Kate sets aside the items she would need to take to the wharf, vile of healing, herbs, and flask of brandy. She get a vile of poppy plant, needle and syringe from a black case. She makes arrangement for a driver of a carriage to take her down.
Her mind races a bit as she knows Captain O'Malley would send sailors to carry her trunk and things to the ship. She knows that the ship should already be in the harbor and hope that who or what Malora delivered would make the trip with her. She had to leave before the winter set in. She was not going to miss Winterfest he favorite time of the year.
She rushes to the main entrance of the college and hails a man with a wagon. "Please sir a drive to the wharf with my trunks. " The driver had seen the mage when he made his deliveries. He was headed that way to go home. He loaded her trunks and Kate sat next to him. "I am sorry this rather urgent. I have a patient down at the wharf. "
The man nods and had the horses in a run down the wharf. Kate pay him a few silver coins. She sees her father's trade ship name for her mother " The Magefox." Kate calls to a mate on the ship, "Please take these to my cabin. I am Lady Katherine."
The sailor speaks to the first mate and runs down the gang plank, "Yes Milady." Kate sees that the captain is busy with loading cargo. She finds the wharf and speaks to a guard. The man sends her to a trader.
The trader is a bear of a man. He is looks menacing and around his waist is a coiled cat of nine. Kate takes a breath and walks over to him confidently. "I have a delivery for Lady Katherine Lyons. The man start to laugh, "You’re her? I can tell ya that beast is not fit for a lady. He's down thar on the left. Ya wont miss tha cage. Ya may want help miss. Tha a beast he is. Been givng us trouble nearly beat the daylights out of em. Now he wont fight."
Kate hid her worry and saw the light was darker and it was difficult to tell if he was man or beast. She approached closer…
By daylight behind her, he sees a young woman dressed in a long blue full skirt, Her bodice is pure white with a matching cotton jacket. The weather in Seville is sunny, 40 F. Kate had on a heavy navy cloak and she carried a large satchel. In her hand is a silver staff that glows blue and green.
Her red hair is braided into a single stand that extends to her waist. She had a very worried expression and walks up to the cage. Her voice soft. He can tell she has fox ears. "Are you alive?"
Her hands waves over the locks..it slides open with a sq-eek and opens. Kate can see the male is chained. Bound by his hands and ankles. His clothes are thread bare, shredded and torn. He is covered in dried blood, sinew and rotten food. By the smell she coughs and swallow hard. "By the gods what did they do to you."
Kate sees his eyes are blackened, his nose swollen, his lips cracked with dried blood, his right cheek a deep purple. His right leg was swollen and covered with a bone deep gash. His whole body was covered with lashes from looked to be whip chain, and blunt object. She heard him wheeze as he breathed.
Kate could not believe her eyes. She knelt to him, removed her cloak and laid it over his shoulders. "I am here to help. Don't even try to talk or move."

Horen shivered as the cloak was put around his shoulders. But he did as the voice had instructed. He hadnt even opened his eyes. Besides, he knew he was a repulsive mess. Just as he knew he was on deaths doorstep. That last fight for his mistress, it had been rigged. He had won many before, and he knew when he started that the fight would be against him. He had fought hard though. He had even killed a few of the bastards, some of the 'best' his 'master' had trained. The dragon had been furious that he had lost 'investments'. Horen only laughed in his mind. He could have broken free long ago, could have killed them all. But his mothers teachings from his childhood had enabled him to survive without losing control. His power was great, and he knew he was more than a match for man y of the so-called 'mages' his master and mistress had employed. His skills had only improved because he had stolen many tomes and magical scrolls over the years. He had always returned them though. He never showed a single soul his true power, his true heritage. After-all, it would only have made it worse. Leaders and people of high power in various governments and lands would have sought him out, to try to buy his loyalty, or to destroy him.

So he had done what he knew he could do. He had become a fighter for his Mistress. She alone had ever shown him kindness after his loss. So she alone had his loyalty. His 'Master' had despised him. More for his skill at defeating his own fighters than anything else. After the fight and being nearly killed, his Mistress had saved him. Had told him she was sending him to another Mistress. One who wouldnt make him fight and who would help him.He hadnt believed he would live through the rough treatment on the way here. He expected to die when they had thrown him in this wretched cell not a day ago. But here she was. The girl he had seen in his vision. The one he would have to trust. So he laid there as she examined his blood stained, filthy white fur.

