Welcome to Templar, a world of dark fantasy where you and your allies will stand strong against the monsters from the depths, hunt them down, and cleanse them for the good of all. From your beginnings as a member of a Knight's Retinue to your destiny far down the road, you will lead the world into a brighter future...

Or die trying.

So! A few notes. I think the fun of the game is in the players, really--initially you'll have a bit tighter strings, just to get things rolling, but after that you'll find yourself with a bit more freedom as to how you all would like to proceed. Consider this the standard disclaimer against god modding, controlling other people's characters and such--as the master of the game, trust me, I can cheat better than you can, and I will if I have to. If you have things you'd like to try and do but aren't sure of, or specific things you'd like to work in, then just say so and we'll try and work it in! The world isn't as static as it may seem, and I'm happy to try and work with you.

I even provided little tl;dr boxes. Aren't I sweet.

Once we've gotten your characters established, I'll probably parcel out a bit of starting information and then get an IC up.

The World:
The region of the world known as Lantern's Reach is the center of the civilized world. Called as such for its stewardship under the Church of The Illuminated, it is a realm that stands tall in the face of its many troubles and shoulders them only through force of spirit and arm. Dedicated to protecting its citizens and ensuring the prosperity of all within its borders, the Lantern is a conservative but pragmatic government. Directed by the Hand, the Chosen of the Illuminated who lights the way, its lands are broken into regions ruled by Keepers. Finally, each city is directed by a Candle, whose duty it is to keep his city safe and prosperous. The Lantern's reach extends to the mountains beyond the Black Wood in the west and East to the Wastes. It is bordered on the top and bottom by water, and few have traveled past it to the lands beyond.

Magic in the world is rare and wondrous, but documented. Strange things happen where the blood of Gods has been spilled, and it is in these places that magic occurs most commonly--the Black Wood, for instance, grows impossibly fast, its trees and plants massive, towering things, and Depths' Keep is drowned in a rainstorm that never ends. Most magic is environmental, but there are a rare few who can work its effects--these men and women have stained their souls in gods blood, and when found these witches are turned over to the Knights of the Drowned to keep the land safe.


The Setting:
Our adventure begins in the moderately sized logging town of Needle, on the edge of the Black Wood. Situated alongside a tributary called the Vein, that flows into the main waterway to the capital and past many establishments along the way, this allows for rapid transportation of the lumber it produces, and ensures that despite the town's relative isolation it remains relatively prosperous. Life in Needle is hard--its people are hard-working and grim thanks to life near the forest, but they do as best they can. The Illuminate are stationed in uncommon force here thanks to the need for defense against the denizens of the Black Wood. The climate is precipitous, with muggy summers and snowy, cold winters, and only spring and fall are pleasant seasons.

The Black Wood is a dangerous place, and those that live in its shadow do so with one eye on the treeline. The Illuminate here are well appreciated, for they keep the town safe from raids by the woodlings and the beasts that lurk within it. Marking the edge of the inhabited lands, Needle has held its ground for longer than any expected it to. Now, however, the Illuminate are wavering under a threat they haven't seen before...

And that is why you are here.


Characters:
Your characters are members of the retinue of a Knight of the Drowned, an organization empowered by the Drowned God to hunt the monsters and wicked things of the earth. Drawn by the rumors of something truly dark taking nest in the forest, your Lord has brought you here to determine what it may be and cleanse it. You have all attracted his attention for one reason or another, but there are many things that reason could be. Are you a thief, skilled enough to remain uncaught until a lucky brake landed you in the stocks? Or are you a woodsman who showed unusual valor and agreed to this journey to feed your family? Swordsman or civilian, Candle's daughter to Knight's son, you have all been offered, and agreed to, a term in the Retinue. That being said, there are a few world-specific professions that bear mentioning.

-The Illuminate: A sort of professional militia, the Illuminate are the shield that stands firm against the darkness and upholds the law and the defense of the cities under the Candle. While many members of the Illuminate are capable of helping out wherever they must, be it with a sword or with a grinding stone, they are all of them guards and soldiers trained to protect all who live and breathe under the Lantern. Well trained, disciplined and self-less, these men and women are heroes of the people. You may be an Illuminate if you so choose, and will be expected to uphold their principals during your travels.

