Hello, fine people of CF.

I'd like some help in compiling a list of great quotes from any kind of platform you like, including works of fiction as well as actual people. The point? There is none, I just really like quotes. So long as, that is, they're interesting, inspiring, intriguing, ironic and ... funny.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a simile for funny which started with an i. Such is life.

Anyhow, go ahead and share your favourites. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got.

I'll go first with a new favourite of mine;

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

"Over the centuries, mankind has tried many ways of combating the forces of evil... prayer, fasting, good works and so on. Up until Doom, no one seemed to have thought about the double-barrel shotgun. Eat leaden death, demon ..."

- Terry Pratchett, a genius, badass author.

Terry Pratchett yay

Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic, done up in mud brown and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer. Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end. Reality is the strip malls of Burbank, the smokestacks of Cleveland, a parking garage in Newark. Fantasy is the towers of Minas Tirith, the ancient stones of Gormenghast, the halls of Camelot. Fantasy flies on the wings of Icarus, reality on Southwest Airlines. Why do our dreams become so much smaller when they finally come true?

We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.

They can keep their heaven. When I die, I’d sooner go to Middle-Earth.

- George R. R. Martin, AKA "Evil Santa"

"Who’s to say that it takes something like a drug to mess with your perception of reality? How did Hitler deceive a nation? How can one group of people look at the world and see one thing, and another see something completely different? One sees a town, another sees a desert. One sees beauty, another sees chaos. The skin of the world.”
--Ted Dekker, Skin

Sorry to break the book quotes chain. But I like this one from a poem.

(singing)
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

- T.S. Elliot (Hollow Men)

Or this one, although you'd need a bit of context for it

What greatness had not floated on the ebb of that river into the mystery of an unknown earth! . . . The dreams of men, the seed of commonwealths, the germs of empires.

- Joseph Conrad (Heart of Darkness)

The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire. - Ferdinand Foch

Puts hair on your chest, that does. Yet it still wasn't enough to make the French fight a war.

"Or perhaps (rather than an agent) you have a trusted advisor or partner (preferably a middle-aged man who knows how to dress for a creative business meeting) who can go along with you." – Tom Sloper

A man who is "of sound mind" is one who keeps the inner madman under lock and key. - Paul Valéry

"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." - Oscar Wilde

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther... And one fine morning - So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

--The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald

"This is a story about you," said the man on the radio. And you were pleased, because you always wanted to hear about yourself on the radio.

“This is a story about them,” says the man on the radio. And you are concerned, because this is not a story you were ever supposed to hear.

"The murmur of death, a dark shadow overcast,
Ringing long and eternal as life slips slowly past,
It breeds the unthinkable and touts the unknown,
It begins at the end,

Can't remember where I heard it or the exact quote.

Bad Guy: Don't you realise you're fighting for a lost cause?
Good guy: Don't you realise they're the only ones worth fighting for?
