The third week of summer; it was at this time exactly one hundred years ago that Reese and his friends put down the wicked god, Yuzuzikel, earning themselves a place among the divine and founding a new pantheon. Reese was spending his days among the common people. He spent his first few decades as a divine being in his realm, but after awhile, he missed the lackluster-ness of the mortal world. So he left, making his home in a small town a few days walk way from his realm. At first, the people were ecstatic that a hero-- not only a hero, but a god would join their number. But now, a few decades later, the people are used to his presence. He got a small job as a gas station attendant at the town's only gas station.
He spent his break like normal, feet up in the break room watching the news on the tiny 16 inch television that the old man who ran the gas station was way too cheap to upgrade.
"Now more on a developing story. A strange discovery has been made in the northeastern United States. On the scene is correspondent from KZL News, Todd Huffman." Reese turned the TV up, interested in what kind of discovery was made. The image on the TV changed from the woman in the news room to a man who was standing outside of a gate topped with razor wire. Other reporters were there too, reporting on the same thing. The man smiled and spoke.
"Thanks Kate. I'm here in front of the site where a strange object was discovered after, and i'm not lying, FALLING OUT OF THE SKY. The US government was quick to take control of the site and shut down the media. No unauthorized non-Government personnel are allowed inside these gates." He turned and gestured towards the gates. "Eyewitnesses describe the object as "a long sword about six FEET long with strange writing inscribed in the blade and a long handle."" Reese sat up, his jaw dropping. He stared at the TV. Could it be...? After all these years...? "We're waiting for a press conference with the president, who promised to address the public about this discovery at seven o'clock tonight. We'll be airing that when it happens. That's all for now. We'll keep you folks updated." Reese shut off the TV. "Old man!" He shouted. "I'm clocking out early. Get someone to take over for me!" He shouted, heading out the break room door to the outside world, leaving behind the old man who was likely yelling at him to get back to work.
Cyrus went directly to his home, shutting and locking the door behind him. He stepped in front of a painting in his bedroom. Reese moved the painting. A safe was embedded into the wall. There were four dials on the surface of the safe. After Reese entered the combination on each dial, the safe popped open. Inside was a large envelope full of money and a couple of gold bars. Reese pushed on the back of the safe. It gave way, enabling Reese to take the false back out. Inside was a hammer. It had a thick, yet short handle and was topped with a rectangular hammerhead. There were many inscriptions and symbols on the hammerhead as well as the handle.
This was Mjolnir, once the hammer of Thor, the god of thunder, now the hammer of Reese, the god of glory. Reese picked up the hammer. His muscles visibly bulged at the weight. "Oof... damn, its been awhile." He took a moment to get used to the weight again. "Okay, time to go." He went out in his backyard, throwing the hammer, but very quickly grabbing the handle after he threw it. One might have expected the hammer to stop flying, but it kept going, taking Reese with it. Using the hammer for flight was a technique that took a very long time to master. Reese put more force downward, causing himself to go higher in the sky, above the houses, above the people, and off to the northeast to identify if this item was indeed what he thought it was.
