Hello everyone, I have an idea for an rp setting that I'd like to see built up into a full universe, with the help of a partner or partners of course! The main idea is a post-apocalyptic world that has returned to the medieval ages in terms of governments, societies and some technology, but also has some of the futuristic techs from before the apocalypse that now survive on as 'magic.' The rp would take place in New York City, which will have devolved into five distinct kingdoms, each reflecting one of the city's five boroughs.
Here are some bullet point ideas that I would love help expanding on through rping with any interested partner who also loves building up worlds while rping:
* There are two main artifacts left over from the pre-apocalyptic future times: 3D printing and wireless energy transmission. 3D printing will have advanced to the point where small personal printers can quickly break down and rebuild certain materials that pervade society. In the post-apocalyptic setting that the rp will take place in, this ability will be known as engineering, and those people who use this technology will be known as engineers - a term that will be synonymous with alchemists - mad men, potentially dangerous and possibly satanic, who have the ability to change the world around them.
The wireless transmission of energy will involve a semi-religious organization known as the Electricians Guild, who help maintain some working semblance of electrical power in the five kingdoms by collecting and distributing energy from the rooftop solar panels that coat the city. The Guild will rival the secular kings in terms of political power because of their ability to entrance the population with their cultic blend of science and religion. These electricians will, along with being similar to priests, also be considered the magicians of society. In fact, 'electric' and 'electrical' will be this society's words for 'magic' and 'magical.'
The delicate balance of power within the kings' courts, between the Electricians Guild, the engineers and the various knights and lords, will be an ever-present backdrop to the rp.
*The Crabs - outside of the five kingdoms is a desolate wasteland where few dare venture, as the outside world is populated by a primitive race known as the crabs, or crabmen. In fact these are the descendants of those who survived the radiation from the apocalypse, and have since become cancerous mutants [Cancer = crab, get it? :) ] Aside from being primitive and cannibalistic, the crabs are immensely strong and their tissues are incredibly regenerative, although any regeneration increases the cancer tissue's mass and makes them subsequently more and more monstrous and grotesque.
*The technology - here's where we need to be a little careful I think, because there will be so many anachronisms in the rp that it could prove too jarring if not handled correctly. I like the ideas of swords, shields, axes, etc. I also like there being guns. What is the balance between them? Same thing with horses and automobiles. Does radio work? Do smartphones? Etc, etc - lot of balance to find with the disparate levels of technology so the world has the right blend of futuristic and medieval without falling apart.
*Romance of the Five Boroughs - If you don't know it, this title is an homage to The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a work of semi-historic literature detailing the period of Chinese history after the fall of the Han dynasty. The saga chronicles the three kingdoms that arise from the ashes of the fallen dynasty, following the many generals and lords through battles, political intrigue and the like. Really an exciting epic, and I'd like to bring some of that to the rp. So the plot is totally open to discussion based on your own interests and the further development of this world, but I would say some great tent poles would be the various skirmishes between the five kingdoms, the diplomacy and initrigue of the different factions, and the lives of the great people who live and rise to renown during this time.
Let me know if you're interested. I'm open to 1x1 or smallish groups depending on the response. Thanks!
