He notched an arrow of his own when he saw the shields raised at Jax, ready to fire a countershot, but he already knew there was no stopping them from firing first. Even if he throttled one attempt, there would be another to finish the job, and then the scouts would turn on his position. He pulled the bow at a full draw, at war with himself in the split second it took for an arrow to ignite and connect with its victim. Asher's fingers trembled, now pulling hard enough to draw blood in the backside of his knuckles. He should have fired.

He lowered the weapon, slowly withdrawing the arrow suspended over the trunk. The scene had him transfixed. The scouts pushed forward, and for one soul-shattering moment he knew he could have prevented this from happening. He knew Jax didn't like him and he was certain the big lad would snap his neck if he could. He didn't want Seraphina to see this. The scouts were long gone now. Asher slowly descended to the ground, taking unsure steps until he stood solemnly over what remained of Jax. There was little he could do for him. He had little time.

"I'll come back," he promised the charcoal mess.

The scouts would be closing in soon, and Asher probably wouldn't make it to her settlement in time. He couldn't move quickly. He hoped Seraphina was ready. Maybe there was another of their patrols out there? He started jogging, the most manageable pace he could keep without ruining his step. The farther he went, the more he began to despair it was already over. He hadn't run into another patrol since they killed Jax.

His caution was well-placed. He could already hear the fighting before the village came into sight, and by the way things sounded, the Clan had taken them by surprise, as was likely the plan. Asher kept to the outskirts, drawing his bow and firing at any opportunity. His arrows connected, dropping two, three, and four bodies- but he was outnumbered. He needed to find Seraphina, and get her out.

Seraphina had been relaxing in her home when she heard screams. She got up and ran to her window, when she looked out, her heart dropped. Her people were being killed in a large massacre, by The Clan no doubt. Seraphina cried out as she saw one after the other get turned into ashes. Some vampires tried to retaliate and killed one or two of them, but they were killed in the process. She cried softly, not for herself, but for the innocent children and women and men they were murdering.

"Kill the leader!" Someone yelled.
"Take her down!"
"Revenge for Zaine!"

Seraphina turned and went down the stairs slowly. She needed to turn herself in. Now that her whole family was killed, what was she to do? She thought back to Jax, and realized that if he was in the forest, he would be dead. A tear escaped her eye and fell to the floor. She stood behind the door with her hand on the knob, she took a deep breathe and opened.

The Alpha’s centrehouse was coming into view, and he knew he would need to act quickly to extract Seraphina, but a spanner was thrown into his plan when the door opened on its own. She was already on her way out. Asher turned his head and saw two hunters rounding on her position. He notched two arrows and fired them rapidly into their necks.

“Seraphina!” he shouted from across the square. “Cover up! Don’t get in the way of those mirrors!” Asher shot another arrow furiously as another hunter appeared from behind the house, cutting through the air mere inches from Seraphina. The hunter dropped with a gurgle, the arrow piercing his windpipe before he could even raise his knife at her. With his injuries still weighing him down, he knew better than to join the midst of the fray. He could still drop some bodies from afar, but if anyone came upon him close, his chances seemed low. The best he could do now was cover for some to escape, but soon enough he would run out of ammunition.

He found a vantage point by climbing on top of her house, his back to a chimney for cover. The Clan had archers of their own, and he needed to find them and pick them off. As long as they remained, they wouldn’t let any of the villagers escape. The first was easy enough. The fool still wore a shield on his back, and was easy to spot in his oak tree. He went down with a loud ‘clang’ in the distance. The second noticed his partner drop, and fired back. Asher took cover behind the chimney, then at the first opportunity swiveled and launched it at his target, running it through his stomach. Two down, and he was certain there were more. He only had ten shots left. He would need to make them count.

His Clan blood was rebelling again. It was difficult to focus, and he could sense the overwhelming number of vampires in his vicinity. Asher could feel it boiling just under his skin, an itch which could only be scratched by spilling the blood of others. In truth he didn’t want to kill anyone. The necessity was unfortunate. He peered back down into the village, trying to find Seraphina. She was missing. She was strong, he thought. Still, he worried. If she ran into the Chief, things could go pear-shaped quickly.

A concussive force struck him from behind, shoving him forward and nearly off of the roof. He whirled, the world spinning in his vision, knowing already the attacker was a vampire from the village, probably mistaking him for one of the snipers picking off his people. Asher couldn’t blame him for the mistake.

