(Set some time after Thor: The Dark World)

For most of his life Loki had wanted to be king, to sit on the throne and rule all of Asgard like his father, Odin. But as he grew older and fell further into Thor’s shadow, always coming up as second best, that want only grew and soon Loki was willing to do just about anything to fulfil it. Taking over Midgard, or at least attempting to had been one such thing, one that didn’t quite go as expected. Loki’s time under Thano’s control, and being locked in his cell had only fueled his hunger for power until his wish came true.

Being king of Asgard however all as he had expected. Yes, he got to rule, and make the final decision as he saw fit. Yes, Asgardians finally respected him, finally listened to him without scorn or ridicule. He was their king. Except, he wasn’t. Hidden under the guise of the All-Father, Loki still had to act as though Odin still sat upon the throne despite the king being imprisoned below the palace in his own prison. The man he despised still had the last laugh.

It was about midday and Loki found himself still listening to the seemingly never ending problems of the people. One after the other they would come, pleading with their king about every problem they had, from the bad crops to how a neighbour owed them gold from that bet weeks ago. Slouched, with one hand on his chin, Loki half listened to the latest issue. The two Asgardians were in a heated debate, probably the most excitement the court had seen all day. Listening to the pair bicker, Loki finally had enough. Standing, his voice echoed off the pillars.

“Enough! I tire of this ceaseless nonsense. Pay the man the gold and be done with this!” Clock billowing behind him, Loki descended the steps and made to leave the throne room for the privacy of his own, or rather the king’s chambers.

Once away from prying eyes, Loki dropped the illusion, looking at his own green eyes and pale complexion once more. A long sigh sounded from the god as he rubbed at his face with one hand. It wasn’t unheard of for the king to disappear for a few days at a time, many of the royal court figuring it was from the stress of ruling the realm, as well as having lost both his son, and wife in such a short time. So when Loki made the decision to leave Asgard in favour of a simpler people it was to nobody’s great surprise.

Midgard was one of those realms that made Loki wonder. It was both fascinating and bizarre all at once, and never ceased to amaze the god with how backwards or infuriating the people could be. The streets of New York provided a familiar landmark, though now it no longer burned, or crawled with Chitauri. Once more illusioned as a young man of this realm, Loki took to the streets, appearing as just another mortal taking in the sights and sounds of the city. Off in the distance a familiar tower stood. A smirk came to Loki’s face as he wondered just how easy it would be to get in this time should he so choose to pay his favourite Midgardians a visit.

It seemed like a rather nice day today. There was no rain, and the sun was outshining. It was a good day to walk to the coffee shop. The female needed her coffee for the day. Without, she would likely not be able to function that well. It was important to stay alert at all times and be prepared whatever came their way. Who knows if there would be another attack again. Like, for example, Loki. Everyone knew who the God of Mischief was. His name was very filmer to the female.

Denna kept on walking as she made her way to the coffee shop. She could smell the other food in the shops as she walked passed them. It was certainly tempting to go to one of them, but she wanted her coffee first. Plus, they did have some snacks at the coffee shop. Not to mention, it was cheaper too. She would rather spend less than a lot on a small snack.

All of a sudden, her phone went off and she went to check. She walked past Loki and accidentally elbowed him as she tried to text something really quick. Realizing her mistake, she stopped before truing to Loki. The girl had no idea this was Loki. She just thought he was some random person. " I'm sorry. " She said, as she looked over at him. She wasn't sure how he would take it. Would he either yell at her or accept her apology? The girl was hoping he would just let it slide. She didn't feel like being yelled at for a simple mistake.

Preferring his own company and the solitude his own chambers, or even the library had once provided, Loki still couldn’t understand what Midgardians liked about being so crowded. It was true he hadn’t seen all of the realm, only a small percentage, but New York was like an ant nest. People were everywhere, scurrying off in all directions, some clearly with a destination and a time limit in mind, while others dawdled aimlessly as though in some sort of daze. These were the ones Loki liked the least. Already he had been pushed, shoved, jabbed, and nearly knocked over by these insolent mortals! If only they knew just who it was they were jostling.

