The moonlight cast its beautiful glow down on the quiet little town. It was about 10PM, and there were only a few people out and about in the streets; many people were either at home, or out and about somewhere. The faint cast of light from passing headlights on a red stop sign at a silent intersection. Lights from shops and businesses were faint but scattered about the town. With the dark sky, it was hard to tell that there were even storm clouds setting in, and that beautiful moonlight glow would last for only a moment before being completely smothered by the clouds. Loud rumbles of thunder boomed in the sky, and only did the first drop of rain hit the sidewalk. The only noise that could be heard, drowning out all other sounds was that of the new rain pouring down as a sprinkle at first. The rain surely picked up into quite a downpour, with those who were walking about the nightlife quickly ducking into buildings to keep dry.

Among those wandering the dark streets that night, a tall, thin creature was taking its strides quite cautiously. Any sight of a car, any sense of a splashing puddle or kicked up gutter water of course would make it jump. This being appeared to be made out of some time of crystal like material, it was a strange looking alien-like creature. One that seemed to have wandered down from the mountains possibly?

A loud crack of thunder and a flash of lightning startled the creature as it walked quickly down a dark alleyway, hiding itself from sight. This creature appeared to be about 6' tall or so, if not a few inches more. It had long, thin arms and legs, its torso also rather skinny except for its waist that seemed to protrude a bit. Each hand had three fingers on it, with the feet only having two toes. With the loud noise and scary weather, this creature decided to go and take shelter under a dark awning near an apartment complex. It was against the wall, kept fairly out of sight for the most part, except for the occasional flashes of lightning that lit up the sky like fireworks.

It started to chirp quietly, looking up at the dark sky for a moment, trying to search for the moon that was now hiding. The chirping died down a bit when it heard splashing, as if someone were walking around. From there, it remained quiet, listening carefully while trying to look around in the dark.

It had been an almost brutal flight. Thirteen hours from one country to here, with every type of person one could think of to make it worse. There was the mother and constantly crying baby, the seat kicking child who's parents said was just restless, and the man who's anger grew steadily upon the child. And not to mention the woman who found something wrong in everything! His fellow crew members had all gotten to the ends of their last nerves and sent Russell to deal with the many call buttons pushed. With a smile he had served them all, wishing each of them a good night as they stepped off the plane at the airport.

After helping to clean out the cabin, Russell had been told to go home, they would call him when he had to go back in. Nodding gratefully, Russell fished his jacket out from his small luggage bag, having seen the rain coming down and hailed a taxi to take him to the apartment complex he called home. He had dozed on and off in the taxi, the warmth from the heaters, and the steady drumming of the rain lulling him into his current state. The driver nudged his knee when they arrived and Russell jolted awake.
"I am so sorry." He said, digging in his pockets for the cash to pay the man. He handed over a few crumpled bills and an assortment of coins and stepped out into the rain.

The puddles had grown around the sidewalk, forcing Russell to step in them on his way to the front of the building. He fumbled in his pockets again, hoping he hadn't lost his key. It had been a while since he had had to use it and it normally hung on a lanyard around his neck with the rest of his keys, but he had removed it earlier that day when it had caused him to nearly be choked by a small child.

Stopping in front of the door under a small awning, he propped his suitcase against the wall and began turning his pockets inside out. When he was sure he had lost it, the sound of metal clinking on the ground brought the smile back to his face. Reaching down he picked it up quickly and turned to go back to the door and let himself inside. A flash of lightning lit up the sky, followed by a crash of thunder. The lightning had lit up the alley located just to the side of the building, and for no particular reason at all, Russell glanced down the once darkened area. Not seeing anything at first, his attention turned back to the task at hand, getting himself inside and dried off, but just as the area was plunged into darkness once more, the tall figure of...something caught the man's eye. Turning back to the alley, he tried to see what, or who it was.

"Hello, is someone there?" He wasn't sure who would be out on a night like this, and he hoped it wasn't a robber. He didn't exactly have anything of real value to take, but the threat was still there. Having a heart for people though, he was also concerned that someone was stuck outside on a night like this. Maybe he could help them get to a shelter or something?
"Do you need help?" He asked, still trying to see in the dark. He hoped another flash of lightning would let him get a second look as he didn't have a source of light on him, his phone having been dead for some time now.

The creature hid there with its back pressed against a wall in the alley, as if trying to hide itself from the storm. Of course it was no use, and the rain soaked it completely. It would be quite a while for sure before the storm would let up, until then, it would be stuck here. It took a few steps in the alleyway, darkness surrounding every bit of it. Then, it heard the sound of footsteps which caused it to stop walking. It tensed up for a moment as it looked around the darkness, listening carefully for the noise. The sound of a voice speaking out to it, it was male, young possibly.

