The number of times Steve had tried to enlist in the army was either a show of great pride for his country, or a serious act of stupidity. Anyone who looked at the 95lb, just barely pushing 5' 4", asthmatic kid from Brooklyn would never have thought he stood a chance of being accepted into the army, let alone chosen for Project Rebirth! And still, time and time again, and countless forgeries of papers to make him look even a little better in the eyes of the men at the recruitment station always came to the same conclusion. Steven Grant Rogers just wasn't meant for the army. He would complain to his best friend Bucky whenever he got the chance, telling him that he wanted nothing more than to help out his country in some way. And thankfully, that some way soon came.

They had been at the Stark Expo, Bucky had gone off with some girls - not that they ever paid Steve any mind anyway - which left Steve free to wander once more to the recruitment station. There, to his luck, he met Dr. Erskine, the man who would change everything. He had given Steve a chance! Something so many others had refused to do. As soon as they got their eyes on his medical history, he was out without a second thought. But Erskine had seen something, something other than the near constantly sick blond who survived on pennies and fighting with people three times his size.

He had been brought to the camp with the other soldiers, given a uniform, and a too big helmet and was expected to keep up with all these guys who had probably passed the tests with flying colours. Steve just barely made it through, though part of the problem was from the other guys who, much like the bullies Steve had grown up with, loved picking on the little guy. Struggling through the courses, outsmarting the others on a few things, Steve was soon given the whole speech on this project, the one that, should everything go as planned, would make him into a super soldier. But first, he was required to go through some additional training. Of course this didn't exactly bring great delight to the man who was ready to start this thing, but he had to follow orders. He wasn't the spitfire on the streets of Brooklyn defending every dame and helping every little old lady he met. No, he was a soldier now.

So naturally when he had been instructed to wait for this man to get here Steve was a little wound up and a little ticked to go along with it. Sitting at the table in one of the mess tents, Steve rested his chin in the palm of one skinny hand, his elbow on the old wooden table as he idly drummed on it with his other hand, and blew the fringe of blond hair out of his face. If anyone had seen him, they never would have thought he was to be anything but a liability. He hoped whoever this guy was wasn't expecting some jacked up muscles, because he would be sorely disappointed.

Slade was walking with Captain Adeline Kane who was the person in charge of training young soldiers Slade was happy to know that he was able to train and meet the person that had chosen for project rebirth. Slade and Adeline were talking on their way over to the mess tent Slade saw someone sitting at one of the tables he was not what Slade was expecting to see. Slade looked at Adeline "your kidding me right this is the man you chose for this project out of all the other people we could have taken for it". Adeline laughed at Slade "I'm afraid not that is steve Rogers and he is the one we chose for this project have fun Slade" Adeline put a hand on his shoulder and turned and left him.

Slade walked into the tent and stood by the table "so your Steve rogers" Slade looked the boy up and down and sighed this is going to take a while and he would have to alter his training for this boy deciding on what he should be able to complete without trouble. Slade sat down at the table "my names Slade Wilson I will be going through your additional training for the program mind telling me a little about your self" Slade looked through the things on the clipboard his was given that was what he had to teach Steve like gymnastics, hand-to-hand combat, and military strategy. This is going to be a long few weeks and maybe longer Slade was not to disappointed in this he was well trained by Adeline and he knew not to judge someone by how they look but by how they preformed when given a task.

Hearing two people talking and getting nearer to the mess tent, Steve sat up straight on the bench and waited. He expected some sort of comment on his appearance, it was only natural for someone, anyone, in the army to have some sort of concern with the scrawny kid at the base. He tried not to roll his eyes as the two talked about him as though he wasn't sitting right there. He may not have the best hearing abilities from one too many ear infections, but the message was loud and clear.

Steve watched the man approach, feeling his eyes over his body as he was scrutinized. Refraining from rolling his eyes, Steve waited for the man to finish his initial judgement. He watched the man, Slade Wilson, sit down and ask him about himself.

