Azriel’s heart was pounding hard in his chest. His back was against the wall, trying to keep out of sight. The gun in his hands nearly trembling, he was gripping it that tight.

The day already had gone off to a bad start when he was informed that there were some unwanted individuals in the city, only got worse when he found himself in the middle of some sort of conflict. He wasn’t even sure if these people were involved with those he was after. But, the odds did not seem to be in his favor. Now he was stuck here, having to shoot his way out. He’d called in a few minutes ago and has yet to see anyone.

Being told to stand by was making him anxious. There wasn’t even much activity on the other end.

It felt like he was in some kind of odd stalemate. Azriel did not like this feeling at all, no, he’d rather there be action. That way he knew what was happening, and could act accordingly. He wondered if they were trying to wait him out, see if he’d make some kind of move. Of course, there was the possibility he was getting worked up over nothing and they had moved once after he had broken their line of sight. It was possible but, having been in this line of work as long as he has, Azriel definitely had his doubts.

He peered around the corner, alert, keeping an eye out for anything. Thinking the coast was clear, he tucked his gun back into its holster and stepped out. He relaxed, inhaling deeply and releasing all the tension he felt. But he kept what he recalled seeing of the men in the back of his mind. Things looked fairly calm now, but he could cross paths with them later. Hopefully, before that happened, they would either leave or be taken care of.

Just in case, he decided to keep a low profile. It might be better to go home for a few hours.

Azriel realized he was not totally in the clear when something else caught his attention, however.

It had not been a good day. Not at all.

Dawn pulled herself along the walls of the alleyway, fingers clinging to any ridge in the brickwork they could find. Anything to keep her upright and moving. Vision was blurry now as she peered over her shoulder to check for any of the men that had slashed her before. No one, for now. The scent of blood burned her nostrils, making them flare.

The girl was unsure of where she was at this point, she'd been running for a while. The alleyways seemed like the best idea at the time, easy to lose the men she was fleeing from. Now she was lost and injured.

She stumbled over onto her knees, hand clutching at the deep cut that ran along her collarbone and shoulder. The blood was dark crimson, staining her white vest top and the tips of her long blonde hair. She must have hit her head at some point too because her forehead was stinging. Why had they attacked her anyway? How did they know what she was? She had been in human form for a couple of days and had nothing to do with the recent killings that had been taking place.

Now was not the time to ponder on such things anyway. She had to make it to some kind of public area if she was to have any chance of surviving. She began to crawl, hoping the trashcans and boxes that filled the alleyway would keep her out of sight as she traveled.

Any other person would have dismissed the sound, thinking it was a rat or a stray cat or dog. Not Azriel. He firmly believed that there was someone there, hiding away. Time would tell whether or not this person was just someone, maybe a homeless person, just hanging out.

His brow furrowed and he held still, trying not to draw their attention. His jaw clenched as he felt the tension he’d expelled build right back up inside of him again. It could be that he was just paranoid; his senses were heightened, actively seeking out any sort of disturbance. What if it was those men again, waiting for him? A distraction, perhaps? He contemplating reaching for his gun, thinking that it was better to be safe than sorry, and found himself taking slow steps toward the alley.

He continued to listen.

Azriel caught something out of the corner of his eye -movement outside of the alley. He didn’t bother to look over his shoulder, he knew deep down, it just had to be those men. It was then that he noticed some blood on the ground. This was yet another thing, easily missed by someone just passing through. But a trained eyed could easily pick up a sight, even if it was not well hidden.

He bent down and touched it. Was it human blood, or the blood of a dog or cat? Something told him it wasn’t the blood of some small rodent. However, the footsteps behind him told him he needed to keep moving. There was no time to keep stopping, he reminded himself. He would figure out where that blood came from sooner or later; if they were injured, they probably weren’t moving that fast.

Perhaps, sooner than he expected. Someone darted out from behind the boxes a few feet ahead of him. He jumped, and reached for his gun, prepared to shoot.

