Alright lads, it's time to set sail aboard the Dreadnought. Below you'll find the typical rank-and-file and a little description of each. For one-person roles, I'll cross the title off the list as those roles are filled. Captain - The Captain has absolute control only in a battle. In everyday life, Captains do not have much more rights than any other crewmember. Even sail courses are determined by voting. First Mate - Ranks just below the Captain. Would take charge of the ship, should the Captain no longer be able to perform his duties. Sailing Master - In charge of navigation and sailing. In-general, the most well educated person aboard the ship aside from the medical staff, as charts in those days required much math and navigational skills, as well as a high degree of ingenuity because charts in those days were often inaccurate or nonexistent. Gunner - Leader of small-man groups that armed the artillery. Usually aimed the cannons themselves. A difficult position to man, at least on a pirate ship rather than the Queen's armada, because pirate rarely wanted to destroy the ships - but rather, disable them for plundering. Powder Monkeys - Young men, aged usually 12 or 13, in charge of the most dangerous position on the ship. Assisted gun crews in loading, cleaning, and firing the artillery. Boatswain - Junior officer that supervises all day-to-day activities aboard the ship, with duties ranging from anchoring, to issuing orders to cleaning staff, to obtaining naval provisions. Reports directly to the Captain or First Mate. Surgeon - Not typical of a pirate ship, but not all that terribly uncommon for crews to kidnap and force a surgeon to provide them services. Often worked with the barest of tools, and none of them very sanitary. In lieu of a surgeon, a carpenter on the crew would often perform amputations when a crew member's limb became obsolete. Cooks - idk what you want me to say about this one. they make food. |

As tempting as gunner is, I'm leaning towards playing a totally innocent surgeon. |

I love the thought of having a good surgeon being kidnapped by a bunch of pirates and getting caught up in a whole bunch of eldritch that he did NOT not-sign-up for |

I think I'm gonna start with focusing on a powder monkey and maybe down the road I'll take a different perspective. How much info would you like about our characters posted here? Any at all or the classic learn as we go? |

Okay great, I'll keep it mysterious then. I'm very excited for this to take off, or set sails I suppose ;0 Also just to be clear, this story is not pirate related correct? Because the interest check seemed to be about normal sailors but then in descriptions you mentioned pirates. I want to know how scruffy my character should be. |
