Mallory's own squeals soon joined Blake's as she, too, was yanked out from under the bed by her ankles. Being very slight of stature, it was no problem for the burly man who had dragged them both out to dangle her upside down. She stared, terrified, at Blake's knees. Was that Margo's dress she could see behind him? What was nice Margo do-oh. Realization dawned, and anger followed. How dare she.

"You vile ****ing!" Mallory yelled, her face getting redder and redder as she started to swing around in a pointless attempt to get free. "You gross, booger eating, tricksy whore!"

"I see what you mean!" A booming laugh sounded from somewhere near Mallory's feet. "She's something! I'll take them both!"

"You will do no such thing!" Mallory screamed as she was unceremoniously dumped on the floor. "We're our own masters, right Blake?!" She scrabbled towards him, her head pounding merrily along with her knuckles, but didn't get very far as she was soon hoisted up by her arm again and marched out along with her friend towards whatever fate awaited them.

Blake lost track of everything as they were ripped away from the comforts of the palace - there was swearing and cursing, mostly from Mallory, and then there was the night air and the smell of salt that he'd nearly forgotten, for the first time in his young life.

"Mal, wha's happ'nin? Why would Margo do th-"

A heavy hand clamped down over the lower half of his face, silencing him while filling his mouth with the taste of sweat, cigarette and possibly ****. "Margo's as evil a ****ing as I know, lad, and you'll do best to start recognizing them when you see them. Might live longer. Now shut up."

He tried to talk again, but when no sound got past the callused fingers he did the only thing that came to mind. He bit down, putting as much force behind his teeth as he could, and there was a yelp as the hand was yanked away from him. He felt momentary joy at his small, but hard fought victory, until the hand came flying back too fast for him to even react.

There was a flash of bright light, and then he was opening his eyes groggily, staring up at the hulking form of a ship. He heard the waves, could hear gulls in the distance, and he realized what was happening. He twisted, trying to find Mallory, but everything was too dark and confused.

"Calm yourself, lad. You'll need to save that energy for what's to come."

Mallory cheered when Blake bit the man's hand, but was silenced mid-shout by what felt like a broom handle to her temple, and then the floor came rushing up at her.

She, too, awoke to the familiar smell of the ocean. For a moment, she thought she was back in Denyan. The mud that her nose was covered in was certainly a familiar thing, too. She blew the air out of her nostrils in an attempt to clear some of it away. To her surprise, the mud didn't go very far. It spattered on some kind of dark surface right in front of her. With a shock, she realized it wasn't night, after all, but that someone had put a sack over her head. Twisting, she found that both her hands and feet had been bound.

"Blake?" She whispered uncertainly.

"Calm yourself, lad. You'll need to save that energy for what's to come," a much too deep voice replied. As worrying as it was, she couldn't help but smile (at no one). Blake was here. She certainly wasn't the 'lad' the voice was talking about.

The world lurched, and Mallory found herself picked up like a piece of luggage, her head hanging down and sometimes bumping unpleasantly against something. As uncomfortable as it was, it also meant that the sack that had obscured her vision fell off, and she soon realized she had been slung over someone's shoulder and was bumping her nose into their back. She tried shouting, but only managed a weak croak before she was violently shaken.

"Shut up, you," whoever was carrying her growled, and Mallory decided that maybe that was the best course of action after all. As awful as the first pirate crew they shacked up with had been, these seemed even less prone to take her bullshit. She was unceremoniously dumped near the main mast, hands and feet still tied. With a groan, she let her head backwards to rest. It hurt like Hell, she felt like she had vomited at some point, and she was almost certain that the side of her head was turning purple. Even so, she still felt more anxious for Blake than herself. He just had a way of getting out of the ashes, into the fire, and then into molten lava.

Blake was dropped unceremoniously onto a hard, damp wooden surface, and when he tried to move himself so his face wasn't pressed painfully against a particularly splintery segment of deck he discovered that his hands and feet were tied. He moved his head as much as he could, just barely catching a glimpse of Mallory next to him, a slight that flooded him with relief. Whatever was happening, at least she was with him.

"What kind of haul is this? One's a girl, we already got one an' we don't need more bad luck. An' the boy looks like he could be overpowered by a ****ing' minnow."

"Yeah, Margo's been slipping, we might need a new source. But we'll see what we got in the morning, eh? Time will tell."

