Olympus

Trouble in Paradise was the best way to define what was going on. Trouble had been brewing for a while. People were becoming skeptical. They were stopping believing in the gods. And that was disturbing the balance in Olympus. Even Hades was feeling some sort of disturbance in his realm. That was why the gods were now gathered. Because something had to be done to change things around.

Zeus was sitting on his throne, as usual, and watching the other gods. He was thinking about his wife, while watching her still empty throne by his side. What was she thinking? Zeus looked to his side, watching his wife's throne once again. She had been with him for so long, and through so much, but he was never sure about what she was thinking or feeling when she was silent.

A voice pulled the god from his thoughts. "Father, I am here, as you ordered", the voice greeted, politely. Athena. He was so proud of her. His own girl, born from him and him alone. His intelligent young warrior, who held on to her virginity. As she bowed, Zeus nodded his head. "Have a seat, daughter", he replied to her words, watching as she walked to a seat and placed her shield to her side.

Another daughter walked in. This one was the complete opposite of Athena. Aphrodite. Sure, Zeus was also proud of her. She was beautiful and loving, even though she was not the smartest one of his children. "Hello, Father", she greeted, ignoring or forgetting to greet Athena as well. Without needing an order, she sat a few steps away from her sister. Athena was boring, anyway. Too straight-laced for her to like spending time with the other goddess.

Once the two goddesses were seated, silence fell in the hall again. There were still some gods to come, so they could all discuss what they could do to improve their situation and win the hearts of Men again.

The silence in the hall extended for quite a few more moments before the loud sounds of two people arguing could be heard. As the two in question got closer, the voices became louder until the doors burst open to reveal the two gods, Hephaestus, and Apollo. One, grim faced and looking as though he wanted to club the other up side the head was occupied trying to get his hands on the other god. Apollo in turn was dancing around the other, spouting varies lines of poetry and verse about him.

"At the forge, he slaves away, where maidens fear to tread..." Ducking under the arm of Hephaestus, Apollo laughed. Turned to face the angry god, he gave little heed to where he was going.

"Come now, one would think I had insulted y--" He was cut off as he tripped over the other's extended leg, sprawling on his back before Zeus.

"Oh, hey dad." Apollo said from the ground, waving up at the god.

Having had enough of Apollo's antics, Hephaestus crossed the room and found himself a spot far from Hera's throne. He noticed that only Aphrodite and Athena had come yet, strange that none others had yet arrived. Crossing his arms he directed his gaze to the floor.

"Idiot." He muttered under his breath, half hoping Apollo would hear.

Either not hearing Hephaestus' comment, or choosing to ignore it, Apollo scrambled back to his feet, a slight blush on his cheeks as he too found himself a seat next to Aphrodite.

"Aphrodite, looking feisty." He said as he neared her, winking while taking a seat next to the goddess. "Where's everyone else at?" He asked, noticing for the first time how empty the hall was.

Things were getting bad for the Olympian gods. The people weren't believing in them anymore. Every god or goddess, no matter what they ruled, could feel it. Persephone, Goddess of the Spring and the Queen of the Underworld, was surprised how few of the gods were here. There was a time that when Zeus called a meeting, all would come and quickly. Another bad sign for their way of life.

Persephone, dressed in black dress, that made her skin look even paler, bowed to Zeus. He was her father, with the goddess Demeter, the Goddess of the Harvest. Normally, she would not be here. Right now was her time with Hades, as his queen, but he had sent her to represent the Underworld in his place. With everything that was happening, even the Underworld was feeling it. The lack of faith by man was letting the some of the dead think they could return to the land of the living and Hades had to stay behind to make sure his subjects did not escape.

"I am here, Father. There was an...incident in the Underworld and Hades had to attend to it. He sends his regrets."

Persephone then moved to the side, near Athena. She scanned the small group, hoping to see her beloved mother. But she did not see Demeter and it saddened her. She spent half the year away from her mother and had a rare chance to be here during her time with Hades. She had hoped to see her mother and was also worried that Demeter was not here. It wasn't like her mother, normally her mother always attended any meeting Zeus called.

