A few soft taps made him turn to the window. It had begun to snow again, if you could call it snow. He watched sleepily as the flakes, dark and brown, fell softly to the ground.
He preferred to call it snow, rather than what it actually was. Most of the people left called it varying things, such as- Ashfall, or FallingDeath...
Snow was a more gentle word.
There wasn't a lot of things to read about The End, most of the tales were passed down from one generation to the next. If you were lucky, you were able to get your hands on a book someone had written after. Documenting what happened in those fateful years.

Lucas was born right after the war, growing up in a kill or be killed kind of world. It hardened a person, but he tried his best to be as kind as his situation permitted to the people he came across.
It had been 20 years since then, and the world was finally putting itself back together.

Her mind was racing, heart pounding as her feet slammed against the dry ground that had a light coating of brown ash atop it while more fell down around her. Personally, she hated the Ashfall, but then again she didn't really know anyone who liked it, and hastily brushed off any that fell in her matted brown hair for fear that the stories of mutation or burns from the ash were true.
Roxy's eyes were lit with many things, fear, excitement, adrenaline, just to name a few. The whole situation was funny really, so she couldn't help but laugh a little. A group of bandits had stolen some stuff from her a few weeks back, so she followed them around until she was confident she could steal back what they had taken without being caught. She was wrong. They had caught her making her exit, wanted the stuff back, and had been chasing her.
She wasn't quite sure what would happen to her if they caught up, rape, torture, execution, exposure to nuclear waste for some weird experiment, but she didn't really want to find out, so she ran like her life depended on it, which was possible. Casting her gaze up for a moment to scan the horizon for a place to hide she spotted a building not too far away and a little bit to her left. Roxy picked up speed at this glimmer of hope, begging the world to be on her side and let the people there be more friendly than the ones behind her. The bandits were at least 15 minutes behind her but she didn't want to risk anything.
Coming up to the building she started banging against the door as hard as she possibly could, if no one opened up soon she was just going to fling it open and let herself in, but seeing a flicker of movement through a window that was something she'd rather not do.

Lucas jumped, startled by the frantic banging against the door. His quiet morning was ruined, and he wasn't exactly happy about that.
He crouched down quietly, grabbing his gun as he moved slowly to the door. With as much caution as he could manage, he peeked around the corner. Expecting to see some crazy person, or a gang of guys, he wasn't expecting to see a girl banging desperately against the door.
He stared at her for a couple of minutes, then stared past her. Eyes picking picking up on a large group of people, probably bandits, chasing her down. Ahhh...So that was it.

With a loud sigh, he ran towards the glass door. Gun in one hand, and the other unlocking it and ripping it open. Yanking her inside while firing a couple of shots at the raging group of bandits.
He pushed her inside, shutting the door and locking it then pushing a small couch against the door.
"Come-On!"
He snapped at her, grabbing her wrist and yanking her up the stairs.

The copper skinned girl couldn't help but get a bit impatient as whoever, whatever, was inside was taking its sweet time to open the door, but just as she was about to bust her way in the door was flung open. A few shots were fired, and she wasn't sure if they were for her, she didn't really have time to find out though as the bandits were closing in and the man with the gun had pushed her inside and out of the way. He then had pushed a couch in front of the door, which probably wouldn't do much against a group of bandits but anything is better than nothing.
She wasn't sure what to do next until he grabbed her wrist and started yanking her up some stairs. "Don't grab me!" The indignant words flew out of her mouth before ahe could even consider to be kinder to the man helping her, but she pulled her arm free and followed after him anyways. "You were the one taking so long to open the damn door!" Her voice was already somewhat high-pitched, and what she was saying only made her seem more childish.
When they made it to the top of the stairs she wasn't quite sure what she expected, more people maybe, whether they would have helped or not she didn't know but it would have been people at least, but there didn't seem to be anyone but the two of them. Roxys mind wandered onto thoughts of if she had walked herself into some sort of trap, or a psychopaths home maybe.

Lucas tisked at the girl, wondering how someone so childish could have survived. Instead he ignored her, pushing open a window on the second floor and peeking out. It took a few minutes, but they showed up.
Good thing they were stupid, or his head would have surely been blown off at that moment. The bandits were so busy trying to force open a door, they didn't notice Lucas aiming his gun at them.
Well one noticed...But it was too late.

