Madyline huddled against the cold stone walls, shivering spastically. It was almost pitch black; the only light coming from a narrow window in the hall. The weak moonlight filtered through the bars of the cell she was held in. She tugged tugged her thin skirt down to cover her bear feet, and glanced across the hall, towards the huddled form in the other cell. They'd both been brought here at the same time, the mob whipped into a frenzy by accusations of witches among them. Madyline herself wound up with a busted lip and a bruise stretched across her cheek because she'd fought back.

"Hey," she called quietly across the hall. "Are you alright?"

Mary scanned the letter in her hand once more, her blue eyes cold as she took in the details. A concerned anonymous citizen had reached out when two young people from the town had been accused. It was only a couple hours of travel from their current location; if they left now they could be there by dawn. She shook her partner awake, already throwing her belongings into her bag.

"We have a job," she told him as she snapped her bag closed. "We have to go".

Phineas sat with his back against the cold stone, his knees drawn up, and his arms held close and crossed, each hand gripping at the opposite elbow. His pant legs drew up to mid shin, leaving his lower legs and feet bear to the cool air.

One of his eyes had been blacken in the fight that had broke out, and he was lucky his nose hadn’t been broken with the way the fist had connected with it. Blood had dried on his face where it had dripped. His head down, Phineas heard the voice calling to him, the girl, the one who had been brought in with him.

Swiping a few strands of hair from his face, he glanced in her direction.

“Fine.” He answered, shifting a little to rest his chin on his knees, wrapping his arms around them. “Yourself?” It didn’t really matter, there wasn’t much, or rather anything he could do about it, but there was no telling how long they would be in here. There was no getting out of this as far as he could tell, the whole village was out for their blood!

Nathan woke slowly, blinking his brown eyes a few times before moving to sit up. One hand moved to scrub at his face, as he yawned. His large frame snapped and cracked as he moved, rolling his shoulders with a pop, and he groaned.

“Where to this time?” He asked, watching Mary for a moment before standing. “We just got back.” Nathan grumbled, already shoving a few things into his own bag. The tall man snapped it shut, dropping it beside the door as he stooped to pick up his boots.

“What’s it say?” He nodded to the letter.

((Oh jeez! I thought my reply posted, I apologize.))

Madyline twisted and untwisted a long red curl in her fingers, an anxious tick. "Why are we here?" She looked towards the window again. "What do they want with us here? I am no one." In her anxious state her accent, normally hidden behind "proper" talk, was coming out once more. The thick accent alluded to Irish roots.

"Will they just leave us here?" Her eyes dropped, and she spotted a long thread hanging off of her skirt. She twisted it in her hands and snapped the thread, weaving it between her fingers. She looped it twice around her wrist, then unwound it once more. Her hands were constantly moving.

Mary handed him the paper as she slung her bag over her shoulder and stepped into the chilly air. She made her way to the stables, where their mounts dozed. "A pair of young people were accused, they're being held in the jail, and tomorrow at midday the elders decide what manner of test they will be subjected to." Disdain twisted the word in her mouth. They weren't tests, just excuses to torture.

She pulled the stable doors open and clucked to her mare, a chestnut with white socks and mane. "Come, sweeness." She cooed. "We have work to do." The horse snorted at her, annoyed by the interruption of her sleep, but rested her large head on Mary's shoulder and lipped at her sleeve.

He hadn’t really been expecting the amount of worry and fear that came from the girl, but here it was. Watching her carefully, Phineas considered how much he should say, if he should even try to answer her questions. They had both been brought in at the same time, so there was no hiding why they were here, at least according to the village. But the following questions were pressing heavily on his mind. Phineas hugged his knees tighter, pressing his forehead to the tops of them and letting out a deep sigh.

“Think you know why we’re here, whole village thinks we’re witches.” He said, lifting his head once more, briefly glancing to the window as well. “They’re scared, think we’ll hex them or something.” Phineas rolled his eyes, wincing a little at the movement. He had heard stories about what had happened to others accused of being witches, none of them pretty, he couldn’t tell her though. If she truly didn’t know, there was no sense in scaring her more, right?

“Hard to say.” He said, looking to the stone walls. “But it’s probably better than any alternative. I’m Phineas by the way, or Phin.” He wasn’t sure why he added that last part, maybe just to provide something other than the doom and gloom of the whole situation?

Pulling on his boots Nathan took the paper from Mary, scanning over the contents as he slung his bag over his shoulder and followed her out, pulling his cloak a little closer at the chill. Hearing her words, Nathan could only shake his head and hold back the string of swears that came to his lips.

“Guess we’ve got our work cut out for us. Though you’d think someone would have enough brains to see how wrong this is by now.” Following Mary’s lead, Nathan approached his own moody mount, a blue roan with black splashed across the face, and matching mane. A stomped hoof and shaking of its head caused Nathan to chuckle.

“You and me both.” He laughed, running a hand across the horse’s neck. Turning to Mary, he asked, “Got everything?”