Kate could on guess at his past. Who beat hom near death. His once beautiful snow white fur was covered in dried blood, sinew, and vegetable matter. She envisioned the humiliation he endured as sailors taunted and tortured him. Would he trust her? How her aunt could do this. Malora had been banished for using the dark art of magic. She went to Lord Draco to learn more of the arts. In doing so, Malora received a reputation of being a cruel mistress. Kate over looked his mangled body.Kaye opened the satchel and pulled out a flask of warm apple cider and held to his bruised, chapped lips. "Little sips. Its apple cider. Sorry I do not have water." Kate cradled him to her.

Horen grunted and sipped the bitter cider. he didnt complain. it was the first drink hed had in several days. He hadnt eaten in a week, or so he thought. The food the sailors had 'provided' wasnt fit for even a rat to eat. The water had been almost as bad, but he had used a tad of his power to at least clean it so he wouldnt die from thirst. He was extremely tired though and he knew he might yet still die. He didnt know what his new mistress would do with him.

The next thing Kate dis was remove the manacles, chains, and thick leather collar. She would latter let him destroy the symbol of his class. She bandaged his wrist that were bleeding from the irons. Then bandaged his ankles. His while body was ice cold. He was dressed in only a filthy loin cloth. "I will get you clothes, a warm bath and soft bed. Ann packed food I am Mage Katherine Lyons. What is you name?"

Her driver walked in, "Quin, help me get him on the ship "The Catelyn. I am sue captain Mallory is ready to set sail. This man will share my cabin. Please have Captain's cabin boy bring him a tub and warm water please."

The man gently picked up the wolf/human and carried him on board. Kate looked at the cargo ship and took a deep breath. Usually she turned into a fox and was carried on board. She Looked up at the weathered older man. He had a graying bead, was over 6' tall. Wore heavy wool coat with large bronze buttons. "Permission to come aboard? I have brought an injured man. He will be in Papa's state room. He is not to be disturbed."

O'Malley tipped his had and bowed his head. "Permission granted Miss Katie." He knew Kate sine she was in diapers. He did not address her as M'lady. Kate helped the driver with the injured man and led him to a large cabin near the bow of the shop. The passed a door labeled Captain.
Kate opened another door in a small hallway. "Put him in here on the bed. Please bring my things and basket of food. I am sure the man is starved to death."

While he was gone Kate got the cabin boy to bring a tub and fill it with warm water. Kate covers the wolf with a quilt. "I will get you warmed up."

Horen was quiet as she removed his chains and manacles. His throat was too raw to speak though so he only rubbed it and shook his head once. He was too weak to do much and he was relieved when the other large man picked him up to move him. Once on the ship he stayed quiet as he observed his surroundings. from what he saw it looked like a well kept ship. Clean and well managed, unlike the dirty falling apart sloop hed been shipped here on.

She spoke of how cold he was. Truth be told, he wasnt cold. Which meant he must have a sickness of some sort. She covered him with a blanket. She had been kind, as kind as he was told she would be. He did a thing only his former mistress knew he could do he reached out telepathicaly.

~My name is Horen Mi'lady~ His voice was very tired even mentaly.

Kate was not surprised he was sick. Wolves had strong constitutions but in his present condition he was suseptable to illness. Kate read the signs. Fever, red rash, dilated eyes, and white tongue. Horen had scarlet fever. Kate immediately made the cabin boy leave. "I have to quarantine the suite. Leave food and tea outside the door please. Wash all dishes in hot water. Please have cookie make tea and soup. An orange would be good too."

The boy left the room and in 30 minutes he brought food and knocked on the door. Kate brought in a tray. "Hungry Horen?"

