Aisceron, 02-04-2156 - Morning

The panel on the wall started speaking on a mechanical sounding voice after a touch:

"Good morning, Alice. 7:03 a.m. Air quality, 30%. Humidity, 37%. It should not rain before the night."

The young dark-haired woman listened to the panel and nodded. It was one of her habits, even though the young police officer knew she was talking to a machine.

"Thank you. Is breakfast ready?", she replied while looking around for her boots.

"Yes, Alice. Your boots are to your left, under the blue chair".

The brunette groaned. That blasted wall robot was way too efficient. Sometimes she felt tempted to shoot it. But it would probably just repair itself, the damned thing. Or at the very least ask for a repairman - or a repair whatever race - itself. And of course, it was a necessity for a lot of things.

"Thank you. I will have breakfast and leave. Should anyone come calling, let them know I am busy, but I will be around to visit them soon."

'God, I'm treating the machine like people treated maids way back when', the woman thought to herself. Sitting down for breakfast - coffee was a rare treat, but Alice could afford it -, she read the morning news before going up to the panel again. "Health check, please".

A soft buzzing sounded, before the machine spoke again. "Blood pressure is as should. Temperature is slightly high." A small drawer pushed out of the wall. "Vitamin C. Take it before you leave the house". The young woman sighed. "Very well, thank you". "Taking the tablet, Alice Green finally left her house. It would be another one of those days. Nothing relevant to do but patrolling the planet.

Aisceron was a relatively peaceful planet. Many races lived in it. Humans, aliens from many other planets, and many androids. Some humans preferred an android over a wall panel. It felt more 'social', or whatever. For Alice, even the wall panel was too much. She wouldn't want a robotic 'person' walking around her small living space. Just the thought made her have the chills. 'Where is this galaxy going to?'.

But back to Aisceron. It was a pretty comfortable planet. It had a nearly decent air. Quality varied from day to day, but every building had excellent air filtering systems. There was water, that was a must for most races. Food could be acquired in the regular market, albeit expensive. Good food, there is. There was the cheap, nearly tasteless but still nutritional, crap the poor folks ate. And there was always a smart-ass dealer who stole from a store and sold it cheap. That was pretty much what Alice patrolled for, day in and day out.

But in general, it was a good place to live. Criminality was really low. Violent crime had been on a null rating for years. Other crimes were dealt with quickly. The monitoring systems were excellent, and it was really hard to hide something. Whoever got caught red-handed was simply sent out to a penal colony. It kept the planet clean, and they never returned.

That was probably the reason why so many chose that place to live.

A large panel popped up in the air while Alice and many others walked down that street. Criminal activity happening. Those panels were useful, but damn annoying. Well, it was a need. It was clear that it was a quick way to communicate, as many officers moved in the direction of Section 9. It was always Section 9.

This was one of those mornings where Azriel just did not want to get up. Then again, anyone who had spent a lot of the night drinking wouldn’t want to get up the next morning either.

He took one look at the clock and pulled the covers back over him, shielding his face from the light that shone through the window. Letting out a soft breath, he closed his eyes and relaxed is body. Only a few more minutes, he thought. Long enough to sleep off this grogginess, and figure out his plans for the day. It wasn’t like he had anything better to do today but sitting around indoors wasn’t something he was fond of.

Unfortunately for Azriel, he wasn’t going to get those few extra hours of sleep.

“Rise and shine, sunshine!” The loud voice of the robot known as ROS, or Robotic Operation System, something along those lines, called out practically right in Azriel’s ear. Startled, Azriel sat up immediately, and glared at the robot. It stood only about a foot tall, and hovered next to Azriel as he made his way down the hall toward the kitchen. Unlike Azriel, the little robot was always energetic especially during the morning. Despite his attempt to tinker with his programming that was something that never seemed to go away.

