WANTED:
Band member. Skill with instrument welcome
but if you can't sing then don't even bother.

A date and address was scrawled under the short print, penned in with a black sharpie. The paper was slapped against a telephone post and hastily stapled before the boy pushed off again on his skateboard.

“Nobody is gonna show,” his friend said, rolling on his own board on the opposite side of the street, stapling his own stack. “These ads look like your six-year-old sister designed them.”

“Who gives a **** what they look like Peter?” Adam snapped. “We need someone to shout into a mic. What more do they need to know?” Besides, he spent all night penning these up. Nobody else would do it. ****ing pricks.

Peter and Adam had been friends their entire life. They had always been trouble-makers. Grade school was spent playing pranks on the girls and throwing wadded up, dried sponges into toilets and flushing them down. They often had a lot of free time, having spent many a detention together, and sharing a suspension from school at least once a year. They learned to play instruments, Peter juggling the drumsticks and Adam picking at a guitar. When they weren't making noise in Peter's garage, one might find them skating around town with spray paint or otherwise.

Peter snorted at him and checked his watch. “It's almost seven thirty. If I'm late again I'll get detention after school and I'll be late for practice.” Also, they were the kings of tardiness. While the other seniors were busied writing their cover letters and applying for university, Peter and Adam were hard at work trying to book venues for their band, lovingly named Buckshot. Only problem was, they had been sadly unsuccessful since their vocalist, Cady Felton, quit the band after dumping Peter for some rich prick.

Adam laughed out loud as they turned the corner and rounded back toward their high school. “Afraid of writing a few lines?” Peter rolled his eyes.

They parted ways at school, Peter making his way to the locker rooms for gym, while Adam stuffed his hands down his pockets and walked in the opposite direction to his first hour class: Chemistry.

“Detention, Mr. Key,” the teacher droned routinely. The old woman, Mrs Ford, was luckily forgetful, and it seemed to escape her notice that Adam hadn't showed up for detention since the school year began. He took his seat at one of the lab tables near the back, propped his head up on his fist, and stared out the window as Ford drilled them on the intricacies of the Bunsen burner.

Sasha was a straight A student. Always did her homework, was part of the popular clique, and was always homecoming and Prom queen. She was part of every club, including drama. She did every sport and every theater production. She was perfect in every way.

Every day she would wake up, do her hair, put on something pastel and head to school. Thai morning, she caught a glimpse of a flyer for auditions to be in a band. She made a note on the time and place and headed to school so she wasn't late. She got to class just in time for Chemistry. She sat in her usual place in the middle of the room, her books spread wide and neatly over her table. She scrawled away as she took notes. She was usually the only person in any of her classes that actually paid attention. She knew that she was going somewhere with her life and she wasn't planning on getting rid of it all. The idea of the band audition burned in the back of her mind. She was a great singer, and by the looks of the flyer, the band was desperate. She heard about Buckshot once or twice, but not a lot. They were decent.

Sasha looked up and saw Adam walk in late as always. She drew her attention back to her notes. Once the bell rang she moved and put her things in her bag and headed for the door, the slip of flyer falling out from her bag as she walked. She realized it had dropped and went to pick it up hastily so nobody would see what she was planning on doing after school.

Adam began doodling in his lab notebook about half-way into the lesson. He was a shite artist, but he didn’t think he could take another moment of Mrs Ford’s monotone. Chemistry was unbelievably boring. Momentarily his eyes wandered, and of course landed on her. Sasha. She was probably the smartest girl at their school, but he didn’t think she ever had any fun. What did she do with her day besides scribble notes and… well… girly things? She was easy on the eyes, at least.

Eventually, the bell snapped him out of a would-be nap. He rose and stretched, picked up his notebook and made to exit the classroom.
“Lab partners tomorrow!” The old woman crowed over their heads. Adam groaned. The last thing he needed was a lab partner. He prayed he wouldn’t get paired with some nerdy kid. He watched a scrawny ginger boy with a massive backpack scramble out of the door, almost bumping into Sasha, and shuddered. Anyone but him.