“Stop.. I’m…” he was cut off when the vampire pounced on top of him and wasted no time in making a go at his neck. He succeeded. His fangs closed over Asher’s windpipe, and in a brief moment, he thought it was over. Suddenly, the vampire lurched and began to convulse, and let go. In moments, Asher was the one on top, pinning him down and slashing open his attacker’s throat. Ruby liquid spilled forth. It was sweet. It filled his body with energy, and the pain in his leg disappeared. The puncture wounds recently opened in his throat sealed quickly. He felt strong. Stronger than he’d ever been. He needed more.

His eye seemed to glow in bright golden fury as he leapt from the rooftop, slamming his boots into a Clansman and crushing his skull with magnitudes of force. He tore off into a frenzy, savagely cutting down anyone in his path, vampires and Clansmen alike. He stopped momentarily, licking the blood away from their wounds. He held a huntress in his arms, drinking from her open throat when none other than the Chief stepped before him.
“I know you can’t be turned, boy,” he grunted, drawing his weapon of choice- a massive warhammer almost as tall as Asher, “I don’t know what manner of monster took hold of you, but it’s clear you must be put down, along with the rest of these beasts.”

The Chief dashed toward him with astounding speed for a man of his stature, but Asher was faster. He jumped aside, dodging the man’s first swing, then leapt in front, gaining purchase on his hammer and launching himself over the Chief. The Chief spun without missing time, bringing down his hammer where Asher landed. He rolled moments before impact, but the swing was sobering. He felt as if the fog was cleared from his mind. The taste of blood in his mouth almost made him hurl.

“Why won’t you move on?!” he demanded. The Chief made no effort to answer, and continued his onslaught. He dodged another of his swings, then rolled under his legs and began to sprint away. Where was Seraphina?!

Seraphina had disappeared. She ran as soon as she could get the chance, she didn't want to cause her family more trouble than she already had. So when Asher appeared, she ran. She usually wasn't a coward but this was a perfect time to not pretend. She wasn't strong hearted or strong willed as her brother and father was. She was just a woman. Just as Asher had said when they had their long talk.

Seraphina stopped in the woods for a second. She closed her eyes, clenched her jaw and fists. She was deciding. To run? Or to turn around and face her problems head on?

As quickly as she had disappeared, Seraphina sprinted back to the village, she saw Asher running from the Chief who was furiously swiping at him. She then got angry, more angry than she had ever been before. She sprinted faster, she jumped up, grabbed Asher's shoulders and flipped over him. She launched herself at the Chief and knocked the shield out of his grip as she landed on him hard. She took his neck in her hand and lifted the man into the air. She was hungry, she was ready to kill.

As quickly as she'd disappeared, Seraphina was back, and bloodthirsty. She was too quick to stop. Asher skidded in the dirt. He wanted to grab her and run, but seeing the way she threw herself at the Chief told him they might have to get creative about this. He'd not seen her ferocity in this intensity yet, and frankly she was terrifying to witness; the Chief was a big man, nearly twice Asher's own size. He was strong as a bull, that man, but Seraphina managed to overpower his onslaught with seemingly little effort. It didn't seem like she would be showing him any mercy.

In his hesitation, he was able to observe the surroundings. Other hunters began to take notice of their Chief's situation, and rushed to his aide. Asher hissed a string of curses as he strung his bow once more. He ham stringed the hunter that attempted to pick up the fallen shield, and the man stumbled in pain with the arrow protruding from his leg. A second shot pierced his skull. Two more Clansmen attempted to flank her, but Asher brought them both down with three shots. The pain was returning, and he fought his chest as he fired off another shot.

Four left.

It almost seemed to be be that he could feel the pain suffered by the Clan, as with every body dropped, the pain intensified. Blood trickled from his nose as he fired one through the stomach of a huntress across the square who was attempting to use her shield. She stumbled, and the sunlight was directed away, but he wasn't quick enough to stop the other one. It contacted with Seraphina, which gave the Chief the opportunity to escape her grasp and shove her away. The big man picked up his hammer again and rushed at her. Asher dropped the hunter with the shield, which ended the beam.

