Roc:
Family: Birds
Ecological Niche: Large Solitary Omnivore
Height: 6 feet at the shoulder
Length: 12 feet from beak to tail
Wingspan: 18 feet (the Roc is flightless, but it can glide short distances if it has a running start)
Weight: 800-1000 lbs.
Lifespan: 20 - 30 years
Reproduction: 1-3 large eggs laid every spring. Mating pairs stay together until the chicks hatch.
Social Habits: Females form small flocks which forage together and raise young; males are solitary except around breeding season when they temporarily join flocks, and then leave after the chicks hatch.
Diet: Omnivorous; nuts, seeds, fruit, roots, leaves, bark, bugs, small animals, carrion, occasionally large animals.
Domestic Uses: Single-person mounts for travel, combat, and hunting. Very limited use as a pack-animal. May be used after death to boil for glue, use beak and bones for weapon and arrow crafting, feathers for decoration, rarely eaten. Never raised for slaughter.
Description: Rocs are the equivalent of the horse. Rocs are prized for their intelligence, swiftness, loyalty, and personality, which makes them excellent mounts and traveling companions. There are many different breeds, each suited to a different region, occupation, or social class. They are bred and sold everywhere, and among the upper classes they are commonly given as gifts or used in trade and diplomacy. Their appearance is very impressive; they stand roughly six feet tall at the shoulder and weigh nearly half a ton. They stand on two sturdy, scaly legs that each end in a four-toed foot with sharp, straight claws (the fourth toe faces backwards, for stability). Their wingspan is roughly eighteen feet, and though they cannot fly, they are able sometimes to glide short distances over chasms and the like, if they jump after a running start. They have short, fan-like tails. Their heads are the most eagle-like part of their body, with fierce-looking forward-facing eyes that come in a number of colors, and a fan-like crest on the head. Their beak is large, sharp, and yellow, with only a very slight curve. Their feathers are small and downy, not designed for flight (except on the wings, tail, and crest), and cover their body like a coat of glossy fur that comes in almost any color (except yellow!) Their odd shape and bipedal design make them ill-suited as pack animals, which is why caravans are typically made up of creatures that are better-suited to pulling carts.
