Odd House

OOC Here

Season 1
Episode 1

David

David felt like he was being watched. It was a very odd sensation. It wasn’t the normal staring he got when he would be allowed to skip a line or when he would get the best treatment of anyone in the room. Those were stares of envy or anger. This sensation, it was more calculating. Of course, all of this was superstition. He had no real way to know if someone was watching him short of asking John to scope out the place. But John, despite being the same age as him, should know if they were being followed or tracked. That should have reassured David that he was just being paranoid, but nevertheless the feeling would persist as he walked the halls of the museum.

The museum itself was actually quite small. Maison de Notre Dame, the House of Our Lady. This museum was very out of the way and very underwhelming in its architecture and staff. Someone of David’s name and stature would never lower themselves to come to such a place, except for the fact that David didn’t care where this was concerned; he loved museums. Maison de Notre Dame had a very specific taste and interest. It housed paintings and sketches that seemed to come from every significant era in art history, and some styles that he couldn’t place. What’s more, every single piece was of a cathedral. Many of them he knew; Nidaros Cathedral in Norway, Notre Dame de Paris in - well, Paris, Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, in Barcelona, Spain. But many of them, he did not know. This of course was strange since he should know most of these cathedrals as any cathedral that would warrant creating a piece in the first place would have already garnered his attention. But there it was, these paintings were mostly alien to him and that was fascinating.

To make things stranger, the cathedrals were becoming increasingly otherworldly. Odd color choices were made by the artist, and in some there were missing walls or towers floating in the air. One painting seemed to be distorted, as if the cathedral was bloated.

“Weird,” John said.

They were staring at another bloated cathedral.

“It’s like it just ate some people,” David said, pensively. His eyes flicked to John, who let a small smile slip. David felt himself give a small smile. They stood there for a moment, until a loud pop jolted them and John moved to block David from any incoming threat.

A girl started crying and she held a limp string with a red exploded ballon dangling from her hand.

There it was again, that feeling that he was being watched.

David moved on, with John following behind. He entered a stairwell and headed down. The outside of the building was pretty small, but apparently it went a ways underground. He made his way down to the third floor underground. A couple whispering to each other passed them. The man’s eyes shifted to David for a second as he whispered into the girl’s ear. For a second, David thought he saw sharp teeth and the flick of a snakelike tongue. But it was gone and the man wasn’t looking at him at all - the couple was simply kissing and making their way up.

David stopped at the landing and watched the couple disappear through the door of the floor he had just been in.

“Matthieu? ça va bien Matthieu?” John’s voice was soft.

“What?” David glanced at John.

“I was just saying how this place reminds me of that Resident Evil movie, the first one, where they have this place called The Hive and wouldn’t it be funny if we found zombies.”

“Non,” the no came out in French, nasalized. He would always revert to French when he was thinking.

John looked concerned. He touched David’s cheek and gently guided his face back so they could see eye to eye, “A quoi penses-tu?”

David gently, but firmly, removed John’s hand, “Nothing, not thinking about anything.” He looked away, “let’s go.”

This floor was mostly empty. The walls were lined with more cathedral paintings with various colors and styles. Each painting seem to be trying to outdo the previous one. One of the painting felt odd. It felt like it was looking at him. It was a painting of a cathedral, but it was very far off in the distance and it looked small. All round there was greenery and trees. In the sky, he could see strange creatures that looked like snakes with moth-like wings. He couldn’t really make out their detail as they were surrounding the cathedral and seemed small on the painting to give the illusion that they too were far away. The phrase, It’s looking at me, floated into his head again. It felt like one of those paintings where the eyes followed you no matter where you stood. But this was a cathedral, not a person. And yet, it felt like the painting was looking at him no matter where he stood. Somewhere inside the painting, halfway to the cathedral, he noticed a man in a bowler hat standing near a tree. Only half of him was visible. David couldn’t remember if he’d seen it before. Maybe he missed it.

Not for the first time, he shook off the strange feeling and moved on to the painting across from it. This painting was of a door and only part of the cathedral was visible. He realized then that all of the paintings were actually different versions of the exact same cathedral.

“Why is there a random guy in a hat standing in the middle of the road?” John asked, chuckling. “Gotta tell you man, this place is weird.”

David felt chills run up and down his spine. He didn’t want to turn. It was stupid, why was he forcing himself to stare at the door? He steeled himself and turned. The man in the bowler hat was no longer half behind the tree. In fact, he was in the middle of the paved road. He seemed bigger and closer and he obscured part of the cathedral. It watched him.

Tessa had her guitar case pulled tightly against her body as she pushed her way into the subway car. She glanced at her watch, not even processing what time it was, and slid into an open spot with her back against a wall. She got some funny stares because of the oversized case in her arms taking up too much room, but she didn't care. Tessa was used to getting funny looks. Either because she didn't look like she belonged, which most of the time she didn't, or because she was new.

The new thing was about to become something of the past. Even though she would be eighteen in only a couple of months her foster parents were talking about adopting her. Giving her a real family. The had already promised her that she could stay living with them while she went to college, of course that had been with a stern reminder she had to be going to college. The idea she'd get to go to college at all was impressively new. Her grades weren't exactly stellar so she had to start off at the local JC before she had any hope of getting into a four year, but she had admission paperwork in her backpack.

The excitement in her chest diminished slightly as she realized someone was looking at her still. She glanced around, trying not to be obvious, but it was hard to tell who was looking at her in the car full of people. The subway stopped and some people left and some people got on, but that feeling didn't leave her. Someone was staring. Tessa shifted slightly and looked out the window. Not that there was a lot to see since it was underground, but lights would pass, or a tunnel would open up and sometimes you could see something cool.

As the subway started moving again Tessa saw flashes of exactly what she suspected out the window. She was used to looking out at the underground of New York. They passed one tunnel and the flash of what Tessa saw was wrong. It was hard to explain, but Tessa knew what she had seen hadn't been New York. The light had been wrong. It wasn't a big difference, but it was big enough that Tessa felt the hair on her neck start to stand up. The feeling of wrongness was not helped by the fact that whoever had been staring at her was still staring at her.

The subway pulled to another station and Tessa felt her ears pop from the pressure difference. She had to get out of the subway. Tessa tried to make her way to the door, three stops before her own actual stop, but the doors were closed before she could get out. A small sense of panic started to set in. She felt trapped. Tessa pushed herself to right next to the door, it'd be the next one to open, and she'd be out of the train as fast as she could.

A few deep breaths later and Tessa felt better, even though the sensation of wrongness, and the feeling of being watched was still there. Tessa could feel the slight air puffs of the outside world as the train passed pillar or emptiness, and for a moment the air smelled foul. Then it was gone. The person next to Tessa didn't seem to notice. She felt like she was going crazy. Thankfully the train pulled into the station and the doors opened, but the doors on the other side of the train were opening. It was two stops before her usual stop, the doors were opening on the wrong side. Tessa was too stunned by that to even bother trying to make her way out of the car.

No one else seemed disturbed by the change in doors. No one else seemed to be bothered at all by anything that was happening. Tessa's eyes darted over the people in the car and it was almost painful to look at them. Like when you take your 3d glasses of during a movie. It was a more apt description than Tessa realized at first. Until she finally looked at the woman next to her. The woman was looking at her phone, but she had nose, and her eyelids were non-existent. The woman blinked and Tessa saw a thin membrane of flesh flicker over the eye and then it was gone. Tessa shivered and pressed herself next to the door that would open on her exit. Should open on her exit.

David

David could feel the blanket of strangeness beginning to cover the hallway he was in. Suddenly, the emptiness felt very acute. Minutes ago, he was in a room with tons of people, and now there was no one. There should be people filing in and out as they made their way through the museum.

“You’re making my job so much easier.”

The voice came from the painting. The man in the bowler hat had no eyes. Only lips peeled back to reveal white sharp teeth.

David didn’t know how to react. Was he going crazy?

“The last batch of kids had more spunk. You’re generation is the worst I’ve seen.”

John wasn’t reacting. He just stood there, not moving. Not even when the thing in the painting started to climb out.

“I guess they don’t make them like they used to,” he started climbing over John, who remained motionless, “two generations ago there was this redhead. She could spit fire. A little obvious, but she had spunk. Never got to eat her. She died in that wretched rain-world.” The thing was shaking its leg, which, like the rest of it, went from being inky to looking very solid and real. “Why am I telling you this? Bored, I guess. I just killed three of you in the past hour, no fun. My colleague is going after one of you right now, a girl, 17, pretty. There’s another in Canada, he’s being chased by The Tractor. Don’t know why they call him that, looks nothing like one.”

The entire time the thing was talking, David could feel himself go cold. The hall seemed to bend and grow longer then get shorter again. The thing moved closer and David kept screaming at himself in his head - RUN RUN RUN.

