It is forbidden, dangerous, crazy even, but who cares. She needed to get out and just breath in the cool fresh breeze, feel the gentle brush against her cheeks, be tickled by the soft grass beneath her feet, and experience the forces of nature that she couldn't live without.

Even after getting miles away from home, the young girl weaved through the forest with silent and graceful ease. A translucent pair of swallowtail butterfly wings glittered across the soft shadow of the night, creatures seeing it one moment, then the soft light disappearing the next. The fairy too determined to go where she could find a sense of solitude.

With a great sigh of relief, the fairy sighed at the sight of her destination. Star lake, where the calm waters not only reflected the crescent moon like a perfect mirror but also the dancing lights of the fireflies. The trees around the frame of the lake were fairly young but growing to a decent height and plump with fruits for any furry inhabitants to feel safe and secure. Places near the human realm will never amount to the sacred land of the fairy temples but this young fairy just loved the wild nature. The unknowing elements that the elders seemed to fear but what caused the human realm to grow in unimaginable ways.

Still, the young fairy was not stupid and remained in the thick bushes by the lake to send a few wary glances around for any humans. Fairies were in fact the similar size to humans if only the difference being that the tallest fairy could only reach a height of 5'2". And their slim figures making them be mistaken for young elves. But compared to the strong pride of elves, fairies were far more careful and skittish around the other races, especially human. Why Miriam was breaking serious rules for being here.

Standing at an easy 5'0" and her dark brown hair tied back in a ponytail, Miriam tries to look tough, and seemed to be among others of her kind but she could not ignore the fact that she will always be naturally weaker than other races.

But what could it hurt being in a lovely place like Star lake was all Miriam thought to herself as she eased out of the bushes seeing no humans about. She shrugged and took a pumped up breathe of excitement she jumped up, wings fluttering into action, as she made her way to join the fireflies and their midnight dance.

Firelight glinted off the blade of Fen's hunting knife, a pale reflection of the flames twisting on its stained surface as he cut away at a long tree branch. The branch was about as long as a walking stick, with the bark scraped cleanly off to reveal a green-yellow interior. Fen cut away at the tip, shaping it roughly into a pointed tip, like a spear. His eyes and hands were diligently focused on the task, but Fen's mind wandered.

The last couple of years had passed by quietly, and he had sunk into that quiet like a tired man, even appreciating it. He had long been due a rest, and he had even turned down several contracts during those last few years, taking only the more difficult of the bunch to keep his skills sharp. For the most part, however, he relaxed, eased by the hum of nature and the hefty jingle of coins in his pack. He was a rich man now, and he had yet to invest his money in anything. He had not bought or built a home, he had not found a place to settle down in, and he felt the years begin to slip him by in near apathetic fashion.

Fen sighed and set the makeshift spear down, feeling it was sculpted enough. He would fish tomorrow morning and set off on his way. Maybe the thoughts going through his mind were good indication that he was nearing the point where he could finally make a decision. He had achieved everything he wanted, and now it was time to decide what course his life would take after. It was not a moment he could have ever foreseen coming.

A glint by the other shore of the lake caught his eye. He squinted in its direction, but he needn't have. The glint turned into a bright, yellow glow, and before long he realized it was made up of hundreds of smaller, dot-shaped glows. Fireflies. They flew closer to the center of the lake, twisting and turning, with a few of the insects sometimes breaking off, but never for too long.

Then, a human-shaped shadow joined them in their flight, seemingly out of nowhere. A winged human shadow. Fen furrowed his brow and stood up, completely taken aback. This was definitely something he had never seen before. He kept looking, but the figure remained in shadow, and the few times it fell directly under the moonlight it had its back turned. What could it be?

He was curious but had no idea how to approach it. Making his fire bigger could attract it, but it could also drive it away. He looked at the starlight that reflected off the water's surface. He remembered swimming for hours in cold ocean water, for no other reason than to have the experience. And he remembered a time when curiosity drove most of his actions. He smiled a bit at the memories, and before he realized it, he was taking his clothes off, leaving only his undergarments on.