"Didn't you read my file?" Steve asked. He was sure someone must have shown Mr. Wilson his file if he was to be his trainer for this project. "Name's Steven Grant Rogers, lived in Brooklyn all my life with my ma until she passed away. Not anything too spectacular to tell you to be honest Mr. Wilson." Steve rubbed the back of his neck and looked down. Wasn't he making himself sound like the best candidate. He had already been chosen so it wasn't as though he had to impress anyone, but it still fell as though he should make himself sound better than he actually was. Heck, he had already done so on his first couple dozen attempts at enlisting.

"Sir, I'm ready to do everything you throw at me! I may not seem like much, but I can sure as hell work hard."

Slade listened to what Steve told him he was regretting this decision ever the more why had he agreed to train this guy Slade looked for the list it was a little all to advanced right now but Slade was surprised by his egareness in getting into this that brought a smile to his face this kind of remind him of when he first joined the army.

Slade stood up "Alright Roger's we will start with endurance training and Tactical Analysis and since you see ready to get started lets get to it follow me and keep up" Slade walked away from the table and went towards the training area he was interested to see what this man could do Slade stopped in font of a tent by the track where they would practice and increase his endurance Slade was already a master of almost everything but this wasn't about him. Slade pointed at the tent "that is where we will go over Tactical Analysis but right now we will test your endurance so I can get an idea on where you are in this I have already done this course ten times over and have the top time of completion". Slade looked at Steve "let's see how well you can do and maybe we will later get into the more advanced training but for now complete the course and then we will move on to the Tactical Analysis I will be monitoring you performance on the course and we will not move on till you complete the course if you fail it you will start over and will not stop till you have done it" .

Slade did not think that he was being hard on the boy he wanted to be treated as a solider then Slade would treat him like a solider and Slade had an idea of how hard he could push this kid just by meeting him.

Steve watched Slade carefully, trying to determine what the older man was thinking. He had a good idea, going off of what he had been living with the past few years whenever someone new met him (like the countless dames Bucky tried to get to date him, double dates usually ended with Bucky having one on each arm and Steve leaving early). Steve watched as Slade looked at a sheet of paper. He didn't know what was on it, but whatever it was it couldn't have been that bad as Slade smiled upon reading it. Clearly not his medical history then.

When the older man's attention turned to Steve, he snapped to attention, hanging on every word Slade said. Endurance training? Well, Steve was already screwed. He hoped Slade wasn't expecting much from the guy who could get winded going up a flight of stairs. Hurrying to his feet, Steve followed the man out, casting a wary glance at the track as they approached. He heard the instructions given to him and nodded his understanding. Steve hoped he wasn't timed, or at least that he wouldn't have to complete the course in a certain time. That he would surely fail. He got into position and waited for the signal to begin. He was determined to do this, determined to prove himself to this man if it killed him!

Slade gave Steve the signal to go ahead Slade knew that this training program would be hard on the boy but they had to get through it no matter what happened Slade looked over the track it was nothing that this boy could handle it was simple.

Slade watched the boy start the course Slade had been through rough training for most of his life but nothing could be worse then when he was stranded on an island for about 5 years with his partner Billy winter green and a couple of others he had spent most of his life trying to get off that island the reason he was there was a mission to find and rescue a man that had gone missing there awhile ago. the islands name was Lian yu. Slade brought his attention back to Steve Rogers he had to forget the past for now and focus on what was going on before him but that didn't help him from flinching when someone came over to him and grabbed his shoulder he turned to see Captian Adeline "so how's he doing" Slade looked over at Steve "he's fine for now just starting with something easy" Slade smiled at Adeline. Adeline turned to watch Steve for a moment "don't forget we are going over hand to hand today after your done here" Adeline walked away and Slade watched her go then turning his attention back to Steve.

Slade did not know how this boy would ever succeed in hand to hand but that was a lesson for another day right now they were working on endurance and tactical analysis.

As soon as he got the signal Steve started. He thought he had started off well, good speed, good form. He recalled having to run the drills when he had first been considered for the project, not really expecting anything from it after seeing the other guys he was training with. The first section wasn't so bad, it was a flat track and though his speed wasn't the best, Steve was feeling pretty good about this. When he came to the first obstacle, his expression dropped. A climbing wall. Knowing that Slade was watching him, Steve tackled it. He was doing well for the first few moments, than he slipped. He grabbed a hold of the ropes, feeling his arms jerk as his body stopped and hit the wooden structure. A small 'oof' escaped the small blond as he regained his bearings and continued climbing. A little winded after that, Steve continued his trek to the next obstacle, his lungs already beginning to protest at the activity.

