"That'll be ten-fifty, sir!"

Alannah smiled brightly at the man opposite her on the other side of the register, who gave her a polite smile in return as he dug out the cash needed, plus some he took his time to elaborately drop into the mason jar labeled 'tips!! (:' while maintaining eye contact with her. The girl kept smiling until the bell on the door chimed, signaling his departure. She turned to make a face her co-worker. "Yeeuugh. Creepy."

Dan mimicked her expression in agreement. "Your face will eventually get stuck like that, y'know."

"No, it won't."

"Just because it hasn't for the last two years you've worked here, doesn't mean it won't eventually."

Alannah smacked his arm. "Hey, it's not like I like not having a future."

It had been - ages, truly, since she had last done anything she considered 'moving on with life'. Her life had been a whirl until about a year and a half ago where she had broken up with her demi-god boyfriend. It had been quite the adventure, but eventually, it just hadn't worked out. She had done okay, though, all things considered. She didn't have an education beyond high school, but she had managed to hold down a job, and had also gotten involved with the maintenance of a healthy supernatural society in her area. It felt comforting to know that she did even a little good for others when she so badly wanted to do something for herself.

Sewers were never a fun place to wander, that rule applied to even those who treated water as their pet. Dimitri would have never ended up here, had it not been for the scream of a little girl near the back-roads of a pond the locals deemed "magical" in a small city in New Jersey. It had only been two days since he'd visited that pond. The only thing magical about it was how twisted it was that no one had stepped up to stop the pollution in it. Just the presence of such a filthy pool of water that was once natural had upset Dimitri.

The sewer system wasn't that much better. He took comfort knowing that this water was meant to be filthy, and that one day, it may be pure again. He glanced back at his company, two men older than him, a girl who looked like she was in her high-teens, and one little girl who surely wasn't a day passed nine years old. It was her scream that had captured Dimitri's assistance near the pond.

"Just a little bit further, and take the last right before you hit water, kid." A voice cooed from behind him. Dimitri had known Alan for just two days, he gave off a real uneasy vibe, as though he was always ready to attack anything at any time. Still, Alan had originally taken to escorting Asya, the little girl, to a safer civilization.

"I wish you'd just tell me where we're goin', already." Dimitri said with a weary sigh. His southern accent hadn't died down by even the slightest. The demigod was weary of the path he was walking. Everyone in his group had some relationship with water, but not knowing where he was going made him uneasy. He'd stayed with the group, however, to ensure Asya's safety. She was young, and very bright. Dimitri wouldn't allow her to wake up every morning and fend for herself. Wherever they let her go, Dimitri had promised himself he'd make sure they were equipped to take care of a curious child with supernatural links.

"You were the one who wanted in on this so badly. If you want to turn around, you're free to go." The man replied, his voice had always had a controlled demeanor to it, even when they'd been attacked by serpents the day prior, Alan hadn't panicked in any form. It made Dimitri somewhat nervous to imagine what experience Alan had to remain calm during a situation like that. But Alan wouldn't budge on his history, other than his title of Frogman.

Dimitri only replied with an irritable sigh. He took the turn, and he could see daylight. "I see it!" Dimitri said to the back of his party. In the dark, he could only faintly see their expressions with what dim lights they'd carried, but he could see the smiles among most of the members of his group. Using the sewers seemed to be the only safe way for their way to travel in and out of wherever they were going, it seemed like something big was going down wherever they were heading. It only made Dimitri more skeptical of allowing the young girl to stay here.

When the group finally reach the end of the tunnel, where water would normally be flowing out on a rainy day, they could see the view of a city. Everyone's expression only improved as they escaped the wretched stench of the sewers, but Dimitri's dampened. He turned back to his group. Alan, Asya, Patrice, and Hilary.

"You brought us to Boston." Dimitri declared with a worried expression on his face.

-----

Only a couple hours passed, and the group was already ready to split up, and likely keep it that way for good.

"I want her to go to the Ocean Eleven." Dimitri demanded, in a whispered argument to Alan, the man who had taken lead on their escort.

"Like hell she is, son. She's going to the Frogmen. I did not rescue her so that she could go and join up with a lot of disabled crabs!" Alan argued back, loud and proud, uncaring that the entire group could hear them.

"Look, I at least know of the Ocean Eleven. These 'Frogmen' people, I ain't never even-" Dimitri argued back, until he was cut off in the middle of speaking. The people of Boston were quite literally ignoring them as though they were the typical panhandler group.

"Listen, if I could intrude for just a moment here, my captain here wants whats best for the little girl. With the Frogmen, she's going to learn everything she ever will need to in order to survive. She should come with us." Patrice spoke with a much more soft tone than one would expect of his nature.

Dimitri had paused, second guessing himself. He'd hardly ever even seen any members of the Ocean Eleven, but their reputation was benevolent and healthy. He'd been invited to work with them once, but he couldn't bare to sign himself away. Especially if it meant having to pass that cafe every single day.

"I want to go to the Ocean Eleven." The voice of Asya declared, without any nervousness in the slightest, you'd think she had a career in child acting. Everyone's eyes narrowed, including Dimitri, and in the moment of everyone being stunned that she would interrupt the argument, she continued. "I don't want to be a frogman. I want to go to the Ocean Eleven. I want to contribute something, and learn. I know I'll have to learn how to fight. But I refuse to know how to just fight." Asya said, her tone was matter-of-fact.

