Alfred stood and led Bruce to the kitchen, his hand on his shoulder. When they got there, Alfred watched Bruce take a seat before going to heat up some food for the boy. He would understand if he didn't eat much, but even a few bites was better than nothing. Setting the plate before the boy, Alfred returned to the stove before letting out a sigh of his own. This was going to be hard.

He would make cookies later, if nothing else it would keep him busy for a little while. Maybe Bruce would have a few later that night before bed as he use to. Alfred knew tomorrow would be a busy day. The police would be one thing, but the butler knew that soon after the question of custody would come up. He would fight to keep Bruce under his own care. There would also be the problem of the press once news got around that the Waynes had been killed. For Bruce's sake, Alfred would deal with them, the boy didn't any of that.

Putting together the ingredients for the cookies, Alfred returned to the table, stirring the mixture as he went.

"Master Bruce, would you like to stay home from school tomorrow?" He knew school was a hard place for the boy, and that would only be doubly so now. He himself would also feel better knowing the boy was safe at the Manor.

Bruce sat at the table and watched as Alfred set the plate in front of him he picked at most of the food but ate most of it Bruce did not like this and the rest of the time is going to be very hard to deal with and everything else was going to be difficult. Bruce was not paying any attention to what was going on around him at the time until he heard Alfred's questions Bruce just nodded in response to it staying at home tomorrow would be great because if his life was not difficult before it was now Bruce liked the idea of being in the manor for a while he needed to accept that they were gone and he would have to adjust to his new life. Bruce then thought about something that he did not want the answer to it was what were they going to do when the question of who would look after Bruce if both his parents were gone and he only had Alfred. It was something that he almost always though about when his parents fought sometimes and he thought that they would get divorced but it never happened but now he did not know what the answer would be and he kind of did not want to know that answer.

Alfred watched Bruce for a moment before collecting the dishes and beginning to clean up. If he kept busy he...he what? Would forget anything had happened? No. There was no forgetting this. The manor would be quiet now, much too quiet and empty.

Finishing the few dishes, Alfred turned back to Bruce. What could he say to the kid who he considered like his own? That everything would be okay? He would get enough of that from the public, from those rich families masquerading as friends just to get something.

Sitting in the chair next to the boy Alfred placed a hand on Bruce's shoulder to get his attention.

"If you need anything, just let me know." The boy knew Alfred would listen, would be there for anything he needed, just as he had been in the past when the bullies at school had gotten out of hand, or the fights had frightened him late at night. He squeezed Bruce's shoulder before once more standing up. He knew it wouldn't be long before people began to arrive to express their sympathies.

Bruce watched Alfred take the plates away then sit in the chair next to him he did not look at him until Alfred put his hand on his shoulder Bruce listend to Alfred he knew that Alfred would always be there for him even when his parents were here they sometimes fought with each other and Bruce was sacred that they would seperate Alfred was also with Bruce when he was bullied at school and he could always count on Alfred to be here for him. " I will be sure to do that Alfred" Bruce smiled at Alfred that was the first time he smiled sience he had gotten back home. Bruce watched Alfred stand up Bruce knew that there would be a lot of people here to talk to him mostly people that he didn't know.

Bruce Sat there for a while longer he then stood up and went to the living room looked thoguh the moives they owned and put one on he just had to get his mind off of what had happened and this was the best he could do even though it would be with him forever.

Alfred watched Bruce leave the room. He didn't know what else to do. Clearing off the table, Alfred dropped the dishes in the sink and began pulling out what he would need for the many baked goods he would need for when the sympathizers came.

The following morning they came. The long driveway leading up to the Wayne Manor was filled with cars of all the families the Waynes had associated with either through work, or at social events. Alfred had been up late the previous night baking all manners of cookies, squares, and pastries which now sat displayed on the long table for the guests to pick at. The butler had made sure Bruce had had a clean suit to wear, and had made sure he was around in case something were to happen. There was no way Alfred was leaving his young master alone with all those sharks.

Clearing plates and making sure things were running smoothly, Alfred kept to the edges of the room mostly, being ignored by the guests who were too interested in gossiping about what would happened to the orphaned billionaire's kid. If anything, Alfred was a great actor, keeping his anger hidden as he refilled glasses and refrained from giving his own thoughts. He made sure to keep a closer eye on Bruce after hearing this. The last thing the boy needed was something like this filling his head.

Bruce walked through the room he was approached by many people who expressed their sympathies to him he occasionally heard a few conversations between the people about what would happen to him now that his parents were gone. Bruce tried to avoid these conversations but many of the people came over to him and asked if his parents had a plan in place just in case this had happened. Bruce didn’t know what was going to happen after this but he didn’t want to be taken anywhere away from the manor and he knew that Alfred would do anything to keep him safe. Bruce continued to walk through the room he just wanted this to end he didn’t really think that these people were really sorry for his loss. Bruce thought most of them were just here to find out what would happen to him Bruce was not really like it when one of the people here started talking to him about what might happen to him after this. Bruce didn’t really want to hear this Bruce tried to lose this person but they followed him through the room and continued to tell him possibilities of what could of what could happen.

Alfred had left the room for not even five minutes to refill a few trays, grumbling freely about the poor manners and social skills society’s elite had in the safety of the kitchen. Balancing the dishes carefully, Alfred reset them on the table just as a flock of people surrounded him for the new samples. Freeing himself from the group, Alfred’s next task was to find Bruce. Let these people find their own drinks for a little while.

