When you think about superheroes and villains, you think about fame, failure, good versus evil, flashy latex, super powers and whatever else has been flashing on most channels when flipping through channels. Smaller heroes and villains, who did this because they had to, didn't come to mind.

Superpowers were treated like any other talent. There was an obligation to use them: A duty to the public, to the city, to yourself. And there was no escape from that if you possessed anything that the common human didn’t.
That being said, of course there were people who went out of their way to become heroes or villains without the help of superpowers. But of course without money, and the education or physical prowess behind it, that would remain a dream.

Then there were people like Lee who did what they had to do in order to get bread on the table and a roof over their head. Of course there were lots of them, less heroes as it was only profitable the more famous you got). With villainy it was easier to get money and comfort if your morals were more flexible and you decided to risk getting tangled up with people way above what you're capable or willing to do.

That's why Lee did things the way he did. He teamed up with No one. He never robbed or stole from anything that would give him too much attention, and he would absolutely refrain from using his powers unless absolutely necessary.
Having certain powers was like a birthmark at some point. It was a giveaway of who you were, and having it traced back to you was less than ideal with an occupation like his. So petty crimes and stealing from those whom already had too much been the way he was able to afford staying where he was.

A large soup mug sat in his lap as he flipped through the channels, stopping on one news channel showing something a little too familiar.
A millionaire's home had been broken into, and a few expensive but replaceable items have been stolen.

"There was no visible break in, the culprit stole multiple expensive Japanese vases each worth a couple thousand dollars and another couple thousand dollars from McHydal's safe. No jewelry, technology, or blue prints were taken, however." The reporter with the bright pink tie said, her expression blank and automatic.

"The culprit wasn't an ambitious one. There was jewelry worth twice as much as what they stole all together that was left untouched. There is also no evidence that they had any sort of abilities to aid in their break-in. The only documented criminal who could do something in this style has been in prison for the last 7 years."

Lee slumped into the couch, curling his hands around the soup mug, and looked down at his food instead, deciding that instead of worrying about them tracking him down-they couldn't, he made sure-he was going to devour the last few bites of his cereal and get dressed.
His roommate was out for the morning, so he didn't feel the need to leave the living room in a hurry. He still had a few pieces left to sell and he personally wanted to get them off his hands as soon as possible yet without painting a target sign on his back. Having illegally obtained items in his garage was not something that let him sleep easy. He was going to wait a few months until this died down and then sell them.

Ten minute shower and a change of clothes later, he was heading out.

Since he was a kid Ezra had always idolized the superheroes he saw on tv, on the front page of the morning paper, that everyone talked about at school. There were the big capes, the ones everyone knew about, knew all their power sets, their skills, heck, even their stats! Of course there were the lesser known ones as well, but unless they did something spectacular to get them in the headlines, no one paid them much mind. And as a kid, Ezra had always daydreamed about being one of those heroes. Saving the day, being the saviour of the city, everyone knowing his name. He would spend his time at recess or after school playing with his friends and acting out these fantasies. Some took the role of the villains, others, the heroes that stopped crime in its tracks.

His parents were never too supportive of this, always telling him he should be doing something productive with his time, like studying. Big shots themselves in the business and law firm worlds, Ezra’s parents both believed their boy was destined for greatness, just not with a cape. His father would love to have him go to the same law school he did and work at the firm with him. His mother was a business tycoon always on the hunt for bigger and brighter opportunities, and never missed the chance to try and edge her son towards that. But Ezra was a dreamer. He didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk, or arguing numbers with some old guys in pressed suits. He had other dreams that didn’t quite line up with what his family dreamed.

And one day that dream wasn’t just a dream anymore.

He had powers. He had freaking powers! They manifested when he was a teenager (what a way to hit puberty), and his parents were far from thrilled. He had to keep them under wraps, pretend to be a normal guy, hold himself back in sports, and not let anyone catch on that he was one of those individuals. College came and went, Ezra bounced between majors with nothing really catching his eye. Then one day, a day he remembers well and loves to retell when anyone asks, he saved someone and his career as a hero officially began.

