The world was simply called Chaos. It was a figment of imagination and yet as real and unseen as the air itself, and it is here that Nightmares are born.

You could say that Aer was slightly odd. Aside from his name, he was not in the slightest bit scary. He was scrawny and short and timid, and least frightening of all was the fact that he had a pair of floppy puppy ears perched atop his head as well as a fluffy tail to accompany them. He wore a striped shirt that closely resembled a prison jumper and black jeans that were ripped at the knees. He also preferred sneakers that were much too large for his feet and often let his black, shaggy hair hang over his right eye. His left eye was a bright gold, while the right was a bright blue. However, despite these inconsistencies, he created a great legend. This legend, however, has yet to be written.

Aer lived in a small town called Banshee. Just as the name suggests, the town was haunted by a distraught soul and whenever she was heard screaming from the hills, whoever heard her often experienced a loved one's death within the hour. Unless, of course, they were without loved ones or their closer counterparts were already deceased.
Banshee was decorated with dead trees and decaying buildings. The sun had never touched this town and never will. The dirt was stained purple and blue from the midnight darkness. Two moons hung in perfect sight in the sky, one blood red and the other a dull yellow. Dark clouds hung low in the sky, threatening rain that will never fall.

The neighborhood wolfman howls and from the tallest building, the Bell Tower, the ringing of the bells is sounded, signaling the arrival of the Witching Hour.
A shrill woman's scream from his alarm clock woke Aer from his deep slumber. He had always hated that sound, not only for how annoying it was, but just because of the fact that he didn't care to scare others, even if he was able to.
After successfully denting his wall with the now cracked-in-half alarm clock, he rolled out of bed and onto the floor, where he dragged himself across the floor to his massive pile of clothes. He was not a night owl.
The large pile of clothes before him consisted of both clean and dirty clothes, and save for the dirt-stained ones, he couldn't tell which was which. After wading through several straight jackets as well as both striped and orange prison jumpers, he settled on his favorite outfit, a plain striped black and white prison shirt with his name stitched into the pocket in blue letters and his favorite pair of black jeans that were ripped at the knees. He finally lifted himself off the floor and stumbled out the door into the cold night air.
The full red moon shined down over the town as Aer made his way slowly down the long, winding dirt path. The ominous trees loomed over him with their dangling limbs, poised to attack.
Suddenly, the bushes rustle behind Aer, although he is too busy daydreaming to notice. A girl bursts out of the bushes, pouncing on Aer and knocking him down. He promptly freaks out and lets out a high-pitched scream. The girl giggles and sits on Aer's back, not letting him get up.
Her light purple skin is a maroon hue due to the moonlight, and her jet black hair is pulled into two short pigtails. She is wearing a green dress that falls just short of her knees and looks to be about twelve. Her yellow cat-like eyes are squinted from her laughter.
"You're such a scaredy cat!" She chuckles.
"Lia! I told you not to sneak up on me like that!" Aer said pitifully, feigning a struggle as he eventually pushed Lia off his back.
"But it's sooooo fun!" She twirls a bit, showing her excitement. She skipped a few feet ahead of him, whistling what would normally be an ominous tune.
"Not for me it's not." Aer grumbled, following her.

Aer and Lia enter the town square, a small, sparse area lined with old wooden houses and shops. Large, flat stones make up the pathways and a grand, eerie fountain sat in the middle. It depicts a large rat-like creature with a monocle and a top hat standing confidently upon the large post. Its cold stone eyes seems to stare through the soul of anyone who enters the space. Aer avoided eye contact with the creepy statue and lead Lia to an area outside of the statue's vision.
They stop in front of the largest building, the Bell Tower. Someone can be seen at the top cleaning one of the bells, but neither Lia nor Aer acknowledged the figure.
"Not very much to do around here, is there?" Lia asked, sighing.
Aer yawned. "Not usually, no."
A ghoul abruptly pushes past them, running toward the outskirts of the small town. Commotion can be heard from the outskirts, prompting Aer and Lia to investigate.
As they trotted down the lengthy downhill pathway, they noticed a huge group gathered outside one of the gigantic haunted mansions that even the scariest of townfolk did not even dare to enter. The great structure was four stories tall, not counting the multiple levels of basements. All of the windows were cracked, broken, and dusty and torn, faded red curtains still blew from the breeze traveling into the windows. The front door creaked as it slowly crawled back and forth in the wind.
"What happened here?" Lia asked the closest townsperson.
The tall, lanky vampire turned around to face her. "That old crazy geezer McMilligan stole a precious stone from the Mayor, then escaped by running in there." The vampire answered, pointing towards the grand structure. "But no one's brave enough to follow him."
Lia's face lit up at the sound of a challenge. "Come on, Aer! Let's see if we can get a better look!"
Aer allows her to grudgingly pull him along behind her through the crowd. They make it up to the front doors where the Mayor is standing, peeking into the doorway.
The Mayor is a towering, gaunt figure standing about ten feet tall, wearing a two-foot tall top hat that makes him seem even taller. His pale skin indicated that he was Undead, however he did not necessarily resemble an average Ghoul, so to most of everyone it was a mystery as to what he really was.
"Children, it's not safe here." He said to them, not bothering to look in their direction.
"But we wanna help!" Lia said pleadingly. A few seconds passed before she punches Aer in the shoulder to help her out.
"Yeah, we want to do everything in our power." Aer said dryly, not liking where this is going.
"And what exactly is in your power?" The Mayor retorted, actually turning to face them and standing up straight, towering over them. "You're just kids. I would prefer you leave." He pushed them with his cane, which he had grabbed from its resting place on the wall of the building.
"Wait! We'll go in there and get the stone back for you!" Lia exclaimed. Her proposal was only met with a chuckle.
"Children like you can do nothing." The Mayor replied.
"Me and Aer can get more done than everyone out here, standing around!" Lia argued.
"Inaction produces the same result as incapability, does it not?" Aer defended his friend, who was slowly beginning to throw a hissy fit.
The Mayor took a few seconds, then finally sighed and rubbed his eyes in frustration. "Fine, but I'm sending someone with you. Klai, earlier, weren't you insisting in following him in?" The Mayor asked a tall boy in the crowd, who stepped forward. He was still made of flesh and bones. However, his arms were stained and burned purple, the sign of a young Necromancer. He looked about eighteen and stood roughly a foot taller than Aer. His hair was a pure white and bandages covered his right eye, the purple showing under indicated a mistake he had made. His left eye was a bright but lifeless blue.
Klai nodded in response, but said nothing.
"Safety in numbers. I'd feel better if there were more of you, but I don't believe that's possible without this turning deadly." The Mayor instructed. "Don't get separated and don't let McMilligan see you, he's gone crazy and might harm you."
With that, Lia planted a large smile on her face and led them into the mansion.