Spotting the young boy, as well as a very persistent man on his tail, Alfred easily made his way over to them. He heard what people were saying as he passed, no one making any move to quiet down as he walked passed them on his mission to save Bruce.

“Master Bruce, I have been looking for you.” Alfred said when he was close enough to the pair to slip between them, blocking Bruce from the man’s view. Placing a hand on Bruce’s shoulder, Alfred gave a quick smile to the man before leading Bruce into the kitchen where he could speak with him. Kneeling on one knee before the boy, Alfred could tell Bruce was done with all this.

“Why don’t you go upstairs while I get rid of them?” He nodded in the direction of the main room. “I can bring something up after once I finish clearing up.”

Bruce was glad to see Alfred he really didn’t want to be around this man any longer than he had to Bruce listened to what Alfred said and nodded when he suggested that he could go upstairs. Bruce hurried to the staircase and went up to his room closing the door after him Bruce didn’t want to think about what would happen to him but he knew that Alfred would protect him no matter what happened to him. Bruce walked around his room taking off his jacket and placing it on his bed Bruce walked over to the bookshelf in his room and picked a random book even though he had read all of the books on the shelf. It was something to do while he waited for Alfred. Bruce layed down on his bed and began to read the book it was good to get a little bit of alone time after being downstairs with those people who only cared about were what would happen to his family's company and him both of which Bruce didn’t want to talk about right now.

Alfred watched Bruce run to the staircase and disappear upstairs before turning his sights on the crowded room. It took a moment to figure out how to get everyone’s attention, but the butler settled on the age old classic of tapping a glass with a spoon until the room was quiet and all eyes were on him.

“I’m terribly sorry for the interruption but master Bruce is not feeling very well. Thank you all for your sympathy in this time of grief and distress, but if you please, the boy needs some time to rest.” Alfred’s little speech was met with a few outbursts by some of the more snooty of the high society about a butler dismissing the gathering, but otherwise people seemed to get the message and began saying goodbye to one another, picking up their coats and leaving the manor once more in peace.

As Alfred shut the door on the last one, he let out a long sigh and surveyed the damage waiting for him. There was the table of platters to clean up, as well as scattered plates and glasses that no one seemed to know to place back on the empty trays, or even on the table.

Grabbing one of said trays, Alfred began his rounds picking up the discarded dishes, carting them back to the kitchen to wash. The same was done with the platters, while the furniture was straightened out, garbage was disposed of, and everything else was put back in order.

It took a little longer than Alfred would have liked to get everything done, but when he did finish he made up a plate for Bruce, a pot of tea, and carried it all upstairs on a covered tray. Reaching the boy’s room, Alfred knocked lightly before turning the knob and entering.

“Master Bruce?” Alfred said, turning the light on with his free hand. “I’ve brought you something to eat, and some tea. Thankfully those vultures weren’t any messier or I never would have been done.”

Bruce Looked up from his book when he heard a knock on his door and smiled at the familiar voice of alfred bruce put his book down on his bed and moved to the end of his bed “thank you alfred”. Bruce didn’t want to think about the things the people had asked about tonight but the thoughts still filled his mind what was going to happen after tonight would he be taken away from alfred and placed in another family. Bruce pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind “hey alfred you want to watch a movie with me or something” Bruce just wanted to do something to get his mind off of the events of the night. Bruce smiled and waited patiently for a answer from Alfred he just wanted to spend time with Alfred the one person who would never abandon him when he needed him.

A few Days later

Bruce walked down the halls of the school which seemed more crowded and Bruce could hear whispers of passing conversations as he walked down the hall to his class. Once in his class Bruce could hear his classmates talking about what happened to his parents and he could hear them gossiping about what would happen now that his parents were gone. Half way through class Bruce raised his hand and asked to leave the classroom the whispered conversations were beginning to get to him and he could feel tears in his eyes the teacher excused him and Bruce left his desk and walked into the hall.

Walking across the boy’s room, Alfred placed the tray down on the end table, lifting the lid in the process.

“Thankfully they left something behind, I know you didn’t eat very much early.” Alfred said, taking a moment to look over the young boy. It was horrible all the things that had happened to him, and tonight hadn’t helped in the slightest. Had Alfred had any say, he would have kept them all out until Bruce had had a chance to process things for himself. Unfortunately that wasn’t how things worked, especially for a family as big as the Waynes.

Alfred knew he would do anything it took to keep the boy with him. He was about to dismiss himself for the moment, allow Bruce some time alone when the boy spoke up.

“Of course. Any in particular you would like?”

♦♦♦

It had been a few days since the disaster, but things had yet to calm down. It seemed every day Alfred was having to chase off reporters, and those offering their condolences. Every spare second he had went to Bruce, making sure the boy was okay, or at least as okay as he could be. Otherwise Alfred did what he always did, keeping the manor looking spotless, and baking countless cookies and squares.

It had also been the day when the notice had come in about custody. It had been something Alfred had been avoiding as long as possible, but here it was. Bruce had no living relatives, at least none the butler was aware of, and sending him off to some orphanage was completely out of the question. If anything, Alfred himself would apply to be his caregiver, fighting everything and everyone that may object. He was the closest Bruce had to family and he’d me damned if he let the city take him away.

It was still early, not yet noon when the school called. Expecting to hear that something had happened, Alfred was already grabbing the keys to one of the cars when he was informed that something was wrong with Bruce. Wasting no time, the butler made it to the school and immediately found the office. There he was informed that Bruce had left class, but had no other information to give him. Thanking the receptionist, Alfred’s next task was to find the boy.