It reached out a hand that slowly turned into a large triangular sword, inky black.

“John,” the word came out of David as barely a whisper.

“Oh he can’t hear you,” the thing said lazily, looking over at John. “It’s not even really him. We’re not really here.”

He looked at David than said, “Oh, let me explain - this,” he made a motion to encompass the hallway, the point of the sword nearly reaching him, “is an After Image. This John here was your John, but now he’s a statue, a left over from the moment in time that was captured.”

“What are you,” David breathed.

The thing smiled and blood seemed to pour out of its mouth a little. “We’re locked in battle you and I. Our destiny is happening now. This After Image is here so you can choose if you want to be... oh why should I explain anything to you. It’s an old fashioned decree no one really follows anymore. Now we just get to the killing. More fun.”

David started to feel himself get his strength back again.

The thing lunged forward, the point of the sword headed straight for his head. Everything seemed to slow and David ducked out of the way, his muscles feeling like they were burning with the effort. He fell onto the floor and the the painting and wall exploded as the thing rammed the sword into it. The smile wavered and the thing looked at him, puzzled.

David crawled backward as the thing worked to get the sword out of the wall. It snarled as it yanked the sword out and started coming for David. He stood and dodged the sword, landing a punch on the things face. It felt strange, like touching inky leather. It jumped back and snarled.

“I’m going to take this slow, boy!” It jumped at him, things seemed to slow down again, but it was hard to move. It was like he could see in slow motion, but his muscles had to struggle to listen to his brain. Like when, in a dream, movement feels like going through molasses. The sward moved passed him, but nicked his neck slightly.

The small cut stung, but David ignored it.

“What are you!” David screamed it this time.

The thing just smiled and it’s other arm turned into a sword to mirror it’s right arm. It went to John and sliced through him. John melted into an ink puddle on the floor.

The thing said that it wasn’t really John, but David didn’t know what to believe. He screamed and suddenly the hallway seemed to flicker and for a second, the hallway was full of people before being empty and gray again. The thing looked puzzled again, almost fearful.

“What did you just do?” It snarled, “The After Image is supposed to stay until-“

David didn’t bother to listen any more, instead, he rushed the thing and kicked it straight in the chest. It fell back against the wall with a loud thwack! It became inky again for a moment and stumbled.

“How dare you!”

David was running now, straight for the door at the end of the hall, away from the stairs.

“I’m going to kill you!”

David reached the door and looked back as he went through it. The thing was coming after him, half flying, half running down the hall.

“No!” It screamed as David slammed the door shut.

Silence. Nothing but silence. The creature never slammed into the door. He waited for it to burst down, but nothing happened. He tentatively opened the door. There was only darkness beyond. He could feel a cool breeze coming in and he could make out shapes, like shrubbery, but it was too dark to see more.

There were a few stars in the sky. David wondered how the heck this was happening since he should be underground and he never went back up the stairs. When he looked back, he realized he was no longer in the museum. He was in a house, a mansion.

His eyes roamed around the room, which was enormous. It looked like a giant entry way, with two spiraling staircases at either end of the room leading up to the next floor. There was an archway in the middle, between the staircases leading to more rooms.

David was about to say something when a voice, coming from everywhere and nowhere, said, “You should close the front door. We have another coming.”

David, because he had no idea what was happening and because he had nothing else to do, closed the door and stepped away.

Everything seemed to be moving at painfully slow speeds. Or maybe it was just because she was scared. Tessa didn't want to admit she was scared, but she was. A part of her wished her sister was there so she could comfort her sister, if she could comfort Mandy then the rest of this wouldn't be as scary. Tessa remembered carrying the small child through a walk through scare maze, and how un-scary it had been just because she had been holding her sister.

Finally the train slowed to a stop at her station. She bolted out of the train door and was heading up the stairs when she realized what was easily the most horrifying thing that could happen in New York during rush hour.

No one was there, half way up the stairs she paused and looked around. The entire station was deserted. That never happened. Tessa had always seen at least one or two people at this station, it was a popular one. Even at the late hours of the night when she would get in trouble for being home late, there was always one or two people.

Tessa looked up the stairs listening, straining her ears to hear a car, or someone yelling, a horn honking in the distance even. There was nothing. Then the light coming from outside was blocked, as if someone was standing at the top of the stairs. It was such a relief that Tessa started up the stairs. The creature came into sight. She had to call it a creature because it was no human being. It was a humanoid, but that was were any similarity ended, very quickly.

A scream died in Tessa's throat as the creature lunged at her. She took a step back forgetting she was on stairs and tumbled down the length of them. Pain was spiking through her leg and head, but she pulled herself up in a mad scramble and was running away from the stairs. The only way out of the station now would be to cross the tracks and climb on the other platform and exit from there. She had been told a million times, and there were signs everywhere. Never cross the tracks. She did anyway.

After she had dropped down to the track she looked over and saw the creature. It grinned at her and for a second blurred and now there was a second creature next to it. Tessa turned to run again and half tripped over the rail, thankfully catching herself and avoiding the third rail. She started to pull herself up on the opposite platform, cursing her guitar case, which seemed to have one of the latches permanently broken now.

A snarl drew her attention and the creature was standing over her. She dropped away from the platform and almost fell again. Tessa didn't pay attention to which direction she turned, she just started running. The labyrinth of train tracks were all she saw.

“You will be mine.” A voice from behind her seemed to wrap around her and slow her down. It was toying with her, had been from the first moment she noticed there were no other people. Now it felt like she was trying to run through mud that was up to her waist. It was like those nightmares that you never seem to get anywhere. Maybe this was a nightmare. “That's my skill, well other than the cloning of myself.”

“What do you mean?” Tessa asked.

“People believe I'm just a dream. Once they do they stop trying, and try to wake up instead.” A mad cackle came from the creature. Tessa realized she had stopped trying to run, not far ahead of her though was a door, if she could just get through the door. The creature was close now. She could see it again. His arms were too long, and his legs seemed to have two sets of knees, one going the wrong way, like a wolf. Everything about him seemed elongated. “You're in the After Image now, there is no where safe.” The creature grinned, but it looked more like a snarl from a bear. “Your destiny is right now in this moment.” The creature continued. “Your whole life has been for this moment. Waiting for my claws to dig into your soft flesh.” Tessa felt her hands grip tight around the guitar case that was slung around her shoulder. The creature lunged, faster than Tessa could possibly get away from. On pure instinct she swung the case and felt it shake and the other latch popped open. Barely able to hold the case closed she ran for the door, the door that was only a few feet away but felt like it miles away.

The creature was snarling again. “My toy.” But Tessa was at the door somehow and it was opening and then she was through it. She slammed it behind her and started to keep running knowing the door would never hold under the creature trying to get past it. She stopped though because there was a boy standing in front of her, okay maybe boy wasn't the right term he had to be about her age though. Beyond him was what Tessa could only describe as some old fashioned foyer. There was a thick carpet and a hat stand and a stair case, and dark hallways leading off in all directions. This definitely didn't belong in the New York subway.

Still clutching the broken guitar case Tessa asked in a voice that sounded distant but much more brave than she felt. “Who are you? Where am I?”

David

“Who am I? Who are you?” David asked, stepping away from the girl. He was in shock.

“Where did you come from?” He asked, “did you see that thing with the bowler hat out there? How did you get past it?”

The questions just spilled out of David like a stream of consciousness. He went to the door, past the girl, and opened it. He didn’t know what he expected to see, the hallway, where the girl had come from, or - there was only the outside again. It was dark with a nice breeze and those shapes of shrubbery.

He closed the door and stepped back. He looked around again. The foyer looked nice. Whoever owned this house was seriously rich. The craftsmanship was clearly top-tier. Everything seemed to be a blend of different styles throughout time, but blended in a way as to not look mismatched or gaudy.

He sighed and looked at the girl. She looked slightly disheveled, not that he looked any better.

“I don’t know where we are. I don’t even know what’s happening.” He walked over to the staircase and sat down. He didn’t know if he could trust her. “My name’s David Léo Noé Matthieu de Clermont.” It was probably weird saying his full name, but it came out so automatically, he had been having to do that his whole life. According to his parents, ones name is power, and you always had to make sure people knew who you were. He wasn’t doing that here, it was just that it now happened without thinking.

“Who are you? Do you know what’s going on?”

He took out his iPhone and looked at the screen. He had a couple of messages and emails from thirty minutes ago. But now there was no signal. He had a message from his mom and one from an unknown number. The emails were from his school and from a roleplaying site about an RP he was in.

“Damn,” he said, putting his phone away, “no signal.”

Tessa

“I asked first.” Tessa snapped in the childish way. “Bowler hat?” She was confused as to what the boy was talking about, and then he stepped past her and was opening the door she had just come through. When he did though it wasn't the subway, it was some garden looking yard. An actual yard. She was stunned. Completely stunned. Where the heck was she?