All movement stopped when Dawn heard footsteps behind her. She pressed her back firmly against the wall and pulled her knees into her chest. An audible groan escaped her lips as she caught her cut with one of her knees, which made all efforts to hold her breath in vain. Damn it. Perhaps her pursuers didn't hear that? No, of course they did.

Eyes darted around the dark alleyway, in search of anything she could use as self-defense. The only item besides boxes and trashcans was a soggy pizza box, mostly disintegrated from the rain. Great.

If she could, it would be the perfect time to shift to wolf form. That would give her the speed she needed to lose the men attacking her. She was too injured, though. It would be impracticable to try and change now.

Dawn couldn't see any other option, she'd have to wait it out. Hope that whoever was behind her was just an innocent civilian trying to make their way round the dark streets. She let her head flop down, staring at the ground and trying to detract attention.

Azriel knew that had not been his imagination. He had definitely seen someone there, even if it was just for a brief moment. Lowering his gun, wand wanting to keep moving, he stepped over a few boxes, keeping his eyes peeled. They were hiding, he could almost feel how close they were. Going back to earlier thoughts, maybe it was a homeless person, or an animal. He ultimately decided to just dismiss it considering there were other things he needed to worry about now.

He pulled out his phone and checked his messages. Nothing. He swore under his breath, glancing over his shoulder when he thought he heard something amongst the boxes again. Hopefully his back up would show up soon, otherwise this situation was only going to get worse. He was more than prepared for it, of course, but he would rather not be between a rock and a hard place. It would be just his luck if something else were to happen.

Oh, and he thought himself to be a very lucky man.

Almost right on que, A car pulled into the alley suddenly, heading right for Azriel. He managed to dive out of the way, but just barely. He could almost taste the rubber from the wheels on the tip of his tongue. As three people got out, he crawled behind a few boxes sitting near a dumpster. His hand simultaneously grabbed his gun as he waited, as he was unsure whether or not this was his backup.

But he was not alone in his hiding spot. He had seen her… but had she seen him? The question was thought about briefly, before he dismissed her as someone who might be homeless, probably sleeping as well from the way she was laying. He was more interested in the new arrivals.

The sound of the car revs made the injured girl jump, though her eyes were still stuck to the floor. Frozen in place.

Dawn smelt the stranger before she saw him. Their essence was different from the men before... sweat. Old cologne? She couldn't quite figure it all out under the strong scent of her own blood. She kept her head dipped, this - man? - wasn't saying anything to her, she would keep quiet too.

A car door swung open, bashing against the wall of the alleyway before slamming shut again. Two more doors followed, before the sounds of hurried footsteps took over the otherwise silent alleyway.

"She went this way. I saw her." One man called angrily, holding onto his pistol as he kept it aimed in front of him. He was dressed in all black, apart from a red band that was tied around his bicep.

"How hard can it be to find her? Blonde girl. White top. We slashed her pretty well, she can't be moving fast." Another one replied, heading down the opposite way.

Busted. The girl looked up to the stranger sat opposite her. Her hair moved out of her face and revealed the cut across her chest as blue eyes pleaded. She furrowed her thick eyebrows, shaking her head and holding her finger in front of her lips in a 'shh' position. Hopefully this man would stay quiet. That's what she thought until her eyes trailed down to notice the gun that was also in his hands. ****. She extended her leg in an attempt to kick the gun out of his hand. It wouldn't save her for long, but it would keep her from getting shot in that moment.

It was just Azriel’s luck that his company happened to be someone associated with those men. Handing her over had not crossed his mind, but the annoyance he felt when she kicked his gun out of his hand made him wonder if he should. If it meant his own safety then it would be worth it. On the other hand, he did not recognize those men; he was sure that this was a different group entirely he was facing now, it would be dangerous if he got involved. He trusted his gut in this situation.