"Hmph. Kibbel and Rumskin, put em with the rest, already."

The words sounded oddly distant to Blake's ears, although that may have been a result of the recent blow to the head. In any case, a moment later he was seized and carried over to a hatch, which he was dropped into; he panicked, unable to grab hold of anything, but someone with rather muscular arms caught him down below with the kind of ease that suggested he weighed as much as a rag doll. It was all so confusing, even if he'd wanted to talk, to yell, or fight, he didn't know what he'd even say. It was easier just to allow himself to get swept up in it, hoping all the while that he wouldn't be separated from his friend.

A little while later he felt the ropes binding his hands and feet get roughly severed by a knife, and then he was hurled through a doorway. He heard the sound of someone else falling through behind him, and then the door slammed shut, a sound followed immediately by the metallic clink of a lock.

Wondering how many times he was going to be dropped in one night, he blinked stupidly as he pushed himself up to a seated position, noticing with a jolt that several other people were in the room with him. There were three boys, one with hair that resembled an overturned black bowl, and the other two with messy brown hair that made Blake feel uncommonly clean. There was also a girl, who was seated against the far wall in a dark corner.

"Nice of ya to drop in," said the bowl-headed boy, grinning toothily at them. The other two didn't seem to share in his high spirits, but the speaker pointed them out all the same. "That there's Gill, and the other's Dingus. They call me Shitsack," he added, grinning rather proudly as he turned his attention to the girl. "Don't know what her name is, she don't talk. Who're you?"

Mallory received the same treatment as Blake - being thrown, caught, released, and left in near-total darkness. And they weren't alone. The chatty boy, Shitsack, seemed decidedly untrustworthy. He probably thought he was so much smarter than he really was. Each and every one of the four strange kids was as filthy as Blake and Mallory had been before Margo, but they all wore clothes similar to what they themselves were wearing.

"D'you also know Margo?" Mallory asked bitterly. She did not want to be friends with these weirdos, but she also didn't want them to murder her. And she didn't trust any of them, especially not Shitsack. He was in a far too good mood. And the girl in the corner was probably a witch or a wererat or something. Mallory peered at her cautiously. The girl didn't move. Maybe she was dead. She wouldn't put it past Shitsack not to notice, and they all stank so much already that a decomposing body could easily go unnoticed.

The three boys nodded in response to her question.

"She trapsed us," Dingus said in a surprisingly squeaky voice. "Yes, she trapsed us," Gill repeated in a demented chorus. Mallory felt less and less safe with every passing moment.

"Trapped us too, didn't she, Blake?" She asked her only friend in the world. "We nearly got away," she continued, and proudly showed them her bloody knuckles. "This is from when I punched her. She never saw it coming. But that butthole," she spat at the deck, "he got us. An' he knocked us out and now we's here." She spat again to punctuate her statement, then looked up, giving Shitsack a calculating look. "We're pirates."

"Yea, we was trapped," Blake said softly, as a great wave of sadness washed over him. Margot had tricked them, after showing them the kind of kindness they'd never seen before. The woman even had emergency firewood posts around the bed! That was about as close to royalty as a person could get without the crown.

He nodded along as Mallory told them what happened, chiming in at the end as his eyes found the silent girl across the room from them once again. Something about her intrigued him. "Mal coulda taken him too, th'big one, but he caught'er by s'prise." Blake knew Mallory could've done something had she not been caught off guard, but he also knew it was only a matter of time before she got them out of this new mess. She was the only person smart enough for the job, and Blake was incredibly lucky to have her as his best friend.

"We's pirates," he agreed, watching the others with a look that mirrored Mal's, not because he didn't trust them, but because copying her was usually a safe bet. "Why's y'name Shitsack?"

The boy beamed, puffing his chest out proudly. "Cuz I can hold in a **** longer'n anyone! Ask Dingus, over there, he'll tell ya!"

"He can," the other boy squeaked, nodding along, although Shitsack himself seemed like the only person really impressed by his feat. Aside from Blake, anyway, but he followed Mallory's lead and tried to keep his expression even.

