The morning after Prince Ewan and his retinue were gone before breakfast, as planned. This was Ewan’s wish so as to avoid overhearing the news of poor, depressed Simon and his sad fate. Otherwise the Prince might be obligated to hang around and offer his condolences to the boy’s family. That would certainly make for an interesting conversation, he thought to himself.

As he rode away, Ewan decided that the night of Alexander’s wedding as in fact one of the greatest of his life. Not only had a major problem been eliminated for him, but the successful plot seemed to heighten the intensity of his rendezvous with Victoria. The Prince couldn’t help but laugh to himself from horseback, which drew some strange looks from his company.

“It’s nothing,” he explained without giving any details.

In actuality what had caused him to chuckle was the idea that perhaps other people may have to die to allow for a similar performance with his incorrigible secret lover. To that end, he wondered how she might respond when her poor husband Henry was, himself, the victim. The very thought of her gratitude for such an endeavor kept him smiling for the entirety of the ride home.

Many months later saw the Prince arrive once again at yet another wedding. This one, though, was a bit more subdued than the last. At the request of the groom’s parents, the wedding of Timothy Elmore – the heir to the Duchy of Hereford – was a modest gathering in the local church. The ceremony was marked with a feast for about fifty invited guests in the Great Hall of Highnear Castle. The chamber had been aligned so that the tables formed a large letter ‘T’ with the bride and groom at the center top. To Katherine’s side sat her proud parents; and directly beside Victoria sat none other than Prince Ewan himself.

“Dutchess, it is always a pleasure to be in your company,” Ewan said as Henry pushed in the chair for his wife. Once the ladies were seated the gentlemen sat down dutifully as well. Before long servants began circulating with flasks of fine wine.

“And your grace, Duke Henry,” Ewan added for good measure. “I am glad to see you are well. Your daughter looked splendid today – as she should on her wedding day,” the prince added casually making conversation. Ewan smiled as he thought to himself about his situation. If Henry only knew that he had been cuckolded for years by the man sitting beside his wife at dinner – conversation might not be so civil. Of course, Katherine knew that - but apparently hand't told anyone. Ewan smiled over at her whenever Katherine next turned in his direction.

The Duke and Duchess of New Haven paid for a simple burial of the young Simon. It had been Henry's insistence and Victoria, in a rare case, chose to let him have his way without argument. Henry had no idea that his elder daughter had been in love with the gardener and that she blamed herself for his death. Henry had insisted they pay for the funeral because the boy had worked for them for a few years and it was the least they could do. It had been a nice, simple ceremony. Not many people had attended the funeral or the burial.

Katherine never forgot her first love. She missed Simon so, even though she did not fight her mother when she was introduced to Timothy Elmore, the Duke of Hereford. She had learned, in the worst way possible, that one did not win against her mother. Although she did visit Simon's simple grave often, leaving a rose from her mother's garden on the tombstone each time. If only she hadn't tried to best Ewan and Victoria at their own game, maybe Simon would still be here. If only she had stood up to Victoria, left with him...She blamed herself for his death. It was clear to Katherine that a life without her was too much for Simon to bear. She'd never forgive herself for him taking his own life. She had thought she was so mature and the night of Alexander's wedding made her realize how naive she truly was. She thought she could have it all but now knew that she couldn't. She was born into nobility and noble girls didn't get to marry their soul mates. They married who their parents decided was best for various reasons, but never for love.

Timothy Elmore didn't seem like a horrible man, but he wasn't Simon. Katherine couldn't help but compare them. Whenever she had to spend time with Timothy, all she could think of was that she wanted Simon here instead. Wishes were for the fairy tales her baby sister enjoyed, though. Simon was gone and she was Timothy's wife. He would be the father of her children, the man she'd spend the rest of her life with.

Since Katherine was marrying into the Elmore family, Timothy's family had been in charge of the wedding planning. Her wedding had not been as grand as her brother's. Katherine had been okay with that. She wasn't married to the man who would always have her heart anyway. Katherine was the same age Victoria had been when she married Henry. She was even wearing the same wedding dress. For those guests that had been around for Victoria and Henry's wedding, there were lots of comparisons about how much Katherine looked like her mother today.

Victoria was thrilled how it all turned out. Another one of children married the person she wanted and their in-laws would someday support Ewan taking his brother's throne. She smiled at the irony that she was seated in between her husband and her lover.

"It is always wonderful to see you, your highness."

Victoria told Ewan with a smile. Henry took a seat after Victoria was seated and nodded his head to Ewan.

"It is good to see you again, my prince. And thank you. Katherine looks as beautiful as her mother did on our wedding day."

Henry took his wife's hand and kiss it, Victoria made the appropriate reaction. Even if she'd rather Ewan being the one kissing her body. Alexander and Gwendolyn took their seats, Gwendolyn was pregnant with their first child. Victoria told the prince with a smile.