Horen nodded slowly and tried to sit up, but was too weak. In the last two weeks he had lost most of his muscle mass. The sickness he supposed. He knew he was far gone, and he expected to he turned out as soon as they reached another port. After all, who would care for a sick wolf? Not many, he knew. Most he had met would rather kill him than help him. Many had tried. But his skill with a sword and shield had saved his hide many times.

Kate prepared tea with leaves that would break the fever and keep the food down. She added sugar for taste, She gave him herbs from her pocket "Eat these and drink the tea you will feel better in a few days. I will not let you die." The mage held the bowl and fed him soup of chicken, veges, and dumplings. after had his fill she helped him into the tub. She put the rags in a pile to be burned. As he soaked in the tub, she poked her head out of the door. "Bring him flannel clothes and clean underclothes please. She asked a sailor as he passed. In moments he layed a bundle of clothes outside the door.

Kate took from her trunk that her driver delivered a wash cloth, towel, and sandalwood soap. She washed his hair and cleaned his wounds, She bathed him quickly and helped him dry and dress. The mage turned back the covers and covered him with more blankets. She layed beside him. "Sleep Horen. I will be with you."

Horen felt better than he had since before his fight those long weeks ago. Though he trusted the young mistress, it was hard for him to relax, to fall asleep. He struggled and finally just gave up. he lay there for a long time silent as he pondered her actions. She had fed him. Shed bathed him, even clothed him. And yet shed only asked his name in return. He wondered at how someone could be so kind to a stranger. He knew for sure that had he been given to someone else he might well be dead right now. As he thought this he Finally fell into a restless sleep.

Kate held him close. She stroked his fur and hummed a lullaby. She had so many questions about his past. Just who was he? Why was he given to her? Was his beating a test of her skill? Would he be happy? Yes. She would do every thing she could to give him a better life. Kate feel to sleep. She woke up a few hours later. The cabin boy brought up supper and hot cocoa.
Kate patted his shoulder and pushed the covers back. She padded to the door and picked up a large tray of seafood. The mage set the tray on a desk by the bed. She ladled lobster bisque into two bowls and cut an apple into bites.Kate checked to see if Horen was awake. She did not want to wake him

The smell of food woke Horen. He listened quietly as Kate went to the door and retrieved her dinner. He was hungry, though not starving as he was before. He blinked open his eyes, glad the swelling had gone down a little. He gingerly licked his lips. They were sore but healing. Little did anyone know that he was able to heal exceptionally fast, as long as he had fresh food and a little time. He had been deprived of both these long weeks, and so his body had become weaker rather than staying strong.

He looked over to Kate and noticed it was now dark outside the porthole. It had still been noon when they boarded the vessel. He saw her as she ladled some kind of soup into two bowls as he silently sat up, then she turned to look at him. He was sure he was still a sorry sight, even if he was cleaned now. He had been in bad shape.

Kate sat him up in the bed with pillows. Then set a bowl on the bed; hers she placed in her lap. "Cookie made chicken soup with dumplings. Please keep your paws covered." Kate dipped a spoon and held it to his lips. She knew he was not accustom to being hand fed. She would earn his trust. " Hi, your awake. How did you sleep? How is your pain? Please let me know you want a drink. Cookie brought us water and hot cocoa. She fixed us a bowl up cut fruit and lemon tarts."

O'Mally has set sail with high tide. He fallowed the coast to the port city of Wildwood Shire. They arrive there two weeks later. Each day she provided clean clothes and Cookie made hot meals. Kate stayed at his side until his fever finally broke. It was just before the pulled into Wildwood. Snow blanketed the city.

Horen had healed well the first few days, but the fever had been persistent. After a week it had finally broken. He was able to move around and had more energy as he recovered. He had yet to reveal his true ability, and he had decided he would keep it secret as he had always done. he had enjoyed a midnight conversation with some whales the night before they reached port. That was another of his peculiar traits. He could mind speak with any animal. he knew some mages could do it with familiars, but he had never known one to converse with all species. When they arrived he saw the city with a ligh covering of powdered snow. it was indeed a pretty view from the deck of the ship as they sailed into the port.