In his cabin, Captain Cousteau was scanning a map. He hadn't blinked for what felt like hours as he stared intensely at the paper, trying to take in every minute detail of it. It would be his, yes it would - the greatest treasure of all time. When the world was still young and unexplored, the seafarer Ziparro had reportedly gathered a humongous heap of gold from the natives. Whether the gold had been taken through force or reluctant sacrifice didn't concern Cousteau. He was just tired, dead ****ing tired, of being referred to as 'Cap'n Coo' simply because pirates these days were illiterate and had a crude sense of humor. He sniffed and wrinkled his large nose. What was that weird smell coming from below? He returned to his map. Once he had Ziparro's Stash, they would learn to fear Captain Coo.

Shitsack seemed to have earned his name. Mallory envied him that, even though she didn't fancy the name itself. One day, the world would know her as something other than Mallory. Mallory the Brutal. Mallory the Scary. Pirate Queen Mallory. Now, she liked the taste of that. She would have to invent something equally terrifying, but not as imposing for Blake.

A hatch opened above them, illuminating the dark, damp hold. Shitsack and Co. squeaked and ran to a corner (not the one with the dead (?) girl). Mallory sneered. Cowards. It wouldn't take long for her to establish dominance and take over the ship with Blake at her side if they were this scared of grown men many times their size and strength and who were also undoubtedly ruthless killers. Just one such man stuck his head down the open hatch.

"Come on up," he said gruffly. "Cap'n's speaking. Dunno why he wants your sorry arses up there but he does, so get moving or I'll come down there and personally throw you overboard." He grinned, a whole mouth of shiny gold teeth reflecting the light. "And you wouldn't like that one bit. Filled with sharks out here."

The filthy boys wasted no time in scampering up the ladder as soon as the pirate disappeared, leaving Mallory and Blake with the strange girl. Mallory cast a glance back at her before jerking her head toward the ladder.

"C'mon, Blake. Lessee what we're up against."

The girl behind them finally moved, getting up in silence and moving smoothly to the ladder with speed she hadn't seemed capable of moments before. Blake stared at her, and felt a strange jolt when she smiled at him. His mouth opened, but a stifled yelp emerged from it a moment later as she shouldered past him, knocking him aside as she started to ascend. He stared after her, confused, before realizing he was supposed to be going up with the others.

"Alrigh' Mal," he said, wondering what fate waited for them up above. He feared being thrown overboard, but not because of sharks. He suppressed a shudder as he remembered a certain fish not named Codie. The last thing he wanted to do was run into it again.

A short time later Blake was straightening up on the deck of the ship, noting how different it looked from before. Although, that was probably because last time he'd been recovering from having his lights knocked out. He fell into line behind the other kids, with Mallory at his side, and looked on as a man paced back and forth in front of them all. The other pirates were watching him expectantly, and it was clear he was the 'Cap'n' fellow that the other man had mentioned. Blake couldn't help but feel some awe at the sight of a real pirate captain. It was all he and Mall wanted, and this man had it in his possession.

"You little shits might be wonderin' why I called you up here," he said to the children in a loud, booming voice that somewhat offset his less than impressive height. "Well, at least for a few of ya, ya ain't gonna be swabbing decks, or dumping **** out from the chamber pots today. I got an importan' job for you, and if you do well you might just find yourselves gettin' a little prize, for your efforts. But if you don't get it done, I'll make you wish I'd feed your sorry asses to the briny deep."

The other pirates were watching them all with vaguely interested looks on their faces; whatever was going to happen next, they didn't seem to know exactly what it was. The thought made Blake feel rather nervous.

"I need three volunteers for this little task. Three brave souls, who fear nothin'. Three people who know they got what it takes to be pirate legends."

Blake thought he caught a momentary whiff of ****, and turned to see a distraught looking Shitsack taking a step back, announcing his reluctance to volunteer. Poor fella, he thought with a rush of sympathy. Needs a new name now. A moment later it dawned on him that something about the captain's offer, tempting as it sounded, had scared the others rather badly. Unsure of what to do, he looked at Mallory.

Pirate legends?

Mallory puffed out her chest and shot a look at Blake. That sure was them. That was what they were here for! What a golden opportunity. She confidently took a step forward. The only thing she feared was nothing - she was perfect for this job, and with Blake at her side, they could not fail. Her only regret was that the captain had asked for three people. Cultivating another person like she had done with Blake, to underling perfection, would be a task indeed. On the other hand, it could mean the beginning of a potential crew of her own.

