The Journey Home : Memories

“Attention, citizens of Fortress, attention!” The loudspeakers boom all around, the deep voice resonating from them ringing in the air and echoing off the walls. All around the people of the grey little city stop their work, looking to the clouded blue sky above them as the voice of their eldest leader comes to them on stale wind.

“All able bodied, adult citizens to the square! I repeat, all adult citizens to the square. A conference is to be called, an expedition to be had. Please report to the square immediately.”

And then it cuts, with a crack and pop silence engulfs the area leaving everyone to stand with their faces upturned, thoughts frantic.

What could this expedition be? What part might you play in this journey?

~Short intro is short, I do hope you all don’t mind. It shall be added to, no worries. Just below you will find all other necessary information so, if you would, please read it~

Some Rules

Just the basics, no god modding, be nice, what I say goes, and don't be afraid to ask about stuff you're unsure of. I'm nice, I promise. Now, with that out of the way, head on to the interesting stuff.

The Place

We’ll be starting out in a walled city that goes by the name of Fortress and then branch out into the ruined world around it. For the purposes of giving your character a backstory though here’s a little more info on the city.

It once had a proper name, everyone is sure, but it’s been lost with time and with the memories of all other things before the calamity. It’s a rather dreary place, monotone and grey. The buildings are brick and stout, built in a uniform way around the square. All are old and a bit crumbled, not to mention covered with a thick layer of soot and grime as most things are, and hold one to three families.

In the square there is the city hall, which doubles as the library, a church, now used more often as a hospital and or hospice if the occasion calls, and a small general store where people can stock and sell their wares. The area about is spacious and open and paved with cracked concrete shadowed by the details of past decoration.

On the outskirts are the farm lands and the water wells. There are three farms, all of an alright size, that yield small but decent crops used to feed the people. The animal stock is finally coming into a better way, once mutated to a terrifying degree, the animals are now in much better health. For each one born deformed or dead they have two healthy ones and so in this way things are starting to look up.

Beyond the farms there is a stretch of open space where the shadow of the walls falls on the land. In this gap there are two large doors that lead down to a cellar that no one now alive has ever entered. It’s been marked a place of ill omen and most everyone avoids going there.

And of course, after that, there are the walls, large and imposing, made of a sturdier stone than the houses. It is weather worn in some places and holds the faded marks of old graffiti now completely illegible. No one ever dares go near them, especially not to the north side where the only exit from the closed off city is marked by a slight indentation in the stone.

The leaders of Fortress are said to be the only ones who know how to open the gates and the people prefer it that way as they find them to be an acceptable, wise group.

The Situation

One hundred or so years ago there was a dreadful calamity. No one knows exactly what happened but they surmise that it must have been horrible because it caused mass amnesia, assumedly across the globe, and mutated the animals severely.

The people themselves were mutated to a lesser degree but that is a taboo subject not known about by most of the younger generation. Mutated humans were not allowed to live.

Now, so many years later with people and animals alike slowly going back to normal the leader and some of the people have begun to wonder if perhaps there is anything beyond their walls. No one has stepped foot outside since those long passed years and there is a general fear of whatever may lie past the city, but there is also a curiosity and fascination that has finally grown too large to be ignored.

And the populace is growing too.

The small settlement made for, perhaps, one thousand people is reaching capacity the last census coming up with about eight hundred.

This added to the newfound curiosity has prompted the leaders to make a decision. It is time to look for a new home, or to discover that this is the only home they will ever have.

Now, they must find a group willing to travel into the ruined world around them and see if they can find the fabled green, the land of trees and grass and flowing water.

Character Sheet

Name: (No real constraints, just make it believable.)
Age: (Between sixteen and fifty please)
Appearance: (Small mutations like slightly altered or unusual eye color or hair color are okay but don’t go overboard, try to make it realistic. Also, I’d prefer a written description over a picture, both would also be cool.)
Personality: (What it says)
Background: (At least a paragraph, it's always nice to get a feel for a characters life.)
Occupation: (If a business doesn’t have a location in the square, so that’s most businesses, it’s run out of the home. Most kids follow in their parents trade and the society works on a sort of barter system. Things like food and certain clothing items are given out by the leaders though.)
Skill: (What makes you special? What skill do you have that will help on this adventure?)
Extra: (Anything else you have to add about your character, anything you’d like to make a plot point for them.)

