Juniper had hesitated too long before making her attack while Geir was unbalanced, she knew she would regret that later on. She dodged every swing of the sword, building time until she could attack herself. She was reluctant to be in offense, fearing that she would go too far and cut him. He looked fragile and she couldn't risk it. Instead she planned to remain on the defensive, blocking every swing until Geir left an opening for her to take advantage. She already noticed that accuracy was a slight issue for him.

Picking up her speed, she pushed back every attack he made. It became tiring after a while, she felt a growing tremble in her arms, she wasn't used to holding such a heavy weapon for so long. Immediately she changed tactic, she had no choice but to attack. Pushing Geir back once more, she made her charge at him.

Not paying attention to the fight, Aynir rolled over to Razeth and leaned against her. She appeared to be keenly watching her master and so Aynir made no fuss to disturb her. In fact, he followed example and raised his eyes to Juniper. He could see that she was struggling but too stubborn to show it to anyone; he was able to read the signs. He wished his master luck.

Geir eventually used up his energy to train with Juniper. Noticing that Juniper was exhausted due to the fact that her weapon was, in fact, heavy, Geir seized his training. He waited for her to catch her breath, while he did the same. "Training is hard, isn't it?" Geir said in a calm voice, "Hey, are you feeling okay? You don't look so good."

Meanwhile, Razeth noticed that Aynir leaned against her. Although she would not mind being leaned as long as Aynir was not too heavy for her to hold up. Of course, it would be eimplied that Aynir really liked Razeth, in which in return, she was not prepared for. As she watched Aynir prevented Juniper from falling down, Razeth stood up and walked towards her tired master. She snorted at him, telling him that she needed to rest.

"I see..." Geir responded to Razeth, "Maybe it would be best to cease training for now. Too much training could tire us out completely."

Juniper slammed her sword into the ground and supported her body against it beads of sweat sliding down her face. She hadn't realised how exhausted she was but it all added up. They were up early for a morning run before breakfast, followed by class training and now the extra training with Geir. She heard her mother's voice in her head; "Pace yourself, June, you should be more careful," which made her shudder. She tried not to think of her mother too often.

"I'm fine," she uttered. "It's all these layers making me hot." Unable to admit she was tired to Geir, fearing that she would seem weak to her training partner, she stuck with her lie and removed her heavy outer tunic. Underneath she wore a thinner cotton vest, which clung to her skin due to sweat highlighting her curves. The family crest on her right arm was exposed, it was a pair of dragon wings fanned out and below it was a naked oak tree. "I'll ready again in a minute."

Aynir gave a low growl, warning her to slow down. He nuzzled against her, offering himself as a leaning prop. Stubbornly, both glared at each other until Juniper sighed and raised her hands in defeat. "Actually, I'm going to have to call it quits for today," she admitted with a slight pout. Annoyed with herself, she could not bring herself to look Geir in the eyes and so locked her gaze on the ground by their feet.

Geir noticed how pouty Juniper felt After forfeited the match. He could understand how Juniper felt when it comes to losing. Losing was actually a bad thing. Razeth came to Geir, lifting him up from the ground with her muzzle. Upon looking at Geir, she spoke with a low growl. And yet Geir was able to understand what she said. He must be concerned about Juniper because losing was one of her biggest weaknesses. Even worse, being dead last would be the death of her. Geir approached Juniper with concern in his eyes, hoping that he could at least cheer her up.

"Hey, Juniper?" Geir asked her with curiosity, "Are you feeling okay? I'm sorry this day didn't turn out fine as you thought..." But then he frowned and looked down, telling her his confession, "I need to be honest. I'm not much of a fighter myself."

A warm wind brushed passed the mountain, it made Juniper thankful that she had removed a layer as it swept through them.
She raised her eyes as Geir approached and smiled softly as he confessed to her. "I'm fine, I..." she paused, biting her bottom lip as she configured a stream of words that she would be comfortable confessing. "I have a hard time knowing my limits, all of this comes so easy to the others." She sighed again. Perhaps her father was right, perhaps she would let down the Galewood family even though she desperately longed to prove him wrong.

Soothingly -as soothing as one with calloused hands could- she pat his shoulder. "You'll learn though, you're only a kid after all." Then the realisation that she was almost beaten by someone her junior had set in. There should have been no contest, especially with her years of training, already Geir was her equal. She tried not to show the worry on her face and faked a smile. "We should head back soon, it's almost sunset. We can train more tomorrow."