-The Knights of the Drowned: If the Illuminate are the shield, the Knights are the sword that cleaves through the wicked and the monstrous. Clad in midnight armor emblazoned with the chain-to-the-depths symbol of the Drowned God, these men and women are few and far between, legends for their prowess in battle and their unwavering dedication to destroying all that which is monstrous and evil. In forsaking their right to have a family or a life outside of their duty, they channel some of the might of the Drowned God they serve--inhumanly strong and resilient, the longer they serve the more they change. The oldest among them are living juggernauts, awe-inspiring and terrifying behemoths half-again as tall as a man wielding swords that most could barely raise...but these titans are rarely seen. Should you start as a Knight, you will be young and untried but promising.

-The Sanctioned: By drinking the blood of the Gods, some mortal men and women have gained the ability to create with the Gods own magic. By reaching within themselves and calling on their blood, they can work great and terrible magics, and it is for this reason that they are hunted and imprisoned in the depths, for the divinity of the Gods should not be used by man. After five years in the Depths, however, the rare few that have the potential to control and master their talents are allowed to join a Knight's retinue and put their magics to good use. Branded so all might know them, they join the cause with gouts of fire and spears of ice. Only through service can they be free, and they know better to betray--the Depths has that effect on people. You may start as a Sanctioned, but know that their ability to work magics is taxing and they are a mistrusted and broken lot.

With that in mind, if there's something in particular you'd like to be or use, feel free to ask as long as it maintains the flavor and tone of the world. A game is made fun by its players, and I'm happy to try and work your ideas into it as best I can. That being said, I do reserve the right to just say 'no'.


Character Sheet:
Full Name: Think Germanic/Middle European as far as stylistics go.
Age: Self-explanatory, though keep it realistic. Knights, Illuminate and Sanctioned must be at least 20.
Occupation: Your character's profession. Knights, Illuminate and Sanctioned are all full-time professions.
Appearance: You can include a picture for reference if you like, but a written description is also required.
Personality: Self explanatory.
Brief Background:
Skills: Why you were chosen/brought along.
Equipment: Keep it reasonable for your station. Illuminate are reasonably well armored and armed, while Knights are fully equipped with plate armor. Sanctioned have little and need little.

Eva is a fair skinned woman of average height with eyes of jade and raven-black hair. She most often wears jewelry of tigerseye gemstones.

Demeanor: (Chameleon) Eva is quite sociable and although she doesn’t go out of her way to make herself the center of attention, others generally find her polite and pleasant. She is well mannered and is known to be quite patient when dealing with customers, and also quite financially savvy. She can adapt to nearly every group she interacts with. It seems as though if you need someone to listen to your troubles, Eva is there to lend an ear. If you need someone to chase away the loneliness, she always seems to be available for company. Currently her residence is just a ways outside of needle on the edge of the Black Wood, while her small, modest shop is within.

Brief Background:
She’s a well-liked, well educated apothecary. Questions of the land and healing generally go her way.

Equipment: A few pieces of tiger’s eye jewelry, a small pocket mirror, and a small satchel.

Why she’s recruited:
Everyone needs a healer/druid, and a guide from someone very familiar with the area.

Imke is small, standing at about 5'3. She has dirty blonde hair that falls in natural ringlets that just reach her shoulders. Her eyes are a light green shade akin to that of grass and they are flecked with brown imperfections. There are often bags beneath her eyes due to little sleep. She has an athletic build and is lightly muscled. Her skin is pale and her wrists are paler still due to being made up mainly of new skin after being rubbed raw by shackles. Because she is a sanctioned her arms are tattooed with chains leading from her forearms down to her wrists to mark her as such.

Personality: Imke is generally reserved and shy due to the fact that there are few who welcome her. Her natural attitude is kind, friendly, and inquisitive. This has been pushed down to the point where she has a look about her as if she's always afraid a monster is about to pop out and eat her. Imke is always questioning the order of the world, a trait that led her to drink the blood of the gods. Another personality trait that led her to drink the gods blood is her love of magic. Even after being imprisoned she remains fascinated with magic and regards it with a certain amount of wonder.