Just as Loki had turned back from nearly snarling at one of such people, Loki felt a sharp jab to the side. Stopping, he turned on the individual responsible for it, ready to treat them to an equally sharp tongue when he paused. This one had also stopped instead of rushing off and pretending nothing had happened, and they were apologizing?

“That is...quite alright. Though I would refrain from doing such things too often. You never know who you might be jabbing.” He replied, aware that they were both now blocking the sidewalk, forcing the sea of people to part around them. Why had he not shouted? Or made some barbed comment or snide remark? Maybe it was simply the shock of a Midgardian actually showing some manners. Or maybe the god of mischief was looking to see what he could stir up.

Deanna was prepared to be yelled at by this guy. To her luck, he didn't. It surprised the female as some of them weren't that nice. It was like the worst thing you could do if you elbowed them. Well, everybody was mostly in a hurry in this city. Not to mention, it was a bit crowded. Traffic was the worst as everybody wanted to get to their place. She was glad that she didn't drive as it wasn't cheap at all to own a car.

Deanna smiled at the male as he didn't yell. The tone of his voice didn't seem like he was really mad. It seemed he was fine with it. She was about to say something, but she didn't, when she noticed they were blocking the sidewalk. It wasn't the best place to talk, but the other people didn't say anything about it. Instead, they had just walked around the two.

Deanna then turned her attention to the male again. " Yeah, I will keep that in mind. What's your name? " She asked. She was certainly curious about who this guy was. Little did she know, it was still Loki. What name would he even tell her? If he gave his real name to her, then she would probably suspect something about him.

His lack of an outburst seemed to have caught the woman off guard, but she recovered soon enough. Midgardians, at least in this city, seemed to have a short fuse when it came to matters of aggression. The amount of honking horns, shouts, and curses streaming past them was enough to go off of. Loki had been witness to the way some people reacted to being simply brushed against on these streets. Angry words and gestures were as common as the yellow cars that added to the congested traffic.

Raising an eyebrow at the girl as she continued to stand next to him, Loki wondered if there was something more she wanted, if perhaps this had all been a trick to get his attention. The people around them made no comment of them standing there, aside from the occasional pointed look, and Loki assumed this too was a common occurrence.

The attention back on him, Loki wasn’t all that shocked to hear the woman asking his name. Perhaps there was some ulterior motive to this than. He couldn’t give his real name of course, he may as well send a message straight to the Avengers saying ‘Here I am, come get me’! But this also wasn’t Loki’s first time being disguised on Midgard.

“I’m Luke.” He gave with a smile. “And you are?”

Deanna wasn't the type of person to get mad like the others. She was kind, and wouldn't hurt a soul unless they chose to hurt her. She just wouldn't stand there, and let someone harm her. She ignored the looks from the strangers. It didn't matter to her. If they did continue to talk, maybe she could offer some coffee. It was the least she could do since she did accidentally elbow him. They would also be out of the way too.

" Deanna. It's nice to meet you. Maybe I could get you some coffee. It's the least I can do for accidentally elbowing you. " She said. She didn't mean to sound like a creep or anything to the guy. She was just trying to be nice. Would he even accept her offer or decline it? If he did decline it, she didn't mind at all. He had a right to say no or yes.

On the other hand, she did still need her coffee. Just one cup of coffee would be fine. Having another one would just make the girl hyper. She didn't need to hyper in front of this guy.

And so the fun began. In the many years Loki had been alive, and in the number of times he had visited other realms, taken on new personas, and lead a life of lies, every time was a new adventure. It was part of the beauty of being able to alter his appearance, a new start. If only that worked so easily.

The offer she gave, coffee, it wasn’t something the god could ever remember having had before. He had passed a few shops advertising this beverage, clearly it was a popular choice on Midgard, though Loki wondered if it was a realm wide thing or only this city. What harm could there be in trying some?

“You will have to excuse my ignorance.” Loki started. “Coffee is not something I’ve ever had before.” He knew this could possibly give Deanna a reason to question him, but the risk was minor. “I assume you have your own preference as to where to acquire such a thing?” He had accepted, without actually saying yes, but it was a start. His speech already set him apart from those around them, but having been raised in the courts of Asgard, preferring the life of a scholar over a warrior, it had become part of who he was.

