LaFeux – City of the Crys

A steam-punk city-state where the government is run by the under-the-table dealings of a business that has a complete monopoly on the most valuable commodity in the world: Magic. But it meets opposition at every turn, from the corpses of Lafeux’s citizens to its very own employees.

Lafeux
The city of LaFeux is situated alongside a mountain range known as Harleos. It is from the recesses of these peaks that the Crys is mined in its raw form. Thirty-seven individual mines extend down its length casting its face in steel and copper. On the other side of the mountain range is the Salt Swamps, which extend into the ocean. On the flatlands leading up to the mountain lays Lafeux’s industrial sector. While mostly Crys refinement facilities, there are also many other factories which toil ceaselessly to meet the demand for goods. North, along the river, leads to the sea where sits the Warf District. Here great barges bearing their loads of refined Crys load massive steamships from foreign nations. This is also where a majority of luxury item trade occurs, therefore leading to the rise of the Grandior District slightly inland from the harbour; the realm of the rich. Mostly occupied by the mine and big business owners. Further South is the Crafters District. Here are homed the middle-class citizens. As one heads back East to Harleos, the standard of living drops with proximity to the mines, falling from relative wealth to slums to the shanty towns where the majority of the miners and their families dwell.

The Congression
All the mines fall under the control of The Congression. While those in the Grandior district may own a part of the mines and share in the profits rendered, the management and operations lay in the palm of a board of eight boardmen elected by the shareholders. But as long as the return on investment proves sufficient, the mine owners are quite happy to spend their days in decadence without concern for the conduct of the boardmen. Although LaFeux possesses its own government its policy, in practice, is set by The Congression in no small part due to the significant under-the-table payments. Thus the city is ruled by The Congression, and by proxy the boardsmen. Due to The Congression’s monopoly on Crys production, this blatant corruption is ignored by the other city-states for fear of having their supply of Crys withheld.

On Crys and Magic
It is theorised that magical energy once suffused the world, but for reason undetermined coalesced into the milky red crystal-like structure known as Crys. Another theory states that the magical energy permeates the land and that the Crys focuses and collects that energy, but due to the slow nature of this process it cannot be confirmed that depleted Crys replenishes its store of energy. What is known is that without a ready supply of Crys magic is impossible. While a trained person can withdraw this energy and manifest it according to their will, but it is much easier, and more accessible, to have the power manifest as heat through the device known as Kilgrev’s Focual Apparatus. This device uses the magical energy of the Crys to heat the water in a boiler until it is steam. The pressure is then released to power mechanical devices. All devices using Crys as a power source must be sanctioned by the” Governmental Bureau for Safe Mechanica.” Though masqueraded as a government initiative, this department is firmly under the control of The Congression who reject sanctioning for all devices that may threaten their monopoly over the Crys, or their control over LaFeux. The repercussions of possessing, manufacturing, or in any way procuring an unsanctioned construct is indefinite imprisonment or immediate execution.
The manifestation of magic through one’s own person, and subject to their will, is known as Unbound magic. This is outlawed by The Congression for “being dangerously difficult to moderate, and thus devastatingly detrimental to the public.” As the LaFeux’s “governmental” policy is to disassociate with those who condone such Unbound magic, foreign governments follow Lafeux’s policy, in order to secure their Crys supply.

The Firm
The Firm is an organisation which has gained massive popularity amongst the LaFeux’s poor miners, whose work conditions are notoriously hazardous. Started by a young inventor by the name of Kelvin Asouder, The Firm produces specialist mining equipment that has benefitted the miners (as well as several other high-risk jobs). Kelvin’s popularity with the mine’s shareholder had provided him with enough influence to force The Congression to sanction and utilise his inventions, lest they displease the mine owners and have their position as boardman retracted. Although famous, Kelvin is an enigmatic figure with little known about his history or motivations. Popular rumour states that The Firm is a front that finances a rebel group known as “Requiem,” and that Kelvin leads the poor against the unfair rule of The Congression. Another rumour suggests that Kelvin’s Humanitarian crusade as leader of The Firm and Requiem is nothing more than a political manoeuvre to take the place of the boardmen and The Congression.

Leicherren
The Leicherren is a radical rebel group. Unsatisfied with The Congression’s restriction of Unbound magic and their persecution of those using unsanctioned inventions, they are the most violently opposed to The Congression. As acquiring as Kilgrev’s Focual Apparatus without a sanction is nigh on impossible (as it requires specialist machinery to manufacture which is heavily guarded), and sanctioned weaponry inventions are only available to the military, Leicherren rebels resort to body snatching. Using the human beings’ ability to harness magical energy from the Crys, corpses are returned to a semblance of life. Though they are not capable of executing orders, they wreak havoc in areas where they are released and oft times Leicherren seem to let loose these abominations simply to cause destruction.

Warders
The warders are not an organised group as such, but rather a group of individuals who have answered The Congression’s call to arms against the Leicherren monsters. With the growing attacks by the Crys animated corpses, The Congression issued a reward to those who stop these assaults. The corpses are exceptionally difficult to destroy as the Crys fragment animating it must be removed or destroyed. Any part still attached to the fragment will continue to thrash and grope, and as the fragment can be implanted in most of the corpse, the entire torso and head may have to be destroyed to eliminate the creature. Once the corpse is destroyed The Congression offers a reward to those who present a head of an (infinitely less) animated cadaver. The animation process leaves a distinct green charring around the eyes, as though it had been burned in a strange fire. The warders (or at least those who survive) make a living as mercenaries for The Congression.

I'm not really sure where to go with this plot. I have several ideas so if you're interested, give a shout about which one interests you.

1. Action / Adventure: A group of Warders have banded together and go about collecting the heads of the Abominations, until they stumble into something bigger than themselves. A classic DnD styled dungeon crawler (city crawler?) until they come across something or someone they have to overcome. It can possibly end up dealing with some great Leicherren plot.

2. Politicking / Intrigue: Requiem activity increases, disrupting Crys supply, destroying factories, worker protests, missing weapon shipments. Revolt occurs in the street and Kelvin comes forward as Requiem's leader and attempts a coup. This can even extend into the establishment of Kelvin's rule and a possible disillusionment with his followers as he maintains the oppressive regime.

3. If you have an idea >Insert here.< I'm pretty much open to ideas. I kinda just created the world without a specific plot on mind (which is the opposite of what I normally do) so feel free to send me a PM if you're keen on plotting.

So. . . It's been about four years since I created this RP and I've been offline for most of that time. I still like this idea, although I'm not too set on the plots. If some folks are interested in this RP I would like to give this a run.