Brief Background: Imke was strong worshipper of the gods from the time she was little. She was amazed by their creations and their powers. She longed for magic, logned so much it hurt her to think about it. As she grew older she began to question the order of the world. She wanted to know why she could not be allowed to wield magic just because she was born human. She began to resent the gods in stead of worshipping them.

When the opportunity came she drank of the gods blood. She was soon found and thrown into the depths, her naturally friendly nature making it hard for her to conceal her new talent. When Imke was offered a chance to leave the depths she accepted without hesitation. She hates nothing more than thinking of the depths. She sleeps with a twig or cloth in between her teeth to stop herself from crying out during a nightmare.

When she returned to the world above she found her family would no longer look her way, and her friends were now her enemies. She was greeted with distrust and hate wherever she went. it pains her each time she hunts down another magical being, but she does so in order to avoid returning to the depths. Slowly she withdrew from the world and became the frightened shell of her old self she is today.

Skills: Imke is very adept in illusion and plant magic. She can control plants, melding her consciousness with theirs to change their movements from what's natural. Imke isn't much use when it comes to hand to hand combat, but she makes up for her lack of brute strength by being very fast and clever.

Equipment: As a sanctioned Imke needs little equipment. She normally wears a cloak, useful for keeping out cold and rain along with hateful stares. Underneath the cloak she often wears a dark tunic, leggings, boots, and a belt.

Full Name: Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Mays
Age: 27
Occupation: Illuminate, former tailor and farm hand

Appearance: Charlotte stands at an even five foot five and holds an average but athletic build that weighs about one hundred thirty pounds, give or take a pound at any given time. She has rather delicate features, a heart shaped face and decently curved body, but most of her weight is carried in the surprising amount of muscle just below all the softness.

Her skin is slightly tanned and dotted with freckles and sunspots across her nose and cheeks and down to her shoulders. Her hair is a red so bright it often appears orange. She is at odds about what to do with the color, and since the hair itself is usually rather unruly she’s taken to knotting it into a thick braid that falls to just about the middle of her back and leaving it. Her bangs are the only things that really seem to want to cooperate and she keeps them straight cut just above her smiling, honey brown eyes.

If you catch her without her clothes you’ll see a myriad of scars from one battle or another, or perhaps an old one from a farming mishap. You won’t know unless you ask for most of them, though the scars made by arrows are the easiest to see.

Personality: Charlotte is… split. On one end you have the cheerful, motherly type of woman who easily wins the affection of the people she’s left to protect. Friends and family like to call this half Charlie. On the other you have battle Charlotte, berserker Charlotte, I will smash you into oblivion Charlotte. She is also known as Charles. Put them together and you get the whole, a sugary sweet outside with a battle-ready, blood lusting inside. All in all, when she’s normal, she’s a kind, gentle, easy going woman, just look out for the more violent half.

Brief Background: Charlotte was born to a full, farming family just outside of a small town. She was a happy child, considered sweet and well behaved by all, and could often been seen at the heels of her farmer father, tailor mother, or one of six older siblings lending a small but helping hand.

As far as she knew growing up, her family was normal and boring, no one had ever been in the military as far as she knew, done anything worth mentioning, or been anyone important, and she was fine with that. While many of her friends went along prattling about what a wonderful thing a life of adventure would be she felt perfectly content to stay home and take up the trade of one of her parents when the time came.

At the age of thirteen however, she discovered that her family was not so boring, not so run of the mill, when the farm came under attack.

It was just one singular creature, a monster somewhat like a wolf. She found it in the barn one early morning eating one of the cows and was, understandably, terrified. She held in her hand her father’s ax, she was taking it out to him since he’d forgotten it, and when the beast attacked she acted in kind.

A girl of her age and size shouldn’t have been able to do what she did, and that was hack it to pieces, but it happened. When her family came, drawn by the screams she didn’t know she’d let out, something else came out, a secret they’d tried to keep from all of the children.

On her mother’s side berserkers were often born and many of them had gone on to become Illuminate and Knights alike. They’d hoped that the manic state had passed over all of their children but it seemed sweet little Charlie hadn’t been so lucky.

