loses airspeed and starts wobbling. From what I can tell, that Flanker is perfectly fine. Well, his threat priority just dropped significantly. Switching to my AiM-9M Sidewinders from my guns, both Flankers got as surprise of a lifetime as I blew between them at just over Mach 1.5.

"Air Savium 398, I got you covered," I said on the airliner's frequency as The lead Flanker turned onto me, "Apply max thrust, Extend and leave the air space, ASAP."

I'm coming back around in a 8G turn as the leader Flanker overshoots. Popping my airbrakes, reversed my turn almost blacking out from the hard Gs I'm pulling. Still conscious of the other Flanker, I miss the leader reversing on me but manage to roll clear of his cannon as tracers arc past my fighter as I jink and roll. I start into a climb and reverse into a spiraling dive as I slowed the airspeed where my turning rate is at its best. This dive persisted for a few moments until I decovered my fighter had thrust vectoring.

"Alright, see how you like these apples," I said as I pulled up, intending to do a loop but doing a Pugachev Cobra instead, "Whoa!! Look out!!"

As my fighter reach the point it was upside-down, I looked at the pilot in the Flanker. He was vivid with fury at his loss of the advantage. This didn't help him as when my fighter came back to being rightside-up, I I heard a solid, loud growl in my helmet as I got tone on him. It only to milliseconds for me to fire off a sidewinder. I had to admit he put up a fight trying to evade and I commend him on it but his chaff and flares didn't save him. My missile hit, hulling the Flanker in the canopy as it detonated.

"Should have quit while he was ahead." I stated as my body was swept with a cold feeling, one I didn't understand, "Shack on the target. Alright next."

I pulled into a climb as I started looking for the other Flanker.

Just as I’m about to pull the trigger on John when a plane streaks between us and thankfully John breaks off and goes after the newcomer leaving the airliner and myself to get the hell out of here.

The airliner banks to the starboard and speeds up ‘They must think I’m still a threat’ I think as I punch my speed back up a little and bank to the port trying to leave the airspace and the battle behind.

My mind is racing as I look around wondering when John or the newcomer is going to fall on my tail, I realize that I’ve committed treason by not following orders and that if I go home I’ll be ordered to do the same deeds that we were sent out to do today….that is if I’m lucky and no body shoots me first.

My stomach does flip-flops as this sinks in and without my knowing I’m decelerating again flying straight and level, I hear a distant explosion and look at my radar and see that John is no longer on it and I feel sadness but its mixed with relief. I wonder about this as I see a blip on my radar moving fast and look over my shoulder to see that plane climb higher.

“He must be looking for me” I say softly watching the radar for him or her to see me and come finish me off, for an instant I think about ejecting and heading somewhere on foot but laugh that off “I would hate that kind of hike” I add to my thoughts as I think about my options and realize that they are slim.

I keep the nose of my Flanker pointed the direction I’m facing and dive for the deck at about 500 knots, a disgraceful speed for this big powerful plane but at this point I don’t want to make to many sudden moves.

If it hadn't been for the fact I'd seen the afterburner trail as the Flanker hit the deck, I would have missed it completely. Inverting and pulling back on the stick, My fighter flipped to follow the fleeing fighter. Not wanting to waste time with searching for the fleeing pilot's radio frequency, I flipped the switch so I was broadcasting on an open frequency. Not the best idea I've had today but it wasn't the worst. My voice was dead serious when I spoke.

"I know you know I'm after you, and you know I splashed your wingman," I said with a growl, slicing to the left of a rock formation, "So unless you want get shot down for being stupid, I suggest you stop running from me as I won't fire unless you give me a reason to."

When I finished talking, I maneuvered over a ravine and dropped in on him as the path he was taking started doubling back. My remaining sidewinder locked on him almost instantly as I matched his movements from above him. I was going too fast for my remaining missile to track so I resorted to spooking him. I had perfect tone, but with the ravine he was in, there was no guarantee I'd nail him with a missile shot.

"Look, the way I see it, you can come with me and survive this, keep running and get shot down, or go back home." I said after two minutes, "The window on two of your options is closing fast so make your choice before I make it for you."