She looked around, sneering at Shitsack. She knew he didn't have it in him. Or he used to, at least, she thought with a malicious grin as she poked out her tongue at him. He looked regretful and scared - and so did Dingus and Gill, she noted. They, too, had taken two safe steps backwards. That meant...

The lanky, black-haired girl had not moved at all. She stared sullenly at a gull gliding past, but as three of the boys had moved backwards, that meant that the three volunteers were now Blake, Mal, and a wererat. Mallory couldn't stop the shiver that ran down her spine in that moment. Maybe starting her own crew would have to wait a bit. She turned back to look at the captain who looked rather pleased.

That didn't make her feel very good at all.

"Looks like we got us our brave volunteers," the captain said, grinning toothily at the three of them. Blake thought he sensed some unease coming from Mallory, which was never good - if she wasn't confident, it meant they were in for something really bad. Maybe they'd have to fight some kind of monster, or swim to a sunken ship.

Or maybe we'll have to bathe, again, he thought with a thrill of horror as the blood drained from his face. Anything but that.

"An' two of you are new ones, eh? Good, good, looks like Margo sent us some chests with heart, then. Better than the cowards behind you," he said as he shot a venomous look over at the trio of boys who'd stepped back. "They'll be spending the day scrubbin' the shit-stains off the old chamber pots. By hand," he added, smiling unpleasantly at Shitsack, who looked very much like he was having trouble staying still as the powerful smell coming off him grew stronger.

The short man jerked his head at one of the crewmen, who walked forward and ushered Blake and the two girls along in the captain's wake as he walked down towards a door opposite them. Blake remembered that a pirate captain's quarters were supposed to be stern, though he didn't understand how a room could be serious. Unless it was magic? He felt nervous as he entered the space, and when the door slammed shut behind him he jumped in spite of himself.

"You, boy," the captain said as he sat down behind the carved wooden table and jerked a finger in the direction of Blake's chest, "what's your name?"

"M-m'name's Blake, sir."

"You a smart kid, Blake?"

"No sir, I's stupid, sir."

"Hmph," the captain replied, shifting his attention to the other two. "You survived this long, so that tells me you're smart enough to follow instructions. You're the only lad here, so you'll be in charge of the two girls. You're to be held responsible, got me?"

"Re…resp…respondable? I don' und-"

"Drab's tits boy, you weren' kidding. But I'll make it easier for you," he said, sitting forward and peering intently at the skinny boy in a way that only heightened his sense of alarm. "You **** up, either of these two gals **** up, it's on you. Any questions?"

Blake opened his mouth, then promptly closed it again. When it came to his current level of confusion, he didn't even know where to begin.

"Responsible? Him?! Blake ain't fit to lead an army of seagulls even if he was covered in food!"

This was outrageous. Should Blake suddenly be in charge just because he was the boy?! Mallory balled her fists, feeling ready to punch anyone who got near her, but especially that captain. He was looking at her something awful - was he amused?

Captain Cousteau straightened up, looking haughtily at the children. "Shut your trap, girl, or I'll throw you overboard and let you swim to the island." He flashed them a wide, toothy grin. Mallory was quivering with anger. The pale, lanky girl next to her shot her an unreadable glance.

"He looks capable enough," she said. Mallory started. The girl could speak! Her voice was flat, without any emotion behind it, like her dark eyes. Mallory quickly looked away from her, the anger fading. She bitterly had to admit that it was a lost battle.

Captain Cousteau beamed at them. "Fantastic! Your job is simple. We are nearin' an island. Dangerous, full of sharp rocks it is. There is something there for me. Great pirate legends to-be such as you will know when you see! And," he continued, pulling an oversized dagger from his belt, "I'll know if you take anything." He ran his finger along the blade, smiling threateningly. The display was, however, cut short when Cousteau accidentally sliced his finger open and uttered a series of swear words that made Mallory's filthy hair curl even more. She would have to remember those.

Image

"Land, ho!" Shouted the man in the crow's nest, but Mallory had no idea where the land was. She was, again, too busy puking her guts out. Her stomach had been feeling dreadfully empty as of late, but that was no excuse to not act tough. She had been avoiding the creepy girl as much as possible, but decided to at least bully Shitsack and his friends one last time before she left the ship again.