Taking this chance, it wanted to get away as quickly as possible, but as it backed up, it stumbled over some trash cans, causing a loud crash. The creature had toppled over, lying there in the mix of rainwater, mud and garbage. A flash of lightning lit up the sky for a bit before it made eye contact with the human. It didn't know what to do, it was practically petrified of course.

Looking around, it tried to find something to throw at the human, at least something to scare it off. Any empty or crushed soda cans that it could find, it threw at him. The heart in its head was beating fast, clearly afraid at what this human here would do. It was bad enough that the storm was here, but now he was face to face with a human, an unpredictable creature no doubt. It tried to sit up a bit more, having a hard time with all the trash laying around and the cans scattered about on the ground.

The creature then forced itself to stand up, cautious of course with its eyes on the human. It was too scared to move at this point. If this human showed any aggression, that was it, it would have no choice.

Russell jumped when he heard the crash. Taking advantage of the lighting as it flashed again, his eyes met those of the creature lying in the alley, the garbage cans fallen around it. He felt it was terrified, the way it was just watching him, and had likely been trying to get away. He hadn't been expecting the cans though. One hit his leg and clattered harmlessly to the ground, followed by several more. Russell made no move towards the creature, but tucked his key into his pocket.

When the next lighting flash came, he could see that the creature was now standing. He noted a pulsing in its head, but was unable to see much else as the darkness once more set in. It was like dealing with a scared animal, not knowing if it was going to bolt, or attack. He hoped if it did come down to either of these that it wasn't the latter as this thing looked to be taller than he was. The rain continued to pour down on them, if anything, getting harder, and much colder. He wasn't sure how this thing felt about the rain but one thing was for sure, it was scared.

Slowly, Russell lifted his hands up, showing he had nothing in them.

"I'm not going to hurt you." He said in a soft voice, trying not to freak this thing out anymore than it already was. He couldn't see it so he stayed where he was in the faint light from the door.

"I'm Russell." He continued, hoping he didn't sound too intimidating. "I wasn't expecting to find something out here other than stray cats." He chuckled. "You should probably get out of the rain -- unless you'd prefer not to." He added the last part quickly, not wanting to impose on the creature. "I don't want to hurt you, and I'm sorry if I scared you." He said, keeping his tone low and his hands in plain sight.

The creature stood there, flinching when it saw the human raise up its hands, but there was nothing in them? It was tense still as it watched the human cautiously. Another flash of lightning filled the sky, a loud sound of thunder scaring it, but it was too scared to move anyway. The street light that hung in the alleyway finally turned on, giving some light. The creature wasn't sure exactly how to feel about the situation, with the storm and this human.

All that came out of the creature was it mimic-ing Russell's words. It seemed to be the type of creature that would respond through things its heard.

"I'm Russell" the creature mimic-ed, staring at the human for a moment while repeating those few words over and over, in the human's voice. Seeing that the human remained where it was, the creature stopped talking and slowly took a few steps towards the human. Its heart was beating rather fast, still terrified of the storm that made it jump at each sound of thunder.

It raised its thin hand slowly, extending a finger to poke Russell's right cheek on his face. The creature then began to chirp quietly while going about poking at him curiously. It seemed this creature had no name, yet it was surely curious and rather intelligent to be able to mimic such noises. It's vocal range was amazing.

Russell couldn't help but laugh as the creature mimicked him. It was like listening to a recording, hearing his own voice repeated back to him. He stayed where he was, hoping this creature would see that he wasn't going to hurt him. He was grateful when the streetlight finally blinked to light, casting its glow down on the scene. He could finally get a somewhat decent look at this thing without having to wait for the lighting flashes. It was so unlike anything he had ever seen before, and he had seen a lot. He once more saw what appeared to be the creature's heart beating in its head, if that was the heart than this thing was terrified!

He nearly held his breath when it began to approach him, not wanting to startle it, he kept his breathing level and his hands up. He felt the poke on his face but stopped himself from pulling away as the creature continued to explore, chirping quietly.

He spoke softly, not wanting to scare the creature now that it was this close.

"How about we go inside, get out of the rain?" He said, tilting his head slightly towards the door.

He moved slowly, keeping his hands where the creature could see them, and not turning his back on it as to not appear to be hiding anything. Keeping his eyes fixed on it, he slipped one hand into his pocket and pulled out the key before unlocking the door and holding it open.