Tessa reached out and placed her hand on the wall. It had been papered, and the paper was slightly textured, just enough that she could feel the bumps and crevices as she ran her fingers over it. The physical reality of it felt weird because of how much it all felt like a dream.

“I don’t know where we are. I don’t even know what’s happening.” The boy walked over to the staircase and sat down. “My name’s David Léo Noé Matthieu de Clermont.” Sounded foreign. Who was he? The name was non-sense to her.

“Uh, Tessa Green. I don't have a middle name. I guess nice to meet you David.” That was the only thing she could think to say, she supposed it was nice to meet the boy, well David she supposed she should start calling him. “I haven't the faintest idea what is going on.” She shook her head, and pulled her guitar case off of her shoulder.

Tessa was just about to ask a question when a voice came from a hallway. “Ah, hello Monsieur de Clermont, Miss Green,” The man paused glancing between them, Tessa also fully realized that David was foreign, French specifically. “Welcome to the House. I am pleased you made it. I am afraid it will just be the three of us then.” He was an elder looking man, probably in his 60's, or late 50's. The man was well dressed, and held himself in a fashion that Tessa thought highly proper, something only seen in Television.

“I am the caretaker of the House. If you have any questions or needs let me know and I will try to accommodate. Monsieur de Clermont, you'll be happy to know we have a room for Savate, as well as some other such rooms you'll appreciate.” The Caretaker waved them to follow after him. Tessa's mind was reeling. “Miss Green, we have an extensive library, and some lovely trails around the House if you so desire. I must warn you both though that until you get your bearings it is best to stay in the main hall, this hall to be specific, and not to venture upstairs. Hopefully I will have time to get both of you fully acquainted with the House before anything happens. Until then I have dinner prepared for us in the dinning hall.”

Tessa had followed after the Caretaker holding her guitar case close like it was her only connection to the real world left. A million questions were brimming in her mind, and half a dozen of them fell out of her mouth all at once in a jumble of words and confusion sounding something like “How are we? Where is Savate? Who dinner?”

“I assure you that no one is dinner, well except the cow. Neither of you are vegetarians right?” Tessa only shook her head, and wondered briefly how long the hall was. “The rest of the questions I'll explain as best as I can over dinner. As for what savate is, Monsieur de Clarmont, would you do the honors?” The old man almost seemed to bounce as he led them the rest of the way to the dinning hall letting David explain to Tessa.

Then with a deep bow, that seemed unreasonable from someone of his age, the Caretaker opened the dinning room door. The room was beautiful. The table and chairs were all made of solid wood, a dark one Tessa couldn't identify, probably oak. A giant chandelier hung over the dinning table, the lights flickered as if they were real candles, but it was obvious they were leds. Something that set Tessa on edge slightly. For as ancient looking as the home was, there was little things like that that reminded her she was not in some untouched home.

“Go on, eat. I promise it is not poisoned and I know you'll find something you like.” Tessa took a tentative step into the room, and the aromas of the spread hit her. She saw a dish that looked exactly like one her mother used to make, not her foster mother, but the beautiful woman who had adopted her when she was just an infant. “I know I probably went a little overboard, but it has been a long time since we have had guests.” Tessa frowned and looked at the Caretaker. What did he mean 'we'? As if he sensed her unasked question he grinned at her. “All in good time.”

David

David smiled when Tessa told him her name. He reddened a little at saying his full name. He probably sounded like a weirdo. ‘I mean who does that,’ he thought.

“It’s nice to meet you too,” David said. She didn’t know what was going on either. He watched her pull a guitar case, from the looks of it, off her shoulder as he thought about more questions to ask. The silence felt a little awkward to David. Though he usually liked silence, he knew that it was a social faux pas to let the silence hang. He smiled, thinking it was interesting how many French words had made their way into the English language. When he noticed that one of the latches on the guitar seemed to be busted, he was going to let Tessa know that he could point her to a craftsman who could fix it for her, but the respite was over.

David’s head whipped around when the voice came from the middle hallway that went deeper into the house, “Ah, hello Monsieur de Clermont, Miss Green.” David stood up but stayed on the top stair of the staircase, not trusting the man. “Welcome to the House. I am pleased you made it. I am afraid it will just be the three of us then.” David had a strange sensation that he couldn’t really pinpoint and didn’t recognize. The man felt, old. He could obviously see that the man was older, on the other side of 50 years, but that wasn’t causing the feeling. Because David felt that the man was older. Time seemed to stretch far behind him, like a trail through the ages. It was mesmerizing, like gold and silver strands extending from the man. David felt dizzy.

“I am the caretaker of the House. If you have any questions or needs let me know and I will try to accommodate. Monsieur de Clermont, you'll be happy to know we have a room for Savate, as well as some other such rooms you'll appreciate.” David wobbly followed after Tessa and the Caretaker as he led them down a dark hall. “Miss Green, we have an extensive library, and some lovely trails around the House if you so desire.” The hall was lined with dim sconces that looked to be from the gothic era, but from what he could tell, the flame wasn’t real. Every now and then they would pass a door, each with its own unique style. One of the strange things was that some of them had different kinds of modern touchscreens where the doorknob would be. One door didn’t even seem to have a knob at all. David’s consciousness wandered back to the Caretaker’s voice. “I must warn you both though that until you get your bearings it is best to stay in the main hall, this hall to be specific, and not to venture upstairs. Hopefully I will have time to get both of you fully acquainted with the House before anything happens. Until then I have dinner prepared for us in the dining hall.”

David perked up at the mention of Savate – how did this person know that he practiced Savate? How did he know he was French? For that matter, how in the heck were they here in the first place? David couldn’t get the questions to stop flooding his mind.

“Um,” David said, fighting through the confusion, “Savate is a French martial arts style, kind of like kickboxing, Le Boxe Française. David wondered how Tessa was coping with all of this.

The smell in the opulent dining room was overwhelmingly amazing. David was used to elaborate dinners that were actually quite good, if you could get over the horrific boredom that settled in for a kid who’d prefer to be anywhere else. There were dishes of all kinds, but what caught his eye was the Bacheofe. The smell of it brought back memories. He could almost feel tears building up as memories of his mother making it for him as a child surfaced. Back when his mother seemed like the kindest most wonderful person he knew. During the time when she had been injured and had to stay home. During that small period, she had made him Bacheofe every day after his tutoring was done. They would sit and talk about what he had learned and about the silly things his older siblings had gotten into. She was a different person during that time. Before, she hadn’t payed much attention to him, and she certainly never cooked. Their chef would always do all the cooking. But that year was the greatest year of his life. And then it was gone and his mother never made Bacheofe again. David always thought that perhaps his mother was afraid of feeling. Afraid of being vulnerable.

He snapped himself out of it and noticed that there were other dishes as well from various places. He saw Coq au vin, chocolate mousse, cheese cake, pizza, and so much more. The caretaker led them each to their seat. The table was so long that they the Caretaker had to lead David all the way around the table so that he and Tessa could sit across from each other at the middle of the table.

David too wondered what the Caretaker meant by, “we.” Then he remembered what the creature had said about others being attacked.

David stood suddenly, “Wait, we have to help them! There’s a girl, she’s 17 and the thing in the bowler hat said his colleague was going to kill her.”

That’s when the voice, which David had somehow forgotten about, spoke again. It was like soft silk, which a touch of gravel that made her voice sound endearing.

“I can assure you,” she said in an English accent, “there are strategies being implemented at this very moment.” David sat down, looking around to see where the voice was coming from or to see if he could find any loudspeakers, but he couldn’t find anything. It seemed that the voice was coming from everywhere. “There are many things to explain, but as always there is never enough time. Even you, David, will soon realize that no one can ever truly master time.” David had no idea what she meant by that. “And these days, time is the shortest it’s ever been. It is unfair to you, young Cosmonauts, that you should be received under such dire circumstances. The laws used to function properly, before they had ben bent so far beyond recognition. The Laws have not been functioning less and less. Hence you entered the After Image before you were ready. Oh, where are my manners. Please, eat. Relax. Even though it is hard to believe, here – for the time being – you are safe from those creatures you encountered in the Outer Realm.”

David merely looked at Tessa, his gaze going from shock to fear to a questioning look that seemed to say, “what do we do now?”

Tessa

She was thankful for the explanation about Savate. She thought it sounded interesting, and wanted to ask more about it, but then they were being bowed into the dinning room. Tessa placed her backpack and guitar case down next to a chair that she claimed.

The panic that had been welling up inside of Tessa since the first odd thing happened on the subway, started to subside. The smell of food had been calming. Something about the house was bugging her, she felt like she was being watched.

“Wait, we have to help them!” David said suddenly. “There’s a girl, she’s 17 and the thing in the bowler hat said his colleague was going to kill her.”