They kept it a family secret and tried their best not to treat her differently but she never felt quite right afterwards and knew that with this new ability out and in her mind she’d never be able to settle for a quiet, peaceful life as a tailor or farmer. She decided that once she came of age she’d swear her service to whoever would have her.

She’s been a solider for seven years now.

Skills:

-Berserker State- Through years of rigorous training she now has a decent amount of control over this state. She can enter it at will and exit it in a decent amount of time. However, the aftereffects of this state are, less than savory and at times can leave her incapacitated after battle.

-High tolerance- In her Berserker state anyway she can take quite a bit, the amount of adrenaline running through her system numbing her to the pain. This effect may last for a long time after and if the strain and exertion haven’t knocked her down she can keep on moving.

-People Person- Besides her battle prowess Charlotte is also a good communicator, and a really very sweet woman. People, children especially, usually warm to her easily which is good when you’d like not only place to stay but welcoming hosts.


Equipment:

Armor- She wears a tightly woven, silver chainmail, custom made by the town blacksmith and purchased by her family as a going away present. Over that she wears a thick leather vest, not particularly fancy but sturdy and reliable. Her lower half is covered by leather leggings that go to her ankles and leather boots that come up to her knees. The boots are rather weather worn but still functional.

Weapons- A double bladed battle-axe affectionately called Oblivion is her primary weapon. Measured at 36” she keeps it’s slung across her back and wields it with a surprising amount of ease. Most often she uses two hands but when flying blind and reckless can easily swing it one handed.

When a slightly smaller weapon is required she has an 18” machete and a 9” dagger each strapped to one of her hips.

Note: Ranged weapons are not her friend, poor depth perception.

Other: A small pouch full of miscellaneous items. Mostly it's extra bandages and medicines but also a tiny flute. She learned to play when she was young and uses it to amuse and entertain people she meets occasionally.

Standing at six feet and weighing over one hundred and sixty pounds, his body tone is that o slight musculare value but slender parts as well, his low-cut hair enables him to see and fight properly in combat and in general give him an inherant look o deception. His eyes are one of the most drawn features of his facial expression as he doesnt hide what he is thinking, feeling or what he is about to do, multiple scars across his body from training himself in the ways o magic as well as resilance to blade cuts, as he used his armoured arms and hands to torture himself and worse to others.


Personality: A horrible young man, he loves to tease others of their own misfortune and has no respect for personal bounderies. Deceptive with a sharp tounge he doesnt care for others company neither does it bother him i he is on his own. As uch as he loves to tease however he suffers from quick out bursts of joy and happiness and even kindness at times, but quickly snaps back to his old self by physically hurting himself if such a time were to occure, however William also lives off instinct as if it was a drug, if there was a need to fight he would however he would not flaunt his prowess without a good reason selfish or no.

Brief Background: Sydney was always fasinated with the world and how it worked, he was a seeker of knowledge and a peacful traveler even at a young age, his parents rubbed off on him but when they passed when Sydney turned 18 he moarned their loss, so much so it drove him into deep depressions. Before he became the twisted being he is today Sydney was a happier person always looking to help others and attempting to know more, but his desires however were not that of healthy fruits as he was seeking the riddle to life's mysteries, to return his mother and father from the plains of the dead to the lands of the living.

After many years of searching Sydney had became twenty one at the time, he heared of multiple rumours of a crimson liquid that could give a man power without end, such a tale gripped Sydney intrest to the point of addiction in finding such a thing, slowly over time as he searched his mind became warped doing anything for infomation and even willing to hurt others, it was no longer about the life of his parents but his own, selfishness and greed intwined within his personality.

A few months had past after the rumour reached his ears and Sydney finally found it, enclosed village that worshipped such miricles within a goblet of stone. It was forbiden of course to drink such a thing and if caught the punishment was death, but Sydney was desperate. Creeping within the confines of the building he found the goblet on the stone tablet in the front of the worshipping area, without a second thought he guzzled the entire contents of the drink, a horific transformation took place that day twisting his physique into a deception of a attractive male.

His arms and hands shifted into something unholy, as such he drove pieces of metal within the area of the chapel-like building and formed them over his arms and hands, creating dagger-like fingers. He found a new talent that went against natures will, Sydney was caught however not a few hours later. His foolishness got the better of him, or so the knights thought when they brought him to the depths.