I honestly didn't want to shoot this guy down. He'd let the airliner go so he was safe in my book. I had to convince him of that but having a missile lock on him wasn't helping my case. I wasn't breaking the lock though as there was no way to know what the pilot was thinking or gonna do. I didn't trust his little zone 5 escape stunt at all.

"Drop your airspeed to match mine if you understand me," I ordered, taking the next bend wide as it gave me the best angle for a missile shot, "Don't comply by the next turn and I'm gonna fire on you."

I hear a voice cut through the silence or in actuality cut the rumble of my twin engines and I listen to it as I follow the ravine I’m in. As I start to speed up I hear the klaxon that warns of a missile lock and know he has me. I consider his words and think that my only options are go vertical and on burner and try to out fox him or comply.

We are on a straight path as I think again about the fate that awaits me when they see my flight recorder at home as we near the turn I slow down and pull even with him matching his speed still ignoring the missile warning tone.

“Don’t shoot comrade” I say on the open frequency sealing my fate back home “I’ll comply”

I turn to look at his plane and see its one that I barely know about and smile ‘Maybe going with him is not all bad’ I think to myself

"Alright, You gave me your word, now I'm giving you mine," I said, switching back to guns and taking the lead, "Switch to frequency 217.4Mhz."

I followed my own command and turned toward the mercenary base I was supposed to be at already in a modest climb. I was still tracking that airliner and it was almost out of my radar range, making it immune to enemy action for now. What confused me was its heading would take it over the Mercenary base. Suspicious now, I punched up my speed some. Just where was it going?

"At this point, consider your past life over," I said after a few minutes, positioned so the Flanker pilot would have to turn almost 90° degrees to his left to get a shot at me, "Far as I'm am concerned you just died back there."

The base was still a ways away but a automated KC-10 Extender was was coming up. I burned a lot of fuel running my afterburner so much. A check told me I didn't have enough fuel to make it. I started to climb to the KC-10's altitude with the flanker behind me. It would accept me but I would have to think about what to do about the Flanker pilot.

"What's your fuel status?" I asked spotting the tanker to my high 2 o'clock, "I got a fourth of a tank."

Reaching the Tanker, I did my best going through the mid-air refueling procedure. When I was ready for a try, ir came as a shock when I linked up with it first shot and just moments after starting. It was only three or four minutes of being hooked up to the tanker before I was disconnected and drifted back and down as I cleared the way for the Flanker pilot to refuel. I looped back around quickly so I could assist if necessary. This could get interesting real quick.

As the other pilot spoke the missile warning tone went silent and I breathe a sigh of relief.

I tune my radio to the assigned frequency as he takes the lead, I follow on his wing matching his climb.

I’m starting to wonder where he is taking me when he speaks again, I think about his words and my family back home as we continue to climb and I realize that my eyes are leaking at the thought of not seeing them for a while if ever again, then I remember that I didn’t get along with Dad that well here lately because on my political ideals and that I only joined the Airforce to appease him. I don’t miss him or my brother that much now and dry my eyes ‘Hell, if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t know the joy of flying’ I think.

The other pilot shakes me out of my thoughts and I quickly look at my gages.

“About the same, little bit less actually” I respond then think it would be nice to know who this pilot was “I’m Gunner by the way what’s your callsign?”

I go through what the manual says for mid-air refueling in my mind and try to match my movements with it. Sadly it takes me two tries to get the probe to seat in, three or four minutes later I decelerate and uncouple with KC-135 tanker and move back on the pilots wing.

"Cypher, but let's save the chit chat for later. We got bombers from your former friends moving on the base we're headed to." I said, picking up radio chatter from the base, "Looks like the Government you worked for blitzkrieged it's neighbor and the Base we are headed to is the last line of defence."

I was cursing as I noticed the 6 MiG-23MS Floggers escorting 2 TU-160 Blackjacks. I didn't have anything to take those things down. My oxygen mask was clipped into place as I got ready to engage. Not sure what to do, I couldn't rely on Gunner to engage since it was his own countymen I was about to start fighting. I hoped he have missiles for engaging BVR and would actually engage.

"Gunner, I know this is a tough decision for you," I said looking toward the Flanker pilot, trying to gauge his reaction, "I can't fight this guys alone, and you are better armed than me. I need your help on this one."

