"Something ancient?"

It wasn't entirely news to Alannah. She had read up on water related mythology every now and then for fun, but didn't know much. Maybe that was a flaw, considering how she was part of the mythos herself, but the oceans were old, very old, and so it made a lot of sense that there should be something equally antiquated still lurking in the depths. Had something woken up? Regardless of what it was, it wasn't happy.

Neither was Alannah upon Dimitri's last comment. "Whaddya mean, 'last chance'?" She responded, somewhat shrilly. "He didn't ask ya to sacrifice yourself or something, did he? Did he?! Don't do that, it's not worth it," she babbled on, gripping his hand so hard her already pale skin whitened around the knuckles. What was he so afraid of, aside from exploring? Alannah didn't know, and for once didn't want to ask. Instead, she made a decision.

"I'll help ya," she said quietly. "Two heads is better than one, right? And in the mean time," she continued as she began her descent still holding onto Dimitri's hand, letting her gut take her where the uneasy feeling felt the strongest, "you can tell me about that girl, huh? The one you mentioned back up in the coffee shop. What's up with her? You're a nice guy, but you don't just go around helping lost tweens find their way home."

"Alannah, don't let go... but uh, I think you're cuttin' off my circulation." Dimitri said, with a feint smile at the whole situation. "Y'know, maybe with you down here, seamonsters'll know not to mess with us." Dimitri teased. He felt the urge to tell Alannah it was too dangerous, but with the uncertainty in his chest, Alannah's hand made him feel like he was home. He made the promise to himself that protecting Alannah would be top priority over anything else.

"No, I wouldn't go willin'ly dyin' for that... abomination." Dimitri said with disgust. Nereus wasn't a man, he was technically a god, but Dimitri refused to refer to him like that. "But whatever's down here ain't weak, that's for sure. Lately I've just felt a lotta dread, goin' place to place. It's just been so rapid, I haven't'ad time to catch my breath." Dimitri recalled his entrance into Boston was followed by chasing after where he was told to go then being forced into a confrontation with his ex-girlfriend. From there it was a beating that he could still feel, and after that it was all running around and planning. Dimitri sighed a breath of relief. At least at the current moment there was nothing pressing directly in his line of sight.

"Her name's Asya." Dimitri replied with her name first, as it fascinated him. "Just like I said b'fore, she's like us, she knows all 'bout what it's like to live our life. I never really got to see her powers, but from what've gathered, they're underdeveloped. Her uh... her parents died." Dimitri was never comfortable talking about things so tragic like that, at least when they were real. "She was gettin' attacked when I found her. Me and some other people brought her here. She's stayin' with some people called the Ocean Eleven." Dimitri paused, looking for what to say next. "Listen, she's really actin' out now, but I had to help her. I know she has a pure heart." Dimitri made eye contact with Alannah, the subject was that important to him. But just as he locked eyes with her, his peripherals spotted something.

-----

Dimitri fell on all fours, he didn't have much fight left in him. He'd been warned about being beaten in a Boston alleyway before, but it was usually being warned about muggers or bad sports fans, never godly parents.

"You ask very many questions, yet none of them are within reason. It's your job to do as your god tells you to. We are not to be angered. Nereus warned, violently. "I've given so much for you, and you simply take. You take, with no appreciation. Now, I ask of you-"

Dimitri stopped interpreting his words. The events of the night had already weighed on him, heavily. Nereus's statements only layered on the events of the past weeks, months, and even the past two years to fall on him once more. Dimitri could hardly think straight in the moment. Nereus had taken everything from him, all of his friends, family, and otherwise loved ones. Even now, any friends he made would only be temporary until he was ripped away. Everything in Dimitri's ears became a distant ring.

The next few moments were a blur for Dimitri. All he was certain of was that one moment he was on the filthy cement, and the next all of his weight was thrown into his fist, which hurled into Nereus. Dimitri wasn't sure what surprised him more; the fact that he made the attack or the fact that it him him.

Nereus reacted very human-like, flinching in pain and shock, but only for one single moment. A million thoughts went through Dimitri's mind in that single moment, but his expression was shocked and he didn't move. His eyes locked onto the small amount of precious golden liquid, now slowly oozing out of his father.

Ichor, precious blood of the gods. Dimitri was so shocked that he hadn't even registered the unholy hellish fire that was about to be unleashed upon him.

-----

"Alannah." Dimitri said quietly, attempting to get her to look where he was. He led her over to it, but he already knew what it was. The golden liquid all fluently flowed together in a big clump, refusing to let the water pollute it. "Something godly bled here." Dimitri announced. There were no fish or otherwise anything living near the ball of ichor. But there was a comb that Dimitri was curious about. It looked as though it was made of seaweed and shells. Who owned such a thing?

Dimitri couldn't see it, but Alannah was grinning as she whipped her tail left and right, surging downwards. Even after things with Nereus had taken a turn for the worse, he hadn't lost the cheerful glint-in-the-eye voice he often spoke in. Even as he told her about the strange, probably murderous entity they were looking for and the poor orphaned girl, Alannah couldn't help but smiling. It honestly wasn't the best timing as he swung her around with a very serious expression and she was still beaming like the Sun.

"'Ocean's Eleven'?"