“Come on, Azriel! It’s a bright, sunny day today. The weather is looking lovely!” ROS continued. But Azriel didn’t respond to the robot and proceeded to his kitchen. When he arrived, he noticed that breakfast was already made for him, placed on the table. It was still warm and the aroma filled the kitchen. The thought of food made him feel ill. Instead of sitting down to eat, he grabbed a cup from the cupboard and filled it half-way with water. He downed the glass in a few gulps.

“I detect you do not have that much energy, Azriel. Shall I do something to remedy this?”

“No, that will not be necessary,” Azriel murmured in reply. ROS didn’t seem to understand the concept of a hangover.

Moments later, Azriel got dressed into something that wasn't sleepwear, and threw on a pair of sunglasses. He decided to grab the toast that was on the plate of breakfast that ROS provided for him before leaving his home to start the day.

He stepped out onto the streets of Section Nine like he had done all his life. Section Nine was not the best place to live, but it was home to him. He got good business here and the bars were pretty decent, which was good enough for him. Honestly he didn’t need anything fancy and didn’t care for any of the high class places around this city.

“Stop! Criminal!” A monotone voice called out to him. He ignored it at first; this was Section Nine after all, and was usually bustling with criminal activity. Police drones were always around as extra hands. He wouldn’t be surprised if he knew some of the people who were going to be arrested today, or reprimanded for something. This was a good place to find someone in need for someone in his… line of work. ‘Line of work’ was used loosely here; what he did was kind of in the grey area.

“Do not ignore me! I cannot allow such disorderly conduct to continue!” The drone must have been a new prototype or something…. Or it could be malfunctioning. Disorderly conduct? “I sense alcohol in your system!” The drone continued. Ah, well Azriel supposed that makes sense, and perhaps it was his fault, but still. That didn’t mean he was part of whatever was going on. It was just his luck that he would walk straight into something like this on the one day he couldn’t afford it.

He turned to the drone and tried to explain this, but was cut short when the drone grabbed him. He knew better than to fight back, but boy was he irritated.

“Don’t worry, Azriel!” ROS said enthusiastically. “I will make sure your stay in jail is not very long!”

Azriel just groaned at the robot’s words. It was times like these when he wondered why the hell he even bothered purchasing ROS. He doubted it would be… helpful dealing with this damn police drone.

“Do not interfere!” The drone told ROS, “Or you shall be taken in with this man.”

Ah, new drones were always a delight. Their learning system was still a blank slate and they interpreted law to the letter. Not a very useful feature when they had to work Section Nine, but how else would they learn? Of course, until they did learn, they were more like gigantic pains in the ass than anything resembling a police officer. Well, at least they got to hold alleged criminals until a real officer, with a real brain, could come to the scene.

And that was exactly what the drone Azriel had the misfortune of coming across did. Initiating the detaining protocol - one step before the arresting one - the drone grabbed Azriel and kept him with his feet above the ground.

And then, of course, his little robotic companion had to intervene.

At the precise moment the drone was threatening to take ROS in with Azriel, the transport system with the flesh and blood officers stopped at the area. Only one officer stepped out, and the system went on to other troublesome areas.

"Okay, rookie, what have we got here?". The female officer, a brunette with a somewhat bored expression, approached the drone. "Detain protocol, well done", she reinforced. Only after those words did the officer look at the drone's 'prey'.

"Really?", was the first word out of the officer's mouth. "Not you again", she completed, turning to the drone. "What seems to be the problem?"

The drone turned around to the officer, turning Azriel with it. "I have detected alcohol in his system. Above legal limit". The officer rolled her eyes. Legal limit was practically zero, so pretty much anyone who had been drinking was above the stupid legal limit.

"Very well. Hand him over, rookie. I'll take care of the proceedings from here on, and you can go back to patrolling". The drone seemed to think for a moment before acquiescing. "Very well, officer. Have a nice day". "You too...", the officer paused and completed after the drone went away, "...stupid piece of tin". "Come on now, Azriel, you know the drill already. Is your minion coming with us?"

It was hard to suppress a scowl as the woman approached the scene.

