Anastasia Cassandra Green

-------****-------

Butterflies. That was all that seemed to be going through her stomach, butterflies. Anastasia Cassandra Green, a third year college student of Weill Cornell Medical College, studying botany, was currently being placed on a blind date thanks to one of her best friends.

”He will be great! John says he is one of his best friends. Don’t worry.” Her best friend, Sarah’s words, rang through her mind as she soon got out of the taxi when it pulled in front of the Met. Standing to exit the taxi, her height was revealed at around five foot six. Long black hair cascaded around her shoulders, in soft waves, and her bright blue eyes glanced down to her outfit.

It was simple, yet a little bit elegant. A pair of jeans that had decorations on the back pockets adorned her legs, as a long sleeved green shirt relaxed against her upper body. Her neckline was a scooped circle, as a silver necklace with a crescent moon decorated the space between her neck and the beginning of the fabric.

After paying the taxi driver, she moved up the stairs, and then headed over to where she was supposed to meet her blind date. It was to be at the Van Gogh display. Looking around the museum as she walked in, her eyes glanced at his art work, called, Cypresses. Admiring the oil work that he had so evenly perfected, her head tilted just a little bit to the side. There was a small tattoo behind her ear, three diamond shapes, one filled black, one filled red, and one half black and half red.

Hopefully, the man she was supposed to meet wouldn’t be some kind of a tool. However, one never knew. Apparently, Sarah said that Anastasia had met him once before, but it was at a party that John hosted, and honestly, Ana as she had her friends call her, didn’t remember much of the party.

It seemed that she got lost in time, recalling memories and thinking about how she hoped the blind date went over well. Pulling her iPhone out of her back pocket, she checked the time, five minutes she had been just standing there.

”Hello, admiring Van Gogh are you?” A skeezy looking male, who honestly had the facial structure of a rat, moved over towards her.

Ana glanced towards the male, placing her phone away. ’Please don’t let this be him…’ She thought to herself, as she then smiled a bit. ”Yes. I appreciate Van Gogh’s work. Do you?” She asked, not going to be rude to him.

”I like this work of art. Cypresses, you know, there is something I’d like to press to you.”

Ugh, just ugh. Ana rolled her eyes, and turned, going to walk away from the Van Gogh display, hoping to get away from him. Even if this was who she was supposed to be set on the blind date on, she wouldn’t humor him much longer.

A sea of yellow cabs and black Ubers filled the street ahead as far as the eye could see. Alex checked is watch again to find another five minutes had gone by in exchange for only a single block. At this rate he was never going to get there.

“Thanks, here’s good,” he said to the driver as he popped the door open. Since he had pre-paid for the ride Alex simply jumped out and started jogging away. He turned down the crowded sidewalk of Fifth Avenue at full tilt, barely avoiding other pedestrians as only New Yorkers can do. Luckily it was a spring evening cool enough for jogging in his new suit.

Catching his breath on the escalator, he tried briefly to tame his rebellious brown hair in his iPhone’s back-facing camera, but it was hopeless. He shrugged and did his best to settle his heartrate. First impressions were so important.

“That’s her…” he said to himself as he walked casually near Cypresses, the painting they agreed to meet at. “Wow…” he added to no one in particular, just loud enough for her to hear. But – why was she not alone? He watched her turn away and realized she was being bothered by some unshaved poser. Time for some fun, Alex thought to himself.

He walked up behind the man on his left before tapping him on the right shoulder. As the man turned Alex snuck in and placed himself between the two of them. It worked, as by the time the man realized what was happening Alex was talking to her.

She could see that Alex was tall, around 21 years old and had a slim and athletic build. He looked directly into her eyes with his light blue ones and smiled mischievously. “Anastasia?” he asked, “Alex. Great to meet you. And so…” he added, turning to face the man who had been bothering her. “Are you that guy I saw on the news today? YES! I knew you looked familiar. Is this really the best place for you to be? You know – all these cell phones and security cameras and all that. Someone is bound to recognize you,” he added, doing his best to keep a straight face.