Her grin faltered. She knew them. She was them; a group of people seeking to keep peace within the supernatural community. They were relatively new and had been formed a good fifteen years ago following the creation of the Frogmen, a bunch of activists who strove to make the existence of people who weren't human known. The had fortunately had very limited success, only being taken serious by conspiracy theorists and people who desperately wanted 'The Little Mermaid' to be based on a true story. But Ocean's Eleven didn't want to take any chances, and had as such tried to make ties with supernatural youths and their families to prevent them from getting any good ideas about dramatic reveals in the park that couldn't be dismissed as street magic. Alannah opened her mouth to reply, but Dimitri wasn't looking at her anymore. His attention had been captured by something behind her, and she turned around.

Her hands flew up to her mouth. An oily blob of golden liquid was faintly illuminating the area around it, and although it was gorgeous, it wasn't what Alannah was interested in. The seabed beneath the unfamiliar liquid was strewn with the corpses of small fish. Alannah reached out, gingerly picking up a dead fish. It looked like it had simply died without a cause; had just given up on life right then and there. She turned it over. Aha. One fin had been seared, thin spikes of bone clearly visible. The mermaid turned to Dimitri with a questioning expression, holding out the fish for him to take. It wasn't often that she found herself speechless, but this was one of the times. Who could have done that?

"Godly?" She said, her voice sounding faint and far away to her own ears. She wanted to touch the golden liquid. Even after looking at the poor fish and all its fellows, lying dead on the bottom of the ocean, she still wanted to touch the shimmering stuff that seemed more light and liquid. She hadn't ever been afraid to get her hands dirty, and both her parents and Dan often thought her reckless in that regard, but they were so far away now, and so, touch it she did.

A scorching pain erupted in her left palm the moment she made contact with it. She never managed to scream before she passed out.

Dimitri's expression became dauntingly grim when he realized there was so much dead marine life. The pair's hands had detached by this point, but Dimitri hardly registered the lack of physical contact. He took the fish and held it, looking at the seared side. Growing up, Dimitri hadn't had any particular fondness of the sea, or the life in it. With every single day that had passed, Dimitri grew closer to the sea. Seeing the fish broke his heart. Dimitri held it in his hand, and silently wished them a better afterlife; wherever it may be.

At that point, Dimitri wasn't sure what was most respectful for the fish. He could always drop it, and leave it with its kin. But Dimitri figured that the sea would want things to continue in their natural order. If he could somehow bring the fish to sharks, then they wouldn't go to waste, and the ocean would continue to stay in harmony. He didn't like the idea of disrespecting the fish, but it was what was best for everyone involved. He hoped Alannah would agree.

Dimitri gently set the fish down on the pile and turned his head back to face his ex-girlfriend. He was distracted by her in the moment. The glow reflected on her features perfectly. Dimitri felt secure for once; Alannah would help him fix this. Then he would get rid of the ichor.

Then in one split moment, Dimitri's security escaped with no trace.

Alannah's hand touched the glowing ball of ichor. There was no noise, especially in the depths of the ocean. Everything was dead silent, and Dimitri's heart stopped beating in his chest. Dimitri had felt many foreign emotions of upset since he'd become a full-time scion, but none of it had prepared him for the sheer gut-wrenching anguish he was experiencing. Dimitri's expression morphed into one that was disturbed and utterly distressed. His joints and muscles locked up tightly for the moment. He was only feet from her, but he felt so helpless.

After what was only just one more moment, Dimitri dashed forward to catch her body before it hit the floor of the ocean. Despite how soft the landing would have been, Dimitri couldn't bare to see it float lifelessly for even a single moment. "Alannah, please, no." Dimitri choked out in a desperate and husky tone. A sharp ringing ran through Dimitri's ears as he attempted to process something so disturbing to him. Everything was moving so slowly, and yet, he couldn't even begin to keep up with it.

With some force, Dimitri boosted himself up, Alannah now cradled tightly in his arms. He wished he'd never let her go. Dimitri came to a screeching halt only a few meters from the floor of the ocean. It was Friday. Dimitri started flooding tears, though he wasn't exactly crying fully; he didn't have that time to waste. Friday night was always her soak day. She would go straight from work to the ocean in her uniform, just like when they'd met. Alannah had to re-hydrate for twenty-four hours straight or else she would die.

Dimitri couldn't find any solace or calm in the storm. All he could see in his head were the countless dead fish. Alannah couldn't be dead. She just simply couldn't be. There was too much Dimitri hadn't told her yet. She wasn't supposed to go. Tears continued to flood the demigod's eyes while he desperately searched for the right thing to do. Glancing at the motionless body in his arms twisted his stomach. He couldn't stand the sight of it.

Hardly able to even keep himself up, Dimitri still kept Alannah tightly into him. He thought of all the people that he'd bring her to to save her from this. None of them could help. None of Alannah's friends or family could help either. Someone would have to be in the ocean in order to help.

"Nereus!" Dimitri suddenly shouted. The legend was that saying a sea god's name in the sea was to alert them. Dimitri yelled it again, waiting for his father to show up. He lowered Alannah down into a coral reef. "Nereus, please! I won't resist anymore!" Dimitri begged of his father, but still, he didn't show up. No one could do anything for Alannah except for Dimitri. Dimitri continued to lose his grip on the situation, but didn't stop acting on it.