"Come on than." He said, pulling his suitcase around and waiting to see what the creature would do. He wasn't quite sure what he was doing, he just knew that in that moment he wanted to help this thing out, and the first step was getting out of the rain.

The creature blinked, watching the human carefully as it pulled something out of its clothing. Something metal like with little jagged edges. It tilted its head a bit before following after the human, wanting to look at the keys. Just by holding them, and hearing the jingling noise as it followed the human inside and out of the rain. It started to mimic the jingles before handing the keys back to him. It then stopped making noise to take in its surroundings. It was curious no doubt, but it was also unsure.

Looking back at the human for a moment, it slowly raised a hand to touch Russell's hair, while mimic-ing the sound of rain. It was as if it were trying to tell him that he was soaked. Pulling its hand away, it turned to look around for a moment before slowly walking deeper into the apartment. There were quite a bit of things around that it had never seen before, pictures of places and things. All this creature would do was stand and stare at them, trying to identify the different things.

Any pictures that had animals in it, it would start to mimic those animal's noises. However, it eventually went back to its normal chirping. What it didn't like though, was that it was all wet, the rain made it feel cold and uncomfortable. This caused the creature to sit down in the living room on the floor, its back resting against the base of a couch. Its heart beating as it tried to calm itself down from the storm that was still raging outside, with the occasional loud boom of thunder that would frighten it, or even the lightning that flashed from the windows.

Who was to say that this creature was all alone?

Russell was at first a little concerned when the creature took his keys, they were after all his only set. He was relieved of this concern however when the creature simply played with them, mimicking the sounds they made, before returning them to him. Using them to open the door to his apartment in the building he ushered the creature in first before following and closing the door behind him.

"Welcome to my home." He said, setting his suitcase down next to the door, vowing to unpack it soon. He watched the creature as it took in the surroundings, pausing to touch his hair and making the sounds of the rain before moving off into the place Russell called home. While it did this, Russell walked down the short hallway to the bathroom, pulling out two towels from the stack he used one to dry his own dripping hair, tossing the damp towel in the hamper, and carrying the second back out to where the creature was. He could hear it making animal noises, likely the ones seen in the pictures hung all over the small apartment from his travels.

Coming to where the creature sat against the couch, Russell held up the towel in his hands and knelt down in front of it.
"I'm going to dry you off, okay." He said before slowly reaching to dry off the creature, being careful not to make it feel trapped or hurting it. He left the towel with the creature when he figured it was mostly dry, and stood, hands on his hips.
"I should probably turn the heat up again, it's getting kind of chilly in here." He moved towards the door, turning the thermostat up a few degrees. He turned it down when he was gone, not wanting to pay for heat or cooling he wasn't using. Soon, the sound of air rushing from the grates filled the room and ever so slowly it started to warm up. As the storm raged on, Russell closed the few blinds he had left open to try and block some of the sights and sounds from outside, and turned to watch the creature.

What was he suppose to do with it? It didn't appear to speak, apart from repetition or mimicking, so communication would be difficult. There was also the problem of what this thing could do, or even where it came from. What if some government agency was tracking it right now? Hoping this wasn't the case, Russell chose to ignore most of these concerns for the time being, or at least until he had gotten some decent sleep.

Once more leaving the room, he grabbed some blankets from the closet in his room and returned with the stack, spreading them on one of the couches.
"You can sleep here for tonight and we'll figure out what's going on tomorrow." He said, patting a pillow into place. He wasn't sure the creature would use it, but he had also never made up a bed for something that wasn't human before.

The creature watched Russell come over with a couple of towels, wondering what it was that the human was doing. It could see that he was drying his hair with it, which made the creature mimic his movements, despite not having a towel of its own. But it was surprised when it saw him come towards him with another towel, to which it froze for a moment and wondered what it was he would do. But upon feeling the softness of the towel touch it, it found that the human was just drying him off from the storm. Glancing down at the towel that was left to it, it picked it up and ran its fingers through the fabric. Soft, like grass or cotton. "Soft..." it quietly spoke, keeping the towel close so it could dry off any other spots that were still a bit wet.

Right as the creature lifted its gaze, it found Russell standing next to some device. It was curious as it stood up to follow after him, dropping the towel by the couch. It felt a sudden change in the temperature, which startled it a little bit, not use change. But, when it felt warmth coming from a vent that it was standing under, it relaxed. "Warm.." it spoke. It allowed itself to be distracted with the warmth of the air, its chirping seeming a bit more calm and content in sound. The beating of its heart seemed to relax now, and the creature seemed rather content with things now.