Years have past and Sydney had made a name for himself amoungst the others that resided within such a prison, as well as honing his skills in the black arts as others called it. Fear and corruption was known to the others, Sydney's mind wasnt just only his anymore and with such a reputation he was offered a position within the retinue. He was like a rabbid wolf and such a beast needed a leash and strong tamers to hold on to, only time would tell how he truely felt and why he accepted to assist such people.

Skills:
Strengths- A twisted man and a deadlier foe, Sydney Losstarot has perfected his skills to a razors edge, that includes hand to hand combat and even hand to sword due to his armoured limbs, as well as studying the ways of warfare and tactics he has a firm grasp of what to expect in the ways of formations and weaknesses within enemy lines. Highly resistant to psycholigical, physical and even spiritual interventions and damage, Sydney is also an expert tracker and explorer knowing where to go and what to find knowing certain terrains and hiding spots, physically healthy he is also unnaturally fast and possesses a lot of endurance regardless of how long he has been in the depths.

Weaknesses- Like a beast Sydney doesnt know when to stop when it comes to cruelty either it be at his foes or friend if they give him a reason. A tendance to keep those distant if he were to need help he would refuse to ask others aid as little honour he possesses he knows of such a word. His anger can get the better of him at points which lead him to physically hurt himself.


Equipment:

Armour-Topless with only armoured arms and hands equipt with dagger-like bladed fingers forr defence and offense, as well as light armoured leggings and boots light enough to move quickly in.

Supplies: Will either steal, buy or merely live off the land due to his magic.

Full Name: ‘Lady’ Mira Roselyn

Age: 24

Occupation: Illuminate. After a few years of tending to a small shop her family owned, she joined the militia when she found it was a better way to make money that dueling.

Appearance: Beautiful red-brown hair kept short and tied back most of the time and brown eyes. Stands at about five foot five and weighs one hundred and thirty pounds. She is definitely not a woman who would be seen wearing a dress; she would much rather be geared up for battle. Her build, underneath her gear, may give her the appearance of a slender woman but she is fairly strong for a woman her size and isn’t afraid to show it.

Personality: Mira is a very competitive person by nature, always trying to prove that she’s just a good a fighter as any man. She’s rough around the edges to boot, but when it comes down to her religious side she is steadfast. She truly knows how to live her life to the fullest and isn’t afraid to go after a goal once her mind is set on it. Witty and sarcastic, but nevertheless always serious and is quite trustworthy to those who remain on her good side. She does have a mean streak and can be as cold as a dark winter night, but for the most part she is capable of getting along with anyone who doesn’t try to show her up. She also has a bad habit of getting too lost in her competitiveness sometimes, and will often push herself or lose focus on certain situations.

Brief Background: ‘Lady’ Mira was the name she gave herself to forget about her rough past growing up poor. She was in fact not born of nobility at all, so the name was more or less to an attempt to give herself a bit more confidence. At first she kept her dream to be a soldier a secret knowing her mother would not approve, but soon word got out and now you could say she no longer has a mother or a family. Before joining the Illuminate, since she no longer had a place to work, she secretly earned her money through duels she has won, and lost even more money whenever she lost.

One man she went up against was an actual member of the militia who was looking to recruit, when she won that battle he introduced the Illuminate to her and she’s been a member ever since.

Skills: She may not be the most experienced soldier, only having four years under her belt, but she certainly has a decent amount of skill to make up for that.

-Marksmanship: Mira is exceptional with a crossbow thanks to years of practice due to her said competitive nature. This also makes her a good hunter, and as a good hunter she also has some experience in tracking, whether it’s animals or humans alike.

-Swordsmanship: What she lacks in power, since she knows she will never truly be quite as strong as a man, she makes up for in skill. She’s clever, knowing a few tactics to throw her enemy off, and when they catch wind of them, she has even more tricks up her sleeve.

-Tactician: While some men may laugh at the very idea of a woman leading a band of soldiers into battle, Mira does have some experience in the ways of how a war is to be fought. However, her style is a little more aggressive than most and she’s a bit of a gambler so to speak, plus she’s not exactly a Knight so she hardly gets to give her opinions. Nevertheless, she has caught the eye of someone and she has not objected on setting out on this journey.