Azriel took his gaze off the woman and glanced around, wondering if the noise had given away their location. Thankfully, the one man was already too far away by now. However, going to retrieve his gun would still be risky. The other man had pulled out his phone and stood leaning against the vehicle. The distraction might work in Azriel’s favor but the gun had landed in a place that was pretty open, and he’d be easily spotted if he made a wrong move.

Fantastic.

This was not a good situation for him. By now, he had been hoping that his back up had arrived, but he was a big boy and could get out of this mess on his own.

So he decided to act. His gaze went from his gun to the woman, to his gun again. Then he got to his feet and went for his gun. The man by the car had seen him as expected. He turned to face him, snarling… Snarling? It was then he realized something was not quite right. But the information had barely registered, as Azriel was already hell-bent on getting out of there.

There was a face off. He was holding the woman at gun point (though the other man didn’t seem too phased), and backed up slowly. Once he was far enough away, he broke eye contact and began to head toward where his get-away car would be parked, praying it was there.

Little did he know, he was not out of the woods yet.

Dawn yelped as the stranger grabbed her and held the gun against her head. He was pressing against her cut, making it burn. The pain made her head feel light, she could barely focus on what was in front of her. She had realised that the stranger was not with the others, that should have been obvious from his attire. He didn't have a red tie around his bicep like the others. So, she probably shouldn't have kicked the gun out of his hand, but she acted out of impulse - something she often did. Shoot first, ask questions later.

Holding her at gunpoint seemed to be working though, they were moving away without much hassle from the other men. Now she didn't feel so bad for kicking the gun, though it got her into an even more of a sticky situation. Why was everyone trying to kill her tonight? She could not catch a break.

The men held their guns to him, but didn't fire. They seemed puzzled, like they weren't quite sure how to react to the mans actions. Perhaps they did want her alive, then, otherwise they would have just shot the pair of them.

It wasn't until they turned the corner that she struggled to break free, bringing up her leg so she could stomp down on the mans foot.

Azriel immediately dropped his hold on the woman, no longer needing to use her, though not without letting her know he was not thrilled about having his foot stepped on. He shoved her away roughly without so much as a glance in her direction. Hopefully they shared the same sentiments about going their separate ways. The street was his main focus now, looking around for signs of his ticket out of this mess.

He moved briskly, keeping up with the rest of the crowd, yet his entire demeanor was neutral. He was far from relaxed by had no reason to be on edge. Everyone seemed to be going about their daily business, oblivious that something was going on before their eyes. He used this to his advantage, keeping an eye on things. If something out of the ordinary would try to jump out at him, he would be able to pick it out from the crowd.

Eventually he slowed his pace and pulled out his cell phone, checking his messages. Sure enough, his getaway car was here, just a block away. Apparently he ‘couldn’t find a parking spot’, message ending in a sad emoji followed by an annoyed emoji. During this time of day, he believed it.

Azriel grinned, stuffing his phone back into his pocket.

That grin faded the moment he caught sight of a group of three men, noting a familiar face among that crowd. Swearing under his breath, he blended in with a group of people crossing the street. He pulled his phone back out and shot a message to his ride, saying to meet him the next street over, and gave his location. He opted not to close the message with an emoji. There was a chance that other group was still around, and he didn’t want to risk getting into any sort of confrontation.

His trouble did not end there, for he also caught sight of that same group he’d crossed paths with in the alley.

This was very, very bad. Azriel was now caught in between the people he got caught up with and people who worked with the man he was after to begin with. He bit the inside of his cheek and let out an irritated noise.

What’s next? Werewolves? Vampires? This was not amusing in the slightest.

Dawn stumbled when the man shoved her away, her fingers reaching for the buildings pipe to hold herself up. She huffed, murmuring a collection of curse words under her breath. She paused for a moment, looking down at the floor as she built up the energy to move again. When she brought her head back up to thank the stranger, he had disappeared.