Deciding to be fashionably late, Hera finally arrived. The Goddess of Marriage and Queen of Olympus was a proud woman. She walked past the few gods that were gathered with head held high. She was not the kindest of goddesses, especially to her step-children. She took her seat next to Zeus and scoffed at how few had arrived. She muttered to her husband.

"This is a poor turn out."

Zeus sighed when he heard two voices arguing. As he knew each of his children by voice, he knew exactly who each voice belonged to. Why couldn't Apollo take things seriously every now and then? Shaking his head, Zeus nodded when Apollo, sprawled on the ground, greeted him.

"Go find yourself a seat, Apollo", Zeus replied, trying to keep his temper in check.

The two other goddesses watched the scene, Aphrodite looking amused, and Athena, shaking her head.

When Apollo sat next to her, Aphrodite flashed a big smile, making a face at looking at Hephaestus. She had no idea why she had to be stuck with him.

"And you, as usual, making a grand entrance", she joked, laughing softly before answering her brother's question. "I have no idea, to be honest. Maybe they have vanished into thin air, or abandoned Olympus", she suggested.

Athena, who had been quiet throughout all of this, only spoke up when Persephone showed up. She was fond of all of her siblings, though her preference went to the more discreet and quietest ones. "I am happy to see you", she whispered softly as Persephone found her place.

When Hera finally arrived, Athena nodded to her. "Mother", she greeted respecftully. Of course, Hera was not her mother, but she felt that she had gotten a smaller part of the goddesse's hatred, probably due to not being the fruit of yet another of her father's women. And as she didn't have a mother, she called Hera that, at least from her lips out.

As his wife sat next to him, Zeus looked at her in a way that made clear her words had not pleased him at all. "I know", he murmured through his teeth.

After a moment to collect himself, Zeus finally spoke up. If other would not come, it was on them.

"Wife and children - I have gathered you here because things are not good. I believe you have noticed it already. Humanity is losing faith. Very few, even in Greece, believe and worship us anymore. We need to secure our position, before we are too weak to keep our own existence. Does any of you have any suggestion as to how we can remedy this before it is too late?".

Athena spoke very quietly, in her usual matter-of-fact intonation.

"We can not", she stated firmly. "We can not turn back the clock, or make the sands of time go back up the hourglass. Humanity is evolving, and with this evolution, they stop trusting old beliefs, and old gods, such as we are".

After her words, Athena fell silent, waiting for someone else to say something.

Apollo could see that his father was on the verge of having his temper explode. He could never understand why he was always so angry. Sure, he was the ruler of all the gods and that likely came with a lot of stress and headaches, not to mention dealing with all of them all the time, but still, couldn't the man just chill for once in his immortal life?

He laughed at Aphrodite's comment.
"Hey, someone's gotta lighten the mood. Or at least try to." He shrugged, knowing Zeus was likely never going to except that. He caught the next thing his sister said.
"Wouldn't that be a surprise! Just one day 'poof'! Half the gods gone." He used his hands to demonstrate the disappearing act, always one for performances.

As Hera entered, Apollo's attitude shifted, knowing the goddess' opinion of her husband's children.

Hephaestus had avoided looking at her, knowing full well that she had never liked him. The feeling was somewhat mutual, though he would never admit it.

Soon after, Zeus called the few of them to order and commenting on the lack of belief the humans now had in them all. After Athena's speech the hall fell silent, waiting for someone else to say something.

"Well if times are evolving, they why don't we evolve with them?" Apollo asked. "I'm sure we could all do with a little change, a little modernizing...some more than others." He didn't say any names but he knew someone was bound to take offense to that.

"Easier for some than others." Hephaestus said from his seat on the other side of the hall from Apollo. "Blacksmithing isn't exactly a booming business anymore." It was true. Some of the gods could easily tweak themselves to fit into modern times, but others were ruling a dying craft or things humans just didn't seem to value anymore.

Persephone smiled back to Athena.

"Thank you, it is good to see you as well. Although I wish I was here for a happier meeting."

Persephone was concerned about what was going on. She knew it had to be bad for their father to call everyone here. The problems her husband was having in his realm must have spread everywhere, the young goddess thought. She and Hades had had no idea how serious it was.