Dimitri turned his head back to Alan, his expression returned to Dimitri. It was not a happy one. "You got some balls on you, insulting our cause like that."

"Hey, don't talk to her like that, she's just a little girl!" Dimitri defended Asya, he was naturally driven to protect her. From the conversations they'd had, Dimitri could tell she had traits very often lost in the world. She was the first supernatural being he'd ever met with the nerve, smarts, and relentless nature.

"You got some balls too, kid. Most people know when they're in too deep. They know when to run." Alan squared up to Dimitri, and although Dimitri wasn't feeling good about what was happening, he stood his ground. He'd made up his mind; Asya was worth putting himself in harms way. "Frogmen don't break their oaths, kid. Especially when you have me swearing on Styx that I'll make sure she's taken care of. Fine, we'll bring her to the Ocean Eleven. But you better believe that I'm going to make sure that band of door mats rewards us well for the service."

There was silence among the group for the moment, as Alan backed away from his display of dominance. Dimitri turned back to Asya. "Are you comfortable goin' further with them?" Dimitri asked her, openly, and willing to let his group hear.

"I am. If he takes me to the Ocean Eleven, he gets payed. If he keeps me, he gains nothing but someone who's a hassle to protect and feed. He'll make the right choice." Asya spoke, her calculated version of the facts. It didn't feel good to hear in Dimitri's shoes; how calculating she was about the world.

"Kid. Say your goodbyes. But hey, you've proven something today. You have nerve. Come find us near the harbor. There's a guy wearing a red peacoat by the water at noon everyday. Say 'icepick' to him and he'll show you the way. You'd make a hell of a frogman if someone taught you the right way." Alan said. He huddled his group back, leaving just Dimitri and Asya.

"Look, I only have time to tell you this once. And I'm startin' to think you know more about the world than I do. But Asya, no matter what happens, no matter how much you calculate, no matter how careful you are, no matter you think, you're goin' to get hurt. Asya, you can't avoid it. Please, I need you to remember that it's just part of livin' like one of us. You have such a bright head on those shoulder. Use it to do the right thing."

Asya's head tilted, as though she was calculating what to say. She paused for a moment. "Is that why you saved me? Because it was 'the right thing' to do?" She asked. It was the first question he had heard he ask that involved a why, as though she was trying to understand but couldn't.

Dimitri smiled, and put a hand on her shoulder. "We'll see each other again, I promise."

Watching Asya go off wasn't easy, it broke Dimitri's heart to see another person he cared for walk away, but once again, it was the best choice for her to make. The demigod's eyes clamped shut, and his fingers clung to his eyelids to wipe the tears that were coming. Everything happening reminded him of what had happened a year and a half beforehand. One glance up yanked him out of his stance, however, something had caught his eye. The shape of a man, one he'd only come to know as his true father.

-----

Dimitri chased after the shape. Though it always seemed to never be where it last was. This wasn't shocking to Dimitri, his father was a god after all. Building after building, block after block, Dimitri followed. No one else acknowledged the shape, as though only Dimitri could see it. After so many places passed, Dimitri could tell where the shadows were leading him. Dimitri could feel a weight on his chest, as he passed so many memories of Alannah. Small benches, trees, brick paths, all of them reminded him of times he had spent with her on them. The burden he could feel made him completely forget about the cold crisp in the air of Boston.

It wasn't long before Dimitri had reached where he knew his destination would be. The old cafe. Dimitri saw his father leaning on the wall, a coffee in his hand. Dimitri's expression hardened when he was his father. He blamed the god for so much that happened in his life. Dimitri didn't hesitate in his approach. "What do you want?!" Dimitri asked him outright.

"Sea salt swirl in my coffee, but sadly they don't serve such a thing here." Dimitri's father, Nereus, replied with a smug voice and a shrug. "The barista there is very kind, I'll have you know-"

"You are treadin' on ice so thin that not even a finch would risk landin' on it." Dimitri warned.

Nereus replied with hysterical laughs, only worsening Dimitri's expression. "I have another job for you. But first, go in and buy one of these horrid bitter hot beverages."

"No." Dimitri stuttered out. "That ain't a good idea. Just- what do you want me to do this time?" Dimitri asked. Defeat laced his voice. He already knew he was stuck in this.

"I insist. Go on in, and grab a coffee. Sit down afterwards, and I'll join you. And we'll talk business." Dimitri gave him a look of defiance, as the god dissolved into a puddle. Rain started coming down, though it wouldn't be nearly enough to melt the snow. The rain turned into a downpour, and fast. Dimitri knew it was a warning, but when his hand grabbed the handle, it just shook. After all of the monsters, turning this doorknob was still the scariest thing he'd faced.

-----

After what felt like an eternity, Dimitri mustered up all of his nerve and opened up the door. He'd prayed that Alannah had the day off, looking at her was not going to be easy. Surely enough, it was the two people that showing his face to was a bad plan when he walked in. Dimitri approached the counter. To Dimitri's further dismay, there was no one else in the cafe.