I toggled my remaining sidewinder again, sighing as I mentally prepared myself. This would be rough, that was for certain. I wasn't sure if I could handle this. My head was scattered in all directions as I breathed deeply. After my sidewinder was gone, I'd only have my main gun left and that was dangerous. It meant I was severely limited in what I could do. This was interesting the more we got close.

I came in high out of the sun. The Migs never knew I was there until my remaining sidewinder took out the starboard engines of the lead bomber. Of course, by the time they started reacting I had blown the wing of the lead escort MiG before I passed through their formation. I turned to the right hard, pulling more high Gs as I looked to see the targeted bomber of my sidewinder losing altitude despite still being airworthy. It wasn't making it home or to its target with that much damage. It be lucky to land in one piece. On second thought, scratch one piece as I witnessed the wing snap off as it started rolling.

"Gunner, If you're gonna engage, you better do it now." I called over my radio to the Flanker pilot, "Use BVR missiles if you got them."

I listen to Cypher as he speaks to me, I start to apologize for what my country did but figure that he wouldn’t buy it, hell I don’t buy it.

I check my radar and see the flight group on the edge of it and arm my Sidewinders, as I do I feel a pain in my gut and force it down. Yes this pilot shot down my friend but I had to hide my feelings about the government from everyone back home….even what was left of my family.

’So what kind of friendship was it?’ I think to myself as I bank to put a little more distance between myself and Cypher and keep coming up blank for an answer, or worse it feels like the last few years of my life was a lie.

I follow Cypher as he maneuvers us out of the sun and as I start to pull the trigger I freeze listening to the wail of the missile lock. The seconds stretch out endlessly as I think of this and I realize that for the first time in my life I truly feel free and in control…doing something because it feels right not to please someone around me.

I fire on the bomber then quickly change targets to the nearest MIG as I pop my brakes and fire on him and as I line up on the next MIG I hear the missile warning chime, I firewall the throttle and roll in to a dive to my right pulling high Gs and I see the other bomber tumbling without all of its wings. I pull up more straining against the force of the Gs and see that my bomber is missing its tail and that the MIG was a solid hit.

I relax a bit and form up beside Cypher taking stock of my weapons. As Cypher said I died back there and as best as I can see I am a new man for it.

"Whoa.... Talk about a tough crowd," I said, picking up two new bogeys as the surviving MiGs bailed, "We got twins coming in, SU-47 Berkuts, angels 19, 700 knots minimum."

I got ready for another fight as my stomach plummeted. This wasn't good at all in my opinion. There weren't supposed to be anything better than a Su-27 or a MiG-23 out here. I might be able to keep up but Gunner probably wouldn't. We'd have to think of something fast.

I started looking for the bogeys as my missile warning alarm started up. Not good, that meant they had me locked up. Okay, make that a double-lock as both were targeting me. I started a climb as I glanced at my radar. Still no visual on the targets.

"Gunner, you see anything?" I asked as I saw something flash far above us, "I'm no joy and not equiped to fight right now."

My instincts clicked in milliseconds laters as I dumped some chaff and flares while slicing into a extremely sharp dive, almost blacking out yet again as two different long range missiles converged and exploded where I had been seconds before. I had them now, one coming from the deck and another from out of the sun. I reversed my dive and strafed the one coming from the deck with my main gun as we had a merge. I'd seen smoked coming out his left engine but he was still in it. I seriously wished I had missiles now.

"What is it? Pick on the foreigner day?" I asked as I snapped into a hard left as the undamaged Su-47 overshot, "Yo Gunner, I could use a hand here."

I kicked into a skid, lining up the damaged Berkut in my crosshairs. My gun roared to life as my nose swiped across the larger jet. Fire erupted from the damaged engine as the adjacent wing was blown off. That was one down but the other had me pinned close to the ground. Suffice to say the pilot had me dead to rights regardless what I tried. My missile alert alarm started as I started a max power climb.

"Some time this century, Gunner!" I shouted, watching the Berkut as it angled up for missile shot on me.

I laugh silently to myself as Cypher jokes around, then he warns me of two bogies coming in fast.