He caught Sasha dropping something on the floor, and she scooped it up quickly as if it were an adult magazine. She stuffed it into her bag and left. That was weird. He shrugged, and continued into the hallway with the rest of the tools populating it. His next class was thankfully with Peter, who joined him near the stairwell. Adam wrinkled his nose at him.

“Did you shower?”
“Nope,” Peter grinned.
“You’re nasty, dude. You know that? You know who doesn’t shower? Freshmen. And you just stooped to their level.”

Calculus was more enjoyable than Chemistry. Their teacher was the exact opposite of Mrs Ford- he was young and enthusiastic, and at least he kept things interesting. Peter was actually quite good with numbers. The two had developed a sort of morse code by tapping their pens on their desk. Adam, who sat behind him, would always prod his back when he needed an answer. Peter responded by scratching his ear and then tapping his pencil with the answer. It was genius. It was beautiful. And it was the only class Adam had a passing grade in.

After Calculus, it was already time for lunch, and Adam was starving. They were on the first floor, however, and the lunch room was located on the ground floor. Already, herds of fourteen-year-olds had bumrushed the lunch lines. Thankfully, Adam knew he was bigger than them. They chose a spot close to the front and climbed over the metal bars which confined the hungry students.
“Hey!” a kid complained at him. Adam just smirked back, almost daring him to do something about it. The kid was shy, and just glared at his back, unwilling to say anything more. They collected their lunch and decided to eat outside for a change.

They instantly regretted that decision.

“What’s this?” Their flyer was shoved into their faces. It was Cady, Peter’s ex, and the reason their band had recently tanked. “Aww, can’t swim without me? You know, nobody is going to want to join your crappy garage stunt. And even if there is, they’ll never be as good as I was. Too bad.” She threw her blonde hair back and flashed Peter the most pathetic look he’d ever seen. She’d even pushed out her bottom lip in mock-pout.

“I’m actually glad you quit, your voice started getting really scratchy after George was shoving his c--,”

Adam was cut off abruptly when George appeared and shoved him down. He reeled back and the back of his head hit the door with dizzying force. His vision went fuzzy, but he could tell there was a small crowd forming.

“You wanna finish that?” George dared him. Adam wanted to laugh. George’s dad owned a dealership. It was more than likely he was paying Cady to be his girlfriend. The guy was a gorilla.

“Honey, you were never ‘good’,” Peter chipped in, helping Adam up, “I asked her the same question for months. She never did finish.”
Adam could kiss him. The scowl on Cady's face was priceless.

“C’mon, let’s just bail. Don’t feel like throwing punches today,” Adam hissed in Peter’s ear, and the boy nodded in agreement. They both brushed off their jeans and walked away, the disappointed crowd parting to let them through.

“That’s right, pansies,” George howled after them in triumph.

Sasha was in the lunchroom when she heard the scuffle going on outside, she sat with her popular friends of course. The fight got her attention mostly when George shoved a boy really hard. She wanted to break it up, but nobody would listen to a short girl like her. She was usually looked down on literally and figuratively.

Sasha sighed as she exited the cafeteria and to the music room where she sat and played the piano. It was her favorite thing to do. Sit in that room of only her and play away.

The rest of his classes were a blur. Gym came after lunch, and he spent his last hour in Economics. Though Adam was quite active, he wasn't always first pick in sports. He was skinny, not athletic like all the heartthrobs the ladies gushed over. His faded Def Leppard t-shirt hung loosely off his shoulders and gave no evidence if there were any muscles to be found underneath. He never styled his hair or dressed any particular way, at least, not anything outside his usual misfit self. His skin was pale and no matter how long he spent in the sun he would forever sport a dungeon tan. The only thing he ever bothered to do with his appearance was to stretch out the piercings in his ears so he could wear plugs. Peter “acquired” a tattoo gun when they turned eighteen, and they of course gave each other god-awful tats. He was not proud of it.

He'd never had a girlfriend, either. It didn't bother him, though. He'd always been a bit of a loser, and long since made peace with it.