There she was, the first person in the world he'd ever felt true love for. She still looked just as beautiful to the demigod, even with the time having passed. He couldn't see a single difference between her now and her nearly two years ago. Looking at her, there were hundreds of things he wanted to confess to her. He felt the weight on his chest become more and more heavy, until it felt like he was Atlas, holding the weight of the world up. He couldn't bring himself to say anything about what they once had, it would just be too painful.

In one split second, he'd made eye contact with her, and his eyes darted to the ground. He'd have felt angry towards his father, if this itself wasn't so cruel in the moment. Dimitri sighed. He looked up at Daniel. He wondered what Daniel might think of him now. Though he imagined it still wasn't any good. "I need... a coffee. Black." Dimitri spoke out, in shame. He could imagine in the back of his head just how much his father was laughing at the comedy show now.

A bit of idle chit chat had filled up the time for Alannah and Dan after the one customer of that late afternoon had left. It wasn't too surprising that no one was there, really - it was a business day in the middle of March, and not at all the kind of weather that made people think 'boy I sure could go for some fresh, overpriced coffee'. They were more interested in hurrying straight home. Still, if there was just a little to do, that was infinitely better than nothing, and so the pair of them turned to the door with smiles when the bell chimed once more.

"Wel-" Her breath caught in her throat as the last person she had expected to see suddenly stood right in front of her. Dimitri looked - different. More haggard, somehow. Bigger. Whatever he had been doing in the eighteen months they had had no contact for, she was sure it hadn't involved much relaxing on a beach in Hawaii.

"What are you doing here?" She asked, swallowing her surprise and slight resentment with some difficulty. Honestly, how dare he just come waltzing back? He could at least have called! She was sure he still had her number; he was far too sentimental to do something like deleting the contact info of an ex. She knew she was, anyway.

Daniel didn't say anything, but his posture made it pretty clear what he thought of Dimitri's reappearance into the life of his (practically) sister. He folded his arms, piercing him with a glare over his glasses. "Can we help you?" He said, as if it wasn't literally their job.

Dimitri could tell he wasn't welcome in the coffee shop. It had been so long since he stepped in, but it wasn't like the place had changed much. The same old tables and equipment were in place, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it, Dimitri figured. The place was tiny, but Dimitri was once fond of the cozy atmosphere.

"It's all complicated." Dimitri replied. He wasn't sure where to begin. He wasn't eager to admit that he fought to not have to visit her. There was no running though, he had to own up to being in the little shop.

"There was a girl, who was-" Dimitri paused, he realized he couldn't very well say she was being attacked by some magical bear. It had been a long time since he interacted with people on a personal level when they weren't all supernatural. But with Daniel around, he had to compensate for the story. Unfortunately for the demigod, he wasn't the best at lying.

"She was lost, and needed help gettin' home. So, I did the right thang. No one bothered tellin' me that we were headin' here." Dimitri explained, as absolutely vaguely as he could as to not tip off anything about his demigod life. "Then I ran into dear old dad." Dimitri said, a sharp resentment in abundance made itself clear in his voice. "And he wanted to see me strugglin', so, here I am." Dimitri finished his story, mildly regretting the mention of Nereus's motives.

Alannah didn't miss the Dimitri's pause, and she had to admit, it intrigued her. He was a very honest person, so surely, it had to be important. Unfortunately for Dimitri, Daniel didn't miss the pause either.

"Oh sure, you're just walking around, helping poor girls out of the goodness of your heart. Or crashing in their apartment! Either way, get your damn coffee and get out of here. I don't want to see you again."

The venom in Dan's voice both surprised and annoyed Alannah. She turned to him, hands on her hips, her mouth hanging slightly open. "Dan, seriously? This is a café. He didn't come in the middle of the night, barging through my front door. Wow, dude."

"He's an butthole!"

"We broke up! People do that every now and then. Almost nobody's ex is literally Satan, so stop actin' like he is."

Dan made a sound of general annoyance, threw his hands up and turned on his heel to leave for the kitchen. He brought a pair of fingers up to point at his own eyes, and then flipped them around to aim at Dimitri as he slammed the door. Alannah watched the whole thing open-mouthed.

"Wow, I'm really sorry about that... Black coffee, right?" She asked him as she turned to Bess1. She finished one cup, and then another for herself. "On the house," she said, handing him the mug. It had a chip in it near the handle. She picked up her own, steam wafting gently over her tired face. It was already getting dark outside, and she had been at work for seven hours already. Good thing she could go home soon. Alannah watched Dimitri in silence over the edge of her cup as she took a sip, wondering again what had brought him here, but she wasn't going to inquire. If he had something to say, he could find the words himself.

Dimitri kept his head up, something he'd picked up was to always face your conflicts and never let them keep your head down. His expression tensed at Daniel's outburst at him, but the demigod didn't react whatsoever besides for the change in his face. Dimitri didn't speak a word, he figured this had been coming to him for a long time now. All he could do was face the pair in front of him. What surprised him was Alannah defending him. But the demigod didn't react, he stood there throughout the entire outburst, only giving the occasional nod.

"Don't go apologizin' on Daniel's behalf." Dimitri said, when Alannah and him were alone. "He's just tryin' to do right by you, y'know? I'm not angry at him or anythin', I'm just glad to know you still have people lookin' out for ya." Dimitri said, picking up his mug of coffee. It was surreal to the demigod, seeing Alannah after so much time had passed, yet it was just like yesterday that they had broken up. Dimitri hated the way the father of time worked.

