The Zone of Alienation, or simply "The Zone," is the 60 km wide area of exclusion that was set up around the Chernobyl NPP following the 1986 disaster and perverted by the second Chernobyl disaster in 2006.
The Zone of Alienation stretches between the borders of Ukraine and Belarus, and is kept protected by the Ukrainian authorities. Due to the radical decrease in human presence and activity, wildlife has flourished in the Zone and the area is often described as having been "reclaimed by nature". Following the 2006 disaster, animals and plants have been grotesquely mutated and deadly anomalies abound. Wildlife roams freely in the remains of the former USSR.
Supposedly, the area is kept under lockdown by the military. However, the prospect of lucrative looting and treasure hunting has led a large number of opportunists known as Stalkers to jump fence into The Zone itself. These people are either operating for themselves, or in factions. Among the more notable groups are Duty, Freedom and the Ecologists.
Research is constantly ongoing to find out the nature and origin of The Zone, as well as a means to counter it. There are many different beliefs concerning the truth of, and reasonable response to, The Zone. For example, Duty members are attempting to "fight the Zone" while Freedom believes that the entire area is a gift to mankind and should be shared equally by all of humanity. During the course of multiple years, some people have expressed concern that the Zone may be growing and increasing its influence on the world.
If you choose to read the history on the Wikipedia page below, realize the events in this roleplay will happen prior to 2012. The main goal of our group will be, after setting up some character background and starting events, to reach Pripyat. It's worth noting that this is considered a modern roleplay, but realize people inside the Zone will not have the best gear available. They are generally poor, and tend to steal or scavenge rather than buy. I want this to be a group roleplay of up to ten people. Of that ten, only two may be considered support gunners, that is, using heavy weapons. Five may be riflemen, that is, using assault weapons. Three may be snipers, obviously using sniper rifles or EBRs. If we only get five, one support gunner, three riflemen, one sniper. If I only get one other person, he or she must be a rifleman.
Realize, this is entirely up to your imagination. It was common for STALKERs to create their own gear. Nearly anything you may want could be scavenged, bought, or stolen. Or killed for, if you'd like to set that precedent for your character. Exosuits were used by some, and by other mere leather trench coats. It wasn't uncommon to spy Ukrainian military, wearing heavy body armor. Scientists had SEVA suits, similar to a light, armored space suit, using closed-cycle respirators and face shields.
Weapons ranged from double-barreled hunting shotguns, to railguns. From small, light grenades, to RPGs. A mere Makarov handgun, to the mighty Israeli Desert Eagle. From the Mp5, to the PKM machine gun.
The Zone is open to your imagination. Please, post below if you're interested, and if you have any questions do not be afraid to ask!