But just as it turned around, it found that Russell was gone, which made it confused for a moment. It took a step to go look for him, but was surprised to see him return from a room with a pillow and some blankets. It tilted its head a bit before following after him, watching him spreading the blankets out and patting the pillow that was left neatly there. Lifting its eyes to look back at the human who told it that it could sleep here tonight. It looked back at the couch for a moment, hesitating before going to sit down on the couch. Running a hand over the surface of the blankets to find that they were softer than the towel from earlier. "Soft. Very.. soft.. Warm.." it would speak, before looking at the pillow and resting a hand on it. It found it quite squishy and also soft when it pressed its hand on it.

Finally, it decided to settle in, which involved wrapping itself up in the many blankets provided. It was similar to a child rolling up in a blanket like a little burrito or cocoon. From the neck down it was wrapped, sitting upright on the couch. The only thing that was showing was the heart in its head. The eyes of course were on its chest, which were covered by the blankets. It was quietly chirping for a moment, resting its back against the couch before going quiet, drifting to sleep. The heart in its head was just calmly beating, the bright colors flashing and moving about in its head. Such calming and beautiful colors, like a rainbow swimming in the sea like a serpent.

Russell watched the creature to see how it would react. He was slightly relieved when it sat down and brushed its hand over the blankets, saying that they were soft, and warm. Russell moved to turn the lights down, dimming them to a faint glow as the creature wrapped itself in the blankets and settled down. He also flicked on a small lamp next to the couch, not sure how this creature reacted to the dark, but seeing how it didn't like the storm, he figured complete darkness was out of the question. When he returned to where the creature was bundled, he chuckled and tilted his head to the side a bit. He heard the soft chirping fade away as he assumed the creature fell asleep. Russell remained where he was, watching the swirling colours. They were fascinating, not like anything he had seen on a living creature before. He watched the creature for a few more moments before turning away.

Quietly he left for his own room, having grabbed his suitcase on the way. Closing the door but leaving it open a crack in case something should happen, he unzipped the bag and began sorting stuff out. The clothes would need to be washed, sure he had washed them when he could while travelling, but between flights, and dingy hotels, the washing was never of the best quality. He dumped the clothes in the hamper in the bathroom, as well as returning most the items that belonged in here, such as his toothbrush, shampoo, and such. The only item remaining was his new souvenir, a carved wooden elephant he had picked up. Picking up the box it was in, Russell carefully opened it and pulled out the figure wrapped in tissue paper and bubble wrap. He set it down on the end table for the night until he could find a spot for it on his shelves tomorrow. Taking a quick shower before bed, Russell finally settled under the covers. He wasn't sure what to expect in the morning, or even if the creature would still be there. Deciding to worry about this when the time came, he closed his eyes and slept.

As the night rolled on, the creature was still fast asleep, and would remain that way until morning. Which, when the sun's rays started to peek through a few blinds, was when the creature would start to wake up. It was still swaddled in its blanket cocoon of some sort, the only issue now was if it would be able to get out. Opening its eyes, though knowing that it was dark with the blankets covering them, it made an effort to try and un-swaddle the blankets. It took quite a bit of time as movement was restricted, but after a good ten minutes or so, and some constant wiggling, the creature finally escaped its resting place which was the sofa.

Standing up away from the sofa now, it looked at the blankets for a moment until it decided to lay them all one after another on top of each other on the sofa. It was trying to copy how Russell had them, of course it was a bit messier. With that thought in its mind, it looked around the room, not finding the so called Russell anywhere. Where did he go? Quietly chirping, it walked about the apartment a bit, looking at things while also searching for the man who had found him just last night. The sight of a ajar door caught its attention, slowly and quietly walking towards it before pushing it open slightly, finding that who it was looking for was asleep. Tilting its head a bit in curiosity it stepped in, looking around the room for a bit. It could see the hamper that had a bunch of clothes in it, which the creature didn't quite understand.

It reached in to pull out some dark jeans, even going as far as putting them on its head like a hat. It looked over at the end table, seeing the wooden elephant sitting there. It did not know the noise of such a creature, so it did not mimic the noise it made. Instead, it turned its attention over to a sleeping Russell, and instead of being sincere with waking the human up, the creature practically flopped across him like a child would to their sleeping parent. "Day... Sun.." it spoke.

Russell was dreaming about other countries, probably I side affect of traveling so much. In the dream he was moving from one country to the next at rapid fire, as though watching through a camera, and with each click the scene changed. It finally settled on what he assumed was Egypt and he found himself wandering the streets of a small town, and into the market where he took up his hobby of searching for the perfect souvenir. As his dream self leaned over a stall display to get a better look at the carved stones in the cases, a shadow fell across the market. Ignoring it as a cloud passing over the sun, Russell continued to browse until the sounds of screams forced him to look up. Looming over them was the Sphinx. Russell found himself pinned to the spot and unable to get away as the Great Sphinx lifted a massive paw and crushed the entire market.