He couldn't have left school faster. He shred across the student parking, and lit up a cigarette after falling into a steady balance on his board. He would need to make a stop at home to get his guitar before he met with Peter for auditions. If there was anything he hated more about his day, it was being at home. “Home” was a tiny flat in the trashy part of town, the kind that didn't allow pets but everyone kept one anyway. Every time he walked through that door, he was reminded of why he avoided it so much.

“Adam!” his mother came stumbling at him from the kitchen and wrapped her arms around his waist. “You're home already, I missed you so much, how was school?” It was noon and she was already drunk. He recoiled as she kissed him on the cheek with her rancid whiskey breath, her hair ambushing the side of his face with sticky, excessive hair spray.

“It happened,” he answered dismissively, brushing past her and trying to access his room as quickly as possible. He paused before his sister's room, peering inside and frowning. “Where's Dani? You were supposed to pick her up today.”

“Oh she's alright, Paul is getting her,” she said, seemingly unconcerned by the fact that she was leaving her six-year-old daughter in the care of her abusive boyfriend. Adam turned and collected his guitar case, slinging it over his shoulder, and then stormed through the flat again, much to his mother's dismay.

“Where are you going, Adam?”

“Like you give a damn,” he seethed, shutting the door loudly on his way out.

Once he reached Peter's, he let himself into the garage, where he was already tapping away at his drum set. Peter knew better than to make any remarks about his home life, so he simply toyed with the percussion to Sammy Hagar's “I Can't Drive 55” while Adam tuned his guitar. Now they played the waiting game, trying out different rhythms in the meantime. Neither of them expected who was about to show up.

The rest of her classes went by fast for Anya. She went home after the bell had rung to collect herself.

Too be honest, Sasha was nervous. She rarely sang in front of people and when she did it was just her friends or during a musical. She let out a sigh before taking her paper out of the bag and looking at it. She grabbed her keys and got into her car following the address. She came into the less fortunate side of town and parked the car in front of a garage filled with only two boys. She had seen the two in school and wasn't surprised that they had their own band. She turned the car off, turned off the lights and stepped out of the vehicle. She knew that they were going to probably laugh in her face. A popular coming to an outcast was unheard of. But she did anyway. She entered the garage, her heels clicking as she walked.

"Is this where the auditions are...?" Sasha asked softly. She held up the flyer to show the boys. She tried not to look at their dumbfounded gazes but she couldn't avoid it.

Adam and Peter were beginning to despair their campaign would yield no results for the day. Two hours had already passed, and they were about to break out the homebrew zig zags and call it when a little car turned up and parked in front of the garage. At first, their attention was brief and only mildly surprised, but when they saw it was Sasha who stepped out and approached, their shock was tangible. Peter missed three beats and then suspended his stick on the cymbal, and Adam simply stopped playing as his cigarette fell out of his mouth. They shared a look that said it all: What the **** is she doing here? In heels, no less.

It was Peter who collected himself enough to answer her question.

“Yeah, it is. You… didn't come to audition, did you?” He shot another glance at Adam, who was still staring at her in disbelief. He threw a penny coin at his head to snap him out of it. It struck him on the ear and Adam finally stood up and stepped on the cigarette to snuff it out.

“Can you sing?” Adam asked her. He knew she could play the piano- he'd heard her sometimes, when he passed the music room. Sometimes he would linger and listen, but that was his secret.

Sasha looked at the boys. She knew that they would be in shock. And they deserved to. A pretty and popular girl, with outcasts was strange.

Sasha nodded. Her brown hair bobbed softly. She stepped up to a microphone turned it on and started to sing "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leopard. She sang it acapella. No music to drown her voice out. Everything was on key. Her voice was as if she was an angel in disguise. She usually sang without music to be able to hear herself sing. She hit every note perfectly when she sang. Once she was done, she looked at Peter and Adam. She could see the shock in their eyes.

"So...?" Was all she could say as she stared at them and waited for their answer.

He had to say, he was pleasantly surprised, not only by her voice, but by the fact she was even familiar with the song. He figured a girl like her would listen to, say, Madonna, or Prince. Besides, he really liked Def Leppard, and fully approved of the choice. Needless to say, they both were fairly impressed, but Adam knew they needed to test her a little bit. Adam started strumming some chords, and Peter immediately picked up on the tune and followed along.