He touched the water with a toe gingerly, then, ignoring the chill it sent through his body, eased himself into the water as silently as he could. He dipped down under the surface, opening his eyes to follow the light from underneath. He swam under the water until he was directly below the lights, then broke the surface slowly, with only his eyes and nose peeking out. He looked up and saw what seemed to be a small human with wings flying among the fireflies. It was a captivating sight.

What are you? he wondered.

Being back home with stuck up fairies and their traditions will never make Miriam as happy as she felt now. With a few twirls, she made the light of her wings brighten and soften, signalling to the fireflies, and with their small light circled around her in cheerful spirals.

A carefree giggle escaped her and she flew off along the surface of the lake the fireflies trailing behind her. Gently lowering her foot to slide across the water, it looked like she was skating. She could never have this much space to fly back home. Always the elders would tell her to fly slowly and with grace, to focus more on her duties than to the sky. Back straight Miriam. Chin even Miriam. Take your time Miriam. What was the point in having wings if they weren't used properly?!

Miriam huffed a disgruntled breath before breathing in more calmly, not wishing to sully such a beautiful night out in the wild.

Just as she was nearing one side of the lake, her eyes adjusted to a break in the water and for her to come to a complete stop when she realized that what was disrupting the water's surface was a pair of human eyes. A wet mess of hair on their head made her reconsider but she was sure that she was looking at a human's head and that their eyes were fixed on her.

Her heart raced with with sudden fear as she stared wide eyed back. But she didn't move from where she continued to hover above the water. A human? Or perhaps a water nymph? Miriam hoped to the ancients that it was a water nymph, or she will not hear the end of it from mother.

Being the first to break the eye contact, Miriam looked around as if in search for an answer before she just tried to slowly leave, as if her suddenly quiet nature would make the human lose interest in her. The fireflies certainly have as they returned to their usual routine and dance in finding a partner.

Fen's mind was working furiously, as if he were trying to speed read a book and flipping incessantly through its pages. He knew that somewhere in his travels, he must have heard something that would explain what it was that he looked at. Something to at least give him a clue. He had seen and heard so much, however, that it was difficult to piece through it all and come to any sort of conclusion. Whatever she was, he would likely have no way of finding out more unless he talked to her. He had a suspicion, however, that she was not going to be very willing to engage in conversation with him.

As his eyes and nose continued to float just above the water's surface, the winged woman stopped short in the middle of one of her aerial pirouettes, noticing him for the first time. She froze in place, staring back at him. Fen couldn't be sure, but she seemed to be sizing him up as well, probably wondering whether he was a threat or not. Then, after a few seconds of being completely still, she began to slowly back away. He couldn't be sure, but he thought she seemed rather scared.

Not knowing what else to do, and knowing that his chance to talk to her could soon slip away, he floated a bit higher in the water to reveal his entire face, then put an arm out and waved to the winged woman. He put on a friendly smile and said, "Hi!"

He looked around, as if noticing the shimmering lake for the first time. "It's kind of nice out tonight, isn't it?"

Upon the human just yelling, "Hi!"Miriam just froze completely in place, taken off guard by the sudden burst of energy.

The human continued to talk and by the tone of voice and the hard features of them, the human seemed to be a male. And it was very clear that he was trying to strike up a conversation to keep her around and join in on the talk.

Every muscle in her being said to just leave and never look back. It went against all Fairy knowledge to trust let alone interact with a human that would sooner catch them and use their abilities for whatever twisted plan they had in mind. But... this could be the only time she could talk to a human. To find out if all those rumors and stories were true, or if they were wrong. It would be music to her ears if she could find a way to prove the elders wrong and be able to come out into the world more. She didn't know how long the man was there and therefore he really could have captured her at any moment before she saw him, right?

Alright, all stupid reasons but she couldn't fight her curiosity. She wanted to know more. Keeping her distance she crossed her legs as if she was taking a seat in an invisible chair, her eyes still trained on the man this entire time. "Step out of the water human," she commanded trying to muster as much authority in her tone as possible as to not sound weak at all. "I want to make sure you have nothing suspicious on you."