She sauntered across the deck and into the hold where she found Gill and Dingus scrubbing a chamber pot, and Shitsack looking both bored and scared. Supervising, it looked like. Mallory had done enough of that herself to know what it looked like. Usually like you were just avoiding work, but she knew the harsh reality of supervising someone like Blake. A perfect plan could turn to disaster in a flash with him.

"Well well," she said confidently, slightly green in the face and with a bit of vomit by the left corner of her mouth. Shitsack looked at her sullenly.

"You're crazier than Dingus," he said. One of the boys looked up.

"Yes, it's su... Sui... mad!" He piped up.

"Suimad!" The other, presumably Gill, squeaked. Mallory tried not to pay attention to them as they stared at her with their huge, owlish eyes.

"We're gonna be rich," she said haughtily. "Me 'n Blake. Your sorry asses will be dreaming of scrubbing our chamber pots one day!" She swayed, still feeling a little sick, and quickly left the hold again before she had time to say some really mean things to the boys. She went to the bulwark again and stood next to Blake, staring at the rocky shore ahead. The cliffs looked sharp and dangerous - the perfect place to forge a fearsome reputation.

"Ready?"

Blake nodded in silence when Mallory asked the question; he'd never felt quite like this before. Always he was able to shy back and let his best friend take control of the situation, and that was what was comfortable and familiar to him. Truth be told, he'd much rather have been dealing with shitty chamber pots than taking charge of what seemed like a dangerous mission. ****, he was right at home with. ****, he could handle.

"Boy," the captain had told him when the others left his quarters, "it's not treasure you're seekin' here. What I want are clues. Anythin' you can come up with, maps, papers, boxes… it might not make any sense to you, but we both know you're stupider than a stack of concrete blocks, so that won't be a surprise. Just bring back whatever you find."

Blake's fears had gone on a temporary hiatus as the compliment landed home - last time he'd been told he was dumber than a pile of bricks, and that had been a huge deal, but this was a whole new level. The wave of ecstasy was short-lived, though.

"And if you don't find anythin', you'll be sorry. And those lasses with you, they'll be twice as much."

The dangerous softness of the captain's voice was still ringing in Blakes ears as he walked unsteadily onto the rocky shoreline with the two girls following in his wake. Their instructions were pretty clear, but it was still both a relief and a source of alarm when the cavern crawled into view up ahead. The ship bobbed along in the water behind them, anchored in place - it wouldn't leave the spot until the kids returned. Assuming they did, anyway.

Blake gulped, and it seemed one of the others picked up on his concern.

"I know you'll lead us well, Blake," said the girl whose name he still didn't know. "I trust you completely," she added with a smile beneath her dark, glittering eyes. He smiled back, though his grin was much more nervous by comparison.

They reached the entry, and it looked like a perfectly normal cave, aside from the fact that the roof plunged down rather abruptly after the first stretch. After that it was low, low enough to mean they would have to crawl through a tight space for who knew how long.

"Well.. s'go," Blake said, trying to sound braver than he felt.

"I trust you completely."

Mallory was side-eyeing the mystery girl so hard that if she kept it up, her eyeballs might've slid from their position on her face to sit beside her ears instead. What was she trying to do? Was Blake smart enough to see through the obvious lies? Mal had the strong gut feeling that this girl had never trusted anyone but herself her entire life. She grudgingly had to admit that they were more similar than she had thought initially, if you saw past the possible witchcraft/were-rat business. But still - what was her goal? What did she want?

"D'you know anything about this?" She asked the girl even as she began nudging Blake towards the narrow gap that was the only way forward. If he wanted to be the leader so bad, he would have to be the one taking the risks. He could see how easy it was then.

The girl looked at Mallory; her eyes wide and glittering in the dim light. "No, the captain hasn't told me any more than he told you two." To Mallory's regret, she managed to weasel in the crawl space right after Blake, leaving Mallory as the last person to go.

"I just don't understand," Mallory continued loudly, as she tried to slither along the ground as fast as she could without scraping her elbows too much and at the same time avoid being too close to the girl's feet, "what he would even want here. If it isn't gold, what treasure is it then?" The scuffling sounds of the children were interspersed with noise that sounded as if it might be caused by tiny, clawed feet. Mallory could feel a sweat drop working its way down her forehead. What if it were rats? "Stuffy in here," she mumbled. "Very hot."

"All treasure isn't gold," the girl's voice sounded from up ahead. "But I'm sure our leader will know once we find whatever it is. I think he has an eye for those things."