Hera gave Athena a nod.

"Athena, it is good to see you."

She replied to her. Although she didn't care for her stepchildren, after all, they were proof of her husband's many infidelities, she was nicer to Athena. The Goddess of Wisdom showed the Queen of the Gods the proper respect she deserved. Gods like Apollo and Hephaestus could take some notes from Athena on the proper way of treating her. Maybe she'd like them more if they did. Well, probably not but she was Queen and deserved respect from her husband's little bastards. She didn't even acknowledge them, Aphrodite, or Persephone at all since they did not greet her.

Hera knew that Zeus did not like her comment but she didn't care. Any problems Olympus was having fell on him. He was their king and if Olympus was failing, it was due to his poor leadership. Persephone looked worried when Zeus told them that humanity was losing their faith and even more concerned when Athena said there was nothing that could be done.

Persephone sighed, she wasn't sure what to suggest. Hades would have been better suited to be here then her but he did have the dead trying to escape right now. Even with Cerberus hunting them down, it was getting harder to keep the dead all in check.

"Father, what you are saying is true. People do not even fear my husband, Hades, as much as they did before. Some of the dead think they can escape the Underworld and return to the land of the living."

Hera listened to what the children had to say and scanned the group. It disappointed her that her favorite son was not here. The son that might have solved this problem right away.

"Where is Ares? If he was here, he could have the humans warring again. After all, they worship us more then they are war."

Even Athena would know that was true. She was praised more so then Ares was in times of battle by some humans.

Athena looked at Apollo with some curiosity when her brother mentioned evolving with the times. That would surely be a wise choice, and well... Athena was all about wisdom. She wasn't sure how her father would see that, though.

"I believe you are right, Apollo", she commented quietly.

Aphrodite smiled and shrugged. "Well, I can get behind that. People will always need beauty and love in their lives", she added, looking at her own nails.

As Hera commented on Ares, Athena fell silent for a moment. She wasn't really happy with the idea of getting humans warring, even though she was a warrior on her own right. She only fought for just causes, though, and justice was often a pretty big casualty whenever there was war.

"Maybe not now, Mother", Athena commented, her voice soft and respectful. "Humanity has changed a lot. They are not like they once were".

Zeus cut his daughter off, growing more and more annoying.

"This world is degenerate and rotten, I see no reason for us to change to suit them".

Athena stood up. She rarely spoke against her father, but this time, she disagreed and felt it was important.

"There is no reason for us to stay rooted in our ways and disappear!", she protested, looking around to see if she could convince her siblings to take her side. She suspected Apollo would side with her - after all, it had been his idea -, but had no idea about the others.

Apollo cringed at Persephone's comment on the dead thinking they could return. He had never liked the idea of death, preferring the living and all things to do with life over the other. He was the god of the sun after all, and the sun wasn't often associated with death. The first thing he had thought of was zombies and ghosts wandering the streets, freaking out the living and looking for the blood they often swarmed for during sacrifices to the dead.

He listened to Hera's ideas of war. Sure during times of great battles many of the gods and goddesses had received much more worship but were the times really right for that? He beamed when Athena agreed with him. The two weren't always the best to get along, she being more for the wisdom and such, while Apollo preferred the arts and fun. This was nothing new to him though, it was what caused many of them to not get along...some worse than others.

Hephaestus had been quietly listening as the others spoke and argued, but he agreed with Athena's point of how humans ideas of war had changed, knowing first hand how these changes, specifically in weapons, had changed.

"Athena is right, humans don't fight like they once did. Ever if we were to start a war, what are the odds of them calling on us for aid when they have stopped doing so for everything else? Their ways have evolved. They don't hammer away at the forge for their weapons, or sharpen their skills on the bow anymore than they praise any of us for victory of any sort." He stated, a hint of frustration in his voice. In truth he was a little upset, not everyone could change just like that. For some it would take much more effort as times had changed, and with it, so had lifestyles, trades, and jobs.