Kate and Horen had breakfast, bathed, and dressed. She had borrowed from her the trade ship. She dressed Horen in winter clothes. The temperature was dropping and it was snowing. "You need clothes, a weapon, and we will have lunch in town before going home." What is your preferred weapon?"
Kate asked as the walked on deck. She embraced Captain O'Malley. "Thank you for a smooth journey and come to the manor for supper. Papa would enjoy you company Good bye."

The captain smiled and hugged her back. "Aya Katie.Your welcome. " The weathered men shook Horen's paw,"I wish you well lad. I an glad to see you better."

Kate held Horan's paw. Come see your new home town. This is the time of Winter Fest. The city is all decorated for the season. He sees greenery in the shops. The mage lead him through the main road. She stps at a fine dress shop and tailors. "Here we are. The Sneads own the shop."
The are greeted with a woman finely dress in velvet green dress and a small man also finely dressed with a tape measure around his neck. Horen is led by the man to men's cloths.
Mrs Snead greets him,"Hello. May I help you?"

Horen stared at the clothes. He had not been comfortable wearing them, though he knew for modesty's sake he had no choice on the ship. Then Lady Kate had offered him a weapon. He had been so surprised that he had declined one and instead just stayed with her through the town as she had pointed out the shops. When they had entered the clothing establishment he had almost asked to not go in. he looked at his Lady with pleading eyes.

"Lady Kate..... I do not wish to wear anything here....... I am accustomed to only two types of clothing..... These are very uncomfortable.." He tried to keep dignity in his voice, though he had held down the volume afraid to be disciplined if she was offended.

Kate held his arm,'I know your not. I will not let you dress as a slave or warrior. You belong to the house on Lord Lyons

Kate excused the Sneads and spoke to him in private. "I know you not accustom to being dressed as a member of a nobles house. You will not dress as a slave nor as a warrior. I will keep your clothes as an upper class of your species. It is winter. Your fur is not enough. You cannot go naked. You will get used to clothes in time. I want you to look nice. You also need work clothes and a formal. We host a lot of balls and banquets, especially this time of year."

Kate picked outfits in earth tones and tribal. The outfits were animal leather and had intricate bead work and feathers. She was happy to dress him in deer skin tunic and matching pants. Along with poets shirt and dark blue breeches. She chose a formal in assorted leathers and fancy beads. Is this more to your liking?"

Horen had to admit, the hides and leather were more comfortable than the flannel clothing had been. It reminded him of his old leather armor which he so sorely missed. He heard Lady Kates words and while he accepted them he was somewhat saddened. Being a fighter had been the only thing that let him feel free, and now he was one no longer. he only hoped that as a Noble House that the manor had a practice yard in which he could still practice his skill.

"Yes Lady Kate..... These are much better than the flannel clothing." He kept his answers short and he tried to keep his protests inside as ell. he supposed he had been lucky not to be disciplined, so he dared not push his luck with his questions.

Kate pet his arm. She loved the feel of his velvety fur skin. Horen you may speak freely. My hands heal not hurt. I will never punnish you. The whip is for horses and then sparingly. I do not want you to fear me. I will not allow anyone to hurt you.

"What weapon did you fight with?" Kate swept his bangs out of his face. "Hold you head up. You eyes say more words then your voice. Do not hide them from me. They are lovely. I want to know what you are feeling. Do not hide your emotions. You are a man first. Wolf second. I will treat you as a man not an animal."

He looked at her with something akin to respect and awe mixed. But there was also uncertainty. He had met many humans in his time. He had fought many of them. They had no respect for beast-kin. Most had viewed him as below them, below human. To them he was no better than the animal he so closely resembled. He thought on her words from earlier. Of being a noble. Could he be a noble? To rise above his past and have a better future. he had a hard time seeing it. He knew not many humans would accept it either. He fully expected Lady Kates family to denounce him, to put him back in the chains which she had removed.

"I used hammers Lady Kate. I preferred not to kill, only to do enough damage to win without death. Most often it worked. though I have been forced to kill on many occasions. I do not enjoy such acts. I can use swords and axes fairly well. And I am very accurate with the bow. I was a hunter and a fighter for the Mistress." He said in a low voice. It was still not quite recovered from his long sickness and the choking of the collar.
