From the outside, Mori looked like an ordinary city. Fair-sized population, low crime rate, nice looking buildings. At first glance, it looked like a nice town to live in.

But, as soon as one moved in, they would find out the issues with this town. The main problem was the recent incidents that followed with death within the town. The police couldn't find a connection between the victims, and it was put off as freak accidents. Unfortunately, the rest of the town thought differently. They feared a curse that was slowly killing off cityfolk, and this forced more than a few families to leave their homes and move away for their own safety.

Enough about the depressing stuff! Let's get to the 'main attraction' of the neighborhood, a young woman named Kiki. She wasn't what most people called 'normal', given her indifferent attitude towards most things as well as her appearance. Kiki reminded many kids of Wednesday Adams, with her pale skin and dark hair.

At school, she wasn't popular. On the contrary, she was the one who got the short end of the stick. A few minutes before classes started, Kiki was walking over to her locker when one of her classmates stuck out his foot, sending her toppling facefirst into the lockers with a loud clang. She pushed herself off the cold metal, rubbing her face as the nearby kids laughed. "Move it, freak!" The one that tripped her sneered. She didn't seem to react to him or his posse, and she reached down and started picking up her books patiently.

Appearing annoyed that the girl didn't notice his tormenting, he kicked the books out of her hands and scoffed, heading over to his class downstairs.

Kiki let out a sigh, dusting off the shoe prints from her book covers. This happened way too often to her, but she got used to it. The only thing was, the bullies usually didn't keep bullying her after...

As if on cue, a loud yelp echoed though the hallway, followed by multiple loud crackling thuds and one booming thwack. All at once, loud screaming and shouting made Kiki drop her books and run to the stairwell to see the gorey sight. The bully lay at the bottom of the steps, his neck twisted unnaturally and a pool of blood forming under him. All around him were other students, eyes huge and faces pale. One of them was already on the phone with the hospital. Kiki swallowed, backing slowly away from the scene. Why did this always have to happen??

There was something off, Yoeri could tell. It wasn't that she was still trying to recover from the headache she got over the weekend after drunkenly headbutting a jerk that wouldn't stop commenting on her bust size. It wasn't that she was still only half-way moved into her apartment. It wasn't that she was now the new - girl in town after many years of holding a steady home in her college city many miles away from Mori. It wasn't that she wanted to get her hair trimmed. It wasn't that she hadn't eaten a filling breakfast. It wasn't any of that. It was something else.

Adjusting her bag on her shoulder, standing on the sidewalk across from her new workplace, Yoeri stood like a statue. Her professional attire appeared professionally ironed, creases in all the right places--buttons on her fitted black blazer with just the right amount of shine. She reached up and adjusted the collar of her white button-up, wondering if it was actually warm, or if it was just the nerves and panic rioting in her gut that caused her to sweat. She had a feeling that whatever was making her sweat and whatever felt off were connected.

In her bag was her laptop and some folders with lesson plans. In one folder was her schedule. Her first class was supposed to start in 60 minutes. Her meeting with her supervisor was in 10 minutes, but her legs hadn't moved from the spot she was in for the past 5. Her knee-length pleated grey skirt swayed in the commotion around her, but she stayed still. She thought she would arrive early. She thought she would make a good impression. So what if the town was scary? So what if people were dying? She finally got a job. She got away from the city where her boyfriend of five and a half years left her. She was going to make the most of it. The rent was cheap.

But she didn't expect to arrive the first day to an ambulance. She didn't expect to arrive the first day to something out of a horror story. Outside of the school there was a gurney and an ambulance--a siren and flashing lights. There were police cars. There was panicked shouting. Something about a kid. Something about a fall.

And that was what felt off.

Yoeri told herself she had dealt with worse than that. That was probably a lie, but she chose not to think about it. She pushed her teal hair behind her ear. She breathed in deeply. The air tasted of anxiety and adrenaline. With one foot in front of the other, she crossed the street and approached the school. She rushed past the ambulance, remaining composed. The cops didn't notice her. She was always good at slipping by. She walked through the front doors of the school, and then she was stopped in her tracks all over again. She moved out of the way as a group of students rushed by, and she tried to regain composure. Despite the struggle, she ignored her strife and started walking down the hallway in hopes of finding someone who could tell her what was happening--or at least if her first class was now cancelled. It was a bit of a struggle to breathe.