He was the hotshot, the new blood, and he was making a name for himself.

~~~
“Mr. Bentam! Who do you think is behind the recent break ins at the McHydal estate?”
“Surely you’ll be there to stop the crook if he tries this again.”
“Do you think this is someone you’ve dealt with before?”
“Mr. Bentam!”
Ezra’s ears were ringing as he pushed his way through the crowd of reporters who had gathered around the building almost as soon as the report had been made. He had inherited the law firm when his father had passed, and despite having no background in the field, Ezra still made sure things were running more or less in the right direction. Most days that was all fine and good, until things like this happened and his worlds collided a little more forcefully than he would have liked.
He managed to get to the car before any of them could get between him and the door, the chauffeur waiting to leave the moment the door was closed and the guard gave him the go ahead. Ezra didn’t need the guards, he was quite capable of looking after himself, but it was part of the package of the rich and famous and who was he to argue with that?
“I swear they get crazier every time.” Ezra said, watching the reporters still flocked around the building through the tinted windows.
“Fame always comes with a price, sir.” Monty, his chauffeur answered, glancing into the rearview mirror as he pulled into the traffic already congesting the streets.
“You’re telling me.” Ezra muttered, loosening his tie as he leaned back in the seat.
He was more or less an amateur when it came to things like identifying whether or not something was valuable, and how valuable. For him, the fact that the McHydal family ending up on the news about their break-in and the reporter on that case being absolutely unenthusiastic about the case showed that the items he took weren't too valuable. This would blow over in a month.
Climbing into the bus, he sat down in the back, pushed in the earbuds.
Ten minutes later he was standing in front of a small convenience shop, or rather what looked to be like one.
When you steal and sell expensive vases and pieces like that, you need to have someone who would examine and price the items you have, no questions of origin asked.
And Auntie Mint was that lady for him.
She was an elder lady with a fake wooden leg, and a small angry dog that did nothing but scare away customers and bark its ass off to anyone and everyone until they bought something. It was like a really annoying alarm, except a lot more effective. Lee should have been more or less used to it but it still made him anxious as hell ever time he entered the pawn shop.
Auntie Mint was sitting behind the counter, the small Pomeranian sitting on a big velvet pillow, and eating Chinese take out. She looked up from her phone from the nail tutorial she liked to play on blast no matter if customers were present or not.
"Bathroom is for customers only" She said not looking up from her phone.
"Uh, right." Lee cleared his throat and went throughout the aisles and picked out a box of fruit tea, some weird snacks that had Cyrillic on the front and toothpaste?
Okay that'll do.
Placing the merchandise on the counter, Lee cleared his throat and waited until she finally paused the video.
"I got some **** you might wanna have a look at." Lee said, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "I just want you to have a look at them."
Auntie Mint nodded, prodded her large red glasses up her nose and handed him the paper bag with his items.
She hopped off the stool and moved to the backdoor; Lee followed, ducking so his forehead wouldn't hit the frame of the door.
He handed her his phone, and crossed his arms, gently tapping his finger against his forearm.
She grunted in annoyance. He knew Auntie Mint only liked to handle what people brought in physically, but he was a smaller customer and with less resources so carrying around expensive jewelry and vases and other stuff rich people bought would put him in unsafe conditions, but thankfully Auntie understood that, and did price items at an approximation by pictures as well. It had the risk of her not buying some items because the merchandise wasn't up to par upon physical inspection, but it was better than nothing.
"Good work, they seem sellable.. uh, but.."
Lee's swallowed. "Buts" were usually not a good sign with Auntie Mint.
"This ring over here, I wanna take a closer inspection if you don't mind." He frowned but nodded, took his bought items, and left.
What Lee didn't realize was that the ring he had stolen was a lot more priceless than originally thought.
The ring was a family heirloom, one that the McHydal family kept safe with their very lives. It was something of a symbol of their power and status in the underground world and specifically their founding fathers of a secret society.
Of course a long time family of billionaires would get enveloped in something like this. Money and good luck was attributed to their rituals that their society for the rich elite members of society did monthly. And without that ring, they were in danger of having their luck plummet.
Johnathan McHydal gulped down the aged whiskey and placed down the shot glass, looking up towards the doors. He had a meeting with villains and superheros alike, and twisted the story the way that would make them most likely get what was needed. Money and special permission to villains, and fame and a fake sob story to the superheroes.
This time he was meeting with someone he didn't know but it was better to cover all of his bases before sitting down, getting drunk and waiting until the precious ring was brought back.
