The Interest Check

The Roleplay

Welcome to the OOC. Let's get down to business.

obscure will run on a GM/PC system, meaning that I will write as environment and NPCs as they react to player choices. Given that this is the system, there is already a bare-bones story outline in which certain events of magnitude will progress regardless of player interaction; in other words, if an NPC gives you a tip that you don't follow up on, that event will take place regardless of player inaction.

For obscure, character sheets are not required or even encouraged. What is encouraged is that you create a compelling character for the setting who you think would have a love of investigation and a drive to see something through to the end in the face of horrific odds. It is known among the circles you will be a part of that once you are wrapped up in these things you can't simply turn your back and walk away. The things that lurk in the shadows have a habit of following people who walk away.

Combat-centric characters are not the only kind of characters you can play in obscure. In fact, having a group of people with diverse skill sets is more helpful than not. A librarian might not be useful in a subway brawl with a werewolf (unless he possesses some kind of magic, I suppose), but he's a lot more useful than the ex-biker when you need to figure out how to exorcise the spirit who has taken up residence in a lake bed and is drowning children on their way home from school.

Having said all that, if the individual players choose to write a character sheet or want to use a face claim, I will gladly edit this post to include a character tracker complete with the full character sheet and image.

A note on magic, psionics, and other supernatural abilities: | +
In general, when a character uses magic (magic being loosely defined as 'otherworldly abilities' as I'd like to give you guys some free reign with this), they can expect to pay a price. Most often this is in the form of fatigue. Whatever the origin, all powers come from the same source of primal magical energy and must be channeled through the body of the caster, which always results in some sort of otherworldly exhaustion. Psionic abilities, such as communing with the deceased, fall under the category of magic.

Magic as a whole will also tend to attract unwanted attention from beings more attuned to the supernatural. This means that in addition to the fatigue from using magic, you may also draw more entities to you. Magic is perhaps the most useful way of catching prey in Obscure, just be careful that you don't attract something bigger than the prey you're already hunting.

Feel free to be creative with abilities and magic, though as always be sensible, follow mid-power guideline and keep it in theme.

Excellent!

Let's do this.

I've been binge watching urban explorer stuff I'm definitely gonna use for inspiration.

Alright, the IC is up! People who have read/written in obscure before may see a very familiar intro post; it is largely recycled from the original roleplay with some stark differences. A few story scenes will be recycled, as there's always been a barebones story written that'll continue to progress independent of player choices, but the story itself (environment and NPCs) will mostly depend on you as players.

I haven't talked about posting cycles yet so let me go ahead and do that. And as a whole, there will be no posting order. Instead, we'll operate in rounds, where my GM post will signal the first post of the round and everyone is free to post in any order until everyone has posted. Sometimes, depending on where the story needs to go (such as if there is an investigation going on), there will be more than one cycle of player posts between my GM posts.

As far as timing for posts goes, I'd ideally like one post every three weeks. Not one round, one player post. I'd hope that would give everyone enough time, since I know that everyone has lives outside of roleplay and I am more than likely going to be the time restriction where I'm taking a heavy course load this semester. The three-week "rule" is not a rule - it's just kind of an ideal.

All of that said, you guys have no idea how excited I am to run this; I can't wait to see what you do with the story.

Dropping in to say I'm working on a post now! :) Hopefully I'll have some time to get it up before this weekend.

@TheLostNavigator I seriously can't wait to get to know more about Michael, and about Emily. Honestly your post has me so hyped to be restarting this story.

Thanks. First post I've put up here in four years. I'm pretty excited about this too.

Hey this really spiked my interest. Even though the story has started is there any room for one more? I'm moving into summer now and really want to stay creative to keep me sane when I'm not working. (Or maybe when I am, too ;0 )

Hey @Kinetic sorry to just get back to you! Been studying for my EMT certifications and have been kind of busy lately. You can absolutely join!

The last few months have been absolutely dreadful for me, I have no idea when I'll get that post done.

I'll be honest, I really have not been proud of anything I've tried to write lately.

I feel that. Absolutely no rush; I'm just now getting to where I feel like I can write again. Take your time, and if you ever wanna 1x1 just to write something you don't necessarily have to be proud of, give ya boi a shout!

I could probably get a post up this week if I'm still welcome. Already this is looking cool and sparking a lot of inspiration which is what I think I need to get out of this non-creative slump I've been in.

I've got a post brewing now and I can't wait for you guys to meet this character. I guessing you want us to eventually wander to the train station correct?

Author:  Muse [ Wed Sep 11, 2019 12:47 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: obscure [OOC]

Yep, all characters should gravitate toward the train station. This can be in your own time - if everyone can't make it in one post so that it makes logical sense, I can always extend another round of posting before my next GM post.

I'm REALLY excited to meet your character. :] Feels like life is finally coming back to this rp.

I would love too! But my schedule isn't allowing me the time I'd like to dedicate towards this :( I apologize at not having seen this sooner to have given you a response! I hope to keep an eye on it and see how things develop, and should I regain my free time -and am able- I'd love to jump in later!

If not, that's okay too :p

You can absolutely join in later when it works for you! Just give me a shout in a PM at some point when your schedule is less hectic and we can work together about how to work your character in.