Anastasia Cassandra Green

As the man had approached her, her eyes simply narrowed, something seemed off about him. Why would her friend set her up with someone like this? Watching him, she realized that this couldn’t be who her friend had sent her up with.

Soon, a man came up and tapped onto the random guys shoulder. As he had turned, the newer male turned and stood between the two of them. Protective. This was something she would have liked, was this Alex? Soon, he answered her question, as her eyes glanced up to the brunette. Smiling at him, she then nodded her head as he asked if she was Anastasia.

“Wh-What are you talking about?” The male asked, his eyes almost seeming to widen. Glancing around, he didn’t know what he was talking about, but he wasn’t about to take chances. “She isn’t worth it.” He grumbled, and quickly walked out of the MET.

With the male gone, Anastasia let out a gentle breath. Thank god. Looking up towards the brunette, she smirked. “Alex. Nice to meet you, and great save. He was actually getting disgusting. It’s refreshing to know that he isn’t the person who I was set up on a blind date with.” She admitted, laughing lightly.

“So, where should we head to first?” She asked, wondering where he would like to go in the MET. Personally, she would like to go to the Asian area, in order to check some of the tapestries that had been made within the history of Asia.

Glancing towards Cypress, she then spoke, “I don’t mind staying by Van Gogh, but as I hardly get out of the college library, I would like to be able to take advantage of today.” Her bright blue eyes glanced towards him, as she then tilted her head lightly.

Feeling her phone vibrate in her back pocket, she pulled it out to check it, and smirked, seeing a text message from Sarah. Placing it in her back pocket, she spoke, “Sarah.” She offered to him, as she then walked forward, closer to the Cypress painting.

“Sarah is great – She and John both are. If you text her later please say ‘hi’ for me,” Alex replied genuinely. He always thought a lot of Sarah but now he really owed her one. What a setup! If Alex knew Sarah had friends like Anastasia he would have agreed to this a heck of a lot sooner.

“It may sound crazy but this is my first time here. I know right? Four years in the city and no Met – I guess that’s Pre-Med for you. So I don’t exactly know my way around. It would be great if you picked out an area that you liked.”

The conversation flowed easily as they walked. “So you mentioned the college library. I spent a little time at Weill’s library on a research paper last year. It’s pretty modern. They have scanned journals that I’ve never even heard of before…” Suddenly Alex stopped dead in his tracks and raised his hand.

“Sorry, I should know better. I promise I won’t talk about school stuff tonight. I’m sure this is the one night this week you don’t have some big project hanging over your head. I’ll try to keep it that way,” he added with a smile. “I like what I’m studying, but let’s just say I’ll be glad when school’s done.”

“Sarah had a hard time explaining exactly what you want to be when you grow up,” he said with a mischievous smile. “May I ask?”

Nodding to Alex’s request, her eyes looked up towards the brown haired man, as she snuck a slight smile. Using the moment she had checked her phone, she texted Sarah back. ’He is very cute, he says Hi to you and John.’ She then placed her phone away.

As Alex stated that this was the first time to the Met, she offered a kind smile. ”Especially with a Pre-Med major though, it isn’t shocking.” As he commented about the college library, she nodded her head as he spoke about the college library.

When he spoke about liking what he was studying, he then turned the conversation in order to focus it on her. Moving over to stand near the Asian pottery artifacts, she then glanced back towards him, and spoke. ”As I once had dreams, I now want to be a botanist.”

Offering a light chuckle, she spoke. ”It’s honestly, ironic...How I got to want botany as my study...I was little, and I couldn’t get this stupid basic flower to blossom for me.” Moving her fingers over the flowers painted on the pottery, she tilted her head a bit.

”So, instead of just giving up, I wanted to learn all I could, how to raise plants, how to bring them back, what they could do.” She moved forward, heading toward the rugs made from bamboo. ”What about you, why Pre-Med?”