"They've got a point." Apollo said, leaning back in his seat with his hands behind his head and his legs stretched out before him. "What's to stop they from completely annihilating each other with? I mean, have you seen the things they have now? Mind blowing! And we though giving them fire was bad!" Apollo said, chuckling.

As Persephone listened to her half siblings, she thought maybe things wouldn't be so bad for her and Hades. After all, all humans died. Some sooner then others. But, in the end, they all died. They had to had to come to the Underworld. She'd just have to convince Hades they might have to rethink their methods of controlling the dead. And humans seemed to love flowers and the spring. So she might be okay in that aspect as well. From how it sounded, they would just have to evolve their ways for a more modern world. Persephone thought that was possible and she was willing to adapt.

But then she realized, Hades wouldn't. He was pretty set in his ways and he would resist the change. Persephone knew that Hades needed to be here. This wasn't just a simple meeting that she could recap for him. It effected everything. Their whole way of life. She touched the black diamond pendant that was on the chain around her neck and called out telepathically to her husband.

~Hades, my love, I know you are busy with the state out of but you need to be here. It's important and-~

She frowned hearing her father's reaction to Athena and quickly added.

~And you need to hurry.~

Hera's eyes narrowed in anger listening to Athena. The Queen of the Gods hated when anyone disagreed with her. Although it did surprise her when Zeus actually cut Athena off. Hera was used to him agreeing with Athena and not her. Her anger grew when Hephaestus and Apollo also took Athena's side about the war idea too.

Deep down the Goddess of Marriage knew the younger gods were right. The humans did not worship them as much as they once did. Even when a marriage was performed, not everyone praised her like before. Not like in the old days. It seemed the humans were more cynical of her because of the stories of her own marriage. No matter, she refused to bow down to mortals. They should worship them or fear the wrath of the gods. There was a time that humans did. Perhaps the gods had been too kind to them. Giving them so much, allowing them to have these modern wonders. Perhaps it was time for the mortals to remember their place in the world.

Hera took a hold of Zeus' hand and said.

"Humans need to remember we created their world. They are such ungrateful little beings. We have given them so much and this how they repay us? Thinking they owe us nothing in return? Maybe we should just kill them all and start anew."

Yes, that did seem a bit extreme but it would be satisfying. Why should she have to change her ways because of peasants who would be dead after a few decades of living anyway?

Hades avoided Zeus' meetings as much as possible. He never liked visiting with the other gods. It was too bright in the over world. Plus, being there, seeing Zeus on his throne, always reminded him how he lost the game. How he drew the short end of the stick and ended up with the realm no one wanted. He was the God of the Underworld. Lord of the Dead. A feared god by the mortals. Most didn't dare speak his name. They feared Hades would hear them and bring their deaths sooner. Hades liked it that way. He liked them being afraid of him. They should all be afraid of him.

Although, lately, the humans weren't as afraid. Right now, some were trying to escape the Underworld. Return to the land of the living. That would not do. When Zeus called his meeting, Hades had sent his queen, Persephone, to represent him. He had far more important things to deal with. His subjects were trying to escape. Plus, he didn't like interacting with the others gods for the most part. He preferred to live in his realm, with Persephone and Cerberus by his side.. Besides, he thought his wife would like it. She'd probably get to see her mother. A rarity this time of year, when she was supposed to be with him.

Hades' three headed dog, Cerberus, growled. He found one of the dead who had been trying to escape. The dog had the dead man backed up into a corner. He was growling and snapping at him. Hades petted Cerberus' middle head as he approached.

"Good boy."

He told his pet and turned to the man. An angry expression was on the god's face. His eyes looked almost black.

"I gave you a decent enough afterlife, Alexios. I didn't send you to Tartarus and this is how you repay my kindness to you?!"

Alexios shrank back in fear.

"Lord Hades, I-"

"I did not give you permission to speak!"

Hades hollered at the man, striking him in the face. Cerberus enjoyed it and yipped in excitement. The creature enjoyed it when his master was cruel to the subjects. Hades grabbed Alexios' by the collar of his shirt and pulled up to his face.