“Help who?” Tessa asked, she was 17 was he talking about her? If so, who was the guy in the bowler hat, David had mentioned him earlier. That creature had attacked her, was it a 'colleague' of the bowler hat guy? Then someone else was talking. Tessa's eyes darted around the room trying to figure out where the voice was coming from, somehow she knew it was the eyes that she had felt on her. As she thought about it the sensation had been there from when she had first arrived in the house.

“I can assure you, there are strategies being implemented at this very moment. There are many things to explain, but as always there is never enough time. Even you, David, will soon realize that no one can ever truly master time. And these days, time is the shortest it’s ever been. It is unfair to you, young Cosmonauts, that you should be received under such dire circumstances. The laws used to function properly, before they had been bent so far beyond recognition. The Laws have been functioning less and less. Hence you entered the After Image before you were ready.” What was the After Image? “Oh, where are my manners. Please, eat. Relax. Even though it is hard to believe, here – for the time being – you are safe from those creatures you encountered in the Outer Realm.”

Tessa sank into the chair, she felt eyes on her again. She looked up and saw that David was looking at her. It seemed like he was trying to ask her something. She gave a shrug, and pulled a dish close to her that looked tasty, and piled some of the food into her plate. “What's the After Image?” She asked as she poured herself a drink, of what looked like apple juice, her favorite. “Why us? What are Casmanouts?” She was certain that isn't what the voice had said, but it sounded close enough. She really hopped that one of them would answer.

The Caretaker smiled at her. “We'll start with the Cosmonauts.” He gestured at the pair of them. “You are Cosmonauts.” He seemed to think that explained everything.

“Uh? Okay, but what are they?” The Caretaker took a huge heavy sigh.

“Comfortable?” Tessa nodded. “All right then. Cosmonauts have been around since before humans even figured out fire, since written words were first figured out in farthest galaxy.” The Caretaker shifted and leaned forward a little. “Cosmonauts are protectors of the innocent. Keepers of reality and law.” Tessa felt like she was out of her element. She wasn't stupid, but this was ridiculous. The Caretaker sounded like he was making stuff up.

Tessa looked over at David to see if he understood anything that the Caretaker was saying. “Wait, so we are Cosmonauts, and what were the creatures? The guy in the bowler hat and ...that monster.” She felt a shiver go down her spine thinking about the monster.

David

“Magnifique,” David said, huffing as he followed Tessa’s lead and pulled his childhood dish closer to him. He let Tessa handle the questions as he stared into his food, spoon in hand. He hadn’t realized how hungry he actually was. He and John had only had a small lunch and... John. Where was he? David took a bite and the Bacheofe was delicious. It was almost as if his mom had made it herself.

David nodded absently when the Caretaker asked if they were comfortable. The word, “Cosmonauts,” made him think about space and the cosmos. He took a few more bites, his mind wandering from his own thoughts to the conversation the Caretaker and Tessa were having. A thought struck him when Tessa looked at him, ‘is she the girl the guy in the bowler hat was talking about?’

The concern and questioning look on Tessa’s face drew him out of his reclusive thoughts.

David shifted his gaze to the old man, trying to remember what had been said during his meditation, “Cosmonauts - so - space? Are we traveling into space?” Just talking about this seemed absurd. Of course they weren’t going into space. What kind of ridiculous idea was that? “I mean - I sort of forgot my space uniform back at the museum, dude.” David was getting snarky, he knew, but this was all too much. This game needed to end. Every now and then, his French accent would come out when he was nervous or annoyed or angry, even though his english accent was flawless

David set his spoon down and wiped his mouth. Then he stood and said, “Ok, Je m'en vais.”

“Let’s speak English, Noé.” The voice caught David off guard when it used his middle name. Only his grandmother ever called him that, because it was his grandfather’s name and she had missed him so much ever since he had died. It caught him so off guard that he sat back down. “For Tessa’s benefit,” the voice continued. “Communication will be key if the two of you are to be successful in your ventures.”

The voice pivoted, “Please forgive me for not properly introducing myself until now, my name is Echo. It is nice to meet you, Tessa, David.” She was back to calling him David again. He wondered if he had imagined her calling him by another name. “To answer your question Tessa, the After Image, which is a translation from,” Echo made an odd sound that hurt David’s ears. It sounded like a high pitched whistle. The Caretaker didn’t seem to react it to it at all. “Of course, humans are incapable of speaking or understanding,” David quickly covered his ears again as she spoke the language before uncovering them again, he gave Tessa a grimacing look, “so it has been translated into the dominant language of the current time. The After Image is a metaphysical plane, beyond existence itself. No one really knows exactly what it is, not even me. However, what we do know is that it is a crucial turning point in the activation of Cosmonauts. It sets your destinies in motion. The creatures you both saw are Óvinurinn. But we don’t have time to get into it now.”

Tessa

Tessa wondered what David had said in French to cause Echo, that was the voice's name, to chastise him. She couldn't blame him though for sounding as incredulous as he did. She felt that way too, but wasn't certain how to express it.

“Uh, hello Echo.” Then the voice, Echo, said something in an incomprehensible language. Tessa went to plug her ears, but she was done speaking the word, and just when Tessa thought Echo was done she spoke another word in that language. “Ow” She mouthed at David, who looked as uncomfortable as she felt.

“So it has been translated into the dominant language of the current time.

“Isn't Chinese the dominant language? Or are you suggesting that other planets speak English as well? Actually not important, Óvinurinn, let's focus on those things for a moment. They tried to kill David and me, trapped us in the After Image, which has something to do with activating us as Cosmonauts. If we weren't Cosmonauts before the After Image how do you know so much about us? Like our favorite dishes?” She pointed to the dish next to her, “Or that David does Savalt, or whatever it was called.”

“We knew that you could be Cosmonauts.” The caretaker spoke now. “There are few that are born to your world that can be, and you all feel... out of place. Like you don't belong, because your true home is among the stars, saving them.” The caretaker seemed to fill up with pride as he looked at the two of them. “Together you two could save all that it means to be a Cosmonauts, you could bring the ancient laws back, and save the whole of reality.”

It was true that Tessa had never felt like she really fit in anywhere, but she had a perfectly good reason for that. Did David feel that way too? He didn't look like he did. "I'm no hero." She mumbled.

David

“Chinese is widely spoken,” Echo said, “but English is the dominant language in much of pop culture and international relations. The Eras of the Cosmonauts move with the times and place. Two thousand years ago, the Cosmonauts were not even chosen from this universe, much less humans.”

David noticed that the voice did not address Tessa's question about how she knew things about them. When he looked at Tessa he could see that she was struggling with everything. He felt a bit selfish for thinking of his own feelings. Of course, she was struggling too, he wasn’t the only one. He had to realize that he wasn’t in this alone, she was in this with him. He didn’t know how to feel about being told he needed to save existence. It was true, however, that he had always felt out of step with the rest of the people in his life.

“We can be Not-Heroes together,” he said, smiling at Tessa, shyly. “It’s funny how she told us to rest and then throws a whole ‘your destiny is to save the universe’ at us,” David joked, chuckling. “All of this might be kind of fun if it weren’t for the fact that I have no idea what happened to John,” David’s smile faltered. He sighed and lowered his spoon thinking about how he couldn’t even connect to John.

“Wait, what do you mean ‘this universe?’” David asked, in the middle of lifting his spoon to take another bite.

The voice ignored him and continued on, “In regards to other planets, Tessa, do not mistake the existence of the Cosmonauts for an indication of an ever-present galactic society. It is true that there are many spacefaring species, a few of them in this universe, but reaching a level of true Galactic dominance is next to impossible. There are many extinction level events that a species must overcome to enter each level of civilization. For example, here in Midgard, there is only one Type 2 Civilization at the other end of the universe in a galaxy called, Farside, by a very creative astrophysicist named Julia Heart – who was part of the group that updated many of the names we used for the planets and galaxies here in Midgard. They might have changed Midgard to Universe Prime, but many of the other Cosmonauts felt that it placed an importance on this universe over others. Throughout the rest of the universe, including a galaxy relatively close to the Milky Way, there are four Type 1 civilizations. Your own planet, Earth, is currently predicted to become a Type 1 civilization in the next 100 years. Type 3 civilizations are extremely rare and most of them fall before too long. Star Wars actually does a good job of showing how a Type 3 civilization might meet its end.”

David thought it was interesting how Echo seemed to be very knowledgeable about pop culture.

“Wait, are you saying we’re in Asgard?” David asked, putting down his wine glass. Absently, he realized he was saying ‘wait’ a lot, it was kind of a quirk of his.