Ezra had only closed his eyes for a few seconds, or so he had thought. At some point he must have dozed off, something that wasn’t all that uncommon for him. Evildoers and bad guys didn’t exactly schedule their schemes at his convenience or work only during a set number of hours. No, Ezra had to be ready to go at any time, be it in the middle of a big corporate meeting, or in the middle of the night.
Sometimes he was lucky and the call came when he wasn’t in the middle of something, letting him change into the suit and go save the day without a hitch. Other times the man was had spent the better part of the night enjoying a party, maybe had one or two too many drinks, and on occasion had a pretty lady on one arm when he was forced to play the role of hero again. It was moments like this where the billionaire wished he had never gotten the damn powers, but then he realized how much more boring his life would have been and it all doesn’t seem too bad anymore.
Waking with a start, Ezra leaned forward to look out the front window.
“What’s going on?” He asked, noticing a lineup of cars blocking practically the entire street.
“I believe an accident.” Monty answered, almost bored as his fingers drummed on the steering wheel.
“Natural or villain?” Ezra asked, not really wanting to know the answer as his phone went off. Pulling the device from his pocket, he didn’t recognize the number, choosing to let it go to voicemail rather than answer it and end up either a) on the line with some agent whom he would need to redirect to someone else in the firm, b) with some chick he had hooked up with at some point, or c) some creepy voice manipulated psycho causing chaos in the downtown and calling to mock him. All three options seemed equally unappealing.
Tossing the phone onto the seat next to him as the call went through to voicemail, Ezra glanced out the window. It wasn’t the ritzy part of the city he was used to. Instead the streets were lined with small convenience stores and other seedy looking places, greasy pizzerias, dirty sidewalks, and probably a million other problems just below the surface of it all. He hoped the traffic would clear soon so they could get out of here. Despite the windows being bulletproof, there was no telling what might happen in a world where superheroes and villains were a reality.
The few honks and car alarms pulled him out of his head. Looking over his shoulder Lee could see a few large humanoid figures shoving past civilians and ran into traffic. Seconds later, another figure jumped straight down behind them, landing heavily onto a taxi, barely missing the driver inside. The crack was deafening, and his senses went crazy, telling him to run the hell away from the creature, or rather the taxi that was currently was shoved out of the 2nd humanoid's way and right into the crowd, one where he was in front of.
His senses screamed for him to move, and the moment his muscles tensed, ready to jump back and out of the way, a shadow settled over him. His body froze knowing that if he did anything that was even slightly out of the ordinary he'd be put on some ****ing watchlist he really wasn't ready to be a part of. He finally placed some attention over the person standing between him and the car. The person was visibly human, and for a second he thought it was someone strangely enough was stupid, or suicidal enough to move between a stranger and a thrown car.
But he was in the world where superheroes were the norm. Lee's grip on the messenger bag strap over his shoulder tightened.
He needed to remember that most people didn't have powers. And he needed to act accordingly.
Lee's eyes widened and he stepped back, more or less taking the role of a civilian.
When did things ever go the way he wanted? Glancing out the front window at the sound of screaming, Ezra’s eyes had widened at the sight of what appeared to be a few vaguely humanoid creatures. He had been hoping something like this wouldn’t happen, that this would just be the result of some reckless driver, perfectly normal everyday occurrence. When that wasn’t the case, his next thought was that maybe another caped crusader would jump in and save the day. No such luck.
Ezra had to make a split second decision when the taxi was sent barreling at a crowd of civilians.
“Monty, don’t wait up.” He said, shooting a grin to the man behind the wheel as he opened the door and stepped out. One good thing about heroes being so commonplace was that he didn’t have to pull the whole ‘let me slip into this alley to change into my super suit’. He had gotten into the habit of wearing the suit under his usual suit. Made for easy changing and came in handy on days like this when everything went sideways just like that. Navy and gold were his colours, they were his family colours so it was almost natural to have chosen them.
Getting between the taxi and the civilians, Ezra braced for impact. The metal bent under his hands as it hit, creaks adding to Ezra’s own groans as he took the hit. The taxi fell back on its wheels and he sent a quick glance over his shoulder at the shocked civilians.
“Everyone okay?” He asked before his attention was once more drawn to the creatures.
He, and an elderly woman were the only ones who had frozen upon having a taxi thrown at them, which of course made it much easier for the superhero between them and the hunk of metal to react and keep minimum damage. He nodded quickly, turning his head over to the elderly lady who had already moved to safety leaving him and the superhero.
Wait... he just stumbled upon an opportunity to get a little bit of income, which thankfully would insure his apartment to stay accessible for a while longer. Lee pulled out his phone and snapped a few pictures of the scene, almost automatically. No journalist or newscasts were on the scene and companies would definitely pay for the photos he'd get in order to make any news out of this.