Deanna was a bit confused but didn't question him about. Then again, there were some people that had never had coffee before. It wasn't a drink that everybody loves. Some people hated it well others didn't. She couldn't really question him about it as it would just be wrong to do. Smiling, she nodded at Loki's question.

" It's alright. I certainly do. I can't go a day without getting coffee from there. " Deanna said before she chuckled softly. They had the best coffee there. It was made fresh daily so it never had a burnt or bad taste. " It's not too far from where we are. Maybe just a 5-minute walk. " She said. The coffee shop was never really busy at this time. Usually in the early morning since everybody wanted their coffee on their way to work. That's why Deanna always went later in the day of avoiding the crowd.

" It's usually not busy at this time. It's only busy in the morning. I usually take my coffee with two sugars and cream. " Deanna said. She hated bland coffee as it had no taste to it at all.

Thankfully Deanna didn’t question him, though there did appear to be something there, something not said. Either she was more reserved, which to Loki wasn’t a bad thing, how many things had he kept to himself (and still did)?

Following what was being said, Loki nodded as Deanna confirmed his assumption.

“Lead on then.” He said, letting her take the lead. It would be a new experience, one in which Loki was unsure of. The way Deanna described her own order, Loki wondered just how many varieties and ways of taking one’s coffee there were. How was he to know what he liked? He knew he had a sweet tooth, honeyed cakes and sweet wines being a favourite of his on Asgard.

“So you are dependent on coffee?” The god asked, wondering how true this was of others. There were those on his own realm who were dependent on things such as ale or mead from the time they woke in the morning, or later, until they fell to their beds or wherever they landed. If that were the case, this coffee could be a dangerous substance indeed.

Deanna smiled when he told her to lead the way. The girl wasted no time starting to walk. She didn't walk that fast as she didn't end up wanting to lose Loki in the crowd of people. If she did, then the girl would have a hard time finding him. There were so many people so it would be hard to pick out Loki if he did get lost. He would just probably blend in with the others that were walking too.

Deanna did look back to make sure he was following and that he was keeping up with her. She did often walk fast, but she slowed her pace to allow him to walk with her. She chuckled softly when he asked her the question. " Sure am. It's like medicine to keep me going in the morning. I have tried energy drinks, but their way too sweet for me. Not to mention, they're not that good for you. " She said. There was a way to much sugar in energy drinks. Too much could kill you.

Deanna wondered if he did ever have energy drinks. Surely he had too, right? Or was he mostly just the type that drinks tons of water to keep hydrated. Well, water was much better for you then really any other surgery drink. " I just would put maybe one cup of sugar and cream if you want in your coffee. Too much can make it very sweet. " She said.

Loki waited for Deanna to begin walking before following soon after. It was easy to keep up with her, the crowded sidewalks making speed a tricky option. Falling in next to her, Loki alternated his gaze between Deanna and the way before them, ever so often giving the surrounding people, shops, and traffic a quick glance. Even when walking through the grand halls of Asgard’s palace the god often kept his head down, moving from point A to point B with as little contact as possible.

His question seemed to amuse her, he hadn’t been expecting her to admit the dependency had there been one.

“I see.” Loki mused, not knowing about energy drinks either. “Coffee doesn’t sound all that much better if you depend on it so.” He pointed out. As he had guessed it sounded a lot like Asgardian drinks of choose in that they weren’t good for one’s health, yet enjoyed without end.

“Another way to hasten one’s demise.” The god muttered, the stupidity of Midgardians ever apparent. “But I suppose everyone has their poison.”

Deanna kept on walking as she glanced at Loki a few times just to make sure she kept up with her. She did have to keep track of what was in front of her so she didn't end up bumping or running into someone. It wouldn't be good at all if she did make someone else mad. She didn't need that happen when they were on the way to the coffee shop. They were getting rather close to it as the smell of the food became stronger. It did make her hungry for a muffin this morning. It would go with her coffee for sure.

Deanna looked at him before chuckling. " Yeah, but it doesn't matter to me. I don't think much of anything is good for you as they put all that extra stuff in it. " She said. Even know coffee wasn't that good for you, she would still drink it. All that mattered was that she enjoyed drinking the liquid.