"Yeah. If I don't get back to my parents, they're gonna be upset with me," Geir replied back, "I could think of badder things if I stay out here for too long. Sometimes I think they're overprotective." With that being said, Geir climbed onto Razeth's back as she started to spread her wings. "Yeah.. we can train tomorrow just like you said. Well... so long." Geir waved goodbye, "Let's fly back home, Razeth."

Razeth flapped her wings as she lifted herself off the ground. She began making a roundabout around Juniper and Anyir. Thus they fly away from the two. Geir looked back at Juniper with a small smile on his face. He felt a lot more confident thanks to her, and for the first time in his life, he made a friend who had no problem with his appearance. But then again, he could help Juniper out whenever she had trouble with something.

This was not just the start of their friendship, but it was the beginning of their adventure.

"Yeah, looking forward to it," she said, waving as Geir and Razeth set off. Juniper lingered for a moment, Aynir nuzzling into her neck, watching the pair fly out of sight. Immediately she dropped the stoic act, sighing as she slumped against her dragon. He made a sound similar to purring while she stroked his head.

"We'll get better soon, boy, just you wait," she said. Juniper wasn't sure who she was reassuring, Aynir or herself, but it was enough to perk herself a little to get home. She straddled the dragon and pushed off from the ground. Once in mid air, they rode the wind a while; enjoying the view of the setting sun before heading home. Her father wasn't too strict on curfew, especially if she had a good enough reason to be out. Typically the house was quiet anyway, her father would be busy with dragon rider business. In fact, they saw little of each other. Her fingers clasped around the necklace that fluttered in the wind; it was a small wooden oval pendent with an engraving of tree branches 'dancing in the breeze', as her mother described it.

On ground again, she refocused her thoughts. She thought of Geir, how shy he was when he first approached her. She felt honoured that out of all the riders, he felt that she was the right one to talk to. She had a training partner now, a friend that relied on her and vice versa. Suddenly she became all the more determined. "Alright Aynir, no more pity parties from now on," she declared. "I can't get better if I'm going to wallow, right?" Aynir cocked his head to the side, surprised by the sudden statement but happy to comply.

Meanwhile, Geir and Razeth returned to their own home. Razeth landed safely on the grassy ground, and Geir jumped off her. "Well, I'm off to bed... Sleep well, girl." Geir patted Razeth on the head, and she purred softly in return. He approached his home made of stone and wood. Quite an interesting architectural design in his own opinion. In his home, he reencountered own his father, Ocelot Sanford. Ocelot was quite an understanding and the most serious person in the household. He was quite happy to see Geir arrive back in time before curfew. He noticed something about Geir holding his own arm and with a small smile.

"Geir, what has gotten you so moody?" Ocelot questioned as he kneeled down to his son, "Usually you were content every day, but this time you had a more positive ending. Tell me your story, son."

"Well, there was this girl I met at the training camp," Geir explained, "And like me, she had a dragon. I noticed her instructor berated her despite her effort, but I just could not let that go on... So... for the first time in my life, she and I were friends."

Ocelot was surprised to hear that somebody tolerated Geir by his appearance and his shy nature. He was actually happy to hear such good news, and patted his son's shoulder. "Well son, an instructor like him does not know the meaning of "effort." Tell me, what was your friend's problem?"

"She... well," Geir scratched the back of his head awkwardly, "It's hard to say..."

"Interesting," Ocelot walked towards the window and looked outside, "Son? Do you know what a perfectionist is?" He began to explain to his son what it was as he watched the stars, "It's somebody who acts like a person with no flaws, but does not acknowledge his or her mistakes. Usually there are a few perfectionists who expect better from their pupils. But no matter how hard they try, they don't seem to impress the perfectionist enough, or worse, at all."

Geir didn't realized about that until now. The instructor who berated Juniper from earlier was one of them. He wished he could help her out, but even so, the instructor was a stern type. Perhaps he was worrying too much about Juniper and thought she could improve on her own, seeing that she was more capable than him based on her experiences. His father turned towards his son and gave him advice.

"If you do encounter your instructor who happens to be a perfectionist like him, don't take it too personally," Ocelot explained further, "Learn it from your mistakes and improve. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it will be more likely to grant you more experience than before. Just think of them as... well... notes. Keep them in your mind from now on."