“I feel that the house is more akin to the giant tree Yggdrasil, which connects all the worlds, but the Vikings felt that this was Asgard. In fact, during the generation dominated by Vikings, the house looked quite different. We’ve kept some of the Norse names, but other Earth civilizations have made their mark as well. To the Greeks, we were Mount Olympus, and to an old civilization your historians haven’t discovered yet, the house was The Great Seed. However, we have taken great pains to stay completely hidden from humans and all forms of life. These cultural stories were created independently from us and the house. We have never had a hand in steering the ideas that humans have about god and the creation of the world. Such things would be against our laws.”

There was a pause. David thought he could detect sadness in the last sentence Echo had spoken.

“That leads us to our current dilemma,” the voice finally continued. “The Laws are under siege. Many have been broken and taken prisoner, bound within a powerful artifact and hidden across the Allworlds. We would protect them, except that we do not know their location, as per the Law of Equal Truths, which prohibited either side from knowing the location of the Laws. In order to maintain the balance, we could not know the location of the Laws without the other side knowing it as well. The Law of Equal Truths was the first to be broken and bound. We have ways of knowing when they go after a Law, but it is usually quite last minute and we must move quickly to protect the law. Sometimes it is something else we must protect, such as a person or a civilization.”

David wondered what Echo meant by Type 1 and Type 2 civilizations. He had so many questions, especially about the laws.

David chuckled and smiled at Tessa, “I have too many questions. I’m kind of afraid to ask because I don’t know if I can handle more exposition in my brain.” He was trying to remain calm and joking helped, but he didn’t know if his fear and nervousness was visible to Tessa.

Tessa

“We can be Not-Heroes together,” David said, smiling at Tessa. Tessa smiled back with a hint of her defiant attitude in the smile. “It’s funny how she told us to rest and then throws a whole ‘your destiny is to save the universe’ at us. All of this might be kind of fun if it weren’t for the fact that I have no idea what happened to John.” Tessa had no idea who John was. She bit her lip and looked down at her plate of food, she had eaten most of what she had put on there without even realizing it. If she was honest she hadn't even been hungry, but she was tired. It felt like it had been days since she had rested.

“Well we did ask questions.” Tessa said mostly to her food.

David suddenly asked, “Wait, what do you mean ‘this universe?’” She hadn't even caught that, but he made a good point. What did Echo mean by 'this universe'.

“In regards to other planets, Tessa, do not mistake the existence of the Cosmonauts for an indication of an ever-present galactic society. It is true that there are many spacefaring species, a few of them in this universe, but reaching a level of true Galactic dominance is next to impossible. There are many extinction level events that a species must overcome to enter each level of civilization. For example, here in Midgard,” Tessa had heard that term plenty of times, it was the Norse name for the universe that humans lived in, why was Echo using it? “There is only one Type 2 Civilization at the other end of the universe in a galaxy called, Farside, by a very creative astrophysicist named Julia Heart – who was part of the group that updated many of the names we used for the planets and galaxies here in Midgard. Star Wars actually does a good job of showing how a Type 3 civilization might meet its end.” Tessa's head was spinning, she had no idea what Echo meant by type 1 or 2 or 3 civilizations. Then again Tessa hadn't particular paid much attention in school, which she was suddenly regretting.

“Wait, are you saying we’re in Asgard?” David asked, Asgard the Norse heaven, more or less. It was wear the gods lived anyway.

Such things would be against our laws.” Now Tessa's head really was spinning, the science talk had been hard enough to grasp, but add some heavy mythology on top of that, most of the mythology Tessa knew was from books, not true study of the history. The books Tessa enjoyed were fantasy.

“That leads us to our current dilemma,” Echo said after a long pause.“The Laws are under siege. Sometimes it is something else we must protect, such as a person or a civilization.” The laws were people? Or at least something that could be stolen? Moved.... weren't laws concepts. What laws could Echo be talking about? Who was stealing them? Why were they stealing them? What would happen if Tessa and David failed at protecting the Laws? Why them? What was the Allworlds? Hundreds other questions filled Tessa's mind, but not one of them seemed as important as: when can I go home?

Then David said exactly what Tessa was thinking, “I have too many questions. I’m kind of afraid to ask because I don’t know if I can handle more exposition in my brain.”

“I feel full, of words and food and...” Tessa trailed off, she couldn't bring herself to say fear, not in front of David who she knew so little about. The Caretaker seemed to awaken, as if he had for just a moment been a statue or maybe somewhere else.

“I believe, Echo, that that is enough for both of them tonight. There will be more time to speak with them in the morning. They have had a long dangerous day, and have a lot to digest now, both food and thought.” The Caretaker smiled at them both.

“Then I leave them in your capable hands.” Echo said, and Tessa could have sworn if Echo had a body she was bowing. A sensation that Tessa had felt at the back of her head since she had first stepped into the House diminished, like a headache settling back and starting to lessen. Though the sensation was not truly gone.

“All right, are you both satisfied, for now?” The Caretaker asked, a twinkle in his eye. Tessa nodded and pushed away from the table. She picked up her things, the light backpack that had some school work and other sundry items in it, and her guitar case. The lock still wouldn't set right, she gave up and followed the Caretaker and David out of the dinning area and into the hall they had first came through. “As I mentioned earlier, for now I recommend you do not leave the main hall. There are many doors in the House, and many are not safe. This hall however has always been the residence hall so there shouldn't be anything too dangerous.” He seemed to emphasis too a little too much for Tessa's likeing. Then he started murmuring something under his breath and digging into his pockets, as he stopped in front of a door.

The door was fairly ornately carved, and looked like it may have been from the Victorian era, it had a style that reminded Tessa of art nouveau. Tessa was reaching out to touch the delicate carvings when the Caretaker cleared his throat. “Found your key Miss Green.” He held out a key that fit the era of art Nouveau, with delicate swirls and what looked like a flower set in the handle. “Before you turn the key for a moment think of what you want to be behind that door.”

“Home.” Tessa said firmly. The Caretaker gave her a sad smile.

“It can recreate your bedroom, but this door cannot take you home.” Tessa opened her mouth to ask what he meant by 'this' door, but decided it was a conversation for a different night, she was too tired to fight the man about returning home. A part of her thought 'and you already ate the food you're stuck in the fey lands forever now'. She clamped that thought down and turned to the door, she set the guitar case down, placed her now freed hand on the door, and slid the key into the keyhole.

It took her a full minute to get past the fear that had been ever present since the subway, and then probably two more minutes to have a firm grasp on what she wanted to appear behind the door. When she finally felt satisfied she turned the key and stepped into the room, bringing her guitar case with her.

Tessa had never before been able to say that what she saw was exactly what she expected. Well if she was honest the room was a bit darker than she anticipated, but that was the only thing she could say she hadn't visualized before stepping through the door. That was to say there was a queen sized bed with thick blankets and plenty of pillows, as well as a desk, and several bookshelves full of books. There was a large window with a comfortable looking sitting area in front of it. The window looked out onto the grounds, but it was too dark for Tessa to tell what she would be able to see. There was a fireplace, which seemed mostly to have come to mind because the building seemed like it should have one in the bedroom, and two doors. She knew that one would be a bathroom, with the largest bathtub she had ever seen, and the other door would be a closet. Tessa set her guitar case down on the stand she had imagined for it, and for a moment laughed.

Seventeen years she had dreamed of comfort, but never allowed herself to believe she'd have it. Yes she had been happy in her foster parent's house, but she had shared her room with her foster sister. Tessa couldn't remember a time since she had been five where she had had her own room, let alone have whatever she wanted in said room. It hurt though, sadness sprang through her chest and her laugh turned into a sob. She was thankful she had shut the door, because now she sat on the bed and cried. This place was more than she could have wanted, but it lacked the one thing she had ever really wanted and that was family. David was some stranger, the caretaker was an old man, and Echo was just a voice. One that thankfully seemed to not be watching for the first time since they had entered the House.

David

They stood there for a moment, David and The Caretaker, watching Tessa disappear behind a very intricately crafted door. When it closed, there was an odd sound, like what an airlock mind sound like, only very soft and subtle – barely perceptible. He kept looking at the door, fearful to look anywhere else. It felt strange to be alone. The silence seemed to come in waves, deepening and relaxing in regular intervals. Like feeling your heart pump blood through your brain.

Would he ever see Tessa again? Were they now being separated and beguiled into believing they were safe only to be pounced on by scientists or aliens – alien scientists. David didn’t even have the energy to pursue his fears any farther, his imagination was riding on thin ice. Time felt so odd here. It was like he could feel it passing, like the tic of a clock, only the clock seemed to be somewhere inside him, somewhere he couldn’t pinpoint. Maybe, if he was being dramatic, he’d describe the sensation as residing in his soul.

When he turned to look at The Caretaker, he briefly wondered if he would see those thing silver and gold threads he had seen when they had first met him. But there was nothing. Only the old man, watching him.