There was a long pause, Dimitri just looked at the girl behind the counter. It was still so different to the demigod, knowing her as only a friend. "Look, Alannah, I know I haven't made an effort to talk to ya or make contact or anythin'. I'm sorry for that." Dimitri said, and while he had a feeling that an apology wouldn't make up for a year and a half, he still needed to say what he had to say to be able to sleep. "It's just real hard, y'know? I've never'ad to talk to you like you were just a friend, and it's just hard to find words sometimes. I thought 'bout writin' to you or callin', but, I just wouldn't know what to say." Dimitri confessed. "How does 'hello' sound?"

The familiar Southern accent jabbed at her like needles of nostalgia for the people they used to be. If she was honest, she didn't think she had changed much. Still same dead-end job. Still no idea what she wanted to do with herself. Although, she had finally admitted to her parents that she had dropped out of college, so she supposed that counted as change. It just wasn't a very good kind.

"Dan is pretty overprotective of me," she said, blowing on her coffee. "Butcha right. It is nice to have someone look out for ya." Like Dimitri had once. But that was a long time ago now. His problem was that he liked looking out for everyone, and always had to go rescue them. That, and an butthole dad who used him as his errand boy. Alannah had never met Nereus1, but from what Dimitri had told her, he didn't sound like he was a very fun or even tolerable person.

Being so close to Dimitri again felt surreal. And they weren't even close, what with a counter blocking the space between them. "Don't be sorry," she said, admiring his brown eyes with a familiarity she wasn't sure she was allowed. But ****, it felt so nice to have him back, even if she, like always, had no idea how long it would last for. A small laugh escaped her lips.

"Hello sounds nice," she replied, smiling gently. "But I'm sure ya didn't come here just to tell me hi."

1Little does she know!

"It is." Dimitri replied, a bittersweet smile having formed on his lips at the mention of having someone looking out for you. In truth, Dimitri didn't have anyone looking out for him, it was a burden he had to carry if he was going to continue running godly errands for his father. His adopted parents would always be there for him, but he rarely ever went to visit them now. He could feel strain between him and them each time he went to visit them. They would always ask why he didn't take time to do what he wanted instead. Everyone felt as though he was doing far too much for Nereus. Nobody understood that he didn't have the option to say no.

"No, you're right, I didn't really come to say hi." Dimitri confessed, though being honest was the easiest thing for him to do. "There's a million things I wanna ask you. I guess there ain't never been a time where I haven't'ad a million things to ask, huh?" Dimitri remembered the night he'd met her as a mermaid as though it had just happened. Catching the sight of her in the water, they clicked virtually instantly. And all it took was one question: "Can you kiss someone underwater?" After that, the rest was history.

"There really was a girl. I didn't wanna say anythin' in front of Daniel, but she's gifted, Alannah. Gifted like us. There's no home for her to go to though, I left her with other people. She's gonna be alright." Dimitri knew Alannah wouldn't like the idea of the Frogmen, he himself wasn't too fond of their methods and ideas. "So, about those million questions... how are your parents? And how is Bessy doin'? How are you doin' overall, these days? I know snow ain't the best news for ya, with havin' to be in water so often. And, if you aren't busy after work, maybe-" Dimitri was interrupted by the sound of a toiler flushing in the bathroom, only it sounded much more violent. Dimitri's head tilted, and the bathroom door opened swiftly. It was exactly who Dimitri guessed it would be.

"Well, that was fun. A lot less fun than I was hoping for, but hey, what are you going to do? Some children are just that dull." Nereus said, having walked out of the bathroom. Dimitri guessed that Alannah would be aware no one walked in and somehow someone came from the bathroom. Dimitri's fists clenched so tight that he was surprised the mug in his hands didn't shatter. He hated the godly blood in his veins to begin with. Making him related to this being only made it worse.

A gifted girl? Alannah wondered what that could mean. As far as she was concerned she wasn't exactly gifted. Just a different species than human, a really weird species, sure, but a different species none the less. Was she like Dimitri, then, with something from both worlds? Or even more alien than Alannah; a naiad, perhaps? She drained the last of her coffee thoughtfully from her cup. Whatever it was, she had to know more. The mystery girl had needed help, and she needed help from the supernatural community. Why she had been brought all the way to Boston was strange in itself, but she knew Dimitri had had a good reason. As sad as it was to admit to herself, he hadn't come for her.

"Ya've always been a curious one. Betty's gettin' older 'n older," she said in response to his inquiry about the family dog. "And yeah, it's a bit chilly, but hey, it's either risking to freeze to death, or dry out to death for sure. I know what I prefer." She shrugged, set her cup aside, and then rested her elbows on the countertop as she leant forward, speaking in a slightly hushed voice even though she wasn't sure why. She could hear cleaning-noises from the kitchen mixed with Dan's voice. He was singing Lady GaGa songs again. Alannah was determined to ignore Dimitri's half suggestion of hanging out later, but she never had the opportunity to form a reply.

She leaned a bit to the side to see past Dimitri. Her eyes widened and her right eyebrows shot upwards. It was that unsettling man from earlier. The unsettling man who had left, and who most certainly had not come inside again. Not through the door, anyway. She stood to her full height again and crossed her arms. It was impossible to miss Dimitri's reaction to him, and she had half an idea of who the man could be. Still, she wanted to make sure.