Dimitri sat with his legs crossed and layed Alannah's head in his lap. He gripped her hand in his own, trying not to feel the intense guilt when he saw the mark on her hand. He'd had much more experience with healing people with fresh water, and even then, it had generally always been simply open wound cuts he had to heal. He wasn't sure if this was a burn or worse, but he was desperately hoping it could be fixed. He gripped the other side of her hand, even though it wasn't burned, just to have her hand surrounded by his hands. He applied everything he'd ever done with healing to the palm of her hand.

Dimitri remained in this position without fault. He'd lost track of time, but it didn't bother him. The utter distraught in Dimitri was at large. He was certain Alannah was gone. He looked down at her face once more, and he continued to shed tears. All he saw in his head was her smiling. From the first time they met, to the first time they shared their secret lives, he'd had so many mental images of her smiling. The most recent one was just before Dimitri's nightmares became a reality. He locked up at the thought: he'd never get to ask her why she was smiling.

Dimitri finally broke out into a sob while he tried to heal her. The desperate attempts at being strong meant nothing. All he could do was hope that something would work. While tears continued to pour out of his eyes and straight into the ocean, he leaned his forehead onto hers. "What I said. Y'know, 'bout not bein' able to catch my breath 'nd all. I've seen so much. So many bad people. But you're precious, worth more'than gold. Please, Alannah, don't go. There's still so much left. PLEASE." Dimitri pleaded with her, hardly being able to speak clearly.

Her hand felt very warm. That was the first thought that greeted Alannah as she came back to consciousness. Her left hand was very warm, like it was lying in direct sunlight, but that was silly, because she was under water. Everything moved so slow and it was so dark. It took her a minute to realize that it was dark chiefly because her eyes were closed. They didn't seem to want to open, so she gave up on trying to blink the sticky stuff that was keeping them shut away and returned her focus to her hand, which no longer felt sunny-warm, but oven-warm. Her face twisted; she was too far away to react with much more as the feeling turned from uncomfortable to painful. She thought she heard a voice, but it sounded like it was coming from a phone lying across the room. With great effort, she turned her head in the direction of the sound, finally managing to open her eyes.

A blurry, unfamiliar vision of someone with dark hair greeted her.

"Pa?" Her voice sounded small and younger than she recalled. But no, her parents never visited her in her apartment. There wasn't room. They had gone once, to see how she had set everything up in her little home, and that had been it. Daniel and Dimitri and various other people sometimes stayed the night, but it couldn't be one of them, she reasoned in her slightly incoherent state. The pain in her hand bit and burned at her, and she subconsciously sucked air in through her teeth. She blinked again, and Dimitri swam into view. He looked concerned, but otherwise as perfect as she always thought he was. Alannah smiled. It was hard not to.

"What day is it?" She asked hoarsely. She smacked her tongue a few times. It tasted like salt. Was it Saturday, then? Had she already been in the sea? Well, her hand hurt like Hell, but she wasn't dead, so... And this Saturday meant another important thing. She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment. Her room looked very bright.

"Happy birthday."

With all things considered, it unnerved Dimitri with just how simple it was to move a body around Boston. How many people had moved bodies around the city and no one had even batted an eye? The thought had sent a shiver down Dimitri's spine, though he didn't linger on it. All it took was some wits and guile, and you had yourself a moved body in a crowded New England city. For all the evil that it could do, Dimitri was glad it had done some good. If she would just make it.

Each moment under the sea ticked slower than the last. The shock quickly made ties with the devastation in the demigod's heart. It didn't take long for the unease of the sea to intensify, entering into Dimitri's mind and reminding him that it wasn't safe. Generally speaking, Dimitri hadn't ever had to face something like this. In the past, it was usually just himself in danger of dying. In any situation where he had to protect someone, they usually knew combat even better than he did, and even if they didn't, they were at least able to run. But now, the stress piled onto the demigod. He could hardly think, let alone act. The next hours would determine so much for the demigod, and nobody was coming; it was his fight to win or lose.

Suffice to say, Dimitri considered it a victory when she'd still had a pulse when they'd arrived back at Alannah's home. His body was physically and mentally exhausted from the energy sapped and the anguish experienced. His veins ached from all of the effort he was putting into magic, like a muscle, over exerting it would cause injury. Dimitri was utterly disheveled from the night. He'd seen gruesome things in the past, but even without blood, Alannah's body was something he wasn't willing to accept. He continued to apply all of the healing properties his veins could produce.

His hair was entirely messy, sticking up at some parts and overall looked like he'd just survived a tornado. His eyes were bloodshot and his skin was pale. After what had seemed like several eternities, she finally made a noise. Dimitri couldn't make it out, his senses weren't as in tune as normal; he was just too exhausted. Dimitri looked up to the ceiling, though his heart was looking passed it to the sky. "Thank you." He whispered under his breath, though he wasn't sure his prayers even relatively played a part. In either case, he was grateful no matter what.

Alannah commented on his birthday, but it didn't phase Dimitri. After what she'd been through, Dimitri expected her to be somewhat delirious. "Shh. It ain't my birthday, Alannah. You're home now, you're gonna be alright. Everythin' is gonna be okay." Dimitri said, in a hushed, comforting tone to the mermaid. Subconsciously, Dimitri had counted the days in his head. He blinked once, upon the realization. "Wait, I guess maybe it is..." Dimitri said, relatively emotionless. His birthday was such a small event in comparison to everything else that was going on.