“Berkuts?!” I question belatedly as I suddenly remember some maneuvers I watched those planes do at an air show and climb on full burner trying to line up on one of the ”Golden Eagles” as I know them to be called as he came out of the sun and hit my main cannon as it roared by in a heartbeat going the opposite direction which was where Cypher had been.

I cut my throttle and flip on my back and pull a sharp dive as I try not to black out, as my nose points to the ground I see the Berkut in front of me as he is rocketing off to my left and I bank in after him as I pull level I firewall my throttle again. I take a millisecond to look around the battle zone and see the other Su-47 smoking slightly and Cypher is gaining on him, Then at my radar ‘Good’ I think as I see the MIGs heading outbound fast ‘Or at least as fast as those old MIGs can’ my thoughts add.
As I angle for a shot of any kind I see that the Su-47 is also angling in on Cypher and they must have a lock on him from the way he’s moving around the cockpit.

"Some time this century, Gunner!" I hear on the radio and smirk as I remember that I have two Q-GRAMs strapped on my fighter and hit the switch to arm them, almost instantly my computer gets a lock on the Berkut in front of me.

“Fox three” I say as I fire the pair of missiles at almost point blank range then snap into a roll diving under the doomed fighter as I hear all hell break loose above me, afraid that I over shot and hit Cypher with the Quick Maneuver missiles I continue my roll and stare at the fireball above me.

“Cypher!!!” I cry in to my microphone hoping I didn’t just lose my second wingman of the day.

"Would you relax, I'm right here." I said as I flipped over his Flanker as a F-20 Tigershark and a F-14A Tomcat joined them, "By the way, your second missile almost hit me."

Both of the new craft flanked them, though the F-14 had hung back enough to lock on to Gunner. I had to fight myself not to engage the Tomcat as they led us to the Mercenary base. I landed first, followed by the Tigershark. Taxiing to a place outside a hanger stall and shutting my Shinden II down, I let out a sigh to calm my nerves. Talk about a first day in paradise, I'd downed a Mig, Bomber, and a Berkut all in the same day. Not a bad haul if I was honest.

I climbed out of my fighter and pulled off my helmet. Long black hair fell to my shoulders as I leaned against the ladder. My eyes watched Gunner's Flanker as it circled above. Part of me couldn't believe I let him live. The other part was glad I did as I felt he would be a valuable wingman as time went on. He did save my life up there, that was enough for me to believe in him.

"The two of you really saved us the trouble of getting those Berkuts ourselves." The pilot of the Tigershark said to me as he came over, "Can't tell you how many guy we lost to those planes."

I nodded as I stroked the side of my plane. I had the feeling I'd do just fine in it. Needed to invest in an attacker craft though, maybe a Tornado GR.1. A F-14B Bombcat didn't sound bad either. Regardless I needed a special flight crew for this one. That would be expensive out here.

I stood behind my jet as a means of marking where Gunner would park his jet.

I sigh as Cypher flips over my Flanker glad to see that they are ok.

As the new fighters approach I select my remaining Sidewinders and keep tense ready to make a move but Cypher acted like they knew the other planes and I calm down after a few minutes of flying.

Once we get over a base Cypher and the Tigershark angle to land, I circle the base with the Tomcat and take in what might be my new home…I look at my watch and see that my life had been changed forever in the matter of thirty minutes. ‘It feels like a bad dream’ I think to myself as we circle around again.

“Flanker Pilot you are clear to land”
I hear crackle over the radio ‘Finally’ I think but put on a nice voice and say “Roger that” as I began my final approach then touch down smoothly, I taxi over and park behind and to the side of the odd looking fighter and see a couple of pilots down there.

I wonder which one Cypher is as I shut down my Flanker and pop my canopy smelling fresh air of the base, which means it smelled like jet fuel, grease and burnt rubber but if you didn’t like those smells or at lease tolerate them you didn’t become a pilot.

I take off my helmet and wince at the sunlight that assaults my eyes already missing my sun visor from my helmet then I remember my shades and pull them on as I climb down from my fighter and walk over by the other pilots and give a shy smile.

“Hey” I say nervously being the swave guy I am at making good first impressions.