“This is ridiculous,” Azriel growled under his breath as the police woman and the drone exchanged words. These drones and robots might have been enjoyed by some people, but not him. Didn’t they have better things to do? Disorderly conduct his ass. It wasn’t like he was causing any sort of trouble or anything. Since when was going on a stroll through the neighborhood a crime?

Damn these drones… he could not say that enough.

He was clearly not pleased to see an actual officer had been summoned. He had been expecting it, sure, but he’d hoped he could have told the drone off before this happened. Then again, someone who was actually living was a lot easier to deal with than someone… something… that was probably thrown together in half an hour.

“I do not see what I am doing wrong,” he protested, irritation laced in his tone. “I was merely going for a morning walk.” But his words fell on deaf ears. An actual person was easier to deal with than a drone, but it was still pointless trying to plead his case. An officer was an officer, and their word was law; it will take a hell of a lot to persuade her, especially since he had been drinking the night before

“Azriel, you should know, this woman is well-known in the force.” ROS chimed in after it was finished analyzing the officer.

ROS went ignored as Azriel decided to answer the woman’s question and looked at the robot with a rather annoyed expression, “No… ROS is… not coming with us.” ROS didn’t seem particularly happy with this decision, and would have protested if it weren’t for the gaze Azriel had given it. He didn’t trust the little robot as far as he could throw him. The last thing he needed was for it to say something stupid and make a mountain out of a mole hill.

Hopefully this wouldn’t take long…

"Yeah, nobody ever does", the police officer replied when Azriel said he didn't see what he was doing wrong. "If I got one credit for every time I hear that, I would be able to retire within this year", the woman completed, referring to the currency used in the planet.

After Azriel made up his mind about whether or not ROS was going with them, the officer nodded and gestured for the man to follow along.

"Going for a morning walk with a lot of alcohol in your system. You know, I've heard the recommended conduct would be to stay home and drink lots of water", the woman completed, keeping a steady pace.

"So, while we take our morning walk together, have you been behaving lately, Azriel? You're made quite the name for yourself back in the district, you know". Despite her attempt at humor, the officer looked serious. "So, is there anything I should be prepared for?", she completed. It seemed for anyone who didn't know the officers around that the young woman wasn't paying enough attention to Azriel, and that he could run whenever he chose to. But anyone who had ever tried to run from an officer, or knew anyone who had, was aware that it wasn't a smart idea.

If he behaved, though, it would probably be just a nuisance. A while sitting in the district, answering questions, and that would be it, unless something would come up in that interview. Thinking about how stupid the laws were, Officer Green just waited for Azriel to answer her question.

Azriel’s lips formed a thin line as he exhaled slowly. He was use to being harped on about his drinking habits, but there was something about an officer doing so that was just plain irritating. It was always bad news whenever cops started snooping around in his business. They were so nosey, especially now that they had these drones squealing over everything from someone not parking perfectly along the street to someone snoring. Minor things, for the most part.

“I simply wanted some fresh air,” he said softly, ignoring her remark about his behavior and what she needed to look out for. It didn’t come as a surprise that he’s made a name for himself here. A lot of people knew him, what he did, and it wasn’t a surprise that the police had caught wind of him. It was their job to know everyone here. Of course, his name wouldn’t be known if it weren’t for a few people who were incapable of keeping their mouth shut.

In fact, Azriel was beginning to feel more amused than anything. She must have heard some rumor about him, and, well, rumors get twisted and once an officer hears something it’s stuck in their mind. But he was not going to press his luck with such a comment, and didn’t have any interest in elaborating or clearing it up either. It wasn’t a huge issue anyway.

Suddenly, Azriel halted stride and turned to face the officer, “Surely you have better things to do than babysit me?” He inquired, looking her right in the eye. A bold move, but sometimes he just couldn’t help himself. “Are you… aware that this is Section Nine? There are other things to worry about than someone who wants to walk off the effects of a terrible hangover…” It wouldn’t be that easy to get her off his back but, since he had enough sense in him not to run, if she wanted a conversation, well, now she has one.