"I will make an example of you. You will show all my subjects what happens when you cross me. Show them that there is no escape from my kingdom and my rule! I will-"

Before Hades could continue on with his threats, Persephone's message reached his mind. He had far more important things to do then listen to Zeus rattle on about something. He would have told her that he was too busy to come but there was something in her voice. He knew she wouldn't call him to the meeting unless it was important.

~Very well, my dear. I will come right away.~

Hades turned his attention back to Alexios.

"I will punish you later. You are lucky, my queen has called me and I always honor her wishes. Off to Tartarus with you. Until I have time to properly punish you, enjoy walking a mile back and forth on some hot coals."

"No, please-"

Alexios tried to plead but Hades waved his hand and sent the man to Tartarus. There, until Hades had time to properly punish the man, Alexios would be walking on those hot coals. He scratched his dog's heads behind the ears.

"You are such a good boy, Cerberus. I'll reward you well later."

Cerberus yipped in excitement about a reward and Hades left the Underworld to appear in Zeus' meeting hall. He arrived just in time to hear Hera, the Queen of the Olympians, suggest they just kill all the mortals and start over. His eyes were almost black as his clothing as he said.

"No. I have enough problems right now with out you adding more people to my realm."

He turned to Zeus, their king. Although Hades, being a king himself, hated to acknowledge it.

"What is truly going on, Zeus?"

Athena turned to Hephaestus and nodded to her brother. She felt bad for him, as his trade was considered outdated and useless in this modern world. Athena didn't think it this way, as she did ask him for her shield, helmet and everything else, but she knew that, apart from the old gods, nobody else really valued metalwork.

"Exactly, Apollo. They have weapons old Greeks would never even dream of. By pushing a button, they can destroy each other and Earth itself. I am not willing to even entertain the notion of another large scale war".

Hera's suggestion made Zeus narrow his eyes. He wasn't happy with that idea at all. He didn't think Athena was right either. There had to be another way to make everything work.

When Hades asked him what was truly going on, Zeus sighed.

"I thought you, of all people, would notice things are not as they once were", the god commented.

He took a look around the hall and then back to Hades. "I would like a word with you, brother". Zeus looked at his wife and the others. "Alone", he added, before completing - just in case Hera tried to argue. "That means you too, Hera".

Apollo was uncharacteristically quiet as the god of the Underworld entered. Hades always freaked him out, whether that was because of his domain, or just the man himself, he wasn't sure. He watched Hades, only pulling his attention away when Athena addressed him.

Standing, he walked over to Athena and crossed his arms loosely, leaning against her shoulder slightly.

"See sis, we can get along sometimes, and agree on something too." He laughed, ignoring what Zeus was telling Hades until he heard the god say he wanted to be alone. Looking towards the two gods, Apollo couldn't help but suppress a snicker when Hera was told explicitly to leave. Very few ever told the queen of the gods what to do and got away with it. Dropping his previous stance, and holding his hands up in the surrender position, Apollo grinned and began backing towards the doors.

"Don't need to tell me twice to get out of a meeting." He said.

Hephaestus had left without a word when Zeus had instructed them to leave, he silently agreed with Apollo for once. He didn't need to be told twice, after all, it didn't seem like they were getting anywhere anyway. Walking past Apollo, the smithing god left the hall fuming. He would have liked to go back to the forges, smother his frustrations in the pounding of the hammer, and the scalding heat, but knew that they should stick around in case they were summoned once more.

"That went well." He stated, crossing his arms across his chest and leaning his back against a stone pillar.

Persephone was glad that Hades was here. He was far better suited to discuss these things with Zeus then she was. The world was changing and the gods were failing to adapt to it. She did feel bad for Hephaestus. Unlike some of the other gods, he couldn't just adapt to how mortals were now. Metal work was becoming a lost art.

At least no one was truly considering Hera's offer to kill off all of mankind and start anew. That would have been a horrible choice. She and Hades were having enough trouble keeping the dead in his realm, they didn't need to add that many more. Persephone didn't argue when Zeus said he wanted to speak to Hades alone. She followed her half siblings out of the meeting hall.

"Sure it did."

Persephone replied to Hephaestus with a frown.

"What do you think Father will do?"