Because if it felt off outside, it felt downright
cursed within the walls.

Kiki kept her head down, sneaking past the other people and heading for another stairwell. She would call in sick, make the excuse that she threw up, something! She had no desire to stay here any longer after that.

Suddenly, she rounded a corner and ran smack into someone. Her feeble frame was sent toppling backwards, her books spilling everywhere. "Not again!" she muttered in frustration, starting to pick up the books. She didn't even notice who it was.

Something the new teacher might notice was the eerie cold aura that surrounded the girl. It was like a winter's day around her, though it didn't seem to be coming FROM her, oddly enough.

Yoeri didn't like the atmosphere of the school. She didn't like it one bit. It reminded her of sadness, but a foreign sadness that she had never felt before. A dark sadness. Not blue, just dark. She had a class to teach today, though, and she had a crisis before her that she had to get through, and she needed to find a supervisor that wasn't preoccupied with cops, so she tried to think of warmth. The warmth of alcohol. The warmth of her comforter. The warmth she felt when she was in college--when things were better.

The warmth of nostalgia had started to seep past her black blazer when she was bulldozed with a chill that she wanted to wash off of her body immediately. She didn't know which threw her backwards more--the impact with the petite girl before her or the instinct to flee from the cold. She held on tightly to the bag on her shoulder and flipped her hair out of her face with her other hand, ignoring the way she felt about the coldness when she saw the situation the student was in--on the floor with her books, trying to get everything back together. None of the passing students tried to help.

She was hit with a sense of guilt. Maybe she should have been watching where she was going. She was kneeling down immediately, grabbing some of the books, getting closer to the girl--further immersed in the chill.
"I'm so sorry," Yoeri said politely, glancing at the small, pale girl with genuine concern. She wondered if the child had ever seen the sun before. "I was rushing and didn't see--are you okay?" With a small stack of books in her hands, she extended the pile to the girl, gazing at her with intent. "Do you need help?" The girl looked like she had to be twelve. What was she doing in this school during a crisis? Why was she in a place so cold?

It took her a moment to realize this woman was helping her out. She paused, blinking with surprise. This woman clearly didn't understand who she was. She was a freak. A monster. A demon. It was obvious she was new in town; most people avoided her.

After a moment of surprise, she took the books from the teacher's hands. "Uh... Yeah, thanks." she muttered softly, keeping her eyes hidden. "No...I'm good. I just.... I'm not feeling well. I'm going home." She pressed the pile of books to her undeveloped chest and brushed past the woman. No need for anyone else to get into trouble with her.

Going home?

Yoeri blinked in surprised at the way the young child tried to rush off. The more she looked at her, the more convinced she was that she had to be twelve. That didn’t explain why she had so many books—but maybe she was visiting a sibling. Either way, if she was going back home she better be living in a classroom here at the school, or she would have to walk through the war outside.

“Wait,” Yoeri called, walking after the girl. She caught up quickly with her long legs. She was a teacher here. She wasn’t going to let this girl wander off during a crisis. Her heels clicked against the floor and she stood slightly blocking the child’s way. “Are you lost? It’s pretty crazy outside. Why don’t you go to the nurse?” She assumed they had to have a nurse at the school. “Or let me help you through the crowd?” She was the Health teacher, after all, new or not. It would feel kind of wrong to ignore a possible student (though she had no idea why a twelve year old would be a student) with a health problem.

Kiki wanted so badly to just get out of school, but the teacher seemed deadset on keeping her. Her mood seemed to darken, her tiny shoulders tightening with annoyance. "I don't need the nurse..." she said softly, not fully voicing her frustration with the teacher. After all, that wouldn't end well if she did.

After a moment, though, Kiki let out a sigh, and her shoulders slumped. "Besides, the nurse is helping with my classmate's... incident... But Ok, you can escort me." With a small nod, she headed back around where she had been going in the first place.

As they headed outside, the group gathered near the entrance where the ambulance had been all seemed to stare at Kiki. SHe kept her head down, making sure not to make eye contact. So many of the students stared her down, as if it was her that caused the severe injury of their friend and classmate. Kiki just tried to ignore it. Once they got past the crowd, Kiki gave the teacher a little bow. "Well, thanks for walking with me. Goodbye" And with that, she turned and headed off in the direction of her mom's apartment.