“Sera, move!” he shouted, pulling back his next shot at full draw. A hunter came from behind him and drove a knife into his shoulder. The shock of it released the arrow, which missed its target and sunk into the Chief's hand instead. It resulted in his release of the hammer, which thankfully stopped him from smashing Seraphina into paste, but he was still dangerous, and Asher only had one arrow left.

He swung back and crushed the hunter's nose with his elbow. He stumbled back, but Asher caught him and flipped him over his back, the hunter landing roughly in the dirt before him. A swift kick snapped his neck, but also brought Asher to his knees in a dizzying pulse. He looked down between his laboured breaths, the wheels in his mind turning. Before, he'd lost control and actually drank blood as the vampires did, and remarkably it rejuvenated him. Would it work again?

He took the hunter's knife out of his back and used it to slice open his victim's throat, which, after a moment of hesitation he put his lips to and began drinking. It was disgusting. He spat it out immediately. It didn't help.

Seraphina stumbled backwards when the Chief got loose. Thankfully for Asher, she was good to strike again. Before he could bring his hammer down on her, she moved quicker than usual out if the way, grabbed his wrist as it came past her in her grasp and crushed it with a single squeeze. She heard the satisfying yelp but did not let go and did not hesitate. She wanted revenge for her brother, her father, and what was gone of her family.

Seraphina flipped herself up on the Chief and perched her feet on his shoulders. She placed her hands on his jaw and on the top of his head. While he was stumbling because of the broken wrist, she took the opportunity she had been waiting for.

"For years you've hunted us but now it's your turn." When Seraphina spoke, her voice changed, it was deeper and more violent sounding. With a flick of her wrists in a quick motion, she snapped his neck. When he started to fall forward, Seraphina kicked off and flipped, landing in a crouched position behind him and watched as the mans body fell lifeless to the ground.

Something had changed in her. Her ferocity had surfaced and it didn't intend on leaving. Something had changed on the outside too. Where her hair was black as the night before, it now turned white, and her eyes didn't go back to the golden hue they usually were, they stayed. Red as blood.

Asher looked away. Even with as much turmoil the Chief had put him through in his life, he was still essentially a father figure, and watching him die was not something he ever wanted to witness. The man fell to the ground with a dull thud, kicking up dirt, blood pooling from his open mouth. It was unceremonious, seemingly contrary to the glorious death he always promised to those who looked up to him. The fighting seemed to die down considerably, the sounds of the odd skirmish breaking out across the village scape. Asher finally turned, cracking open an eye at his fallen guardian. He couldn't hold his gaze for long. He turned his eyes on Seraphina, warily.

It was as if the blood lust of the Clan possessed her now. She was glowing with white hot fury, almost in a literal sense. His fingers tightened round his bow, holding his last arrow under his thumb with a nervous grip. Something didn't seem to be in place here, and it wasn't because she had just killed the man who raised him. The young hunter set his brows, lifting the bow into a ready position, arrow notched loosely into the string. Nevermind the vampires closing in around him; if she was seeing blood, he would be the first target, and she wouldn't be easy to stop. He didn't want to kill her- he shouldn't have to, but he wouldn't let her slaughter him mindlessly. Somehow, he doubted she wanted that either. He knew what it was like, what the Clan blood did to someone. It cancelled all restraint.

“Stand down,” he ordered her calmly. “You're seeing blood, lassie.”

Seraphina turned her attention to the first thing that spoke. She growled at it, right then she didn't hear who was speaking, all she could hear was whispers, telling her to kill whoever it was. She growled again and lunged but something happened when she did. Seraphina took over her body once more and yelled in pain. She fell to her knees and held her head in her hands, clenching her teeth so tight that anyone would think that they would break.

Seraphina looked up at Asher, her eyes shifting from gold to red back and forth rapidly. Something odd was going on and Seraphina was having a hard time trying to control the urge to slaughter Asher. She let out another blood curdling scream before getting up and dashing off into the woods. She needed to be away from him before she could sink her nails and fangs into him. She ran blindly through the forest, slamming into trees that went tumbling down and rocks that split in two. She finally made it to the small pond with the waterfall and ran in, she went underwater and stayed that way for a while. Almost a few minutes later she surfaced. Her eyes were now golden, but her hair was still white. She looked about confused, questioning where she was and how she got there. She couldn't remember anything that had happened.