The next obstacle was hurdles. Steve had always struggled with these, never being able to quite get over them completely without some struggling. Attempting the first one, Steve nearly made it, until his boot caught the edge and sent the man face first into the dirt. The wheezing only increased with the puff of dust this sent up and Steve sat up coughing. He wondered if not being able to breath was a valid excuse for not finishing, but when he sent a glance back to the start of the course where Slade stood, along with the Captain, he felt it wasn't. So, still struggling to catch a breath, he plunged on.

By the time he had crossed the end of the track, Steve was leaning over with his hands on his knees, breath harsh and interrupted by coughing.

"Sir....I..." He tried again. "Finished...the course....sir." Steve tried to salute but was sent into a coughing fit that had him doubled over.

Slade was a little concerned when Steve came over practically out of breath Slade came over to Steve leaving the Clip board behind he knew that this was not always good "you alright Steve" Slade looked around to see if he could flag anyone down from here but everyone was busy Slade looked over at the tent and decided that he should get Steve some where to catch his breath. Slade knew the infirmary Bay was far from here but if he had to he would get him there even if he had to carry him there himself. Slade decided to bring Steve first over to one of the benches near the training area and sit him down. He knew now that this training was going to take a little longer then he tough it would. Slade walked Steve over to the bench and sat him down "you rest here I will be right back" Slade walked away from Steve before he ran towards the Tent for their Tactical Analysis training he didn't really know what to do right now Slade paced for a moment he had to get Steve to the infirmary Bay Slade walked back towards Steve. without consulting him he picked Steve up and started walking him towards the infirmary bay stopping just out side of it Slade put Steve down and flagged one of the nurses inside she came out and help Steve inside. Slade walked behind her "Steve where you are good and ready come find me and then we will move onto the rest of our training and also try not to kill your self next time".

Slade walked back out side and started to walk towards the area where Adeline was watching the other soldiers "Hey Adeline I'm here early" Adeline turned to face Slade "what happened" Slade looked towards the infirmary bay "well he finished the course and then he was particularly out of breath so I brought him to the infirmary bay." Adeline smiled at Slade "well look at you being nice to another solider for once" Slade laughed at that remark "it was that one time anyway let's get to doing hand to hand" Slade went and found a sparing partner and they began their hand to hand combat.

Steve tried to answer Slade but found that he just couldn't. He allowed the older man to lead him to one of the benches, and sat down. He rested his forearms on his knees, head down. Now was not the time for this! He was suppose to be a soldier! Steve knew Slade would be disappointed, maybe even angry, but there was nothing he could really do about that. His body had always worked against him for as long as he could remember. He heard Slade walk off and focused on trying to draw breath into his lungs, through the dust and dirt that had brought this on. Away from the track it was a little better to do so, and Steve was able to at not gasp though the wheezing still remained on each inhale. Seeing Slade returning, Steve sat up straighter and made to say something when the older man picked him up. Naturally, he struggled a little. He had never liked being carried, or seen as weak for that matter. The many times Bucky had done just this he had always been faced with a struggle until Steve tired himself out. He always complained afterwards, sometimes ignoring his best friend until he apologized or Steve finally gave in.

When Slade finally set him down, Steve shot a glare at the older man before following the nurse into the tent. He heard what Slade said and would have laughed had he been able to. He was getting mixed signals from this man. On one side, he wanted Steve to push himself, to complete all the training exercised he through at him, treating him like a normal soldier. And now on the other side he was carrying Steve to the Infirmary tent and telling him to basically take it easy next time.

It wasn't long before Steve was insisting that he was okay, and the nurse reluctantly let him go with a warning that if things started up again to come back. Standing outside of the tent, Steve wondered where he was suppose to find Slade, the man hadn't exactly given him a location. Turns out, Steve was luckier than he thought. He found Slade relatively quickly. Sitting off to the side of the training area, Steve watched the man spar. He was really good and Steve wondered how he was suppose to keep up with something like this.