"Jump In The Fire?" he prompted her.

This routine continued for almost another hour, switching the songs from Metallica to Whitesnake, then to AC/DC and even some Starship. After the first few songs, he stopped playing to test her, and at that point was simply enjoying her voice. Finally they decided to break, and he offered Sasha some water.

"Alright, I think we're convinced. But it has to be said- where did you learn to sing like a shedevil?" Adam grinned boyishly.

"She makes Cady sound like a Jersey hooker," Peter chipped in enthusiastically.

Sasha enjoyed their little test. She knew that they were just being a bit cautious with their choice but she seemed to be impressing them. A smile formed on her face as she took the water. She laughed at Peter's remark. "I taught myself." She smiled.

Sasha glanced down at her heels and then back up at the boys. "Surprised that a girl like me would actually do this?" She chuckled to herself softly.

She was a bit surprised herself to be honest. But she liked hanging out with these guys. They weren't so fake and plastic, they were real human beings.

“Surprised?” Adam almost choked on his own water. “Surprised doesn't even begin to cover it. I thought you were...” he trailed off, searching for the right word. “Well, anyway, I hope you don't mind being seen with a couple of dickheads like us, I think we'd like to keep you.”

“Dickhead is my middle name,” Peter agreed playfully.

“Leslie is your middle name,” Adam corrected him.

“How about I take my middle finger and-”

“Aaaaand with that,” Adam announced loudly, bringing his hands together in a satisfied clap, “How does tomorrow sound? We'll introduce you to some of our own brew see what you make of it, Tiny?”

Yes. He'd already nicknamed her. Little did she know, he would be testing her on quite a few fronts. Before now she was just that pretty, smart, and absolutely out-of-his-league girl. But now, she was that girl who was still out of his league, and who he could now hang out with. Inside, he was celebrating.

Sasha watched as the boys joked with each other. She enjoyed it. She didn't get to see much of this when she hung out with her friends. They were always so serious and snobby. In a way, she kind of understand how they felt towards the popular crowd. She'd be mad too if she was in their shoes.

Sasha nodded. She noted a the nickname and gave a small giggle.

"Yeah that sounds good to me." She smiled at Peter and gave a small wave. She turned her attention to Adam. She felt her face grow a little bit hot when she made eye contact. She found a piece of paper and wrote down her address and number for him and slipped it into his hand. She gave a small and shy wave to him. "Bye Adam..." She turned and clicked her way back into the car, started it up and pulled out and back to her house.

Back at home, Sasha was greeted by her mother.

"Where were you?" She asked softly. She wasn't really worried about her daughter, but she liked to know where she was just in case something bad were to happen to her.

"I was out with Natalie." Sasha lied so she wouldn't have her mom know. She knew that she was never going to approve of her hanging out with outcasts. But Sasha didn't care. They may be not as well of as her family was, but they were still people with feelings. She smiled and went up to her room to start on some homework she tossed to the side.

There was no word in the English language which could describe the feeling of holding a pretty girl's phone number in his hand. So, instead, when Sasha left, Adam turned to Peter and flashed him the biggest shit-eating grin he could muster. Peter's only response was an unintelligible mumble about asking for Jenny.

Of course, it had him humming the devilspawned Tommy Tutone earworm all the way home.

The next morning, he was determined to arrive to school on time for once in his life. Maybe it was because he knew he would see Sasha in Chemistry, or simply because he found himself unable to sleep over his mother's obnoxious moaning in the room over. Whatever the reason, he made quick work of his shower- which was cold, because he couldn't have nice things- and threw on the first set of clothes he found. Adam joined his sister, Danielle, in the kitchen (if one could call it that) and searched the cupboards for something that wasn't booze. Dani managed to find some Cheerios, but it must have been from the bottom of the bag since it was 90% sawdust mixed in with her milk.

He could probably hear Paul's snoring from Bangladesh. It was evident he would be late. Again.