“Monsieur de Clermont,” The Caretaker smiled and gestured for them to continue down the hall. “I assure you that Miss Green will be fine.” David resisted a look back at the door they had just left. “The doors you see here before you are quite special,” he almost sounded wistful, “there is a great story, or two,” he chuckled, “behind each door. But, of course, we will discuss more of this when you are both well rested and have had time to process the events of this evening.” They seemed to walk for quite a while and David wondered how on earth a hallway could be so long. “Here we are,” The Caretaker finally stopped and David was so out of it that he nearly kept going.

The Caretaker again took some time to rummage through his things to find the right key, though David had no idea how he could fit what had to be millions of keys on his person. In fact, he was sure it was quite impossible. As the man looked for the key, David studied the door. It was odd, similar to one of the doors he had seen in the earlier hall they had passed – a solid block of silver with no handle. Except this door seemed to be made of nothing he would imagine doors to be made of. Instead of wood or metal, the door seemed to be made of ice.

“Um,” David said, with a skeptical tone, “how exactly am I supposed to get in? There’s no key lock.”

“Here we are,” The caretaker produced a tiny silver whistle and handed it to David, who just held it in front of him. “Ah,” The Caretaker said, realizing that David was stuck, “I believe the objective is to whistle into the key to activate the process. It is, of course, only linked to you so be assured no one else can whistle their way in,” The Caretaker smiled as if he had just made a joke.

The silver whistle was the size of his finger, but thin. It had a small hole near the top and two holes at either end. David wasn’t sure what whistling would do but he gave it a shot.

“Before you do, simply think of what combination of sounds you might want to use. The sounds should come to you,” The Caretaker said.

David put the tip of the whistle into his mouth and breathed air into it. The sound that came out was beautiful. It was the most beautiful music he had ever heard. The notes when from high to low, to high, to higher, to high, to low, to high – when he noticed movement he stopped. The ice was turning into vapor. Then, all that was left of the door was a soft mist.

“I’ll come for you in the morning,” The Caretaker looked back towards Tessa’s door a long way away, “I’ll see about enticing the house to make your room a bit closer, hopefully it’ll be amenable to that suggestion. Otherwise you’ll both just have to get really good exercise.” He smiled and gestured for David to walk through.

David felt the cool mist on his face as he passed. It was calming and comforting. When he was completely past it, he saw that the mist began to solidify. The he could feel the coolness of the ice, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable cold. When he looked at his room, it was exactly like his room in Montchouette, his family home in the mountains where there is always snow – and where he spent the year with his mom. He felt a little sad remembering that time, but also happy to have that memory. He would enjoy the sound of the fireplace crackling and looking at the mountains. The entrance to the lavish bathroom was to his left, and the closet was positioned in the hallway leading to the bathroom. The fireplace, which wasn’t in the original room, was crackling across from his bed. Beyond at the opposite end of the room, he could see an enormous window that stood in place of a wall and he could see mountains with snow tops in the distance, though it was too dark to see much. He looked down at the key, wondering where to put it. He suddenly noticed a silver chain inlaid with tiny diamonds that sparked in the firelight. He wasn’t sure if it had been there before, maybe he hadn’t noticed it. He hung the key/whistle around his neck. In this room, he finally seemed to relax his shoulders. They were tense from the events of the evening and he suddenly felt more tired than he’d ever felt in his life. He decided he would explore more in the morning. He took off his shirt and pants, opting to sleep in his underwear – which some might consider an odd choice considering the big block of ice he had for a door. The bed was so comfortable, that after he snuggled under the blankets, giving one last sad thought to where John might be, he fell asleep.

Tessa

Tessa looked at her phone as she lay on the bed, part of her hoped David was wrong and she had signal, she didn't. Tessa turned the phone off and put it back into her bag. She need to shower, there was a layer of grime on her from running in the subway. It took a while to get it off.

Once she was clean and ready for bed she took out her guitar and played a few cords, practicing the homework she had been giving by her music teacher. She ignored the rest of the homework, figuring at this point what did it matter, at least the guitar was something she still had.

Finally though the exhaustion that had been settling into Tessa took over and she fell asleep on top of the blankets with the guitar next to her.

Only to be rudely woken just before dawn by a sound that made Tessa think of the old bomb drill videos she had seen in History.

Mandy Redding

It was past Mandy's bedtime, but she was refusing to go to sleep. She stood on her bed and looked at the empty bed on the other side of the room. Technically the two girls who lived in the Redding home could have had their own rooms, but after the first couple of weeks it had been decided to move Tessa into Mandy's room since they got along so well.

Mandy was angry because Tessa should have been home by now. Tessa had promised to read to her, and yet here she wasn't. In the other room Mandy's parents were on the phone, Mandy didn't know who they were calling, but she hoped it was Tessa to tell her to get home right this moment so they could continue the adventures of Wilbur the pig and the other animals of the Zuckerman farm.

Mandy joined her parents in the living room and over heard them on the phone. "Please just look for her. We know she's got a history, but we really think she wouldn't run away from here. Yes I know it hasn't been twenty four hours, but she was seen getting on the subway heading home." They were talking about Tessa. "I'll bring in a picture tomorrow." Her father sighed and hung up the phone. He was frowning. Mandy remembered he had worn that face once with a different foster kid they had taken care of, the boy had gotten into a fight at school. Was Tessa in trouble too?

John Henrick

John felt like he was falling through endless empty space. Then he hit the ground hard with a loud thwack. Slowly, he tried to get up, but his limbs wouldn't listen to him. His thoughts were muddles and he was trying to make himself think through the strange fog that had settled in his mind. He could taste his own fear in his mouth and the taste of metal. He couldn't even form words in his head to ask himself what had happened. What had he just seen?

Moments later, or maybe hours later, a woman screamed. The sound pierced through him and he would have cringed away if he could move. She was speaking in French, but it sounded accented, foreign.

"I'm sorry, I don't know...I can't speak....Oh my gosh, who did this...Someone please help! It's okay sweetie the man's just resting."

John thought it odd how her voice managed to change pitch so effortlessly. And sure, he was just taking a nice nap on the floor in...the thought couldn't come to him. He couldn't remember where he was or why he was there.

"I already called, they're on their way," Another woman's voice said.

"What do you think happened?" A man's voice. Apparently more people had joined the party since he was last able to pay attention.

He could hear French being thrown around, people wondering what had happened to him, if he was probably a drunk or, "maybe he was trying to steal the paintings."

Paintings. The word seemed to snap something inside him back into place and he screamed. The entire crowed screamed too and fell back, some tripping over the one behind them.

John looked around, faces were staring at him in shock.

"Trust me," John said, "your day is going much better than mine."

He saw blood on the floor and realized he had blood in his mouth, that explained the metal taste. A museum worker helped him up, speaking in French and suggesting that he wait for an ambulance. John wanted to refuse, but when the light headed feeling hit him, he decided he should probably listen.

As they waited, he looked over at the thing that had caused all this. John had to fight down anger and panic. David was gone. He failed. The man with the bowler hat wasn't in the painting anymore.

David

He woke up in the midst of a soft red light blinking and the sounds of sirens going off. He rubbed his eyes and stood up. Everything still felt like a dream. The siren kept sounding off. It wasn't a completely irritating sound oddly enough, but it was a bit loud. He walked over to the door and the cold briefly shocked him before he remembered that the door was made of ice. He grabbed the key from around his neck and blew into it. The ice turned to vapor and he walked through. It solidified behind him.

He looked up and own the hall. Red siren lights were flashing up and down the hall, evenly spaced out some distance apart. He looked at the door in front of him. The door belonged to Tessa's room.

What in the world? David clearly remembered that her room was really far away from his. It could just be another copy of the door, but with the weirdness of this place, he doubted that was the case. To the left, in the distance, he could see the lights of the dining room they had been in the night before. To the right, he could see the entry way. He made his way to the dining room but no one was there. He wondered what Tessa thought about the sirens.

"Door two million seven thousand, six hundred and seven." A voice, female, but different from Echo, sounded out of what were probably hidden speakers. "Please make your way to the Heart." There was a pause and David wondered what she meant by, The Heart.

There were a few breakfast items on the dining table. He grabbed a slice of buttered toast and took a bite. He should probably try to find this Heart place, but where was he supposed to start looking?

"Found him," Echo's voice came out fierce and determined. "Recalculating door exit parameters." She sounded urgent. "David, Tessa, please meet in the dining hall as quickly as possible."

A few moments later, Tessa walked into the dining room. He smiled, "There's breakfast if you want something."

Someone cleared his throat behind him and David turned to see the caretaker holding some fresh clothes.

"Monsieur," he said calmly, "you might need better attire if you're going to travel across space-time to save the universe."