"Oh uh, thank you," He said, realizing that the superhero in front of him was still present, and snapped a picture of him as well.
The large humanoid figures that had caused the scene however, fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of broken cars and screaming civilians.
Getting more information about this, more pictures and so on would definitely put a bit more money in his wallet, so of course he decided to suit up and follow the action, get some pictures, sell them, or whatever else he needed.
"I think they're heading for Main st." He yelled pointing towards the trail. As soon as the superhero would leave, he'd follow.
There were only two people left, the rest having scattered when the car had come flying. The older woman had already moved, leaving Ezra with just one younger man. The hero’s attention shifted once more to the creatures before returning to the civilian. He caught the nod, and was about to move on when the movement of a phone being pulled out caught his eye.
Of course, people always wanted photos of the heroes in action. More often than not those doing the photography, news reporters and casual civilians alike, just got in the way more than anything and made themselves another worry for the hero at the scene.
“It’s all part of the position.” Ezra gave as a reply to the thank you, flashing a quick smile at the phone’s camera before changing directions based on what had just been yelled.
“Let’s hope I can stop them before they get that far. Gonna have more than a few late meetings rides home if this keeps up.” Taking off, Ezra followed the creatures. He didn’t know where they had come from, or even what they were. All he did know was that they meant harm and he had to stop them. Briefly he wondered where the other heroes were, the city was usually crawling with them, but now, when it would have been great to have more caped crusaders around, none to be seen.
Using his strength to lift a lamp post from the ground, Ezra used it like a bat as he swung at the back of the nearest creature, drawing attention to himself rather than the screaming people as the creatures approached. He needed some sort of crowd control, to get all the people out instead of just screaming and pointing.
“Hey!” Ezra called to the guy from before, the one with the phone. “Think you could direct these people away?” He asked, nodding his head towards the panicked civilians.
He had planned to take off right after the hero left, and maybe see what was going on with all that. To be fair, while money was a big motivator for him in opportunities like these, he also was curious. Who wouldn't be? A few monstrously big and powerful creatures going berserk in town square. Who wouldn't be interested?
He was ready to go after them, maybe find a dark place to put on his suit and follow them. Being able to bend metal and such came to use, and in a metal city, he'd quickly catch up to the group of creatures and the hero. If not for opportunities with a few journalists, perhaps to sate his own curiosity.
His thoughts were interrupted by the hero who had been speaking to him.. at him? He hadn't been paying attention. Yeah.. he tended to not do that when environments around him were too much, too stimulating.
"Uh... They're already leaving." Lee said awkwardly. He wasn't .. wrong, but they sure as hell would benefit from some guidance, something he personally wasn't capable of when everything was a bit much in terms of auditory stimulation.
That wasn't part of his superpowers, though he wished it could have been explained by something cool. In reality being in huge crowded areas made him deeply anxious and noise and people and loud creaking metal was too much right now.
It hadn’t gone unnoticed that the majority of the crowd had dispersed, scattering in every possible direction and stirring up more confusion as they went. The man whom Ezra had singled out made a comment on this, earning a nod from the hero. Ezra didn’t have long to linger though as the nearest creature advanced, not having taken a lamp post to the back of the head well.
“Look, just get yourself someplace safe. Alright?” He called back to the man, already leaping towards the creature, his arms outstretched as he collided with the thing. The sound was deafening as the two met, a loud crack echoed against the concrete and steel that surrounded them. Ezra gritted his teeth as his hands dug in where they could, his feet planted but sliding back quickly with the force of the creature.
He could still hear people all around, some stopping to watch the fight, while others still attempted to flee in terror. The streets were clogged with abandoned vehicles but the creature wasn’t daunted, ploughing through them with Ezra caught in the middle. He couldn’t see around the thing to locate the others which was reason enough for alarm.
Shifting, Ezra drove his shoulder into the creature, pulling a groan from the thing as the hero used the momentary pause in its advancement to change the center of balance. Throwing his arms around the creature’s neck, Ezra swung his full weight to the side, pulling the mass with him as they crashed into the side of a large van. The creaks and pops from the metal only added to the noise, but Ezra was too occupied with his current task. Pulling himself out from under the downed thing, he ripped off a large chunk of torn metal and proceeded to run and leap across the tops of the cars to follow where the others went.
He only hoped they would be as easy to take out as the first had been, if it was even down for good.