"C'mon, I gotta give you one more treatment." Dimitri insisted. He lifted a bucket of water next to her bed. She'd used it to throw up in once after she'd had more to drink than she could handle. Who knew it would one day help save her life? He dipped his hand in, far too overtired and exhausted to actually will the water through the air. His hand came out with a little ball of water resting on it, it, in truth, hurt just to hold in shape. "Take my hand. With the bad one." Dimitri asked of her.

It was a relief to hear Dimitri's voice, but how he could care so little about his birthday, she didn't understand. Birthdays were the best thing; it meant cake and fun and scavenger hunts in the sun. Alannah giggled as she held out her hand to him.

"You'n drink now," she snickered. "Without cops." Her face suddenly took on a look of profound puzzlement. "But you do need cups."

Dimitri's hand was cool and wet on her own; a nice feeling. As the pain lessened, by virtue of the divine powers Alannah still didn't completely understand despite her own affiliation with the same element they derived from, the clouds of confusion dissipated and the world became a little clearer. She recognized the light blue curtains above her bed. Henry, the stuffed lobster, was sitting by her feet. Her cheeks reddened slightly.

"You look exhausted," she told Dimitri. He really did. The pain in her hand wasn't so bad, but she could feel a headache sneaking up on her by her left temple. "What - what happened? I remember the gold 'n - what was that?" She lifted her hand from his, looking at the puffy, bright pink skin. "Were all those fish dead? And that - that girl? What does the Ocean's Eleven want with her?" Her mind whirled. She wasn't quite sure why she hadn't told him that she was part of that organization yet, but she knew she felt wary about it, and in turn guilty. She just hoped he'd notice the confusion rather than the sheepishness.

Dimitri was glad this would be the last time he had to give Alannah healing treatment, at least he hoped so. The thought of her being frequently injured when they spent even a moment together wasn't something he was excited about. "I'm good. Y'know, good 'nough." Dimitri replied to her. He wiped a hand across his face, he could physically feel the loose and damp skin under his eyes. Dimitri let out a yawn. Sleeping would have been pleasant, but even if the ocean was just outside the door, Dimitri knew he'd be getting punished badly if he was caught napping on the job. There were still things to do. More than before.

"If y'taught me anythin' 'bout drinkin', it's that I ain't so great at it." Dimitri said, a smile crept onto his face at the memories. He wasn't one for drinking, and likely would have never tried it until he was twenty-one, but Alannah had changed the for him. "You remember the first time I sipped any've that? I coulda sworn that was the end of my tongue." Dimitri laughed a little. There was a lot going on for him, but in the moment, he appreciated the smallest things. The memories didn't feel bittersweet for the moment, despite the past holding so many happy moments up to the dark that was the present, he was grateful he had that torch with him, to light the way.

"Look, 'sfar as I can tell, Asya wanted to go with them, not the other way 'round. I don't know why. But I do wanna get her thoughts on the subject, she's a sharp kid." Dimitri commented. He crouched down to be on eye level again, with his ex-girlfriend. "Listen, that golden stuff you saw. 'Scalled ichor. Stuff's the blood of godly bein's. Whatever was down there before us, it bled. I've only seen the stuff one other time, and it wasn't nearly as much as was in that ocean." Dimitri sighed, and grabbed her hand one more time. "Look, I'm gettin' kinda worried you're gonna try'n get involved in this. I know you, Alannah. I need'ya to promise me that you'll pretend I never showed up in Boston. This ain't the life you want. This ain't the life anyone wants."

"Don't need to worry about me trying to get involved, honey, I already am." Alannah laughed. She steeled herself and looked out the window instead of him. "They're not bad people, Ocean's Eleven. We try to keep young people outta trouble. Those Frogmen," she continued with a slight grimace, turning to face him, "are a bunch of fairly awful people. Have some Harry Potter-style ideas about supernatural beings exposing themselves to the rest of the world and getting back at the humans for making us stay in hiding so long. In a way, I sorta get them, ya feel? I mean, if my boss knew about my weekly bath, she probably wouldn't be so mystified by my stubbornness regarding that one day off a week, but I also don't think any good will come of it." She smiled thinly. "Too many movies about too many people killing too many things they don't understand, right?"

Freeing herself from Dimitri's gentle grip on her hand, she scooted over in her bed, wincing when the sore skin was pushed against the mattress. She gave it a gentle pat.

"Ya don't have to nap in the ocean, right? Bed's available." She smiled again. "Just like it was during your first hangover. Don't think you ever looked sorrier, huh?" He was pale, had dark rims around his eyes, and his lively hair was hanging down as if it, too, needed a nap. "Let's just take it easy 'till the morning, hm? We'll investigate this - eyecore stuff and your mystery girl. Get in touch with Lola, the leader of OE. Okay?"

"I don't really think..." Dimitri was able to see the complications in staying the night with Alannah in general, it would only end up worse if he slept in the same bed as her. He would be in just the same amount of trouble in the morning no matter what he did. Even now, just crouched down, he felt like he could fall asleep. He had the thought in his mind that he could tough it out and go back into the ocean, despite the exhaustion. It wouldn't be the first time. In the moment, his judgement faltered while he looked at Alannah. They were both so tired and exhausted. Looking at her, and the spot next to her, it almost felt like so much time hadn't passed. It was like they were still together.