“For the golf outings,” he quipped in response. “Ah, well actually because I want to make a lot of money. No, wait – actually my parents are forcing me. I guess that’s not really true…” he added, rattling off many of the the usual reasons why people chose to become medical doctors but would never admit to publicly. “I just want to be called ‘Doctor’. ‘Doctor MacLeod’ has such a nice ring to it,” he added. At that point he had a hard time keeping a straight face – especially if he was able to make her smile in the process. “That’s why most people become physicians, anyway. I won’t lie to you – I do like all of those things – but there is another reason.”

He looked over the flower on the pottery and turned his head as well, mirroring the way she was studying it. “It’s not what you’re probably thinking, either,” he added, coyly avoiding the question. He dodged slightly since the full answer to the question was a bit complicated. That, and Alex wanted to keep some semblance of ‘mystery and secret’ about him for the time being if possible.

“I’d rather you try to guess, maybe at the end of the evening you could take a stab at it,” he said with a bit of a mischievous smirk. “But enough about me, let’s talk about you. Botany is really interesting. It must be challenging since your patients can’t tell you what’s wrong with them. I’ll bet what you do is as much art as science. I admire that, I don’t have much artistry in me,” he added with a smile as they walked to the rugs woven from bamboo shoots. “I would have no clue how to weave bamboo, for example,” he added stifling a self-deprecating laugh.

“So tell me, what is your favorite art form?”

The golf outings? Smirking lightly at his response, her eyes glanced up to him as he continued to explain why he wanted to become a doctor. However, it seemed that he wanted to flit around the real reason. Money, parents forcing him, just the title. As they walked over to the woven rugs, she then heard him tempt her to guess. Smirking to him, he then dodged back to her, as she listened to his words.

As he asked her favorite art form, she then smirked. “Now, now, can’t go telling my favorite. It’s a secret. However, I will tell you my second favorite.”

“Music.”

Turning her back to him, she glanced over her shoulder, her eyes seemed to be a bit mischievous. Walking away from him, she moved over to the music area, and soon she was standing in front of a picture of Beethoven. Beside it, was a small biography about the man, as her eyes darted across the words. “Stories from the artists, bled into their lives as they can not be denied a passion.”

The blue eyes seemed to glance over to where the rugs had been last located. There was a small group, speaking in hushed tones, almost sounding frantic, a woman came over and hushed them completely, escorting them outside. “You know how to fix a person who is near death, how to bring life to a child, and keep it sustained. Even Pre-Med, you are ambitioning to learn such acts of miracles.” Offering a soft smile, she spoke, “I find it interesting, you wish not to talk about yourself. Why? No desire in being a patient?” She asked.

Alex watched Anastasia as she walked over to the picture of Beethoven, all the while glancing back at him playfully over her shoulder. Her subtle teasing and mischievous smile caused his pulse to speed up and his cheeks to hint at a blush. Even after knowing each other for only a few minutes she was having an effect on him. This was a good sign.

He smiled innocently as he followed behind and listened carefully to what she had to say. He had always been told women preferred men of mystery. Still, he was starting to wonder if maybe she found his evasion a little suspicious. This was a blind date, after all – women knew enough to expect the worst from strangers. He decided to level with her rather than risk pushing her away.

"None," he quipped in response to her question. "We are the worst patients. By the way I’m not trying to be coy,” he explained with a smile that carried a hint of smolder. “I’m just trying to avoid depressing medical stuff. But I think you are the kind of person who would want to know, so I’ll just lay it out there. I'm hoping to become a pediatric oncologist. I want to help sick kids with cancer. I know that’s probably a downer so we don’t have to talk about it right now if you’d rather not. I just feel like that’s where I will do the most good in the world. My parents don’t understand why I’d want that specialty…” he said with his voice trailing off. He looked at the floor for a moment to find the right words.

“I don’t know how to explain it. Besides helping to cure them, there’s really no better feeling than making a sick kid smile. I’m pretty goofy in a white lab coat. I can really get them going, sometimes. It's the best.”

If she seemed open to it Alex stepped forward into her personal space. “I hope you don’t mind me saying all that, I know it was heavy. So, I’d love to hear about your number one passion besides music – if you are up for that,” he added as he stared deeply into her eyes.