" So how long have you lived here? " Deanna asked, as she was curious. She did want to know a little more about him. Might as well since he had accepted her offer of getting him coffee. Plus, it didn't hurt to know a little bit about someone new. It wasn't every day she had a conversation with a stranger she didn't know that well.

Loki guessed they were nearing the coffee shop as the smell of food and what he was assuming was coffee reached them. The slightest pang of hunger hit him at the scent and the god tried to recall the last time he had eaten. Most times he would simply used a spell to make the hunger go away, the same with thirst. It came in handy when he was busy pouring over an old tome or simply acting as king. Of course he did eat from time to time and made an appearance at the many feasts thrown back home, but the younger prince was never one to stuff himself as his brother did.

He nodded at Deanna’s comment on too much of anything being bad for you.

“Something we can agree on. We all have our indulgences.”

Her next question had the god pausing as he came up with an answer.

“Not very long at all. I’m visiting rather than taking up permanent residence.” Not a complete lie. “Yourself? Have you been here your whole life?” He asked in return. Loki had never been the one for small talk, or making friends for that matter. Thor would drag him along with his companions but Loki knew he wasn’t always wanted, and often didn’t want to be there either.

Deanna looked over at him as she smiled. A least they agreed on something. Then again, everybody did have their own opinions when it came to certain stuff. She then looked ahead as she was starting to get hungry. The girl just couldn't wait to get some coffee and a muffin to go along with it.

Denna then nodded as she listened to him. " I have been living here pretty much my whole life. My parents weren't a fan of moving at all. All the packing and everything makes you tired. I don't mind packing, but my parents just hated it. We had to help one of our friends and she had way too much stuff. " She said. She did enjoy living here even know it was quite busy here. Still, it didn't matter to Deanna. She was just so used to it by now.

" I do want to go somewhere new eventually. I have never really been anywhere outside of the united states. " Deanna said. She had been too a couple of states. The place she did want to visit the most was the united kingdom. She always had an interest in it and had heard so many stories of how neat it was. One day, Deanna would probably go there. Right now, she didn't have the money as it was quite expensive for sure.

Deanna could see the coffee shop, but luckily there wasn't a line at all. They wouldn't have to wait for an awhile to get a cup of coffee and something to eat.

Listening to the problems other people had with their families, it all sounded so trivial. Of course Loki had never had to pack up and move, having always lived in Asgard. Being a royal also set him apart. He was sure Deanna had never had to learn how to act in the king’s court, how to rule, or even how to fight with a sword for that matter. Loki also had the benefit of magic. Moving things from one place to another was as simple as pulling it from thin air with hardly a second thought.

He could understand wanting to go someplace new. As a child, Loki had seen the pictures of other realms and planets, read about the cultures, and imagined what it would be like to visit each of them outside of being a diplomat.

“I would encourage travel when you are able. Learning about a new place can really be an experience.” Loki said. There were limitations naturally, not everyone was capable of using the means of travel he did.

As he glanced up Loki saw the sign for what he assumed was the place they were heading. Unlike much of the city, the shop was nearly empty.

“Is it always so...quiet?” The god asked. It wasn’t that the shop was entirely silent, there was still plenty of sounds, but compared to the busyness of the street it was bliss. Maybe if he liked this coffee this place could be visited again.

Of course, Deanna didn't know anything about Loki's world. She wasn't from Asgard at all but was from earth. She was born on this planet and lived here. This was her home. She still didn't even know she was talking to Loki. She thought he was someone new that she had met. The poor girl still didn't know at all, and probably would never. Unless Loki accidentally spilled out some information about him.

Deanna smiled as she looked over at him. " I will sure keep that in mind. I know they have cruises where you can go to different places across the world. Except, it's not that cheap going on a cruise. It's rather expensive. " She said. She had never been on a boat before but heard great news about cruises. It seemed fine, but there was a chance she could get seasick. It would be no fun to get sick on a boat that you had to spend a week on.

Deanna smiled when they had reached the coffee shop. She chuckled softly before looking at Loki again. " Yep. That's the nice thing about a coffee shop. You don't have to worry about it being loud at all. It's nice to spend an hour or so here. Especially if you just want peice and quiet. " She said. She still couldn't wait to get her cup of coffee, and a snack to go along with it. " I love this coffee shop. It's a good place to go if you just want to relax. " She said.