Mallory was still thinking up a witty retort when she suddenly had a lot more space around her. She scrambled to her feet, relieved that they were finally out of the claustrophobic, probably rat infested tunnel. A great cave had opened up around them, and she couldn't hold back a gasp. It was magnificent. Somewhere above them, light was shining through a hole, illuminating the rocks. They were glowing in colors Mallory didn't even have names for.

"He can't want the entire island, can he?" She whispered, her voice echoing back at her.

Blake heard Mallory's question twice, and the second time it was fainter, echoing back from the opposite direction. He stared around, at a complete loss for words - the cave was shimmering with color, and it was without a doubt the most beautiful thing he'd seen in the longest time. He was momentarily distracted from the spectacular sight by a squeaking sound down below. He looked down and saw a large rat inching over to his foot. After a moment the rodent sniffed at his big toe, before issuing a pained squeal and bolting in the other direction. It sounded a little like it was crying.

"This place is amazing," breathed the other girl, as she stared around with wide eyes. Blake felt his attention drift away from the rat's strange behavior and return to their surroundings. The cave's beauty made it hard to focus on the task at hand — whatever that was — but he knew he needed to pull himself together. He was the leader, after all. "Alrigh', so… we's should fin'a pass'g, o'somethin'," he mumbled, staring around in search of anything that might be important.

"Great plan, Blake!" cheered the girl, and Blake felt his cheeks heat up rapidly as actual praise was heaped on him for perhaps the first time ever. He turned to look at Mallory, and found himself rapidly losing his nerve as he attempted to instruct her. "Mal, why don' y'start on th'other si…" He trailed off under her scrutiny, and then hitched a nervous grin onto his face. "Or I'll do it, y'can do what y'want," he said, before heading over to where he'd been about to send her. Mallory would probably find whatever it was they were looking for, and she wouldn't need Blake to help her do it. She was still the smartest person he'd ever met, even if the captain didn't see it.

He moved over to the wall, staring around and seeing absolutely nothing that stood out from anything else. Several minutes passed, and all he managed to do was squint around at a number of different walls that all looked exactly the same. With a snarl of frustration he seized a stone near the center of the cave, only to discover that it was covered in…

"Oh," he said, recoiling slightly from the all-too-familiar smell. "It's ****," he added sadly, and flung the rock away from him. It was old ****, nearly petrified, but it still-

The rock hit a section of wall, but didn't bounce. He stared, in disbelief, as it rippled down the wall, which he only then noticed was actually a section of cloth that was the same exact color of the rocky wall around it.

They started looking. Blake and the girl for, presumably, treasure, while Mallory spent her time searching for deep pits into which she could push the girl accidentally. She had just as much luck as the rest of them - the floor of the cavern was uneven, but not a death trap. She kicked a stone in frustration at the same time as Blake decided to throw one - and watched with wide eyes as the rock rippled with a dull flapping sound that could be heard clearly in the dead silent cave.

Nobody moved. Everybody listened. Finally, the girl took a step forward and pulled at the cloth. Mallory was right at her heels, shoving past her to get the first glimpse of the other side. She pulled her head back with an utterly confused look on her face.

"It's the same cave."

"What?" Replied the dark haired girl. "No way." She, too, peeked inside and then withdrew with an identically mystified expression.

"It's the same cave."

I told you, whore witch. "Yeah, it's weird, right?" Mallory replied innocently, drawing the curtain aside and gesturing at Blake. "Go ahead, leader." She was proud of herself, she almost kept the snark out of her voice. She quickly slipped in behind Blake and before the girl, much to her satisfaction. The battle wasn't lost just yet.

The completely identical cave opened up before them. Their heads twisted and turned, and they quickly realized that although the caves had appeared to be the exact same, there was one important distinction: they were mirror images of one another. Across from them they could see what appeared to be a tunnel like the one they had recently left. Mallory was none too keen to go back in there, but there didn't seem to be any way around it. Blake, wearing a rare, determined expression, lead the way.

This tunnel was every bit as narrow as the first one. Blake's feet smelled like something had gotten stuck in the grime between his toes and then died there. Mallory did her best not to breathe, and with her between the witch and her friend, no one talked to one another - until an odd noise reached them; a ghostly melody. Blake stopped abruptly in his tracks without warning, causing Mallory to crawl just that inch too close and she bumped her nose right into his dirty soles.