"What?" David asked, then looked down to realize that he was in his boxers. His eyes widened and he finished the rest of the toast, grabbed the clothes and quickly put them on. He blushed at Tessa and then changed the subject.

"What's going on?"

Echo's voice chimed in, "I have detected the location of a demon who is about to acquire the Law of Enlockment. Up until now, he has had free reign to capture the Laws. It stops now! David, Tessa, your task is to prevent him from stealing the Law from his safe place in Krackmora Castle. He is safely placed as one of the King's servants."

"Hold on, this is moving kind of fast," David said, "what is the Law of Enlockment?"

"The Law of Enlockment is one of the Eight Laws of the Lesser Seal. The Lesser Seal holds some very dangerous demons. In addition, the Law prohibits entry into the Hollow World, which holds the cage housing the Lesser Demons."

"Wait what are..."

"I'm sorry David, but I don't have time to explain everything to you," Echo said, the urgency in her voice was starting to worry David.

"What are we supposed to do?" David asked, in a very serious tone. Up to now, it had all just been weird talk, but they were talking about action now.

"I'll explain on the way," The Caretaker said.

"On our way to where?" David asked - when the entire room suddenly starting moving up. "Holy crap!" David almost fell al over if not for the chair he used to steady him. Suddenly, the table itself was retracting down into the floor. In it's place, a large globe of soft glowing light rose. It was large, like something you might see at a museum. It was taller than they were. The entire room seemed to shift into what looked to David to resemble an observatory. The walls seemed to melt away and the cosmos replaced them. It was strange, feeling like they were traveling through space. David felt like he might throw up when the room suddenly stopped.

"Floor Two Million." The other voice said. She must be the Switchboard, David decided.

A door opened up onto a hallway and David could feel heat emanating from it. He could see doors lining either side of the hall. Each looked like they had a different combination of fire and other theme.

"Notes, there will be lava. Good luck." The Switchboard announced.

"You've got to be kidding." David said.

The Caretaker stood before them with a grim determination. "This will be your first mission. It will be dangerous, but you must always remember that you have a destiny unlike any other. You have a strength within you that we have not seen in thousands of years. Beyond these doors, is the door to the world you must go into. I will hand you a book with the most important information you require." He gave the book to Tessa. "Your weapons will appear beside you. They are not ordinary items, they will have special properties of their own, which the book will explain. Here is a sack with food and other essentials." This, he gave to David. The sack, was actually a tiny cloth bag that could fit in his pocket. David shrugged and put it away in his jeans.

David looked at Tessa, "I don't know if I can handle this," he said.

The moment was frozen for a short time, before the Caretaker finally said, "Time to go."

Tessa

Season One. Episode Two

"Door two million seven thousand, six hundred and seven. Please make your way to the Heart." That wasn't Echo speaking, where there more disembodied people in this house? Tessa shivered at the thought. She got dressed quickly. There clearly was an emergency, but at least it wasn't a fire or something.

"Found him," This time it was Echo, and who was she talking about? "Recalculating door exit parameters." What did that mean? "David, Tessa, please meet in the dining hall as quickly as possible." Tessa nodded, and finished getting dressed. She had no idea what she was going into so it was a pair of skinny jeans, and a black t-shirt. Tessa was braiding her hair as she stepped into the dining hall.

David was already there, in just his boxers, he greeted her with a smile and said, "There's breakfast if you want something." Tessa resisted laughing, and was able to control her face into something resembling a smile.

“Thanks.” Tessa said and grabbed a bagel. It was still warm, as if it had just got toasted. She slathered some spread on it and looked away as David pulled on the clothes the Caretaker handed him.

"What's going on?" David asked as he finished getting dressed.

"I have detected the location of a demon who is about to acquire the Law of Enlockment. Up until now, he has had free reign to capture the Laws. It stops now! David, Tessa, your task is to prevent him from stealing the Law from his safe place in Krackmora Castle. He is safely placed as one of the King's servants." Tessa nodded, despite her confusion.

“I'll pretend that made sense.” She mumbled around her food.

"Hold on, this is moving kind of fast. What is the Law of Enlockment?" David asked.

"The Law of Enlockment is one of the Eight Laws of the Lesser Seal. The Lesser Seal holds some very dangerous demons. In addition, the Law prohibits entry into the Hollow World, which holds the cage housing the Lesser Demons." Echo explained.

"Wait what are-" David started to ask, but Echo cut him off

"I'm sorry David, but I don't have time to explain everything to you," Echo said. Tessa could tell Echo was worried. If she was an AI she was a highly advanced one. Something humans wouldn't have made, how old was she? Why was she here? Tessa shook her head, they had more urgent things to worry about than that.

"What are we supposed to do?" David asked, in a very serious tone. He seemed to pick up the same thing Tessa had. Something was very wrong.

"I'll explain on the way," The Caretaker said.

"On our way to where?" David asked - when the entire room suddenly starting moving up. "Holy crap!" David stumbled, catching himself on a chair. Tessa sat down on another chair surprised. Then the table itself was retracting down into the floor, Tessa grabbed a banana off of it before it was gone. In it's place, a large globe of soft glowing light rose. It was large, like something you might see at a museum. It was taller than they were. The entire room seemed to shifted and Tessa felt like she was in space. Stars spread out in every direction filling the room and beyond it. She let out a soft breath of air.

"Floor Two Million." The alarm voice said.

A door opened up onto a hallway. Tessa could feel heat blazing in the rooms. Each and David could feel heat emanating from it. He could see doors lining either side of the hall. Each looked like they had a different combination of fire and other theme.

"Note, there will be lava.

Tessa wanted to add her own fear of the future to his comment. Her heart was racing and everything before them was terrifying.

"Time to go." The Caretaker said. He placed his hand gently on Tessa's shoulder and then gave her a slight push. She stepped into the hallway, her mouth drying up instantly. She hoped there was some water in that sack the Caretaker had given them.

“Two million seven thousand, six hundred and seven,” Tessa mumbled looking at the doors, some had plaques on them, others looked like they may have at some point or another. Each door was unique though. Finally she saw the door labeled two million seven thousand, six hundred and seven. The plaque looked like someone had scratched at it trying to get rid of the numbers, but the numbers had melted back. Tessa had the image of the crate at the end of the Indian Jones movie burning the information off of itself pop into her mind. She shook her head and started to reach for the handle.

Just as she was about to touch it she thought better of it, and gathered up some of her shirt in her hand and used that to protect her hand as she turned the handle. Tessa was thankful for that because through the shirt she could feel the heat trying to burn her skin. She hadn't even finished turning the handle and the door blasted open, Tessa screamed and ducked. When nothing happened she smiled and David and chuckled.

“Might be a little jumpy.” Her heart was pounding still. “I'll be honest,” She said still looking at David. “I'm actually completely terrified. We have no idea what is waiting for us, we don't even understand what we are, and yet here we are.” She waved her hand and gestured out beyond the door. They couldn't see far as there was thick fog, or smoke just beyond the door. What they could see though was rough and unforgiving looking terrain. “If you want, I'm all for just finding a way out of this house and forgetting this ever happened, but if you want to do this. I'll be there beside you okay.” She looked back to David from the place-beyond-the-door.

David

David was tempted to take Tessa’s offer. Though at this point he felt they were too deep in it to just run away. The heat from the place beyond the door was great, however, and he wasn’t looking forward to going through it.

“We don’t have time to explain everything,” Echo said, “and my ability to speak to you will be limited across the Divide. But we have placed as much information as possible in the book we gave you.”

David started to calm his breathing and he started mustering up some courage from deep within him.

“Remember that the laws of physics and biology are different across the Divide, sometimes the difference is very slight and sometimes great.”

Finally, David felt strong enough to step through. He grabbed Tessa’s hand.

“Ok,” When Echo spoke, David took it as a sign to go through and he and Tessa jumped through the doorway. “Wait! Step through slow....” The rest was drowned out as David and Tessa plummeted through the door and out into air. Suddenly they dropped and started rolling down a large hill.

He couldn’t hold on to Tessa as he rolled down so fast he couldn’t stop to get his bearings. The world was spinning around him. Luckily there weren’t any trees to knock into and he finally stopped spinning when they reached flat ground. He felt an intense heat near his face and when he opened his eyes, he saw a river of lava flowing right in front of him, inches from where he landed. He yelped and scrambled back away from it. He looked up and down the river. It was like a river, snaking through the clearing and emptying out into a small lake farther down, but instead of water it was all lava. The odd thing was that the green grass was quite lush around it. He could see figures swimming in the lava, dark shadows in the deep river.

He panicked when he realized Tessa might have fallen in, but luckily she hadn’t. He looked back up the hill. They had exited the front door of what seemed to be a small cottage built on a very tiny patch of flat area on top of the hill.