She asked the other gods. Not that they would know the answer any better then she did.

Personally, Hera did not see why they should just kill all the mortals. Their lack of faith was proving how ungrateful they were. They didn't deserve to live on the planet when they forgot to the praise the very gods that gave them so much. Of course, the Queen of the Gods did not always have the most popular of ideas. When Zeus he wanted a word alone with Hades, Hera said dismissively to the younger gods.

"Yes, you should all leave."

They didn't all need to be here, but she also didn't consider Zeus wanted her to leave as well. Until he explicitly said so. Anger flashed in her eyes.

"This is ridiculous! I am Olympus' Queen! I have ever right to know what you and your ghoulish brother say to each other!"

But she also knew she wasn't going to win the argument. She'd be wasting her breath trying to stay.

"Fine! Have it your way."

Hera stormed out of the room and walked pass the younger gods. She had no interest in speaking to any of them. Hera planned to head to her bedroom.

Hades felt Apollo's eyes on him. He gave him a dark glare in return. The God of the Sun was far too bright for Hades' tastes. The sooner he went back home, the better. Everything in this realm was too bright. He missed the darkness of the Underworld. Although he was glad that the other gods had not thought liked Hera's idea. He had enough problems keeping his current subjects under control, he didn't need to add millions more.

When Zeus addressed him, Hades replied.

"I've been a little busy trying to keep all my subjects from returning to the land of the living to notice much else."

Hades didn't worry much about other kingdoms. He had his own place to rule and that was what he focused on. Although whatever was happening in Olympus was effecting everyone and everything, including his Underworld. He nodded his head to talk to Zeus alone. He smirked that Hera was dismissed with the younger gods. The Queen let them know how much she hated that.

Once he was alone with his brother, Hades said.

"Well, then, what would you like to discuss?"

Athena shook her head when Apollo said they could get along. It wasn't that she didn't like her brother, it was mostly that she didn't like his carefree behavior too much. It didn't match her serious nature. Still, that didn't matter now. They were all in a situation that made working together more important than personal differences.

When Zeus told them to leave, Athena simply stood up, picked up her shield and bowed to her father before stepping out of the room.

Once outside, the goddess looked around at the other ones. It was clear that Hephaestus was not happy at all, and she could understand. Hera was obviously furious, and Athena decided to stay away from the queen of the gods for now.

She walked up to Hephaestus and stood next to him, mostly because he would be the least likely to want to chit chat, and waited. She was too concerned about the current situation to want to waste time talking about irrelevant matters.

When Persephone asked that question, Athena sighed and shook her head. "I wish I knew", she replied quietly. "Knowing his temper, I really fear what attitude he will choose to take".

Aphrodite was much less inclined to obey when Zeus told them to leave. The only reason why she did was that when her father told Hera to leave as well, she knew she didn't stand a chance of staying. With an impatient sigh, the goddess walked to Apollo. "What do you suppose they are talking about in there?", she asked, interested in a diversion to pass the time.

Back inside the throne room, Zeus kept silence until he was sure nobody but Hades could hear him.

Once he was sure they were alone, Zeus motioned for Hades to take a seat. He would wait for his brother to choose his seat before carrying on.

"While Hera's suggestion of killing all of humanity and starting over is completely insane, she does have a point in one thing", he started, his voice serious.

"Humanity does not fear us as they once did, and I do not see us bowing down to their level and changing our ways. I believe we must
give them some reasons to remember that we are still the gods. What do you say, brother?".

Once he had presented his case, Zeus fell silent and waited. Hopefully, Hades would see things as he did and help him solve this problem.

Hephaestus didn't say anything as Persephone answered his comment with one of her own. He didn't see how this could get much worse than it already was, unless they did in fact choose to go Hera's route and start over. But wouldn't that too just lead them back to where they were now? Humans liked change, and evolved with the times, leaving behind anything that didn't evolve with them, gods included. And if they were as reluctant to change now, what was to say that they would change than? Holding his position, Hephaestus watched as the others slowly made their way out. The god remained silent as Hera stormed past, not wanting to speak much to his mother either.