Alice knew full well that she was being annoying. It didn't bother her at all. Actually, the officer had to admit it was a little entertaining. Of course, she had to admit it silently and to herself alone. Never to anyone else. Another thing Officer Green would never admit was that she disliked the drones as much as anyone else. Those pieces of tin could be trained before going out in the streets, but no. The MP thought they would be better off with the laws wired in and learning on the job.

"Fresh air, that's amusing", the officer replied. She didn't really expected Azriel to spill the beans. But maybe if she irritated him enough he'd let something slip out. Sure, anything they knew about him was second hand. But the officer would bet that if it wasn't all true, it was pretty close to it.

When Azriel faced her and said she had better things to do than to babysit him, the officer laughed softly. Her dark brown eyes lit up, in a humorous way. "I feel generous today", she stated, looking back into Azriel's eyes.

"Yes, I am indeed aware that this is Section Nine. And I am also aware that there are many other officers at this very area. So, I am all yours for a while". The young woman resumed her pace patiently. Walking slowly, inviting Azriel to keep moving, se kept talking. "It depends on who this someone is. You are special, 'darling', and I want you to be escorted so we can be sure nobody is going to rob you". The officer laughed softly. "Section Nine is a dangerous place, after all".

“Perhaps it is,” Azriel said in agreement when she commented about Section Nine. Dealing with a bored cop was worse than one looking to fill their quota, but at least she had a sense of humor. Humor was, admittedly, something he lacked however he appreciated whenever he came across someone with such wit. “But… I have found that it is only dangerous if you allow it to be.” That was true, at least from his perspective. He’s lived here all of his life and has only had a few rough encounters.

“I doubt anybody will rob me,” he said calmly. He dared someone to try and rob him. Regardless of the fact he had an officer at his heels, they would regret the attempt almost as soon as they even got the thought in their head.

After a bit of walking, they passed by a few places that Azriel liked to visit whenever he wasn’t doing much. Unfortunately, he really couldn’t with an officer so he just kept moving. He kept his gaze forward, just in case someone who knew him was skulking about. He was not always the most social of people but that didn’t mean he didn’t have a crowd he frequented. They were a bit shady, true, but they gave him work.

Azriel suddenly stopped and turned on his heels, heading down another street, back towards home. “Our walk will be over shortly,” he said over his shoulder. Since he couldn’t do much today, not that he really had anything in mind, and since his hangover hadn’t subsided yet and he was still feeling like he was falling through the ground, he figured he might as well just go back home. Not to mention the feeling of falling through the ground was a good enough reason to want to go home either way.

"You know it is. Maybe in different levels for you and me", the officer replied. She knew nobody at all was safe on Section Nine, but the levels and kinds of danger were different for each kind of people. For her kind, the danger laid in violent criminals. As trained and intelligent (most of) the officers were, they were still humans. For people like Azriel, it was a whole different kind of danger. The danger, for his kind, laid in rivalry. Or, in a more subtle way, loose lips.

Loose lips, for the officers, were a blessing, though. It made them not have to run around looking for clues about this or that person. A few drinks given to the right person, and they had some really juicy news. Who cared it was illegal? The job had to be done, after all.

All these thoughts flew off the officer's mind when Azriel stopped walking. Evidently, the young woman turned on her heels and started following the man. "Say what?", she asked, blinking a few times in surprise. "I really, really don't think so", the officer completed.

"I'm a little bit unsure if you have heard me, but I had informed you and the piece of tin that I will be taking care of the legal procedure. And trust me, I have no intention to do it in your house. So, how about you kindly cooperate with me?"

The officer showed her best smile. "I wouldn't want to have to make your life harder to get you to sit down for a chat with me".