On the way home, Juniper removed the saddle from Aynir's back and escorted him to the Galewood holding. The entire family kept dragons there, although there weren't many to be kept at the moment. The Galewood's were dwindling, they had not quite recovered from the last great war. Juniper opened the gate. The bonded pair nuzzled for the last time till morning. "I'll see you at sunrise," she cooed, as she slipped away. Entering the holding, Aynir immediately noticed Zephyr -Juniper's father's dragon - he remained low to the ground, hoping not to attract too much attention as he scuttled towards his bed. Fortunately the dim lighting made it easy for him to wander unnoticed. He and Zephyr were not well acquainted and neither was Zephyr the playful type. She had seen her wars and saw no need for games. On his bed, he curled his body in and rested.

Quietly, Juniper entered her home. She had seen the candles flickering from the outside window and assumed her father was home. Unfortunately she was not quiet enough.

"Juniper?" a deep monotone voiced called out.

"Yes, I'm home," she sighed. Yonec -her father- pushed out a chair beside him for her to take. He was in the middle of reading a report and did not look up to greet her. As she neared, he directed her attention to the pot in front of the fire place; stew their housekeeper had made for them. In silence, Juniper took herself a bowl and ate. She did not try to talk, she waited for her father to finish his task.

"I spoke to Gellid today," he said, dropping his report to the table and looking at his daughter for the first time since she arrived. Juniper swallowed hard, a piece of potato lodged in the throat. She hated when her instructor spoke to her father behind her back. "He tells me you're taking a more reckless approach to your training."

"I would describe it more as 'bold'."

"I think the word he used was 'sloppy'," he replied more sternly. Juniper shrugged her shoulders and returned to shoveling the stem into her mouth. The room became quiet, with only the crackle of the fire filling the void. "June," he began, pausing as he saw her wince. Only Bridget called her that name. He noticed the dark circles around her eyes. "...iper, finish up eating and go to bed. Gellid tells me that you'll be doing drills tomorrow." Juniper followed his instructions and went to bed.

In the morning, Juniper rose with the sun. Coming downstairs, Juniper found her father sat in the same spot as the night before being served porridge by their housekeeper. After breakfast, Juniper ran to the Galewood holding. Aynir waited eagerly at the gate, his tail waving as their eyes met.

They began their run. On their route, Juniper asked some of the passers by if they knew where a 'Geir Sanford' lived. Finally an elderly woman answered; "Geir Sanford? Oh, you mean Ocelot's boy. That way." The name rang familiar in her ears, she wondered if Ocelot Sanford was a dragon rider like her father. She followed the directions towards a house made of wood and stone and knocked on the door.

After getting a knock on the door, the father Ocelot Sanford opened the door in front of Juniper. His reaction of meeting the girl for the first time surprised him. "Oh, I did not expect any visitors," he said with a cheery tone, "You must be one of Geir's friends, am I right?" Without furthor ado, Ocelot turned around and called his son over downstairs. "Geir, you have visitors!"

However, there was no response. Geir was in his room, trying to get himself dressed. The father called one more time. "Come on, Geir! No need to be shy!" Geir heard from his father's words as he immediately finished it up, but probably badly dressed due to being rushed into such things. He ran downstairs while unaware that his appearance was... well, for the lack of the better term, messy. Ocelot gasped and facepalmed at his son's look. "Oi yoi yoi, Geir...!"

"What is it Dad?" Geir asked.

"Please do me a favor and look at yourself," Ocelot said with a bit of embarrassment, "You have a guest talking to you."

Geir looked at himself as instructed and yelped. He covered his embarrassing parts exploited in the public area of his own home. "Ahh-!! Juniper! S-Sorry... I'm... uhh..." He also held his face, blushing in a state of fear But it was noted that it was not the first time he did that, and it was unintentional in his standards.

Ocelot leaned over to Juniper and whispered in her ear. "He's not a morning person actually," he quietly comment in private with her.

"Yes sir, I'm Juniper Galewood," she said, smiling politely. She held out her hand to shake his and bowed her head slightly - it was common practice to lower her head when in the company of dragon riders. Juniper averted her eyes as Geir stumbled into the room. Aynir chortled, pushing his head past Juniper to get a better look of the house. He was a nosy creature, rolling her eyes, she pushed his snout back out the door. "I might be able to fix that," she replied with a cheeky grin. Ocelot seemed approachable, less stern than her father.

After giving Geir -what she considered- a sufficient amount of time to readjust him, Juniper, with crossed arms, returned her gaze to Geir. "I thought we could train again today. You can join us in class," she began. Aynir began looking around for Razeth, eagerly wanting to play with the other dragon. "Apparently we're doing drills today." When Geir was close enough, she hushed her voice and whispered: "Or we could skip it and it be just us." Unsure on how Geir's father would take his son being whisked off alone with a girl almost twice his weight, she spoke softly.