"Ya didn't come through the door. I bettah not find a broken window back there," she told him in an irritated tone. If he was who she thought he was, she was fairly certain she wouldn't have to clean up broken glass. She hoped she was wrong. The alternative of dealing with a god rather than a person was just so much worse.

"What about two broken windows?" Nereus asked. The image of the god was much more flattering than usual, Dimitri had noticed. Usually depicted as an old man at the sea, Nereus now looked middle-aged at the oldest. It angered the demigod that his latest memory of the coffee shop would be of Nereus. Lately more and more places that were once sacred to him had been invaded by his father, including home.

"Just, stop." Dimitri said, in a tone that was reminiscent of someone getting tired of a younger sibling acting immature in public. "None've your windows're broke, I promise." Dimitri gave his word to Alannah, something he never took lightly. He hadn't heard glass breaking, and he knew his father just wanted to stir emotions. "Alannah, this is-" Dimitri paused to sigh, his shoulders now sluggishly slumped, he looked back at the god who had a coy grin on his face. Dimitri knew the god was just doing this to get a rise out of him, for entertainment. "This is Nereus." Dimitri held his tongue back, having a remark in his mind ready for Nereus having the sea taken from him. "We should really get goin'. There's a lotta work to get-" Dimitri couldn't finish his thought, before his father interupted him.

"Now, that is just utter nonsense. Come now, boy, you never let me meet her before." Nereus said in a mocking tone. Nereus placed his hand over the counter, to shake Alannah's.

Oh, boy. Alannah's expression tightened as her suspicions and worries were confirmed. Already, everything about Nereus irritated her, right from his mocking demeanor to his coal black hair so like Dimitri's. She extended her own hand tentatively, quickly shaking his before retracting it as fast as she could without seeming too impolite. She had the feeling that this man - god, rather - was not someone to be trusted, if Dimitri's eagerness to get away was any indication.

"Now we've met," she stated flatly, looking him directly in the eye. "And now, it just so happens that this coffee shop is closin' for the dee. Ya should get going." Even if the thought of being alone with Dimitri made her vaguely uncomfortable, having Nereus around was a hundred times worse. And she still had Dan to help her avoid awkward escapes from her ex. She'd be fine.

Nereus shook Alannah's hand, with a smug and mocking expression on his face. "Well, it wasn't a very good meeting." Nereus said, with a bored shrug. Even after she'd expressed the shop was closing up, his expression remained that of a spoiled billionaire. "Well, isn't that just the biggest shame?" Nereus asked Dimitri, his voice rang of condescending nature. "And after you came all this way, too. But, you know what they say about the kiddies: they're just so naive." Nereus expressed.

"That ain't fair, you-" Dimitri had gotten upset enough to argue back, even though he knew it was the worst possible thing to do when it came to his father. His argument, as always, was cut off.

Nereus had raised two fingers, and a brow, while his lips formed into a smirk. The coffee in Dimitri's hands, still untouched, flew upwards out of the cup. The hot coffee blasted the demigod in the face like a water balloon, though none of it hit the floor, it had all coated onto Dimitri's head and chest. Dimitri's expression darkened as he looked to his father, who was now visibly laughing at his own display of a parlor trick.

In the moment, Dimitri froze in a mix of humiliation, anger, and defeat. Dimitri knew the smart thing to do was to give up and walk out of the coffee shop. Nereus would follow, and that would be the end of it. But in the moment, Dimitri couldn't bring himself to be the bigger person. He stepped up to Nereus, who now looked amused by his son's stand. Dimitri gripped the coffee with his powers, although it felt very awkward and tainted, he could still feel control over it.

And then the door from the kitchen opened, and Dimitri let his grip go. Now, along with the humiliation, there was another problem: Daniel.

Still steaming coffee flew from its mug and hit Dimitri straight in the face. Alannah shouted, a wordless sound of shock, anger, and fear; without thought, she extended her own hand in an attempt to stop the coffee before it hit him. It didn't matter, she soon saw, as the hot liquid never got to touch him - it simply coated him without leaving a stain. Her hand dropped again, and she stared at Nereus. What a goddamn child.

"We. Are. Closed." She snarled at him, fixing him with an icy glare that was only amplified by her intense, blue eyes. This man had to leave and stay away. Her anger was short-lived and soon replaced by a nagging worry as she heard the kitchen door click open behind her.

"Alannah, what the Hell?" Dan didn't even sound particularly surprised - just really tired, like he had caught her doing something she knew she shouldn't have for the tenth time. He had no doubt been attracted by her shout earlier. How much had he seen? Dimitri was still holding a blob of coffee suspended in midair, she realized. Frozen, she turned around to face Daniel. How convincing would 'nothing' sound?

"It wasn't me?" she said uncertainly. That was literally the only worse option. Good job. Her mouth felt very dry all of a sudden, as she took a few steps to the left in an attempt to cover Dimitri and the mysteriously hovering coffee. Daniel appeared to be very focused on her, so maybe he hadn't seen. She crossed her fingers behind her back.

"You shouted," he said, frowning. "What's going on? Are you okay? And why are either of them still here?"