If his temper hadn’t been tried before, Azriel was beginning to slowly lose his patience. Like before, his lips had formed a thin line, he exhaled softly, and he said, “I am already cooperating, am I not? I could have… run off as soon as I was free from that drone.” It usually took a lot to get under his skin. He was not the post patient person in the world, but he was usually calm and composed. The way he was feeling now made him a bit more irritable than usual.

“Unless going for a morning walk is a crime, I am not doing anything wrong,” he continued. “It is not my fault these drones are… unreliable.” He decided that was the nicest word he could think of. As much as he wanted to tell her off, he was also kind of curious. Now that he was thinking about it, he was sure there was another reason for her to want to go through the legal procedure. It could just be in his head but he couldn’t help but wonder.

Azriel eventually let out a heavy sigh, “Whatever legal procedures you must go through had better not take long.” Of course, Azriel thought, he could just tell her off instead of going through with this bullshit. But not only would that give her a reason to make him think he was hiding something, he would rather not be seen being dragged away in handcuffs. It was better to just cooperate, cooperate and let his curiosity take over for a bit.

It wasn't a hard thing to get Alice's temper going. But right now, she was really amused. Seeing someone usually calm starting to lose it was always entertaining. And of course, people were usually prone to talking more than they should under conditions of stress. And that was exactly what she was going for with Azriel.

"No, going for a walk is not a crime. But being above the legal limit is", the officer replied gently. "Also, the drones are pretty reliable. They find someone breaking the law and alert the closest station. That's what they are programmed to do, and that's what they do". Sure, deep down inside Officer Green did not believe her own words. Those pieces of tin had zero ability to judge the necessity of actually alerting an officer. But protocol had to be followed, after all.

And, there was always the chance of getting a little something new out of Azriel on their way to the station or in the station itself.

"Grumpy today, are we?", the officer joked when Azriel said whatever legal procedure she had to go through had better not take long. "If you behave, it will be really fast. In and out", the officer completed. "You sit down, you give me your basic information, we talk a little bit about your alcoholic shenanigans, and you can go home and sleep it off. Can't get any easier than that, now can it?"

Cops.

“Naturally,” Azriel said softly when she finished explaining the procedure. He really hoped they wouldn’t take long. Being cooped up for a long time did not sit well with him, which was why he was out here, as he’d briefly mentioned. But course knowing his luck that would be just what the officer would want, his discomfort.

“Whatever you ask me, know that stand by what I have already said, officer. I realize you will… think whatever you want, but I pride myself in being an honest man,” he added. Above the legal limit… what a ****ing ridiculous excuse. Maybe she really was just trying to fill her quota. Honestly, it really wasn’t like he was up to anything. If he was up to something, he’d have brought his gun with him. It was tempting to bring that up.

Cops… He was sure she would have gotten a kick out of that.

But despite his thoughts, Azriel didn’t say anything more. He knew better than to say anything like that anyway. Until they got there, and got this whole ‘procedure’ bullshit over with, he saw no reason for further conversation. It was clear she wasn’t going to budge, and he saw no reason to waste his breath any more than he already has. This would more than likely do more harm than good, but he didn’t really care.

This has been a long day and it hasn’t even hit noon yet.

The officer nodded when Azriel said that 'naturally'. It was interesting to see how they reacted when taken in for questioning. The effect on their nerves was sometimes worse than when they were being openly arrested. When they were arrested, at least they knew where they stood, as with questioning anything could happen. But Officer Green wasn't looking to make an arrest, not yet, at least. Some people were more valuable out there.

"An honest man. That's rarer than most wildlife nowadays. You must be a fascinating specimen", Alice replied. A smile played on her lips for a while before it disappeared.

Respecting Azriel's silence, the officer also kept quiet until they reached the district. Greeting a few flesh and bone officers there, Alice ignored the pieces of tin. "Arrest, Officer?", one of them questioned. "No. Questioning only. No arrests will be made", she replied, before gesturing for Azriel to follow.

She would take him to a small office, instead of an interrogation room. "Can I offer you a cup of coffee before we start our friendly chat?". While she finished speaking, Alice already moved to get the coffee maker going. "As annoying as this is, you will be home soon".