Today she did not feel like trying to win the approval of the fellow legacies and Gellid. Of course, she wouldn't skip practice altogether but a day off from class might be the break she needs to get her back on track.

"Ah, so you must be my boy's training partner," Geir's father chuckled and patted Juniper's back, "I think you and Geir would make great partners together. Geir could use some guidance from somebody who knows more than he does."

"Daaaaad...!" Geir just returned - and properly dressed at least - and heard what his father was talking about. Still feeling embarressed, even after that statement, he covered his face in shame. "I'm so sorry, Juniper... he's um... well.... Too excited to hear the news about it." Regardless of the situation, he joined Juniper. Upon hearing the whisper, Geir replied softly to her. "Just us? I don't know if it's a good idea... The instructors will be angry at us for skipping out."

"I'm sure you two will get along just fine!" Ocelot said with a big grin on his face, and kneeled down to his son, "And just remember when I taught you yesterday. There's no such thing as perfection."

Meanwhile, Aynir could sense that Razeth was nearby. And apparently, she was hiding somewhere waiting to pounce playfully on her dragon friend. With the element of surprise, Razeth leaped out of the trees and tackled Aynir from behind. She was waiting for him to arrive after all. "Razeth! We have to go!" Geir called out his dragon, but she may be too busy playing with Aynir. Geir was a patient person who thought about Razeth taking care of her things first.

"I'll do my best, sir," she replied. "Although I think Geir has some surprises he'll teach me." She remarked humbly and smiled at Geir. Already he was a great dragon rider, she would not be surprised that he would surpass her sooner or later.

"I might but you've never been to a class, pretty sure you'll be fine." She replied with a wink.

The dragons tumbled forward on the ground. Aynir waved his tail with speed to encourage his attacker to loosen their grip on him. Realising it was Razeth who tackled him, he responded more playfully, chirping in delight over her presence. He crawled out from her grasp, keeping his body low and his tail waving, tackled her upfront. He made a low grunting noise which Juniper could tell was him laughing.

"Come on you two, you can play after training," Juniper said, giggling at the playing dragons. She turned again to Geir. "Shall we head out then?"

"Let's go then!" Geir nodded.

Razeth growled softly before approaching her master. She let Geir mount on her before she flapped her green wings, readying herself to take off. She lifted herself off the ground and flew way to their destination. But Geir was, in fact, never been to class before, and he may fear that people may pick on him on his appearance. He should not let them do that, and he must stay positive. He decided to follow Juniper and Anyir since he had no idea where that class was.

Besides, what could possibly go wrong? After all, it was Geir's first day in class, and it's not like he could get instantly bullied by others there, right? Well, for Razeth, she was actually protective her master, and anyone who dared to harm him could trigger her bad side. Consider that as a warning.

Feeling conflicted, Juniper did not know if she was glad or disappointed that they were going to class. She couldn't turn back now, it was Geir's first time and she wanted to do right by him and Razeth. Hopefully Gellid would go easy on them.

Aynir, being the difficult creature that he is and still in the playful mood, pounced around Juniper. She remained still, glaring at him with her hands on her hips until he settled, ultimately he did. Swinging her leg over his back, they took off and led the way to class. The meeting place every morning was the training arena; an enclosed circular field near the docks. It was a short flight to get there, in fact they could have walked but Juniper much rather make an entrance.

Already Gellid was there, laying out the weapons and tools they would use that day. Part of the class had gathered, conversing among themselves mostly bragging and banter. Juniper and Aynir landed; making sure that the landing was delicate enough to appease the great Gellid. Dismounting, Juniper gave a half smile at the group of boys but they paid very little attention. Instead of her usual standing close in hopes to overhear a topic that she might be able to join in, she stuck close to Geir. She hoped she would be enough of a bodyguard to keep the taunts away.

"Good morning Juniper," Gellid said, as he neared. "And who might this be?"

"Geir Sanford, he'll be joining us from now on... if you allow it, sir," Juniper responded, bowing her head politely.

"That is perfectly fine... if you are able to keep up with the class, Mr. Sanford."

Geir also dismounted and followed Juniper there. Again, it was his first time at the academy, and he felt shy about it at first. He would think people would not accept him for who he was nor did not want to be friends with him. However, with Juniper as his bodyguard, it would not be a problem for him. Upon meeting Gellid the first time, he heard every word from him and gently nod at his statement.