Lucas fired several shots down in mere seconds, hoping to hit at least one. Luckily for him he managed that, causing the rest of the group to freak out and scatter. Yelling profanities at him and the girl.
After a moment of silence, save it be the one guy who they left behind moaning on the ground, he turned to her. Eyes narrowed and lips tight.
"Who are you."
He spat out, lifting the gun and pointing it at her.

Roxy involuntarily rolled her eyes as he tisked at her but then proceeded to shove his head out the window. Was he trying to get himself killed? Whatever, at least he wasn't trying to kill her and that's all that mattered. She held back laughter as the man fired a few shots and only hit one of the bandits, consequently scattering the others by their own stupidity.
Now it was her turn, and within seconds she was facing down the barrel of a gun. "Hey, hey, hey, don't do anything rash." She grinned mischievously, gently resting a hand on the barrel of the gun and directing it slightly downwards. "The name's Roxy." A quick wink and a pretty smile, she didn't plan to be around the man for long but getting out alive was one of her main goals.
"So what's your name? I know you might not want to tell me, being chased by bandits and all, but I have a good reason, I was just trying to get my stuff back from them. Thanks for the help." There was a small glint of excitement in her eyes, nothing scared her too much. She had pretty much learned to be somewhat calm with a gun pointed at her, but let it linger too long and her temper might get the best of her.
The other one of her small dirty hands that wasn't on the gun drifted down to the hatchet hanging from her belt, not because she felt the need to use it, but just in case she had to.

Lucas raised an eyebrow, mouth twitching downward as she smiled at him. What did she think? A wink and a smile was going to get her out of the situation? Honestly he was a bit offended that she would even try that.
Putting that aside, he knew there wasn't any more bullets in the barrel. It was a bluff, something he could hide behind. He didn't trust her, and wasn't going to trust her until she gave him a reason to.

Saying your name starts a small level of trust between the two people. Lucas didn't want any connections between them, but he was in a bit of trouble.
Bandits had connections everywhere. You get on their bad side, and they'll do anything to get back at you.
He was in this now, and it was her fault for bringing him in it.
"Lucas."
He said shortly, an irritated look flashing across his face.

Annoyance seared through her, quite disliking the fact that her methods weren't working on him. Whatever. "Nice name." She said, a hint of anger lingering in her voice. "So what was the point in helping me if you're just going to point a gun at me and get all angry?" Roxy's voice was filled with irritation but she couldn't stop herself from giggling a bit at the situation.
"You could have just left me out there to die, obviously you're not as mean as you're trying to seem." The tan girl pushed her anger aside and smiled again, a last attempt at recovering her pseudo-flirtatious demeanor. "We're in this together now. Unless you kill me, that is, then you're in this alone." Why wouldn't she just shut up? This man had a gun on her but she was hell-bent on running her mouth. Idiot. Though she was beginning to suspect the gun was just for show, that he would have killed her by now if he had wanted to.
Gracefully, she took a step away from the gun and around him, peeking out the window to see if anyone was left out there. Not a soul. "You probably won't want to stay here anymore, sorry about that." A trace of guilt could be heard in her voice and seen in her face but it was gone as soon as it came, one second it was there and the next it was not.
"Why are you out here alone?" She queried, not sure why someone would locate themselves so closely to a bandit camp unless they were working together, but that didn't seem to be the case as Lucas had just killed one of them and had tried to kill more.

His lips twitched again, anger and frustration rising within. Too bad about his freaking big heart. If he didn't let her in, and she died, it would've been his fault...Having a guilt complex never stopped him from regretting his decisions.
"Why are you alone?"
He retaliated, angrily jerking his gun from where he was pointing it, to his side. An act of defeat. She was right, and she new it. And it frustrated him to no ends.
This was one of his safe-houses, a place he came to when he needed a rest. Far enough away from others that he didn't get bothered, but close enough that if he needed food he could get some.

Sighing, he ran his hands through his hair. Pulling down at his face in frustration.
"Just a second."
Lucas mumbled, jogging down the steps to where he was sleeping only moments before. Grabbing a small backpack, het set a few personal things inside as well as food and some money before hesitating. What was he doing? Leaving with someone you didn't trust? Apparently.
He sighed, then came back up the stairs. Backpack tossed over one shoulder.