Money was another thing Loki had never been lacking. Gold ran through the hands of the royal family like water, and the god had never thought twice about paying someone off, or offering a bribe of a silk pouch of golden coins.

“I haven’t been on a ship in a long time.” Loki mused as he took in the sight around him. Of all the forms of transportation Asgard had, boats and ships were not common ones aside from when there was a death.

Learning that the coffee shop was always this quiet had a smile curling on Loki’s lips.

“Few places are like that.” He said, taking a moment to glance at the list of offered beverages on the boards overhead. It seemed like a never ending list, each drink differing in name, additions, and the few that had photos varied widely in appearance. He noticed a young woman at a corner table, a book in one hand as she sipped at whatever brew she had decided on. Yes, this place could be enjoyable.

The place carried a bitter odor, with enough sweet to make it bearable and even pleasant.

“Shall we get the coffee then?” Loki asked, waiting for Deanna to take the lead. She knew what she was doing here so it was best she took the lead. “I wasn’t aware there would be so many different types.” He said, once more looking to the list of names written on the menu board. Some of them looked much fancier than others, while some looked more like a dessert.

Deanna nodded as she listened to him. " Ah, I have never even been on one. I don't even know if I would even get Seasick if I went on one. " She said. She didn't want to end up getting sick on vacation if she did ever go on one.

Deanna then scanned the menu too. She wondered if there were any new drinks they had come out with. It looked like there wasn't so she decided to just get her usual drink. Black coffee with two sugars and fresh vanilla creamer. She did wonder what drink Loki was going to order. There was quite a lot to even choose from.

Deanna looked back at Loki as she nodded. " Yeah, sounds good to me. " She said. She then grabbed some money from the pocket of her leather jacket. She didn't carry a purse unless she was going somewhere like a party. Deanna then decided to order first. She ordered her usually before taking a step to the side so Loki could order. She was curious about what drink Loki would order.

Loki had never been seasick, or really sick at all now that he thought about it. Perhaps it was an Asgardian thing, or in his case, a Jotun thing, or maybe Midgardians were simply more susceptible to disease and illness. It could also have been something to do with his magic, but that train of thought would need to wait for another time.

As Deanna turned her attention to the menu, Loki tried to navigate it as well. The simplest drinks were what grabbed his interest. While he had a sweet tooth, and may even have enjoyed one of the other kinds, now was not the time for that. Midgardian sweets could be completely different from Asgard. Best not to make a fool of himself now.

From the corner of his eye he could see her pulling out some money. It was no problem for the trickster to illusion the same currency into existence as he was sure the shopkeepers of this realm would not be accepting of gold coins. He listened to her place her own order before it was his turn. He could easily order the same thing, keeping it simple and going with what had been suggested to him.

In the end he did keep it simple. Black coffee, two cream, two sugar. If he liked that maybe next time he could get a little more adventurous.

Deanna smiled as she watched Loki order what he wanted. She then looked around in hopes of finding an open table. Luckily there was one in the open corner. It was next to a window that had the view of the street. Cars were driving back and forth. People were also walking on the sidewalk to start work of the day. " There's a spot we can sit over there. " She said as she pointed to the table in the corner. She did want to know more about him so the girl would probably ask him a few questions. She wouldn't ask anything personal as she didn't want to make him mad.

There were still a few more people coming into the coffee shop, but they were taking their coffee to go. Often, Deanna would do the same thing, but sometimes it was just nice to sit down to relax. Like today for sure. Without another word, she made her way over to the table. Once she reached the table, she pulled out her chair before sitting down. She glanced out the window before looking over at Loki as she waited for him to join her.

Steam came from her coffee as it was hot. It was perfect for a cold winter today as the hot beverage would sure warm you up. Even if your hands were cold, it would also warm them up too. She then blew on the coffee to cool it down before taking a sip of it. Deanna didn't want to end up burning her tongue as it didn't feel so good at all. It would hurt for a couple of minutes, and she didn't want that to happen at all. Especially, when she was trying to drink her nice hot coffee.