Name: Hue Shire
Age: 22
Appearance: Hue stands at a rather stout five feet and weighs just over one hundred pounds on any given day. She has rather childish features though she’s since passed childhood, with a round face and round body that would never hint at a life lacking food. Her face, though usually on the dirty side, is fairly pretty with fair skin that flushes in the heat.

Her hair is an odd affair, though still mostly its base color of light brown it is greatly streaked with white silver and won’t seem to grow past shoulder length. Just as well she doesn’t quite mind and expects the coloration is due to some minor mutation not completely uncommon in their society. Usually she pins it up into a messy twist and sweeps her bangs to one side or the other.

Her eyes are blue grey, the same as her mothers, and framed by surprisingly thick lashes. Her eyebrows turned silver when she was about twelve.

She wears an old but reliable pair of overalls, only patched in a few places, that she got as hand-me-downs from one of her neighbors once she outgrew her old dress, and a short sleeved white cotton shirt she got for her birthday last year. Her shoes are the standard boots, in rather good condition all things considered.

Personality: Hue is a smart, adventurous girl. She’s been reading at the city hall since she was small and has always had a big imagination. She dreams of great adventures and of finding a beautiful world far beyond their cramped little city. She’s also rather nice, a good friend to have really, sweet and willing to listen.

Despite her adventurous nature, she’s not much of a leader, more of a second in command kind of girl who only wants to help and not be responsible.

At times she’s a little away from herself, a daydreamer. Sometimes irresponsible because of her fantasies, absentminded if you will, but she always means well.

Background: Hue was born in the Fortress just like everyone else to a quiet and scholarly family. Her father worked in the city hall, helping people read the books, her mother ran a small school in their home.

She spent most of her time with her father in the hall, reading and being read to, and so learned to do it well. Her mother taught her letters when she stayed home, giving her the ability to write as well.

When she was maybe eight, maybe nine, she can’t quite remember, ash started to fall. It happened occasionally, every few years, and as long as people stayed inside most of the time they were usually okay. Her mother had weak lungs though. She’d always gotten sick whenever the ash fell, and that time she didn’t get better.

She passed within a week and Hue was suddenly left without a mother.

Three years later her father dropped dead suddenly, a heart storm was the verdict of a man who said he saw him just moments before and, like that, Hue was orphaned.

Luckily she had an aunt, a cheerful woman with three children of her own, who was happy to take Hue in. Though sad, Hue lived a relatively normal life with them and was able to grow into a mostly well-adjusted young woman.

Occupation: Reader, after her father. It’s a lot like being a librarian because you help people find things, but you also read to them.

Skills: Hue can read and write fluently the language of the old people which is, as we understand it, English. She also possesses a decent amount of broken knowledge about the world before through what she has read in books.

Extra: Will be in the possession of a journal before they set out on their journey. She will use it to chronicle the group’s adventure.

Name: Thomas Everett

Age: 37

Appearance: Jet black hair that's rather disheveled and in need of a trim, two different colored eyes (one is a light red while the other is brown), and stands at about six foot three. Muscular build and weighs almost two hundred pounds.

Personality: Distant and prefers to be alone. He doesn't like to spend a lot of time around people other than minimal contact of if it's job related. A true loner who has little to no friends aside from a few who talk to him out of pity. He doesn't say much at all, only speaks when spoken to, and usually gives a very direct response, usually snippy or curt.

Background: Not much is known about his family. Some say they were amongst the few who have dared to venture into the cellars, some say they were killed, others say, rumors say as he is clearly civil and in his right mind, that Thomas himself, because of his mutations, ate them to save himself. When he was young, Thomas was looked down upon and critcized, viewed as a sort of outcast and as a result he decided to take over one of the farms after the owner passed away so he could work alone. He has always been interested in the world outside, even planned a failed escape attempt, seeing the world beyond the gates as a way to escape the snide words of the people here.

Occupation: He works alone trying to fix watches and clocks (I will change it if clocks no longer exist), but for the most part he works on a farm tending to crops and such, also while working alone. Previously, he worked in the library since he was interested in the world outside.

Skill: A bit of an outdoors man, knows how to live off the land so to speak and is a bit of a survivalist and as such knows a few basic survival skills.

Extra: Carries a locket with an old picture inside, said to be his great grand parents, which he keeps secret for fear it may be taken from him since it is considerd a relic from the old world.