Slade was fighting with his partner and like always Slade won the fight no matter what lending a hand to his partner Slade helped them to their feet “you did a lot better than last time but next time don’t let me take advantage of your footing” Slade looked towards the edge of the training area and saw Steve their Slade walked over to him “good to see that your back on your feet I suppose you are ready for the second part of your training” Slade gave Steve a smile he was just glad to see that this boy had a little fight in him.

Slade started to make his way to the Tactical analysis training tent walking inside the tent Slade was interested to see what Steve could do that did not involve physical effort from his end. Slade walked around the table in the middle of the tent on the table was a large map of a battle field that was an area where the army was trying to reclaim. “We have been monitoring this area for a couple of months it is heavily guarded” the army had been sending men to serve this area for a while now and all they knew was that it was a supply camp near by that was well guarded by the enemy. All that they needed a plan to get it. Slade stood back and waited to see what Steve would do.

Steve was focused on Slade's movements more than his opponent, trying to pick up on things that may give him an advantage should he ever need to spar with the man. As the man approached him, Steve stood up.

"Of course, sir." He replied, he didn't think no was an option anyway. Following Slade, Steve knew he had to do good on this part of his training if he wanted to prove himself. Inside the tent, Steve was immedietly drawn to the large map on the table. Studying it, he heard Slade's explanation, and wondered briefly what he was suppose to do. Was he suppose to memorize the layout? Point out a mistake that had been deliberately made for this test? Keeping his eyes on the map, Steve circled the table, on hand on his chin as he thought.

So they wanted to gain the camp, but with the way it was guarded and the way the land was set up around it...

"What about the trucks?" Steve asked, following a road marked on the map that led from the camp outward. "Kind of like the Trojan Horse. If the men were to intercept the route they could use the trucks as a way to get into the camp and mount a surprise attack." He was mostly thinking out loud here and hoped he was making some sort of sense. Using his fingers to trace the road, he stopped at what looked to be a small gully.

"Here. It's far enough enough in that back up wouldn't make it in time, and the surrounding forest can provide some sort of protection."

Slade looked at Steve’s questions about using trucks that had been thought about before he looked over the map and followed where Steve followed the road he listened to Steve’s idea Slade looked at where Steve had followed the road to the gully Slade had not noticed that before maybe that was why Steve was the first one to suggest this idea “good work Steve you are actually the first person to suggest that and it may just work”.

Slade was about to go on with the training when he heard something going on outside Slade walked to the entrance of the tent and saw a large group of soldiers nearby “ what’s going on out here” one of the soldier turned to face Slade “didn’t you hear the team that we sent out a couple of weeks ago on a mission are back” Slade looked towards Steve “alright I think that we have do enough training for today” Slade walked out of the tent and went over to the group of soldiers that had returned from a successful mission “this deserves a celebration I have a bottle of authentic australian rum and I think this is the perfect moment to crack it open what do you boys say.”

Steve watched Slade, waiting for some sort of reaction to his idea. He knew it probably wasn’t the best, especially when compared to what others who were already well trained in this sort of thing could provide. It was to his shock and surprise when he got a ‘good work’ instead.

“Thank you sir. I’ve always been one for details.” He admitted. Being an artist had helped develop this way of thinking, and clearly it had paid off. Before they could go any further with this idea, or any others Slade thought to throw at him, a commotion from outside had them pausing. Steve remained by the map as Slade went to investigate.

This sudden interruption was enough to bring an end to today’s training, something Steve was both grateful for, as well as saddened. He had just begun to prove that despite what he lacked physically he could make up for in other ways. Steve heard a cheer go up from the soldiers whom Slade had addressed and moved to the entrance of the tent. Letting the flaps fall shut behind him, Steve watched as some disappeared into tents, or were moved to the infirmary, and still others had begun cracking open bottles and downing the contents.

He knew he shouldn’t partake in this, needing to keep his wits about him for the following day, as well as for anything Slade may throw his way in the meantime. A second reason, Steve wasn’t exactly good at holding his alcohol. The number of times Bucky had taken him out drinking with his friends, or while being set up on a double date of sorts, Steve had always stopped at one or two drinks, at least after the few times he had gotten drunk and made a fool of himself. He was a lightweight and he knew it, no need to act a fool in front of all these soldiers.