“Come on Dani. I'll walk you to school,” he told her with a disappointed sigh. Usually, their mother would drive Dani to school in the morning, because her school was on the farther end of town, and there were no bus routes which would pass through their area for whatever reason. If she didn't, Adam didn't trust Paul with his sister, and had no choice but to take her himself. He tucked his board under his arm and took Dani's hand in the other.

When he did finally arrive, it was already twenty minutes past the first bell.

“Detention, Mr. Key,” announced his entrance like a bell over a door. He walked right past Sasha to his usual spot near the back.

“Now that we're all here,” the old woman declared, a few muffled laughs scattered across the room, “Everyone pair up. Be fast about it, we have a lot to do.”

Crap, he thought. He'd forgotten entirely about the whole lab partner business. His eyes peered around warily, and caught the scrawny ginger kid looking his way and gathering his books in preparation to move. CRAP.

That night, Sasha smiled as she fell asleep.

In the morning Sasha woke up early and got herself ready. Once in Chemistry she took her regular seat and glanced back to see that Adam wasn't in class. She sighed softly and just as they were about to choose partners, he walked in. She smiled softly, a hint of blush crept to her face.

Sasha noticed that the ginger was staring down Adam. She turned before they went off and talked to the kid. After a moment, she smiled and nodded and walked to Adam and sat next to him in the back. She leaned over and whispered.

"You're welcome for saving you." She smirked to herself and glanced at him.

“My hero,” he joked, “You know I'm probably the last person you would want to be graded with. I have an F in this class. That usually doesn't change.” Adam felt a little guilty for admitting it, but he didn't want to lie to her. Everyone knew Sasha was what one might consider a model student, which was a modest way of saying her GPA needed a scale of its own. Adam was as far from that as one could get. His record was a mess of failed classes, tardies, truancies, suspensions, and was well on its way to the bin. He didn't think Sasha deserved that.

Mrs Ford explained the lab assignment to the class, and to Adam she may as well have been speaking Klingon. If he didn't understand something, it tended to be awfully dull, and things that were dull didn't deserve his attention. He opened his “lab journal”, which was filled with lyrics and messes of ink where he had crossed things out and changed them. At least the old woman couldn't call him out from across the room with his book opened up. So, he did this, and watched Sasha.

He didn't at all think she was a “nerd” or a “bookworm”. In fact, he envied his peers who managed to give a damn earlier in their lives. He wished he had. He might be in a better position than he was now. He was a lost cause, but sitting right in front of him was someone he not only found impossibly attractive, but someone he wished he could be as good as. He wondered how things might have been different if he didn't **** away his earlier years. He wondered if he could have been someone cool, like a quarterback, or class president. He wondered if he could have made it into a good Uni.

Dwelling on what could have been made him miserable. Adam zoned out enough that he found himself staring down at his pen.

Sasha saw that Adam wasn't paying attention much and wondered if she should help him. She saw the frequent look of confusion on his face and smiled softly. A smile of understanding rather than pity. She scooted closer to him and glanced at the journal filled with lyrics, she read a few and then shut his book. She slid him a piece of paper meant for notes.
"Write down notes. At the end of class you get your journal back." This was something she learned a while ago. Take away a kids play thing and then they'll pay attention.

"Ask me for help if you need it." She smiled at him and returned to her own work.

“Yes, mother,” Adam gave her a little salute. Is she serious? He peered down at the blank sheet of paper she'd replaced his notebook with. He tapped his pen on the table impatiently. “Taking notes” was not something he did, ever. What was he supposed to note on? He couldn't understand a word Mrs Ford said to begin with. Something, something, pH balance. She started drawing some kind of line on her chalkboard, and without even looking down, Adam started pulling his pen across the page in a similar fashion. He wrote numbers across it.

Honestly he had no idea what it was supposed to mean. Something on one side was acidic and the other was called alkaline. He scribbled “mushrooms?” under the acid side. He tapped his pen impatiently again and eyed the clock. Class was almost over, at least.

“So, partner, how am I supposed to build fireworks with this?” he indicated the uneven line on the paper, smiling. “Or is this less exciting? I think she wants us to build a meth lab. If that's the case, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to shield your eyes, miss.”