Dark brows furrowed in confusion, as blue eyes scanned the crowd he had blended into. Not that she needed her sight to track him down, the scent of him still lingered. Easy for the young wolf to follow. She decided not to, though, he clearly didn't want to stick around and she needed to escape the area anyway.

Her efforts to blend into the crowd were not as smooth as Azriels. The sight of her alone caused people to turn away, the crowd slowly and carefully parting as she walked. A couple of strangers gave her a sympathetic look, though no one seemed to offer her any help. Charming. She limped her way through until she noticed the men from the alleyway nearing her. ****. Picking up her pace, she decided to find the man that had helped her before, he seemed to be in a similar mess to her anyway.

It didn't take her long to notice him, crossing the road with a group of people. She hurried after him, moving as fast as her body would allow her to. When she managed to get close enough, she grabbed his arm.

"Do you know who these people are?" She asked bluntly. It was only when she moved to see where the men that were chasing her were that she noticed the other group. Not people she recognised, but seemingly just as angry and heading their way.

The woman’s sudden appearance startled Azriel. He let out an exasperated breath, his brow furrowed. Had he been in more of a ‘fight’ mindset, he probably would have reaction a bit more violently when she grabbed his arm. The way his mind was working right now, hell, he probably would react negatively to anyone speaking to him, regardless. He was on the defensive at this time. But he managed to keep his composure and look her in the eye briefly, and that was all he needed. They should have gone their separate ways and dealt with their own affairs.

His lips parted as if her was about to answer her, voice his thoughts, but decided against it. Instead, he just shrugged, looking as annoyed with this situation as she seemed to be… Or was he just imagining that? More importantly, the men were closing in fast, this was not the time for idle chit-chat. Engaging in a gunfight in the middle of a crowded intersection was not wise. He had no intentions of making a scene, there was no need for it. But it looked like his pursuers had other plans.

After catching sight of the woman with him, the men from before exchanged words.

“This way,” Azriel said, keeping his voice low. The last thing he needed was someone tagging along, but it looks like they were in this together. He wasn’t sure where he was going, but it sure as hell was better than standing around.

Call it luck, his ride had pulled over. His phone had vibrated, so he knew that had to be him. If the woman was smart, she would follow him. The men were beginning to pick up the pace.

Azriel’s jaw clenched and he glanced at the woman again, and said, sharply, “Move!” He picked up the pace a bit, moving at a jog, pushing his way through a group of four people as he made his way toward the getaway car. By this time, both groups of men had begun their advance. Azriel prayed that there would not be any gunfire; if these men were smart then they, too, would avoid making a scene. It was always hard to tell, no matter how well he knew his opponent, especially when some other group was involved that he had no information on whatsoever.

No time was wasted getting into the car.

“Wait,” he told the driver.

The man scowled and looked over at him, “What do you mean ‘wait?’”

Azriel cut him off, “We have… one more we need to wait for, then we can leave.”

It was then the driver spotted the woman. “Oh, I see!” He said, grinning from ear to ear, “I didn’t expect you to be the type to pick up women despite the circumstances.”

Azriel was not smiling, “Keep your mouth shut and focus on getting us out of here."

Dawn nodded at the mans instruction, following closely behind. She didn't know him but it was a better option to being taken in by the strange men, or the other group that she hadn't seen before this moment. Still confused by why she was being hunted specifically, she shook her head, trying to shake the thoughts from her mind until she was in a better predicament.

"You try moving fast after being beaten up." The blonde responded to him, sighing heavily as she willed herself to pick up the pace. She was fed up of this day and couldn't wait for it to be over. When she noticed the car, though, she sensed this day was far from being over. Should she get in the car? This stranger could be part of one of the groups chasing her, pretending to help so he could deliver her to their doorstep. Or was the other group chasing him? She hadn't considered that possibility when she'd seen them moments before, but it would make sense. Maybe he was in just as much trouble as she was.