"This turning into a very blessed year for our family. Katherine has been joined in the eyes of God with Timothy and Alexander and his lovely wife are expecting."

Once Katherine had decided to accept her fate, she took good care to be the perfect noble woman. Learning how she was going to be expected to act. She played the part well, even if there was a hole in her heart from losing Simon. She saw Ewan looking at her and gave him a nod of acknowledge. She looked at her brother and his pregnant wife and wondered if Alexander did love Gwendolyn now. She was expecting his child and he said he hoped to love her when she gave him a child. Or would the baby have to be born first before Alexander loved? Or would he always love his maid? What about her? Would she ever learn to be more then just fond of Timothy? Would she love him when she began to give him children? Would her heart ever heal from losing Simon? She had no idea and it scared her a little not knowing.

Ewan couldn’t have looked more pleased if he, himself, were part of their family. Little did Henry and Alexander know that in actuality, he was – from a certain point of view.

“Lady Gwendolyn, your blessed condition suits you very well. You look radiant. I assume you are feeling well?” he asked with his usual charm and apparent sincerity. “And you, Lord Alexander, you must be quite proud. It is too early for congratulations, so I instead offer you both my very best wishes for the future.” Ewan’s words were carefully chosen so as to not invoke even a hint of a jinx. Many people of the time were exceedingly superstitious, especially in regards to the dangers and potential complications that surrounded childbirth.

Upon overhearing the conversation Timothy’s father Charles – the current Duke of Hereford – smiled broadly and stood up, raising his wine goblet in the process. By that time everyone’s cup had been filled with some of the finest vintage in the Duchy.

“Join me in a toast – to our growing family,” he said simply before nodding at both Katherine and Gwendolyn.

“Here here,” many of the guests said in unison, including Price Ewan. Ewan then took a long sip from his glass and smiled broadly. “My compliments to the household. The wine is superb, Duke Charles,” he said with apparent satisfaction.

By that time the initial course of soup had entered the chamber in a large silver pot. As it slowly made its way around the T-shaped table a number of small conversations broke out.

“I understand the rains have been kind to you, Duke Henry,” Ewan asked. “It may be another banner harvest for your lands. Also, I am curious, have the burgers been keeping their place? From what I hear they have been making all sorts of demands in the southern towns.”

“I’m sorry to boor you with such topics, Duchess,” he later apologized to Victoria for speaking to her husband around her. “Tell me about your other children. How are they all getting along?”

Ewan sipped his soup with practiced etiquette as he listed to the responses to his smalltalk. While the conversation sounded inconsequential, though, to him it was actually very important. Ewan hoping to learn more about crop yields in Henry’s demesne as well as the well-being of the children who were – in actuality – his.

Victoria wondered what Henry would think if he ever found out how close to their family Ewan truly was. She was sure that would not go over well. Not that she ever planned for her husband to find out. If he did, it would only be because it was his time to pass on. Henry would never be able to tell other people that secret.

Gwendolyn smiled at Ewan and nodded her head.

"Thank you and yes, everything has been going very splendid."

Other then some morning sickness, that was quite common for any expecting mother, Gwendolyn was doing well. She loved being pregnant. To carry a life was amazing to her and her marriage was improving. Alexander seemed to be more affectionate to her once he realized she was with child. Alexander nodded his head with a smile.

"Very proud and thank you, your highness."

Alexander was like his father, he was excited about the idea about becoming a father. He wanted to be one like Henry. While he wasn't madly in love with Gwendolyn, knowing she was carrying his child, made him care for her even more.

Henry grinned at Charles, he raised up his own glass.

"Here, here."

He said, agreeing with the guests. Victoria raised her glass as well. Someday she hoped that one of her children or grandchildren would be the heir to a throne. It would take some time but she was a very patient woman. Henry and Alexander agreed with Ewan that wine was excellent.

Victoria was not offended that Ewan was spending more time talking to Charles and Henry. It was the proper thing to do, especially at a joyous occasion. While Victoria might run her household, in public, Henry appeared to be in charge.

"Yes, we have been very blessed so far this year. As for the burgers...They have not reached our land but we may need to contact the Royal Army soon if this keeps up."

Henry replied to the prince. The rain should provide a grand harvest. As for the burgers, that was a more troublesome problem. Henry was hopeful they would not arrive at his own doorstep. If they did, well, they may have to have an audience with the king and see if his army could handle the problem.

Victoria smiled to Ewan.

"It is quite all right, your highness. The younger children are well...."

She filled him on what her younger children were doing. Adam was becoming quite the jouster. If he had not been born of such high noble blood, he could have been a knight. Nicholas was becoming very skilled in horseback riding. Rebecca was doing well, she was very found of literature and picking up on foreign languages very easily. David was a little handful. He wanted to be just like his older brothers.

"...How is Master Carrick?"

She asked, not really caring, but she knew it was the proper thing to do. Ewan asked about her children, so in turn, she should ask about his motherless son.