Tessa

Tessa stepped through the door into a different world. It was different knowing she was going somewhere different then the last time. As she crossed the threshold her body tingled, and then she was falling. Like some sort of kid's cartoon character, she hit the ground hard. It was shale and loose rock so she slid and tumbled and could feel the rock cutting exposed skin. When she finally stopped moving she was surprised she hadn't killed herself.

It was suffocatingly hot. Her mouth dried out instantly, though the taste of rocks didn't help. For a moment she lay on the ground considering her life choices. This could not have been the best of them, though she thought for a second, it hasn't been the worst so far. She took a deep breath, through her nose and shakily stood up. A river of lava was about two feet to her left, she moved farther right away from it. Yep, an actual river of lava. What kind of place had those? Usually once the lava was exposed to air it would cool and harden, but not here. She shivered, and not because it was cold. Then looked around and spotted David.

"Think they gave us water?" She asked around some grit in her mouth. "And a first aid kid." She added as she started walking toward David. She could feel rocks in her shoes and blood on her knee. David was looking up the hill from where they had come. Tessa had expected nothing, maybe a door but no apparent building attached to it. At the top of the hill though was a little cottage. "Oh, better remember this place and how to get back here." She said, now next to David. There was a weight on her shoulders that was not there before, she glanced and saw the hilt of a sword just over her right shoulder.

Tessa reached back and drew the sword, it came out in a smooth motion. She knew she couldn't hold it with one arm though so she found herself holding the long hilt with both hands. "A bastard sword." She said, not entirely certain how she knew. "A hand a half." Tessa added. "I don't know how to use this." She furrowed her brows. Most of her fighting had been scrappy school yard fighting, and no foster parent in their right mind would let her take actual fighting or martial arts classes. For a second she could smell ozone and then it was gone. She re-sheathed the sword in what may have looked like a practiced movement to someone who didn't know her.

David

“I hope so,” David said, referring to Tessa’s comment about water. It drew his attention to the dryness of his throat and he could taste dirt and grass. He wiped his face at watched Tessa handle the sword.

“Where did you,” he was asking her where she had suddenly gotten a sword from when he suddenly felt something in his pocket. He brought out what looked like a small dark solid stick. It was as long as a pencil, but thicker and had no pointy ends. It looked like black marble with subtle and strange iridescent lights swirling around within the smooth object. He watch the lights fade and reappear and fade again.

Then, with a slight motion of his hand the object started to expand, growing longer at both ends. In an odd fashion, it seemed to David that the object seem to be melting into existence. No, that wasn't the right description, it was like the material was building upon itself as a good longer; as if it was alive.

"What the heck!" David dropped than our fully lengthened bow staff onto the grass. It seemed to crackle with energy as he rolled down the rest of the hill and into the lava. David cursed and thought to late about catching the bo staff before it was swallowed up by the river of lava. But he was too late and the lava unceremoniously ate the bow stuff. David's momentum to come up to the edge of the river and he would have fallen in were it not for Tessa’s grip on his arm. She pulled him back to safety, both of them panting. They're adventure was almost over before it had even begun. "well, looks like I'm knocking to get an a on my report card. Sorry about being such a klutz," David said, sounding defeated. David took one last look at the river. "dammit," he said as he looked back up the hill at the cottage. The door was now closed and its place was a very unassuming little cottage.

“Do you think we should go take a look inside," David asked her. He thought he could see shadows moving behind the windows of the cottage, behind dark curtains. He looked around, at the river again and beyond it. Across the river, in the far distance, he could see what looked like a town. David pointed it out to Tessa. “I wonder how we’re supposed to cross this though.” Looking up and down the river’s length, he couldn’t see a bridge anywhere. He could see the faint outlines of a path curling around the cottage hill and stopping at the edge of the river to the right of where the two intrepid travelers. “Looks like there’s a path - or there’s supposed to be a path or something.” David got closer to the lava to see if he could find a lever of some sort, but there was nothing but bubbling flowing lava. The heat was so great that his face started to feel tender and he had to step back again.

He was about to ask Tessa what she thought they should do next when a gruff voice came from behind them.

“If y’all gonna jump in I’d appreciate it kindly if you left your supplies by the wayside ‘fore taking a dip.” David turned to see a man in what looked like a blue wetsuit. He was lighting a cigar and leaning against the doorway into the cottage. “Redwater ‘aint no way to go out, I’ll tell ya that,” he said, blowing smoke out. The smoke danced away, forming shapes that resembled animals.

David didn’t know what to say. This was the first alien he’d ever encountered in his entire life. Actually, until a few hours ago, he didn’t even know aliens or other worlds were real. Yet here he was, face to face with something that looked an awful lot like a human. The man had dark skin, and his neck seem to droop down a little, like an old man, but this person looked like he could be in his late thirties.

The man watched them from atop the hill in his cottage doorway. His eyes moved from David to Tessa and back again. “Seem to be having some sort of communicationing failure here,” the man said, smiling. His teeth were very very sharp.

“So,” he motioned at Tessa with his cigar, “you wear the pants for you boyfriend?”

David blushed, “No I’m not...”

“Listen son, you may not think my time is valuable, but I have two Goosknuckles bakin’ and I ‘aint got time to be standin’ here waitin’ for you to grow some,” a voice spoke softly in their heads [unable to translate into your target language], “and speak.”

“What was that?” David asked Tessa.

“What was what?” The man asked, looking around nervously.

David knew this wasn’t going very well. He didn’t know who this person was, but he couldn’t let the man think they were suspicious or something and report them to the local authorities - whatever those might be like on this world.

“Sir,” David began-

“Sir, why’d you have to go and call me Sir?”

“-we’re trying to get to that city over there.” He pointed to the city far off in the distance, “do you know how we could get there?”

“The man’s eyes narrowed and he took one quick glance at the city.

“Are you from the government?” The man spat out, taking a few steps down the hill and closer to the pair, “cause I ‘aint received no notice about an audit takin’ place. I pay my taxes dammit, I deserve to be treated with respect.”

‘The government?” David looked at Tessa, confused. “Sir-“

“Quit it with the Sir!”

“-we’re just trying to cross the river.”

“Of course you are,” the man said.

“Yes,” David responded automatically and then trailed off, unsure of where this conversation was going.

They all stood there for a moment in awkward silence.

“I’m not sure,” David began-

“You two ‘aint on the schedule.”

“Excuse me,”

“For what? I didn’t hear you sneeze.”

“No, I mean, I’m sorry-“

“Why, who’d ya kill?”

From the man’s gaze, David did not consider it out of the question that this man was actually asking him quite seriously.

“We just want to cross,” David finally said.

“Yes, of course you do.”

There was another moment before, “Oh alright, but only because I ‘aint got no idea how you managed to sneak up on my here cottage.”

David gave Tessa a worried look.

The man walked down the hill, past them, to the end of the path that ended at the river’s edge.

He placed a hand down on the ground next to the lava river. Nothing happened for a moment, but then the ground started to shake. Suddenly, the grass began to rise and arch towards the other side, forming a makeshift bridge. The ground shook again once it reached the other side and buried itself into the ground.

The man stood and dusted his hands off.

“Now, let’s discuss payment. I’ll be needed a lock of hair from each of ya.”

Tessa

Tessa had been looking down the river of lava trying to see if it eventually cooled the farther away from the source it got if so they'd be able to cross farther downstream. It seemed like a reasonable idea. She was about to suggest it to David when a voice behind them startled her. The man who had spoken was odd; Tessa couldn't quite place her finger on what was strange about him, but she definitely sensed he wasn't normal there was an energy about him she didn't understand.

“You wear the pants for you boyfriend?” The man asked.

"I don't have a boyfriend." Tessa was saying at the same time David spoke.

“Listen, son, you may not think my time is valuable, but I have two Goosknuckles bakin’ and I ‘aint got time to be standin’ here waitin’ for you to grow some,” a voice spoke softly in their heads [unable to translate into your target language], “and speak.”

“What was that?” David asked Tessa shrugged. The man looked about nervously as if he expected someone to jump out from a bush that didn't exist. David and the man had a few minutes of exchange, an exchange that made Tessa decide the man was a threat. She did not trust him.

“Now, let’s discuss payment. I’ll be needed a lock of hair from each of ya.” Tessa's heart squeezed and her hand rested on her right pocket.

"We cannot pay him in our hair." Tessa hissed out of the side her mouth at David. "Is there money or something in our bag?" Tessa asked David still whispering, her fingers at her pocket as if to check if something was still there. Her face was pinched in worry, she had no idea how to explain sympathetic magic to David. Tessa had read enough urban fantasy novels to know better than giving her full name or something like hair or blood to someone who could do magic, and this man had shown he could do magic. There was a chance he might not know how to use their hair against them, but that wasn't something she was willing to risk. "Or maybe the river cools further down and we can cross safely. This is a terrible idea."