Dimitri kicked his boots off. "Sorry..." He muttered. He never kept his footwear on inside of someone's home; it was just rude. But in the heat of the moment, he hadn't even remembered he was wearing them. He was just too concerned when he got into her apartment to think about it. Dimitri slowly lowered himself onto the spot next to her, looking towards her. There was so many important pieces of the puzzle to get through. "I don't understand... you know 'bout these people?" Dimitri asked. He would never hear her answer though, as the second his eyes close, he lost consciousness.

--------------------

He couldn't be sure exactly what happened, but when Dimitri's eyes crept open the next morning, he was on his side facing his ex-girlfriend. Dimitri had tried to gather his emotions together, but it was too surreal, it felt as though the past two years had been a dream he was just waking up from. "Mornin', darlin'." Dimitri remarked, quietly.

As soon as her eyes drowsily slid open, they set upon a sight so familiar that it should have startled her to see again.

"Mornin'," she mumbled, lifting a hand to rub the worst of the sleep out of her eyes, only realizing when it drifted back to its original position that it had been resting on Dimitri's waist. She smiled, just the smallest little curve of her lips. She would allow herself to pretend that no one had broken up with anyone for perfectly logical reasons for just a moment longer.

Eventually, though, nature had to run its course, and Alannah left the bed in pursuit of the bathroom instead. "You know where the kettle is, make yourself some instant, eh?" Even after they'd stopped dating, she'd kept some in her cupboard. For no reason, really. Just because. Not like you hoped he'd ditch his crazy pops and come running back to you, no, not at aaaaall, said the voice in the back of her mind, who seemed to be rather irritated with her on the topic of her ex-boyfriend. Alannah imagined flushing the tiny, self-righteous version of herself out. It was oddly satisfying.

Picking out her overall skirt and a striped t shirt to go with it, she padded barefoot into her small kitchen and began rummaging through the fridge. "Don't even have eggs," she mumbled to herself, not at all willing to admit how much she enjoyed the feelings of domesticity that were washing over her along with the smell of dissolving, freeze dried coffee. Pushing the fridge door shut with her foot, she reached up in a cupboard to take out the box of Cheerios that was lurking in there.

"Right, so, Ocean's Eleven. Think I explained it last night, too, butcha didn't look like you were listenin'," she said, grinning as she poured milk on the cereal and plucked a spoon from the drawer. "Y'see, they're - we're - kinda like guidance counselors. Lotsa youngsters these days don't get why they should hide their powers. More supernaturals run away from home than they used to. God, I feel old sayin' that," she snickered, waving the spoon at him, accidentally sending a Cheerio-loop sailing through the air. "Oops. Well, anyhoo, we try to sniff them out before they do some stupid things and get caught doing things humans can't, y'know? And Lola's real nice, talks to them and things, tries to get the more rebellious ones to get back on the secret path. Which means your little friend would be of interest to them, can't have her just running around."

The mermaid took a last thoughtful scoop of her breakfast, placed the spoon between her teeth and managed to look both pensive and ridiculous as she stared out the window with the handle sticking upwards from her mouth. "And then there's the dead fish and the ichor..." she said, lisping slightly because of the spoon. She put her bowl in the sink and turned to Dimitri. "Mind explaining that before we go see Lola?"

Dimitri felt the general sensations of waking up early; somewhat heavy eyes, a need to stretch, and a desire to nod off for just a while longer. There were a few differences to the usual, however. For one, he could tell it wasn't nearly as early as usual, a result of being exausted. He wondered exactly what he would have done if Alannah hadn't invited him to stay the night. He felt a distant soreness throughout his body, though he figured it couldn't be nearly as bad as that ichor had been. After standing up, he'd only caught a glimpse of Alannah before she was gone into the bathroom. He felt an old fondness of the mermaid wash over him. He'd never forgotten the bond they had, but experiencing her kindness again made Dimitri guilty.

The last thing she would want was the waterworks, Dimitri figured. Ironic. He figured, that a mermaid wouldn't want to see the tears. It wasn't like he could simply say something that would fix years of absence. Dimitri fumbled around the cabinets, a strange feeling of nostalgia filled Dimitri's veins. They were different. He had seen things he'd never thought he'd have to look at when they were a couple. After everything Nereus had forced him into, he knew he wasn't the same. Although Alannah had slightly aged since they had last met, he recognized everything about her still. He wondered what she had been up to and if she had changed either.

The coffee was brewing, which only left Dimitri to his thoughts for a short moment. He hadn't realized how much he had missed life being just this. His attention quickly averted to the figure entering the room. Dimitri kept his spot, leaning by the stove top. "Yeah, sorry 'bout that." Dimitri admitted. He felt slightly embarrassed, but he was so exhausted that he practically had passed out next to her. He elected not to speak, and to just let her finish what she had to say. He'd poured his somewhat fresh coffee into a mug and took a gulp of it. The sensation of heat against his throat still didn't bother him. The taste was bland and bitter, but it riddled him with the old memories when this was home.

The demigod's expression shifted into a half-grin when a Cheerio practically shot into the air. He squatted down to pick up the lone cereal grain, and promptly glanced at Alannah before popping it into his mouth. He had typically carried a more serious attitude, but inside these walls, he felt he wasn't being watched. "I can see why they gotta do what they do." Dimitri replied after giving it some thought. "Asya ain't like that though. She's maybe just a 'lil more quirky than your average kid, but she's smart. She ain't gonna do anythin' that'll get'her into trouble." Dimitri paused, promptly shrugging his shoulders. "I mean, at least any trouble she don't think she can handle. She's smart, but sometimes that just ain't 'nough. If things didn't work out between her and this Lola person, I would take her with me if I had to." Dimitri's words were true felt, but he knew somewhere deep down that he didn't want to take her from Boston. Leading her away from a safe haven would be the worst thing for her, and he knew that.