The god arched a brow when Athena came to stand next to him, but disregarded her when she simply answered Persephone's question. He was in no mood to talk, heck, he rarely was.

Apollo had ended up standing a few paces from the door, watching the others file out and take up their positions to wait as well. Bouncing on the balls of his feet, the young god let out an impatient sign and was relieved when Aphrodite approached. His grin faltered at her question.

"Well, I don't suppose it's how best to make Hades any less scary." Apollo laughed, but noticing the combined attitudes of the others he cleared his throat and tried again.

"Hopefully a game plan that won't involve a civil war between the living and the dead." He shuddered at the thought of undead soldiers, or just the dead in general. "I mean, I know we don't all get along at the bets of times, but surely some sort of agreement can be reached soon."

Persephone wondered what Zeus was discussing with Hades. She had a feeling it was very important. But that her father only trusted his brother to discuss it with. She did feel Zeus was a good king, but often times he liked to keep the other gods, younger gods, out of the loop. She supposed she should be grateful he even called them to the meeting at all. Although Hades would eventually tell her what was said. She was his queen, not his total equal, but he respected her enough to tell her certain things. Especially things that would effect their dark kingdom. He respected her far more then Zeus respected Hera.

Athena's reply did not do much to make her feel better. Emotions were running high in Olympus. Again, she wondered where her mother was. It was so unlike Demeter to miss such an important meeting. Actually, when she looked around, she realized so many of the gods were missing. Did what their father say already effected them? Did mortals no longer believing mean they would cease to exist? That was a scary thought.

She leaned against a column as she waited with her half siblings. Persephone arched an eyebrow at Apollo when he made a comment about her husband.

"He's not that bad, once you get to know him."

Persephone told Apollo. Granted their relationship hadn't started out on the best foot. Hades had kidnapped her after all and tricked her into eating part of a pomegranate. But Hades had just been lonely and...Well, once she got to know him, she realized he wasn't as awful as people said he was. Well....Not all the time. She had seen first hand how cruel he could be to the people who angered him. Although he had had never shown that cruelness to her and she had also seen how kind he could be to others, like the deceased heroes. Rewarding them with an eternity in the the Elysian Fields.

"Many of the dead would love to be living again. If they were given a chance to reenter this realm, they would run off to see loved ones or have second chances. Not fight."

She said, although she did hope Zeus was not planning a war between the living and the dead. They already had the dead trying to escape the Underworld, Persephone doubted they could truly control any dead soldiers brought into this world.

---------------------------------

Meanwhile, Hera was beyond angry at being dismissed. Yes, the younger gods should be. They should not be privy to such conversations. But she was the bloody queen! She should be Zeus' equal! She wasn't just some damn consort! But that's all he thought of her as. And that made her angry.

Bloody hell! Hera had seen Hades treat that little Persephone with more respect then Zeus treated her. And Persephone was a far lesser goddess!

Hera could not take out her rage on Zeus, but it still needed an outlet. She began to destroy things in her room. Vases could be heard being shattered and furniture could be heard being thrown against the walls. The noises echoed through out Zeus' palace. If only she could break Zeus' face, instead!

Hades watched the children of Zeus leave the room. When he did a head count, he realized many gods and goddesses were missing. His brother had fathered so many and not many had come to the meeting. Nor did their other siblings. How odd. In the past, to ignore a call from the great king of Olympus was a horrible idea. But now, it seemed like there were less of them. Things were far worse in the world then Hades had first believed.

Hades took a seat next to Zeus. In the distance, he could hear Hera's rampage of being ordered out. He chuckled at the sounds. His sister-in-law's temper was legendary. Although his amusement at Hera's anger disappeared when Zeus began to speak.

Hades eyes grew dark. The God of the Underworld would never bow down to a mere mortal. Mortals should fear him. He determined where their souls would go. There was a time people would not dare speak his name out loud for the fear he would hear them and have the Fates cut their thread of life. But while some did fear him, others didn't as much. The people were getting braver. Thinking they could even escape his rule. Like that fool Alexios attempted to do. When this meeting was over, and he and Persephone returned to their dark kingdom, Alexios' punishment would be a very public spectacle. Thinking of all the things he would do to Alexios, brought a cruel sneer to Hades' face.