"They were just leaving," Alannah replied, glad to have a diversion. She turned back to face Dimitri, a pleading look in her eyes. "Right?"

The only thing Dimitri could think to do was to put the coffee back on himself. The demigod nearly flinched at the heat of the coffee, once again making contact with his skin. The only solace he found from being live entertainment for his father and the scorching heat of freshly made coffee was the release of the grip of the tainted water. Dimitri had become quite talented with hydrokenesis, but his will was intensely insecure with water that wasn't pure.

By the time Dimitri was feeling relief from the initial burning of coffee, he could hear his father chuckling, and the promise Alannah had made to Daniel. "They were just leaving." Dimitri might have been hurt somewhat, had the physical pain of coffee on him and the panic of getting his father out of here not existed.

"Yeah, we are." Dimitri promised to Alannah. There was resentment in his voice, though it was all aimed at Nereus. The god was still chuckling at the entirety of the situation. Dimitri was enraged, an emotion so unknown to him. His father had brought him here to cause problems with someone he cared for, even after all of the daunting work Dimitri had completed for him. In a split second decision of anger, Dimitri went to grab Nereus's chest by the fabric of his shirt.

In a fraction of a second, Nereus darted back, as though he had darted from being grabbed a million times in the past. His expression, however, was no longer amused in the slightest. Anger filled the eyes of Nereus, something Dimitri hadn't ever seen. Dimitri suddenly felt regret at his actions.

Nereus let out a vulgar curse in English, then several more in an ancient Greek language. He grabbed Dimitri by his collar, and Dimitri still had no reluctance to fight back. "Follow me now, for your own best interests." Nereus threatened in a growl at Dimitri. The demigod still wasn't afraid, but a glance at Alannah and Daniel reminded Dimitri that he had no choice. He had to obey.

Nereus dragged Dimitri out of the coffee shop by his throat. The second they were on the streets of Boston, Dimitri was thrown to the cement. The calm side of Dimitri couldn't shake something though. Something wasn't right about the whole situation. Nereus was a god, who'd been aiming to get a rise out of Dimitri.

Why had he stopped being amused when Dimitri tried to grab him?

-----A Few Days Later-----

Dimitri still felt sore from the beating he'd gotten. There were no more physical marks on his face, save for some small scratches. The demigod had spent the majority of the night listening to everything he heard, trying to carefully decipher any of the Greek that he could. Something was out of place, but Dimitri had decided he was going to take his time. Pressing the god would have made him close up on whatever it was Dimitri was looking for.

"You screw this up? You're going to feel what regret is really like." Dimitri frowned at the memory. There was many things Dimitri wanted to reply with, but he'd kept his mouth shut. The sight of Boston Harbor was enough to lift his spirits, if only slightly. Of course, getting in the water without attention was impossible. That was, unless you were on a boat, out in the water. Luckily for Dimitri, he had a new friend.

Dimitri wasn't fond of boats that ran on motors, which is why seeing so many sails was comforting. A bond between man and sea, if there was any. As a being, Dimitri was part man and part sea, it was one of the hardest things to accept. Seeing mankind have the consideration to respect the ocean was something special to the demigod.

"Alright kid, we're a safe 'nuff distance from the harbor. Be careful down there, amphibian." Alan said, the same Frogman he'd met days prior.

"Yeah, thanks." Dimitri replied. Dimitri didn't have anything in particular he wanted to share with the man, other than his thankfulness for the boat ride.

"Just remember to report back as to what you find. These are strange, dangerous times. You're lucky to still be welcomed down there." Alan said, almost somewhat forcefully.

With a simple nod, Dimitri plunged down into the water. He could always resurface near a beach later that night. For now, his primary focus was to go down, until he found whatever he was looking for. Apparently, he'd be able to feel it when he was getting close.

She had never seen Dimitri angry. Other negative emotions, like loss and hopelessness and desperation, sure, but never anger. The contrast was jarring, as if a mountain had suddenly and inexplicably split in half. She made half a movement towards them with the futile intention to stop whatever was going on, but Dan's cold fingers wrapping around her wrist stopped her. Even if she knew that trying to prevent any kind of fight was the right thing to do, Dan was right - it definitely wasn't the smart thing to do.

Alannah's free hand flew up to her mouth as Nereus threw his son into the filthy slush that had been originally been snow. Dan stared, just as transfixed. "What an butthole," he mumbled. Alannah felt his breath wash over her hair as he rested his chin on the top of her head. It was comforting to know that even with everything that had happened, she still had her surrogate brother. Today had come a little too close, and she did not want him to find out about her 'anomalies'. She couldn't deal with another Lucy.

"Yeah," she replied.
Image

More than anything, Alannah hated her dependence on a weekly bath. It had created the need for her to work overtime practically any other day of the week so as to make up for her total absence on Fridays. Her manager was okay with that, because she was a nice and understanding person. Alannah was not okay with that, because her free time could never be spent reading, or watching something on Netflix, or hanging out with Dan. No, the sea demanded all her attention and threatened to kill her if she didn't obey, like some sort of insane, spoiled cartoon villain.