Slade stood outside his tent with a bottle of authentic australian rum and a few glasses Slade handed the glasses to the group of soldiers that had joined him opening the bottle with a knife he pour the contents into the glasses. Slade placed the bottle on the table beside him “alright boys a toast to a successful mission and hopefully more to come” with a cheer the boys drank the contents of their glasses. Slade laughed as some choked after downing the glass “what’s wrong can’t handle your alcohol” the others of the group joined in the laughter and later continued to walk around giving each other slaps on the back and congradulations. Slade took the bottle and poured another glass for himself and others that joined the group outside the tent. Slade always enjoyed a good drink to a successful mission and he always took pleasure in watching the boys enjoy themselves. Slade looked around the camp to see if he could see anyone he knew around the base when he saw a sergeant barnes and Steve “Barnes care to share in a drink and Steve why not come over to” Slade poured two glasses of the rum and offered it to Barnes and then to Steve.

Steve watched Slade handing out the rum to the soldier, all of whom seemed more than happy about the break in training and the free drink. It was amusing to see that some of the men were having a hard time getting the contents of their glasses down, and keeping them down for that matter. The whole attitude of the camp seemed to have changed with the arrival of the group, making it much lighter than it had been only moments before where you were more likely to get a scowl and have your boots spat on, rather than a slap on the back and a glass full of rum and whatever else it was the men had pulled out for the occasion.

Watching the soldier’s all having fun and seeming to have a break for the first time in a long time, Steve was called over by Slade to join him for a drink. Making his way through the crowd of celebrating men, Steve made it to where Slade was standing with another tall man whom Steve didn’t recognize at first. It wasn’t until he was standing across from him that Steve realized that this was his best friend, Bucky Barnes.

“Bucky!” Steve shouted at the same time that Bucky said his name with a hint of confusion.

“Steve! What the hell is your scrawny ass doing here?” Bucky asked, the smile on his face taking away some of the bite in his words as he wrapped his friend in a hug.

Slade stood talking to Barnes when Steve came over Slade watched the two men hug “so you two know each other I see” Slade stood with the two men for a few more minutes “I guess I will let you two catch up Rogers tomorrow we start close combat I expected to see you bright and early at the training area”. Slade walked off into the crowd of soldiers Slade talked with a couple of the soldiers before heading over to meet Adeline .“ I really hope it’s worth training this boy because if I find out that this is not worth it” Adeline cut Slade off before he could finish what he was going to say “I assure you that it will be worth it Slade and if it not I will make it up to you okay”. Slade smiled and kissed Adeline on the cheek and followed her towards the general’s living quarters to meet with the other generals and higher ranking employees at the camp to talk about the experiment that Steve was here for. Slade still didn’t like the idea of Steve being the man that was chosen for it just based on what this man was like Slade didn’t agree with the doctor on his choice but Slade’s argument was useless.

The Next Day
_____________
Slade stood ready at the training area he had talked to Barnes into coming by and helping Slade show Steve to more complicated fighting techniques that they would go over later on Slade didn’t know if Steve would ever be ready to try hand to hand combat or combat in general. Slade picked up a bamboo rod and swung it around his head and performed moves both attacking and defending with them while he waited for Steve to show Slade only had a few more days to try and prove that this boy was the right choice and he had to try and turn this boy into somewhat of a soldier before his time was up.

Keeping his arm draped over Steve’s shoulders as he turned to face Slade, Bucky laughed.

“You could say that. Steve here’s been my best friend since we were kids. We pretty much grew up together.” Steve was just as shocked as Bucky was to be seeing one another here, and as Slade dismissed them both, they wasted no time in catching up. Bucky of course wanted all the details as to how someone like Steve had even gotten passed the evaluation to even be considered.

The following day, Bucky led Steve to the training area, stopping to salute Slade when they got there.

“Morning sir.” Steve said, following Bucky’s example.

“Hope you’re ready Stevie, Slade here doesn’t get picked to train just anyone.” Bucky said, shooting his friend a wink before grabbing one of the extra rods and following Slade through some of the techniques. He was worried, knowing Steve and all his health problems it was a wonder he hadn’t gotten himself confined to the med tent yet.

“You just got to give him a chance.” Bucky said, holding Slade off. “He’s got heart, and he’s stubborn as hell.”