Dimitri's grin now began to evaporate, he wished he didn't have to be truthful with Alannah about what happened in the ocean, but he knew he didn't have it in him to lie to her. "Ichor is what flows through the veins of stronger bein's. Y'know, the gods and all of their 'impressive' friends." Dimitri mocked. "We have blood, they have ichor. There's a grey line between all've it, but the biggest detail is that their blood is toxic. I thought I was gonna lose you when you touched it." Dimitri admitted, he couldn't help but feel somewhat shaken by it all when he actually mentioned the words back to himself. "The fish, they probably were attracted to it. I couldn't tell ya why. But I can say that whatever happened down there ain't good. Gods don't bleed from gettin' tangled in seaweed. Somethin' bad happened down there."

The Cheerio's break for freedom did not last long before it was recaptured and ended its days in Dimitri's mouth. Alannah matched his grin despite the worrying things he wasn't really explaining to her. Asya could be the smartest kid in the world; she was still a kid. Gods could bleed; but their blood was toxic, and harming a divine being enough for it to bleed probably caused more trouble than it would solve.

"So we got a kid who isn't good at measuring consequences because she's a kid, just running around out there and the Frogmen want to recruit her for some reason they aren't telling us, and a **** off god poisoning the entire ocean. Fantastic," she said, turning her back on him to rinse off the bowl in the sink and hide her face. Don't say things like that. None of them.

"If you're ready, we should go see Lola. She lives a little ways off." A cheery bleep made Alannah check her phone. "Never mind, she's at the center. Let's go, yeah?"

The 'center' for the Ocean's Eleven weren't so much a center as it was a re-purposed two-bedroom apartment over a Chinese restaurant. Most of the walls had been torn down, leaving a small bathroom as the only place where one could have complete privacy. The previous bedrooms had been merged with the living room, forming a comfortable and rather spacious area containing a number of comfy chairs, a couch with a rumpled blanket on, a bookshelf with a number of items that weren't books, and a TV. A dark-skinned woman wearing a bright yellow hijab was watching the news, but muted the channel and stood up to face the door immediately when she heard it open.

"Oh, Alannah, it's you," she said, smiling, but sending Dimitri a sharp look all the same. "He doesn't look like a stray youth."

"Well, he did only just earn the privilege to drink in public, so... Nah, he's cool, Lola. One of us," Alannah replied, at which Lola visibly relaxed. She went over to them and extended her hand to Dimitri.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Lola Sayegh." She had a firm handshake. "You're here about Asya. She's in the bathroom right now, brushing her teeth."

"That too, yeah,"
Alannah replied, connecting the dots and noticing that the smell she hadn't been able to place when they entered was probably leftover fried eggs. She looked past Lola and at the TV screen, where a reporter was vigorously, but silently gesturing at the water of the Boston harbor. Alannah paled. Lola pursed her lips and looked grim.

"I think I can guess the other reason you're here."

The grace period that Dimitri had gotten to evaluate the entire situation hadn't made things any more clear for him. Whenever Nereus forced him into these situations, his sleeping arrangements generally weren't comfortable or sentimental. If anything, it possibly made things worse. Involving loved ones into anything Scion-related was "a bigger no-no than having two wives in the same house," according to Nereus. There was the possibility that Alannah, or Asya, could get hurt. Then, the possibility that the Ocean's Eleven would propose conflicting solutions to Nereus's. His father hadn't came to see him since the night at the coffee shop. It was concerning, in the sense that Dimitri had no guidelines about what to do with everything new coming to light. He knew the right thing to do morally would likely align with the Ocean's Eleven, but his hands would be tied to do something else. They always were.

It was organizations like this that got creative, Dimitri could tell, making use of such a camouflaged location. You never knew when higher powers were operating right under you, or in this case, above you. Dimitri kept his expression in check, making sure not to look innocent nor vicious. The demigod was born with virtually no guile, and even now could only lie in times of emergency. He shook her hand, using firmness in his own gesture. He noticed how firm hers was, fierce even, though retaining all the formalities of a handshake. He hadn't met her specifically before, but he could tell that she wasn't someone to underestimate.

He'd almost felt challenged by her, maybe even threatened in a way. Her organization certainly had influence, especially for a place that had to be kept a secret. "Dimitri Midnight. I helped get Asya into Boston. I'm sorry I didn't take'er to one've your people directly. The Frogmen I was with seemed willin' to cooperate with the situation." He replied. No matter how careful he was, he did know Lola constantly made difficult choices to meet the needs of supernatural society but also consider the troubled individual. It was selfless. And, she got to work with Alannah. That ain't jealousy, is it?"

Dimitri's eyes narrowed when he read the headline on the television. He was regretful to know so many people were now looking into this. It would make everything so much more complicated. Some supernaturals didn't even care who they had to kill to remain safe. The headline scrolled, expressing that there was some sort of chemical spill in the ocean, it couldn't be confirmed if oil was involved or not. Dimitri didn't know how much the Ocean's Eleven knew about the situation, and he wasn't supposed to be sharing that he knew there was something down there. But he wasn't sure if that would turn into a two way street.