Taking up the offer of coffee was tempting. However, Azriel wasn’t really too keen to accept, “No thank you.” It was nice to see that they were not in an interrogation room. He had been expecting it, honestly, and he actually appreciated the small gesture of hospitality. If it could even be called ‘hospitality’. Truth be told, he didn’t see this as a reason to not feel uncomfortable, and still slightly annoyed, about being here in the first place.

He took the seat across from the officer. “Is that so? Well then, I will be… holding you to your word that this will not take very long. From one honest person to another,” he said with a small note of sarcasm in his tone. “Ask me whatever you want,” he added. A question he’d regret, he was sure. There was a good chance that the officer would find any reason to keep him here longer.

A lot of cops were the kind of people who would play dirty to get their way.

Azriel would need to play his cards right to ensure he didn’t get caught in that trap. He took on the demeanor he usually used whenever he was dealing with someone who had requested his services, sitting straight and attentive. Business-like. Playing his cards right was the key here. Despite his annoyance, he had no reason to disrespect her after all. Not to mention he was a man who had nothing to hide.

"Oh, well... You look like you need a cup of coffee. Suit yourself", the officer replied. She poured a cup for herself and sweetened it, before moving back to the desk and sitting down. Taking a long sip, the young woman sighed, murmuring something like 'delicious'.

The officer raised an eyebrow when Azriel said he would hold her to her word. A smile showed on her face when he said 'from one honest person to another'. "Nothing but honesty in this room", she replied, a subtle irony intonation in her voice.

With another smile, the officer sat back and relaxed. "You look like a school kid about to take a test. Relax. I said I will not arrest you, and I will not". Sipping the coffee, the officer stopped the banter. It was a subtle change in her posture and intonation, but she was all business now.

"I'm not interested in you, right now. I'm interested in your friends. Or whatever you happen to call them", she stated. "Some of my people are being harmed around here, and I don't like that". Before he could even say anything, the officer raised her hand. "I don't think you have anything to do with this. You don't strike me as the violent kind".

She was being honest. She knew full well who represented physical danger for the officers and who didn't. And she knew Azriel wasn't dangerous in that way. "When they come to their senses, they are stripped of their weapons and id. Which means someone around here is dealing in those. Well, now I ask my questions, and I want the answers. Three answers, and you're out of here".

The officer paused, as to let her words sink in. "Are you dealing in either weapons or ids? If not, do you know who is? If you don't, do you think you can find out?".

Ah, so the truth was finally out. She did have a reason to bring him in; their encounter was not just a coincidence, brought on by some defective drone.

Azriel’s lips formed a sort of amused grin, “Officers have been attacked you say?” This little chat was turning out to be a lot more rewarding than he expected. It was no laughing matter that cops were being killed. As far as he was concerned, anyone who had a big enough head, thinking they were smooth enough to take out a few cops and walk away, should get what was coming to them. People like that posed a threat.

He considered taking them out on his own. It wouldn’t be hard… But for now, that was just at thought in the back of his mind.

Azriel leaned forward a little, one arm on the desk, “I have to say, you present a very… interesting proposition.” He looked a little skeptical, which he was, but it was clear he was curious to hear more. This whole thing was very interesting. “I do not involve myself in weapons dealings, I assure you.” He nodded as if to confirm that. Dealing in illegal weapon trades was not his thing.

“I might know who could be involved,” Azriel continued. “Finding them would not be a problem. I will need at least a week to find out whether my suspicions are true.” He briefly wondered if the officer would think it was suspicious that he was so willing to give names. More importantly, he wondered what the catch was. She had said she wasn’t interested in him ‘right now’. There had to be something more…

Regardless, truth be told, he was no rat but he didn’t mind giving names. Especially if they violate the code that was in place. It wasn’t like they meant much to him, or that he really got involved with their dealings, he was just called in to take care of someone and he did it.