A great, heaving woosh of held breath escaped her and she thought she was going to die. The only comfort was that her coughing and strangled gasps for even the smallest bit of fresh air seemed to greatly annoy the girl behind her, who kept making tutting and shushing noises. Mallory kept the coughing up a bit longer for good measure, but soon even she was too curious about the noise that had stopped them all.

"...Gold and doubloons and a Mercedes Benz..."

Someone was singing up ahead! Mallory pulled at Blake's big toe to get him to move again. "Whoever is saying that has the treasure," she whispered loudly. "Keep going!"

Blake felt the tug, but he only moved forward again with the utmost reluctance. The cave should've been empty! The captain told him to look out for things, items, maps - nothing he said suggested they'd run into an actual person. Much less a person saying words Blake had never heard before in his life. Although to be fair he didn't know that many words, usually it was just the same ones, just repeated a lot.

He continued forward until the roof opened out and he was able to stand up. Blake took a few steps, hearing the girls rustling around behind him, before examining the room they'd discovered in.

The ceiling was so high up he couldn't see it, although trickles of light had forced their way in through small cracks, revealing that there was indeed still a world outside the caves. A small fire dotted the center of the new space, and a tunnel of sorts waited directly across from them.

Also, there was a man sitting in a chair, looking right at them.

The chair didn't look like it belonged in the cave; it was carved, looking impressive enough to have belonged in the room Blake occupied with Mallory during their time with the evil Margo, Queen of Lies. The man didn't look any more appropriate, although there was a gleam in his eyes that made Blake reasonably sure he was insane. The wild look the matted long hair and messy beard gave him didn't help the illusion either.

"Ahoy, there! Come hither, child, for I have much to show you," he said gleefully, pointing directly at Blake.

He turned, hoping the girls were also standing where the crazed seated man was pointing, but it was definitely just him. With a gulp he stepped forward, approaching slowly as he tried to think of something smart to say.

"Uh… m'name's not Codie," he said, before groaning on the inside. "I mean, I's not a'fish. But-"

"Silence, boy," the man shot, mercifully stopping him from saying more. "Come here, and I will show you the treasure you seek."

At the word 'treasure' he felt his spirits rise a bit, and then he closed the distance between the two of them as he decided a little craziness wasn't that bad if the man could actually help them. "Wh'is it?"

"Here," the bearded man said, and he gently placed something soft in Blake's hand.

"Is this… ****?"

The man threw his head back and cackled to the ceiling, laughing so hard he fell back in the chair, slamming his head against the rocky ground. Although Blake wasn't necessarily mad (**** was just a part of life), he still didn't feel too bad for the man. Until he walked around the chair and noticed the scarlet stream trickling out from beneath his dirty hair.

"Uh… cn'someone fix a broke head?"

Mallory started at the crazed laughter coming from the man, and watched with open mouth as he laughed, and laughed, and toppled over, voice cutting off mid 'haha'.

"Uh… cn'someone fix a broke head?"

Mallory shook her head in response to Blake's question and took a cautious step closer to the man. He was perfectly still, hands gripping the armrests of the chair loosely. All his golden and rotted teeth were stuck in the same maniacal grin he had sported earlier, soundlessly continuing the mad mirth. Mallory swallowed the lump in her throat as she looked at the long gray hair, in places already dyed crimson.

"Not to worryyyy!"

Mallory screamed and the man sprang up, did a backwards roly-poly and stood with hands akimbo and laughed hoarsely. Mal's heart was thumping madly away in her chest; she had fallen backwards and so had the other girl, who looked just as terrified (Mallory was relieved, she was beginning to doubt the girl even had emotions). The man's voice echoed in the cavern for far too long. To her horror, he jerked his head toward Mallory, walked briskly towards her and extended his hand.

"It's just a fleshwound," he said, smiling warmly as the blood continued to run from his temple. "Ain't so easy to slay Sharkman Frank, hahaha! Gold and dubloons and a Mercedes Benz, oh aye, oh ayeeeee..." His gnarly fingers wrapped around Mallory's wrist and he hoisted her to her feet, did a jaunty little hop, and then sauntered toward the black haired girl.