"There was ichor, in the ocean. Somethin' serious has gotta be goin' on down there. Help me help you." Dimitri, in truth, had a million things he wished to ask, that didn't even relate to the current events. He wanted to ask more about Asya, he'd hoped she was settling in well, and he wanted to ask more about Lola, but the stress of the situation was enormous to Dimitri. He could hardly stand to think about anything else.

"The Frogmen would be willing to cooperate with anyone if it means exposing us all, damn the consequences," Lola practically snarled and sat stiffly down on the couch in what was probably a very demonstrative gesture for her. Alannah had never been quite certain. She always seemed so determined to never lose her calm, but with someone as passionate as her, it must have been a very slippery knife's edge to walk. Lola took a few deep breaths and gestured to the couch opposite her with all the grace and command of a queen. Alannah immediately sat down.

"Ichor is very serious, you're right about that," Lola said. "But I don't understand what you, specifically, can do to help us clean this mess up. What is your supernatural connection? I assume that you know that Alannah is a mermaid. I am unfortunately unrelated to water myself, but it seems Asya has some sort of connection with it." Lola rolled her eyes. "She has been 'brushing her teeth' for ten minutes now. I will bet you she's making the water from the tap run upwards right now, being very wasteful," Lola continued with a slightly raised voice. A splash and a nervous giggle could be faintly heard from behind the bathroom door. Alannah couldn't help but smile.

Lola folded her hands around her knees. "We all know that normal humans aren't likely to be able to get rid of the ichor. Gods don't bleed for no reason - if we don't find the root of the cause, it will return, and keep returning."

"Well, we've actually been down there," Alannah broke in and held out her bright pink hand. Lola raised an eyebrow. "I got this. I - I touched the ichor, it was really stupid, but Dimitri was there to sa- help me. I don't remember much..." She frowned. "There were dead fish all over. And did we - did we find a set of teeth? We found something, didn't we?" She looked at Dimitri, hoping he could fill in the blanks of her unimpressive account. The longer that passed after touching the ichor, the more like an idiot she felt for doing so. Her cheeks were turning just as pink as her hand with embarrassment, and she withdrew it and pulled her jacket sleeve over it.

"I'm sure they have their reasons." Dimitri replied to the woman. He wasn't keen on condoning or endorsing a faction like the Frogmen. He was sure they had good people, but it was rare for the individual to matter when they served the many. He was happy to see Lola was closer to an open book than anything else. Open could often mean trustworthy, and that trait lead to others like it. He couldn't help but smile at the woman. He felt tense still, but he wasn't going to deny her invitation to sit. Dimitri listened to the light dialogue between the pair, it was difficult to distinguish if their bond was closer to friendship or serving the same team.

He had taken the seat on the couch, he was sure many serious things were discussed on what looked like it could just as easily fit in a living room on the outskirts of a suburb. When Alannah looked to him to confirm her story, he was more than happy to answer the call for her. He dug into his back-pocket, and revealed it. You could almost feel the ocean when touching it, similar to the sensation when holding a conch recently taken from the beach. "It's some kinda comb, lil' big for most people." He commented, leaning to hand it to Lola. He was hopeful she might know something about it.

"Normally I'd say it was just somethin' someone who could go underwater made. Might even be some kinda civilization under there. But the shells, they ain't brittle." Dimitri flicked the comb with his index finger to demonstrate. Something like this clearly should have been flimsy, yet, this could survive a drop from a tall building. He leaned forward, handing the comb to Lola. "It was right by the Ichor. I don't wanna believe that's a coincidence."

Lola took the comb, examining it; her yellow-green eyes scrutinized every millimeter of it, her slender fingers slid over the taps of the comb, but no flicker of recognition appeared on her face.

"I don't know what this is, and I don't really know of anyone who would," she said. Alannah's face fell. She had never thought of Lola as some sort of fountain of magical knowledge, but she usually knew what to do or where to go, and this defeat, so openly admitted, punctured her enthusiasm. She opened her mouth, but never got the chance to say something before Lola continued.

"I think your best bet is to go to a library," she said, thoughtfully. "Although no one believe we supernatural creatures really exist, books remain rife with folk tales and myths from regions all over the world. I know that's a lot," Lola said with a small smile, correctly interpreting Alannah's alarmed expression, "but you only have to look for stories related to the ocean. That already narrows it down quite a bit! And you can take Asya with you, if she wants to go," she added in a slightly louder voice, to make herself heard over the splashing sounds that could still be heard from the bathroom. "A little reading would only do her good."

She turned to Dimitri and continued, this time much softer, "truth be told, I think she's going a little nuts from being cooped up in here. We aren't always that many here, and I haven't let her go very far outside, and never alone. I'm sure she'd want to talk to you again, not to mention relish the chance to get away from the house. Tap water can only entertain you for so long."

Lola rose and stretched, looking down at Dimitri and Alannah with her imperial gaze. "I believe I've done what I can for you. We have some books here, and I'll see if I can't find anything in them while you are gone. Please, take Asya with you, but return her later tonight. Not necessarily by midnight, she isn't a princess in any way," she added and rolled her eyes, which seemed comically out of place in her usual stern expression, "but I'd like her to sleep here. Thank you for your time." And with that, she turned to the tall shelves at the far end of the room, and no longer paid any mind to the mermaid and demi-god.