Fen's lips quivered as an amused smile threatened to play on them. He wasn't sure whether she was potentially dangerous, as harmless as she seemed, but there was still something humorous in her attempt to seem tough. He thought he could sense it was an act.

"Well," he said, positioning himself so his back was on the water, as if here were sleeping on it, "I can't fly or walk on water. So I'd need to swim all the way to shore."

He took a moment to swivel his head all the way around the lake, resting for a second on the spot where he was camped at. He turned back to the girl, pointing towards it.

"I've made camp over there," he said. "We can settle down for a bit over there if you'd like. Or I could go wherever you'd like. Plenty of nice spots around the lake."

He raised both hands in the air, letting himself sink deeper into the water for a moment before swimming back up. "I promise I don't have anything on me, though. I just saw you flying around and got curious. Never seen anything like you before, and I've seen... quite a lot."

Fen's face seemed to wander for a second as he said the last words, and they were a bit more quiet as well. His face had been bring and curious, but for that moment, it seemed to have lined itself with age and weariness.

Miriam had to keep from blushing with some embarrassment at the human's points. He was right about not being able to fly or walk on water, the little smarty pants, and unless he was part nymph he wasn't going to swim very fast. So as long as she kept her guard up, she could fly away at the slightest sign of a threat.

"Very well," she said keeping her authoritative voice up. "We'll take to the other side of the lake opposite of your camp." It was a good idea to ensure that the camp itself wasn't a trap or where his weapons were, she'll have to check later once she could gauge how much of a threat this man was to her. Already as he floated in the water, he seemed rather tall and well built. But as nervous as she felt, her curiosity seemed to reflect onto the human and that air of sadness, even if it was a trick it definitely pulled at Miriam's compassion for all life, a trait that fairies have no matter what. Did he really not know what she is?

"I am an elf," she lied as she glides slowly to the water bed of the lake, leading the way as she keeps a close eye on the human. "Just testing out a..uh... new spell to help our kind fly and as you can see... it works." Miriam tried not to cringe at her lame attempt to explain her wings. Elves like fairies did have magical properties but fairies were stronger and more valued. She wanted- needed this human to think that she wasn't at all as special as he makes her out to be.

Fen couldn't help but notice how much effort the girl put into taking command of the situation. The longer he listened, the more he was convinced that she was actually not as confident as she wanted her voice to make it seem. Still, it would be best to play along, as he was genuinely interested in what he might learn from her.

"Works for me," he responded to her request to meet at the other side of the lake. He began to swim towards the edge she pointed to, his pace not too fast, not too slow, but very steady. His movements were crisp and effortless, as if he had done this a thousand times. He took the time to consider it, and decided he probably had. A lot of training, of all sorts of varieties, was required for the Adegan to even consider you a viable subject.

He listened to her as she explained her method of flying, and he raised an eyebrow a bit as a natural reaction, knowing full well that she could not see his face properly due to the darkness. Apart from the shaky delivery of the story, it didn't fit at all when he scrutinized the details. Elves could not fly, true; being able to fly would help them, also true; but he had walked among the elves before, even resided in an elven village for a few months. As far as he knew, elven magic was powerful, but not crafty in this sort of sense. If they were to create a spell that allowed flight, it would not be by growing wings. They would simply harness the energy to do it, and levitate through the air without the help of wings. At the most, he might have believed a swirling color of the energy expended around them to show, but he had never seen them create something with a spell, only bend pre-existing material and conjure concentrated forms of energy.

"I'm glad to see they work well," Fen responded to the would be elf. "Though I don't buy the elven story. Don't worry, though, whatever reason you had for lying to me I assume to be justified and nothing more than the product of a careful mind."

They finally reached the shore, and Fen crossed his arms in an effort to keep his body warm. He had grown accustomed to the frigid temperature of the water, but his wet body exposed to cold air was harder to keep under control. Something nagged at the back of his mind, something that told him he should remember what this winged girl in front of him was. He was too cold and curious to think straight, however, and momentarily dismissed the thought from his mind.

"Mind if I start a fire?" Fen asked. "I'd like to be a little cozier when I talk to you."