Wish I had a tub, she thought as she kicked a rock with her bare feet and immediately regretted it. She yelped, staring at the innocent gray stone as if it had deliberately gotten in her way, even though she knew it was the ocean that had washed it up who knew how long ago. The ****ing' ocean. Always comes back to you, doesn't it? What, you think you're special? Just because you cover 70% of the Earth's surface? Get over yourself. Her bitter thoughts kept her company as she walked as quickly as she could over the treacherous rocky beach. A shrill shriek escaped her as her bare feet made contact with the cold water, and, like she always did during the winter, she was almost certain that she was going to freeze to death.

The feeling never lasted long, though. As soon as her head dipped under, she felt the transformation begin. Her legs snapped together. Her feet grew long and flat, turning into her caudal fin instead. Gills cut themselves open on the side of her throat, and the water was just pleasantly cool, not icy anymore. Even if she ****ing about it sometimes, she had to admit to herself that she never got over the feeling of being turned into a shark. It was just fun.

She swam further out, aimlessly searching for nothing. It was dark already and would be dark for a long time, so there would be no sunrise to see. Even watching the ships would be boring, because no human in their right mind would go out tonight without a purpose. The wind bit and the waves were choppy, not that Alannah felt much of it under the surface. A fish swam carelessly past her, and she snatched it before it could react. She clamped her teeth down and bit, spitting out the worst of the scales before continuing with her dinner. Being a mermaid was weird, and she hoped she never had to see a doctor. She could only imagine the mystification her body would cause if examined.

Deeper and deeper she went. It got colder and darker with every foot, which wasn't unusual, but there was something else, too. She couldn't hear it, and she couldn't feel it, but she knew it was there: the agonized moan of something so large it should not exist. It made her uneasy to be in the water by herself, something she had never experienced before. Not for the first time, she wished she had someone's hand to hold.

The second Dimitri's body hit the water of Boston Harbor, he could tell something wasn't right. The water somehow felt less dense than usual. He knew he had to be careful along the shoreline, where there could be more people, but in the moment he'd become distracted by the new sensation. He couldn't describe the pull within him, in face, the only way he could describe it was as unknown. This is what he was looking for.

-----

"What you're looking for is something ancient. Something powerful. Something that threatens the ocean, as you and I know it." Nereus had said, and it was as though Dimitri had seen a serious side of his father that he hadn't before. "This is why your kind is pushed so hard. As champions, you need to be strong. You're ready for this now. You're going to have to kill what's down there." At that moment, Dimitri felt a great deal of uncertainty. Was it really possible that all of the awful treatment was to have Dimitri ready for something like this? Even still, the word "kill" stung Dimitri to think about. He'd killed monsters before, but that was self defense. He'd never taken initiative out to hunt a sentient being. Even when he'd been sent to play fetch for Nereus in the past, he'd always found a way to do his job without killing anyone.

The thought of that changing made Dimitri feel dark.

"This thing, it soun's real strong." Dimitri searched for the words to use, hoping he'd grown clever enough to avoid further confrontation. He was still bleeding from his lip, and could feel the marks on his face. "Why me? Why us?" Dimitri asked, in reference to other demigods that were held on leashes to their parents. "Y'all're more powerful than us. Ain't it more smart to just go'nd find it yourselves?"

A look of frustration crossed Nereus's face. It became clear to Dimitri, and fast, that what he was asking was not a common question. Nereus became aggressive once more. "Listen, boy, I'm only going to tell you this once. So listen here, and listen good!"

-----

Dimitri regained his composure. He was here to find whatever was here, causing this sensation. He could almost feel it pulling to him, and it seemed as though the only way to it was to go deeper underwater. Dimitri obeyed the feeling, and dwelled deeper underwater. What was once his own biome now felt like foreign territory. The once welcoming calm of the ocean now felt like an unstable world.

His once carefree roaming became cautious. A frown formed on his face, a very rare occasion when he's in the water. He couldn't stop thinking about why this was his job to carry out. Whatever this thing was, Dimitri had never been more cautious of anything before it. Not even his father.

Dimitri passed lots of wildlife, even a shark. All was relatively normal for the wildlife of the sea, it was almost like whatever was going wasn't effecting them. It made Dimitri breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that things weren't going to blow out of proportions while he worked on this assignment.

"Hey...mornin'." Dimitri said to a shark. It was one of his newest techniques he'd learned, something that happened more often than he was comfortable with. Dimitri still wasn't comfortable speaking direct English to aquatic life.

The shark stopped dead in its tracks and turned around to face Dimitri. Sharks didn't have the organs to make any sound; a great tool for being fierce predator. All the shark did in return was move its fins in a slow and calm manner.

"I understand you're busy, bein' a shark and all." Dimitri replied, though he couldn't imagine the shark's schedule was actually that crowded. "This is important though. Has anything... noticeable, happened in the last coupl'a'weeks?" Dimitri asked, struggling to find a good way to ask about what he was looking for.

The shark's expression dulled, and his fins moved in a similar manner as the time before. Dimitri, as little as he could justify it, was able to still make sense of the fin movements. Communicating with sea animals had been very surreal to Dimitri, and not in a joyous way.

"I see. I feel it too. Does it make you feel... cautious?" Dimitri asked, even now he could still feel the pull, but it was much stronger than when he'd first entered the water. Whatever was here was something very powerful. Not even the peculiar nature of talking to a shark made him forget about the pull.