Waking with a start, Russell felt a weight on top of him moments before hearing the two words. A hand flew to his face as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
"Gah! Oh, it's you." Russell said, looking down at the creature sprawled across him. "And are those my jeans?" He asked, pulling the clothing off the creature's head and sitting up. Stretching, the man addressed the creature again.
"I guess this is your way of telling me it's time to get up than." He said with a yawn, swinging his legs over the side of the bed and standing up. He still wasn't sure what he was going to do with this thing, but right now his stomach knew what it wanted.
"Come on, let's go get some breakfast." He waved the creature to follow him as he walked into the small kitchen, still clad in pajamas. Just as he got there he heard the doorbell ring. Casting an eye to the creature he led it into the living room where it wouldn't be seen, and rushed to the door.

"Morning Russell. Here's the groceries you wanted me to pick up." He had forgotten that he had asked his neighbour to pick up some things for him when he got back, knowing that he wouldn't have anything in the house for when he got home.
"Uh, thanks." Russell took the bags, placing them just inside the door.
"So how was the trip? Did you bring anything back?" Russell kept nervously looking back, hoping the man wouldn't see the creature he had taken in.
"Yeah, but can we talk later? I got the stove on." He lied, hoping the man would leave.
"Alright, wouldn't want you to burn the building down." The man laughed. Russell closed the door and released the breath he hadn't realized he had been holding.

The creature followed after Russell when he had gotten out of bed, forcing itself up from the bed that it had flopped on moments ago. "Break..fast?" it questioned curiously, following Russell around like a small child would. Just as they were about to get to the kitchen, a sound rang out through the house, the doorbell. The creature tilted its head in confusion, only for the human to put him in the living room, where he had to be quiet. Watching Russell walk away, it could not help but peer around the corner, watching Russell talking to someone beyond the door. It waited quietly, observing the two humans for a moment until the door closed. The creature came out of hiding from the living room and walked over to Russell, looking at the bags of groceries for a moment.

Looking at Russell, the creature mimic-ed the doorbell noise before looking at the groceries. It reached down to pick up one of the bags in its arms. "What is?" it questioned, peering into the bag like a child trying to see what was in the bag. Obviously food that it hadn't seen before or really understood that well. Without saying much of anything else, the creature carried the bag into the living room where it sat down on the couch, setting the bag down next to it. It started to go through it in a nosy manner. Each thing it pulled out, it tried to figure out what it was, despite not being able to read, it would constantly ask itself "What is?" to each thing.

Who knew that trying to take care of such a creature would be hard? Let alone, it would at least be best to give it a name, something it would respond to. It would be kinda weird to take care of something and not address it by something, right? Well, it was a strange creature anyway, one that wasn't discovered, its not like you could come up with a name to suit such a thing. The creature managed to pull out a bunch of bananas, poking at them with its finger for a moment, trying to figure out what they were. They were soft, that was for sure, and smelled rather ripe and sweet.

Turning and leaning against the door, Russell opened his eyes to see the creature coming from the living room. He hoped his neighbour hadn't seen it, he would have a heck of a time explaining where he had gotten it. He heard it mimic the doorbell and groaned, that was going to get annoying quickly, especially if he thought it was the actual bell and not just the creature. Still watching the creature, Russell couldn't help but chuckle at its curiosity over the smallest of things, like groceries.

"Those are groceries, food." He explained, picking up the second bag. Russell started for the kitchen, before stopping as the creature carried the other bag into the living room.
"No, not..." He trailed off and shook his head, continuing to the kitchen and setting the bag on the counter.
"Alright, I need all this in the kitchen." Russell said, coming into the living room to see the creature pulling everything out and questioning each item. It was as bad, if not worse, than a child! Pinching the bridge of his nose Russell closed his eyes.
"This can't be happening. What's Vanessa going to think?" He said to himself. As soon as the words left his mouth his head snapped up. "Oh no." He had completely forgotten that he had told his girlfriend when he was coming back and that she was planning on coming over...today! How was he suppose to explain this thing to her?

Striding to the couch, he began collecting the things as the creature pulled them out of the bag.
"Null, we need to get this cleaned up so I can make us some food, okay?" He wasn't sure where the name had come from, but it fit since the creature was devoid of any gender as far as he knew, it's age was unknown, in fact, everything about it was unknown.