"And who have we heeere!" Chuckled Frank, and repeated the routine with her, too. Mallory sprinted across the few feet of cavern floor and slid right between Sharkman Frank and the girl, not wanting to let her get the chance to answer. It was time to reclaim her natural dominance of the group.

"We're looking for the fabled treasure!" She said breathlessly, her bun halfway off the side of her head and looking even more like a rat's nest than usual. Sharkman Frank laughed - it seemed to be his default response to everything.

"Ain't here no more, lass!" He sang, skipping over to Blake and wrapping a red-sleeved arm around his shoulders. "Spent it long ago, arr! On immortality, no less, no less! Ah, but gold and dubloons and a Mercedes Benz, not even the oceans are greater than friends..." He sang sadly, slapping Blake a few times on the chest before erupting into an enormous, sunny grin that showcased all his awful teeth. "But friends are here now, arr!"

Mallory had no idea what to do. The treasure wasn't here? What were they do to? If they came back emptyhanded, they would be killed for sure. But if they brought Sharkman Frank with them - yes, that could work. They would at least then have found something. Yes, that was a plan. Her eyes narrowed and a narrow smile touched her lips. Yes, that indeed was what they should do.

"What's a mursaydis bents?" She asked in her most naive voice, hoping that her question would be so distracting that Sharkman Frank wouldn't notice the complicated sign language she had begun doing to inform Blake of her newly hatched tactical masterpiece.

Blake stared wide-eyed at Mallory’s hands, watching as the fingers contorted wildly in a way that made him think she was having some kind of brain problem.

“Are y’alrigh’, Mal?” he asked, concerned, and the man, whose head was still bleeding profusely, turned to look at what she was doing.

“Signaling your friend, are you? What is it?” the Sharkman inquired (he didn’t look like a half-shark to Blake, but it was possible), casually brushing aside the red stream headed down to his eye from the hair above it. “Trying to get one over on old Sharkman, eh?” He didn’t seem upset, if anything he looked as merry as ever, and Blake had a sudden idea.

“Why don’ y’come with us? We ain’t got no mersaydepends, bu’we got a ship,” he suggested, and the man clapped him on the shoulder, leaving a bloody handprint where he’d slapped his shirt. The cackling laughter made it seem like he was okay with the idea, but it didn’t stop for a long time. While he waited for Frank to stop giggling, Blake looked from Mallory to the other girl, wondering just how long they would need to stand there listening before they could get an answer.

Idly, he realized he was still holding the turd, and so he threw it away before wiping his hand off on a rocky wall.

Mallory's hands stopped mid-gesture, stuck in a signal that looked half like a dying shark with a hat and half like an open-mouthed bird. Sharkman Frank gave her a look that made her think he knew exactly what she had been up to. Her hands fell to her sides as Frank proceeded to dirty Blake's already beyond disgusting shirt.

"That's such a clever idea, Blake!" Said the were-rat girl, gliding past Mallory without sparing her a glance. Sharkman Frank rubbed blood around in his beard, half of which seemed to have fallen out at some point and then stuck back on somehow. The black-haired girl stood beside Blake and shot him and Sharkman Frank a winning smile with surprisingly nice teeth. "I think the captain would be very happy to meet you! He might promote you to first mate, Blake," she continued, taking Blake's hand.

If Mallory's glares could kill, the girl and all her future reincarnations would have perished right then and there. Could Blake not see what a lying ****ing she was?

"Sure he would," Mallory said, trying to curb the sarcasm, but clearly not fooling the other girl, who, infuriatingly, smiled even wider.

"Captain Cousteau rewards people who contribute. People who just hang around in the brig and stink and give insignificant orders - not so much."

"Big words coming from someone who does just that!" Mallory spat, ignoring that she didn't actually recognize a few of them. Sharkman Frank chuckled.

"Laaaadies. Ladies. Plenty of time to fight over Frank!" He puffed out his chest. The two girls exchanged a for once not murderous look. "For now, Frank is mighty curious to meet this cap'n Coo! You lead the way, lad, arr! To gold and dubloons!" And without waiting for anyone, not even Blake, Sharkman Frank hop-skipped towards another fake cave wall and disappeared right behind it.

Mallory didn't waste time. She lunged at the were-rat girl with a snarl of several hours of petty grievances, tackled her to the floor, grabbed Blake's hand and ran after the old pirate as fast as her skinny legs could carry her.