Alannah looked uncertainly at Dimitri. She felt vaguely uneasy at the thought of having to entertain a tween; having never had younger siblings (or any siblings at all), how to behave around children without making them bored or frustrated was a daunting task to her.

"There's lotsa libraries up by the Common," she said, picking up the comb that Lola had left on the coffee table in front of them. It looked quite ordinary and new, save for its extreme sturdiness, and the fact that Alannah was certain it was the oldest thing she'd ever laid eyes on. Why she felt like that, she didn't know. She, too, rose from her seat, and went to knock on the bathroom door.

"Asya?"

Lola was certainly an optimistic figure, it was no wonder she'd reached a point of leadership within the Ocean's Eleven. "Thank you, Lola. We'll keep her safe." Dimitri felt a loose worry fade away. Asya hadn't been the priority of his worries, not with everything else going on, but it was nice to know that she was with a good person. He didn't know her very long, but it seemed like if Asya was being a handful, it meant she was comfortable enough to be herself.

The bathroom door opened up abruptly, only a single moment after Asya's name was mentioned, without so much as a toilet flush to even pretend she was using the bathroom in there. The short preteen looked Alannah up and down, sizing her up as if she was spotting a bear in the woods. "You're the mermaid!" She nearly exclaimed in glee. Her expression then changed, from analyzing a threat, to clearly trying to imagine what she might look like with a tail instead of legs. "He told me about you." Asya said, pointing briefly at Dimitri. "Then she did too," Her index finger swapped to Lola, who was clearly attending other matters. "But they had very different talking points." She finished with a tone that almost begged of curiosity.

"Hey. Causin' trouble?" Dimitri approached Asya. He gave a grin to Alannah, surely their newfound partner would be breaking any single moment of silence that came within the group.

"No." She replied, she clearly wasn't trying to convince anyone that it was the truth. "Well, you have to do a better job defining 'trouble.' No one is hurt, damaged, or in any situation or predicament that worsens their arrangements or engagements than they were before I arrived." She declared, pleased with herself. "You were right! She is 'very pretty.'" She mimicked his southern accent when she quoted him, the same smile on her face, like she was donating to charity.

"C'mon, 'snough of that." Dimitri grinned. He already felt like he was babysitting. At least she was a good kid.

"Okay." She pouted, before promptly springing back into her normal behavior. "What library are we going to- Oh! That's the comb thingy you were talking about! Let me see it!" She held her hand out to Alannah, with a sweet smile on her face, as though eavesdropping was a nice thing to do to someone.

Alannah's first thought was that Asya certainly wasn't one to waste time, and she had to laugh as she quickly snatched the comb out of the girl's reach.

"Ooooh, no, not so fast," she chuckled, but handed the comb to Asya none the less, as a small frown came over the girl's face. "I was thinking we start at the public library," Alannah continued, "although that's in the opposite direction from what I mentioned." Asya was quickly done examining the comb (truth be told, it wasn't a terribly interesting item), and she vaulted over the back of a chair, throwing the comb to Dimitri with a quick "catch!", before landing sideways and heavily in the seat. She grinned at Dimitri.

"Can't we talk her out of that library? Can't we just go swimming again? I'd like to see that ichor for myself too."

"I'll getcha a milkshake or somethin'," Alannah said, also grinning at Dimitri. "Very pretty, huh?" She was feeling a little too pleased with herself at that smallest of compliments, she knew it, but there was no harm in that. The self-righteous voice in her head remained quiet; obviously, it had given up on trying to make her see sense. "Let's just go, all right? First we read, then I'll bribe ya," she said, grabbing her light jacket from the back of the chair Asya was occupying. It was still only March, after all, and although she never felt cold underwater, she wasn't exactly planning to swim to the library. "The sooner we get started, the better. I dunno about you two, but although Lola says we're not, I still feel like this is a needle-in-a-haystack type of hunt."

Dimitri caught the comb tossed at him, his reflexes were getting better. Of course, they couldn't be good enough to see the hot coffee Nereus threw at him days earlier. Dimitri was ready to go, and especially glad he had Alannah with him. She was good company, but she also knew Boston inside and out. The layout of the city was absolutely daunting to him.

-----

Libraries weren't a location Dimitri was used to. Nereus usually fed him whatever it was he needed to know, and send him on his way. It had truly been ages since he last sought to seek knowledge from the pen. This library in particular was wild, full of all kinds of people, and vast sections of information. The walls were all shades of green, complimenting the floors, colors, and furniture. People really took care of this place, which almost surprised Dimitri. He was carefully combing through books with his eyes, there were only so many titles that would be useful to them. "Needle in a haystack's an understatement." Dimitri mumbled.

Asya was combing through books rapidly, using her finger as a guide. Dimitri failed to believe she was actually reading each title. "It isn't Greek, Roman, Aztecan, or Egyptian. I don't believe it's from any ancient civilizations from China or Japan either." She stated in a matter-of-fact tone. Clearly, she was able to read Dimitri's puzzled expression, based on her explanation. "What? I read a lot." She shrugged the look off, like water off of a duck's back.

Dimitri continued to comb, he spotted a few books that looked like they might be useful in the search. Ocean Folklore, Untold Stories of The Ocean, and A Wiccan's Guide to Water were the three books that sprung to him. "What's a Wiccan?" Dimitri asked to the two girls with him. He piled the books in his hands, gesturing to a table for them to read their finds.