But only briefly, because he had to give his attention to Zeus. He was in Zeus' realm, after all. It would be rude to not give his attention to the king of all the gods. Hades thought carefully and said.

"While Hera is often wrong, this is one the rare time she is correct. The mortals must fear us again. I have plans already to punish the souls in my Underworld for not respecting my rule. But that will only work on the ones that are already dead. It won't strike much fear into the hearts of the living. Especially since I will not allow the dead to tell the tales of my coming wrath. Do tell, little brother, how you plan to make the mortals fear us once more."

To say that the gods turn a blind eye to the change of faith in mankind was an understatement of the eon. Every god and goddess could feel the change. And for the Olympian God of War, Ares would not be surprised himself. Though he missed the bell when Zeus called forth for a meeting. There were skirmishes in these days, but not a full-on war like ones of the past. He was truly tempted to start one himself if only to get men praying once again.

Ares, adorned in his red armor with wolf fur trimmings and holding his old helmet in his right hand. Although it would befit him, he would take to the meeting seriously. And besides he should not keep his father and his mother Hera, the Goddess of Marriage and Queen of Olympus, waiting.

As he arrived, he had noticed merely a handful of the gods; Athena, Apollo, Hephaestus and Persephone. If this were a nightmare, may Zeus, with lightning at his call, smite so that he might wake. Time was when Zeus called for a meeting, everyone would stop what they were doing and fill every damn throne... Even if he was fashionably late. This was deathly serious, if nothing else. And it seems he already missed it. As he was moved to approach the waiting gods, the sounds of one of his mother's outrageous rampages ringed out well and true. What he would give to watch his mother unleash all of her aggression on men guilty of infidelity.

Now THAT sounds like a sight for the sore eyes!

Thoughts aside, his piercing crimson hues rested on his current company, "Some of the gang is here... So what have I missed?," He asked as he smirked at his earlier thought for just a short moment.

Athena didn't mind that Hephaestus didn't speak to her. She was too concerned to make light conversation, after all, so it was fine with her. For now, all the goddess wanted was to wait and hope that the conversation between her father and uncle wouldn't take much longer.

Aphrodite, unlike her sister, was very interested in talking. It would at least prevent her from getting too bored while waiting, something she really detested. After asking Apollo her question, Aphrodite waited for him to answer.

His reply made her think for a moment, and the goddess nodded. "I don't think Hades would allow that. I mean, how insane would he have to be?", she commented. After thinking for a while, Aphrodite carried on. "Do you really think starting over is possible? I mean, I guess it would be way too much work...", she continued, falling silent again so Apollo could respond.

Athena's brows raised as she started hearing the sounds of objects being broken. Hera, she was sure, was furious at having been dismissed by Zeus. Athena was relieved, though. Hera was the last person Athena would have trusted to give her father wise advice. The queen of the gods had already made her ideas clear, and Athena was relieved that Zeus had chosen not to listen to her.

Aphrodite, who was a lot less prudent and serious than her sister, couldn't resist but to make a comment. "Looks like at least one of us has started her own war", she remarked, trying hard to keep a straight face.

Zeus sighed when he heard the sounds of his wife's rage. Hera's temper was terrible, and, sometimes, Zeus wondered why he could not have a tame wife.

"She is right about mortals fearing us, but I do not believe that killing them all will do us any good in the long run". Zeus fell silent, wondering what could be done. "I confess I do feel tempted to strike them all, but I know it will be pointless. We must do something better than that. There has to be some way of putting the fear of the gods in their hearts again without ending more lives than needed".

There was no doubt in Zeus' mind that lives would have to be ended. The only question in his mind was whether through war or nature. Deciding that war would not scare them enough - at least not enough to turn back to the gods -, Zeus came to the conclusion that a natural disaster would be better for their cause.

"I believe I know what we will do", he finally spoke again. "I shall tell all of you together", he completed, gesturing towards a gong-like structure that sounded at his gesture - that was the way Zeus used to call the other gods for a meeting.