Equipment: Wears light, leather armor mostly, metal shin guards, the standard equipment for Illuminate. Weapon wise, she carries a custom made crossbow, a dagger, and a long sword that she won in a duel.

My, significantly more interest than the interest check indicated!

While I'm glad, this does mean that I'm going to have to stem the flow of applications here for the moment--if the last few people from the int-check post characters then we'll be full, full, full, and I won't let them be hedged out. Five to seven people is about perfect for what I was looking for, and if I'm right in my off-the-top-of-the-head-estimate then there are two people left who might post an application but haven't yet.

Excellent characters everyone! I think they'll work well in the story and have an interesting group dynamic between them and the world around them. I'll be working on sending you private messages either solidifying things in your background, adding a few details that you would be privy too and should know, or asking for a few refining changes as necessary, but consider them all accepted. While the weekends are usually a busy time for me, I'll work on getting the IC and starting information up as soon as I can. With luck I'll have it up by tomorrow, at worst I'll have it up by Monday.

Edit: With Sound-of-Silence's application, I think there's only one more we're waiting on. Reality may or may not have been pity-joining my game, so I can't tell for sure if she'll throw one up, but we'll see either way.

In the meantime, if you get the chance familiarize with one another! A healthy ooc chat is a good sign, and if you've things like messengers and such to play around with I encourage it 'cause I'm nosy like that.

Edit: As I wrote this Silence threw up his application, which is complete nonse--I mean, accepted with full marks!--and we should just be waiting on one more application. Since Reality may or may not have been trying to pity-join early on, we'll just see what crops up.

Had a bit of time handy, so I managed to throw up an opening post!

In general, Sanctioned characters probably came in a caravan from Depths Keep, unless you've a reason that you made it there on your own. Illuminate characters have probably been there for at least a little while now, and were probably ordered to show up by their superiors. Non-illuminate characters were probably either given the letter mentioned in the OOC or told to show up by a messenger. Feel free to throw in details, make up people, or generally contribute to your characters world as much as you like insofar as it doesn't mess with what's already established and let's get this ball rolling!

Full Name: Tilasra Underleaf. Goes by Til, but never Tilly.

Age: 19

Occupation: Part time thief, part time gofer, full time servant

Appearance: In another life, Til would have made a better boy. Though not exceptionally tall she is lanky and slim, vaguely reminiscent of a knife in the way she carries herself. She would be passably attractive if she wasn't constantly scowling and/or glaring. Her murky blonde hair would also be pretty if she took care of it, but most of the time it's unkempt and braided down her back to keep it out of her way. Her skin is healthy and tan in the months where sun is available, in the winter it quickly becomes sickly pale. Her only redeeming feature are her eyes, honey-colored and bright, an attractive element that she can't cover up despite her best efforts.

Personality: If Til's appearance is that of a teenage boy, her personality matches in broodiness and rebellion. She's quick to curse and snap when she feels inclined to talk at all, and looks down on others almost universally. She has a low opinion of herself and hates having attention drawn to her, but secretly she believes she has the one up on most everybody and will react defensively if confronted by someone she thinks might have an advantage over her. Under her snippy exterior, however, Til is vulnerable and impressionable and intensely loyal. She longs to be approved of and sheltered, and will latch on to someone who takes a genuine interest in her well-being without accepting her attitude. (tl;dr, a tsundere, this one is.)

Brief Background: Til grew up in a house with a drunk stepfather, forced to hone her skills in stealth and theft to survive her inebriated, irresponsible parent's needs. After an especially vicious fight with him, Til's stepfather disappeared. Til became Eva's devout servant in the aftermath.

Skills: Til is a master of unsavory talents. Her skills in stealth and thievery are without equal, and in reconnaissance she is unmatched, and she can survive in the woods almost indefinitely via hunting small game and knowing where to sleep and what not to put in your mouth. She also has (mysteriously) developed a host of domestic skills, from cooking and laundry to gardening.

Equipment: A hunting knife and throwing knife, bow and arrows, a fine set of lockpicks (stolen), and general traveling goods one would find in a reasonable knapsack.