"I'll-- uh... try.." Geir looked at Gellid nervously, "I'll do my best."

However, a few bullies in class noticed Geir's appearance different than others. They snickered softly, thinking about taunting him being an albino child. Geir did not hear them however, but he had a bad feeling about this. A single insult could destroy his reputation. However, the bullies noticed that his dragon Razeth was present and may fear that insulting Geir in front of it could trigger the greenthorn dragon's anger.

Surprisingly, Gellid hadn't noticed Geir's appearance nor could care about it. All he cared about was getting his students to learn properly without fail. Maybe it could be a silver lining of hope for Geir after all?

Gellid returned to his last minute preparations. His dragon; Denzel, a large sea-blue creature with horns arranged like a diadem, emerged from his shaded resting place. He sat near his owner and listened to the crowd of students. Denzel heavily relied on hearing; having lost his sight as a casualty of the last war. He was able to fly still but was not considered fit for battle. Loyal to his flying partner, Gellid retired as a rider and took over at the academy where his stern hand was needed.

Juniper overheard the snickering and took Geir's hand in her, squeezing it firmly. She gave him a reassuring smile and a threatening glare to the other boys while Geir was not looking. She would happily take them all in a fight. Her sword skill may not be impressive but she could wrestle anyone; she could lift Aynir over her head when she tried.

"Gather round class," Gellid called to assembly, clapping his hands for their attention. Juniper led Geir, still clasping on to his hand, to the half circle formation. "To start off with we're going to do laps, I want to see you run around this arena three times. Denzel will lead your dragons on their course." He tapped Denzel twice with two fingers, giving him the signal to take flight. The dragons of the other students fell into line and followed. Aynir nudged Razeth, prompting her to copy as he spread his wings.

Juniper released Geir and spoke quietly; "This is endurance, don't worry about your speed or keeping up, you just need to complete it." The arena was long and wide, it had to be to fit so many students and their dragon plus room for them to train. She worried how Geir might take the very first task of the day. She began jogging, keeping a steady pace.

It was a fairly simple task for a new student like Geir and a new dragon like Razeth. All they had to do was run around the track for a few laps. Readying themselves, they began to jog at a steady pace. Not too fast, and not too slow. To their benefit, it felt like they were exercising to become athletes, but not really.

But to his worry, a few other students began to stare at him, looking at him funny. Geir tried to disregard their antics and kept jogging. But he would fear that they would judge him by his appearance. Razeth snorted at her master, prompted him to pretend they did not exist. All that confidence was making him a little faster, but not too fast. Geir then looked at Juniper jogging the same speed as he was.

"Do we have to do this every day?" Geir asked with curiousity.

Denzel led the dragons around the entire island, weaving in and out through the tall crags. Aynir lingered behind, letting the morning air wake him a little more as he glided through the clouds. He looked for Razeth, hoping that she was keeping up fine. It was hard to see beyond collection of dragon while the sun shined in his eyes.

Gellid remained in the same position, taking notes as he observed the students run. The boy leading the run was tall and athletic, he slowed his pace so that his friends could catch up to him. Glancing back at Geir, he said: "Great, our class is going to be held back even more now that we have snow white with us." Obnoxiously they all snickered and continued with their childish taunts. Enraged, Juniper picked up her pace, pumping her legs to pass the giggling boys.

"Anything you have to say, you can say it to me," she declared, glaring at them. The boys' giggles burst into a roar of laughter.

"And what will you do about it, Galewood?" Ajax asked, rolling his eyes. His friends followed with quick quips about her 'feminine' demeanor. Juniper's blood boiled. Her fingers coiled up into a tight fist but she resisted throwing punches, she was better than that.

"I'll take anyone who thinks it's okay to insult my friend."

Such insults had damaged Geir's self-esteem. It was enough to make him cry. However, he saw that Juniper had been defending him from a couple of bullies, especially Ajax, from being pushed around. Even Razeth find this situation more tormenting. She joined in by landing on the ground and snarled at the bullies, whom they backed away from the group. This whole assignment had come to a complete halt when the bullying problem occurred during class. Razeth snorted aggressively before protecting her master.

"I knew they would not accept me..." Geir looked at the ground, feeling in a state of despair, "I don't think I belong here." As long as Razeth stayed with Geir, protecting him from those who called him names, Geir would be protected from physical abuse. All he wanted was to be accepted by the group who would treat him like their own.