The one group were so close they could almost reach out and grab her and as she pulled open the car door, one member did. She huffed, bringing up her arm to elbow him swiftly in the face. It hurt the cut across her chest to do such an action but she had little choice - something this whole day entailed. Once he'd moved back, she hurried into the car and slammed the door, giving the men a sarcastic wave as the car would drive off.

"Sorry to budge in on your ride, boys." She commented, turning her head to look between the driver and the stranger who had helped her. "Where are we going?" She asked, hoping to receive some kind of real answer.

“I was told to drop him…” The driver paused, looking between the woman and Azriel, who gave him a sideways glance. He cleared his throat, “Well, a few blocks from here is where I drop you off.” His gaze seemed to linger on the woman.

Azriel sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair. The driver was lucky they happened to be in traffic at the moment, otherwise he would have had a better excuse to tell him to keep his eye on the road. Bringing the woman along had been a spur of the moment decision. Did he really do the right thing? His luck was already pretty shitty… It was going to get even shittier.

To say he was tense was an understatement. Every now and then he would glance in the mirror, expecting to see those men coming after them. They could not be the only ones in their group in the city, after all. With any luck, they would be fighting each other while the three made their getaway. Wouldn’t that be something? Well, as much as he wasn’t in the mood to be optimistic, the thought did cheer him up a little. That was something.

The driver spoke again, snapping Azriel out of his thoughts, “So… Who is this woman? Aren’t you going to introduce me?” There was a pause, “Are you holding her captive?”

“If I was, she would not have gotten into the car so smoothly,” Azriel replied, not really feeling inclined to answer the driver fully. Not that he had a solid answer for him anyway. Truth be told, he had taken that question out of his mouth. He had been saving it for another time but he supposed, since they were in this mess together, she may as well introduce herself. “To be honest, I… have no idea who she is myself.” He glanced over his shoulder at her, “Would you… care to enlighten us?”

Dawn nodded at the drivers answer, twisting her body to look out of the back window. A few blocks from here, it wouldn't create much distance between her and the men, they had cars and she could barely walk. It was better than nothing though, so she didn't argue. She was happy to just be able to sit down for a minute or two. Though her eyes lingered on the window, watching the city for any strange signs that would indicate the men were keeping a watchful eye on their getaway vehicle.

"Dawn, you?" She asked, looking down at the gash across her chest. She patted a finger on the skin surrounding, flinching at the pain. She really needed to get it checked, or bandaged up. It wasn't like she could go to a hospital, she sighed, wishing she'd learned some kind of first aid in her life. Being a werewolf she never really needed to, her injuries healed fast then others. Not fast enough for a situation like this, though. Her knees weren't so bad, just scraped from where she'd fallen on the floor and her head had stopped bleeding, thankfully.

"And why were you being chased?"

How was he going to explain this situation? Azriel frowned as he thought about the events that went down moments ago. He was still unwinding from it all, but now was not the time for relaxing. Staying alert was how he functioned in situations like this, where the hunter has become the hunted, because it was proof that anything could happen in the blink of an eye. It was something he picked up over years of this line of work.

“I do not think they liked the… “present” I left for them,” he replied to Dawn, shrugging his shoulders. His tone was kept light, almost humorous or amused despite his annoyance. That was the best he could give her. Whatever he part in this was, he could not reveal everything he was doing up until this point to a complete stranger. It was better to give the impression that they were just **** off at him and he needed to get out of there before it got ugly. The ‘ugly’ being where his gun came in, but he wasn’t going to bring that up.

They were getting closer to where the driver was to drop them off.

“One more block,” Azriel told the driver.

The driver just nodded, though the look on his face seemed to question Azriel’s decision. He didn’t voice it, but something was telling him to keep moving. This block was not completely safe. Something deep inside, call it instinct, was telling him that and he was sure as hell going o listen to it. Not to mention, he could not include Dawn in this. He may have decided to let her tag along, but he would be glad when they went their separate ways. The idea of being dragged into someone else’s problems did not sound appealing at all.