The shark replied with a bunch of rapid fin movements, and an angry express. Dimitri, not taking the time to consider a concussion on himself, translated to himself again. The shark turned away and began to swim.

"I get it, you like it, you don't gotta be rude about it!"Dimitri called after the shark.

A shark sped past her, but it wasn't hunting - that much she knew. It just didn't smell that way. Alannah grinned toothily and followed, racing with her 'cousin' to nowhere. Maybe it had also felt the weird pull from the depths and gotten scared.

"Slow down!" She laughed, a large stream of bubbles erupting from her mouth. To her surprise, the shark did as she asked. She swam around to face it, her own blue eyes seeking its large black ones. There was so much more intelligence there to be found than people understood, and it made her sad. The shark seemed upset, too, for some reason. Maybe she was scaring it. Even if it had seen her before, they didn't have the best memories from what she knew.

"Look, I'm the same," she said, doing a quick round to show off her tail. She brushed her long hair away from her gills. "Just like you," she continued, her smile faltering. "Just like you..." Lucy would have had a heart attack if she could have seen this, and so would Dan. Dimitri had made the strange feel so normal.

"That's in the past," she scolded herself, out loud, because no one besides the shark would hear, and it wouldn't tell anyone. It seemed decidedly unimpressed by her. Alannah decided that she wouldn't get more entertainment from that particular fish, and let the remains of her dinner drop from her hand. The shark turned rapidly to snatch the easy bite and went on its way. With it gone, the uncomfortable feeling of being watched and judged returned to the mermaid in full force. She wished she had a waterproof watch as she swam deeper, hoping that the twenty-four hours would pass a little faster this time.

It didn't take long for Dimitri to float off, further into the sea. He was curious about what information he could get from interviewing the sea life. At that moment, Dimitri heard a voice faintly from the other direction. It wasn't the first time Dimitri had heard a voice in the sea, but he recognized this one. Dimitri's head tilted and he headed toward the voice, with haste.

"What's in the past?" Dimitri asked, curiously, after overhearing the last of Alannah's conversation. It wasn't in Dimitri's code to skip a greeting, let alone start a conversation with a question about what he'd overheard. Dimitri felt so comfortable with Alannah at one point, adjusting to be preserved was a job all on his own. In a sense, Dimitri never needed to greet Alannah because he never would truly say goodbye. To the demigod, it was more like taking a break from the conversation when they weren't around each other, and the conversation would resume at their earliest convenience, but never actually end.

Of course, that didn't apply anymore, to Dimitri's dismay. "I'm sorry, that was rude've me." Dimitri said, his tone now low-key, while he attempted to fix his wrong.

Then, like tripping into a wall, the feeling of the ocean hit Dimitri. He remembered how important it was that he was here, and as a knee jerk reaction, Dimitri attempted to grab Alannah's hand. "Alannah, it ain't safe down here right now." Dimitri had a difficult time registering everything. He'd wondered what she was doing here, but he was aware of her need to be in the water for 24 hours a week. Dimitri was simply astounded that he'd run into her, here, out of everywhere.

"What's in the past?"

She turned her head rapidly, startled at the too familiar voice. He looked just like he always did; as if gravity simply didn't exist for him. His dark hair, slightly longer than the last time she had seen it under water, drifted freely about his face.

"No, don't wo-"

She didn't get further before another wave of the odd, choking feeling hit her like a tidal wave and Dimitri's hand closed around her own. She instinctively pulled at it in shock, then immediately blushed. Dimitri was the last person she should be afraid of. She gripped his hand again, tighter, as way of apology, still too embarrassed to actually say the word 'sorry'.

"What do you mean, not safe? It's the sea. I could hardly be more at home. But - you felt that too, di'n'tya?" She asked, referring to the uncomfortable vibes permeating the ocean. "And what are you doing down here, anyway? Secret Nereus business?" She continued. It felt nice to be able to talk to him knowing his father wouldn't come by again with his infuriating grin and awful attitude. The thought made her blood boil. The nerve.

Dimitri felt a sting in his chest when Alannah pulled her hand away. He didn't have time to register the reasoning until she'd taken his hand back. A warm feeling washed over him when she felt her hand lightly squeezing his own, which was especially helpful to him in the current situation. Dimitri flashed a smile, broader than many he'd given in the past few months. He'd even let down an audible soft laugh when their hands were together.

"Yeah, 'supposed to be." Dimitri replied, about what his business was. He'd always been so conservative over his duties as a scion. But as his eyes drifted from Alannah's features and down to their hands locked together, Dimitri felt a sense of guilt. In that moment, he knew exactly what was more important to him. "Alannah, there's something ancient in the water. Stupid Nereus wants me to work with these really off-puttin' people. To get rid of it. I don't even know what it is. But I do know that whatever't is, its mere presence is causing this feelin' in the water."

There was a brief period of silence where Dimitri continued to look at their hands. At first, he'd done it to assure her of safety, but now he was wondering if he did it to make himself feel more safe too. "Um." Dimitri tripped over his own words. His eyes narrowed at his own response; a substitute for words he never once used. "I know we're talkin' 'bout uncertain gloom'n and death. But, y'know, I miss you. I miss this." Dimitri confessed, with a great deal of hesitation. "Just thought I should tell you. Just'n case this is my last chance."