Sasha looked at Adam and helped him with as much as she could before the bell rang.

"Look, if you need help, don't be afraid to call me or come over." She sent him a smile before starting to collect her books. She noticed that Scott wasn't all up on her and hasn't been that way for a while. She looked at Adam and furrowed her brow.

"Hey do you know what's wrong with Scott? I didn't like him being all over me, but this is odd for him." She looked back over at the boy. He simply stood up and walked out of the class without even a glance in her way. She wasn't worried, but she was confused. But she was happy that he was finally off of her back. But something told her that Adam had something to do with it.

Scott was a jock of course. One who absolutely loved to flirt and be all over Sasha. She hated the attention she usually got from boys but she absolutely loathed what Scott did. They weren't even dating and he always had his arm around her, she wanted to tell him no, but she was too nice for that. She let out a sigh. "Well at least I get some freedom now." She smiled and laughed softly. Throwing her bag over her shoulder she moved to the door and into the hallway.

Adam wanted to laugh. She was so innocent. So, so innocent.

“You're so naïve, Tiny,” he shook his head, “I always have gym with that butthole. Not a year has gone by he hasn't tried to hit me in the nuts with something painful.” He cringed inwardly. Something about what she said made him wary, because if Scott was dogging her before, he probably felt like Adam had invaded his territory, as males tend to do. He expected to find out later. He considered wearing a cup today.

It wasn't until half way into Calculus he came to a harrowing realisation.

“She took my notebook,” Adam hissed. Peter turned his head a little, raising a brow at him.

“The one you write all your lyrics in?”

“That one,” he affirmed.

“Relax, it's not like you were doodling melons in there or- wait, you did, didn't you?” Adam could already feel the blood rushing to his face. Peter grinned and plowed on, “You still have that gushy poem written in there? I know you've been mad crushing on her since fourth grade mun--!”

“Ahem,” the teacher cut in. They briefly fell silent, until the lesson continued. Adam leaned forward again.

“Her name isn't part of it.”

“You think she's stupid? Just watch, she'll read it and ask who that girl is, and you can feed her a line of bull and she'll still know. She'll ask just to screw with you, but she'll know. They always do.”

“But she-!”

The two stopped abruptly as they were both drenched in cold water. The teacher stood over them both with his Nerf gun as a few stifled chortles circulated the room.

“Next time I'll use the one with the urinal water,” he threatened.

Lunch bell rang and the two descended the stairs, still soaked and cold. They found a freshman to cut, and collected their lunch as normal. Adam peered around the cafe, curious to see where Sasha might be. He guessed she probably ate lunch with her usual crowd. Instead, he found Scott first. Sasha was right- he appeared to be irritated about something. Peter wanted to go outside again, but Adam became concerned when Scott laid his eyes on Sasha and started walking in her direction. He glanced back at Peter, but he was already long gone. It didn't feel right. Maybe he should hang around… just in case. She made it sound like Scott was harassing her, and he wasn't going to let that happen.

Sasha was innocently reading through the notebook when she was approached by Scott. The notebook fell on the ground as he grabbed her arms tightly. She shook her and started yelling, saying that he knows that she's hanging out with scum and such. He shook her a bit more violently, people saw, but nobody dared get in the way. Scott was a powerhouse when it came to fighting. Quarterback for the football team, and a total dick. Bruises started to form on Sasha's tiny and frail arms. She didn't speak, she couldn't. She was just too afraid, the teachers weren't around as usual, so Scott took it apon himself to seize this opportunity. Nobody would dare speak against him and say that he hurt her, so this was perfect to him.

Scott kept on screaming, he would give Sasha a shake whenever she looked away from him. She struggled a bit when he started to get a bit more violent, she pulled her arm back and punched him in the jaw, for being so scrawny, Sasha knew how to hit. Scott was so in shock that he pushed the girl down to the floor, she landed pretty hard on her hand and a loud snap could be heard.

"****ing!" He screamed before storming out of the lunchroom. Nobody looked at or dared to help her. As she looked helplessly around the lunchroom, she saw Adam and pleaded for his help, she held back a wince and some tears from her now broken wrist.
