Have you ever experienced déjà vu? Have you ever had a dream and later experience something eerily similar? Have you ever had any kind of experience that left you wondering how or why you knew that or thought that? Did you brush it off as instinct? Intuition? Coincidence? Or did you wonder even for a moment if you were psychic?

No? Well, maybe you should have.

I represent the Prospective Subjects Yielding Cognitively Heightened Inherent Capabilities (P.S.Y.C.H.I.C.), a government run program recruiting young individuals displaying potentially enhanced cognitive abilities. Don’t worry. I won’t use the term psychic (for now). I don’t want to scare away the skeptics, after all.

Our program is designed to train you to harness and enhance your mind and explore all the things you are capable of. Things you never even imagined. If you are receiving this letter, you have been selected to join our program. Why, you ask? Because we believe that you are special, and we would like the chance to prove it.

How much does it cost? Nothing. We will provide housing, meals, books, uniforms, and cover the cost of the program. You may bring additional items, should you choose to, including street clothes and any special items you may require, such as specialty toiletry items. We ask that you leave personal cell phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices at home. While you are a student in our program, we will provide you with any electronic devices you will need. We simply ask that you follow our rules for usage.

Should you choose to participate in our program, and we hope that you will, please return the attached form by the deadline. Further instructions will be sent to you upon receipt of your acceptance form.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Examples of psychic abilities and their expression | +
Empathy: This may initially display itself as a vague intuition, an ability to put oneself into someone else’s shoes, or a general sense of understanding how others are feeling without a clear reason why.

Intuitive Aptitude: This ability may display itself in many ways, but each of these ways includes allowing the individual to understand the complexity of things without the need for specialized education. The individual may just seem to have a knack for building things, or they have an exceptional understanding of science, despite never having taken extensive classes on the subject.

Precognition: This may occur while awake or while dreaming. Individuals may experience Déjà vu, they may have a feeling that something is going to happen, they may seemingly randomly think about something or someone and then later understand why, or they may have dreams that come true.

Psychometry: These individuals may seem to have an exceptional talent for reading things, appearing to be exceptionally observant, or have exceptional deductive skills because of their ability to read residual information from an item or individual.

Reality Warping: This is a very rare ability that is usually expressed as and mistaken for precognition. For untrained users, it is difficult to tell the two apart. An individual with apparent precognitive dreams, for example, may actually be causing the events that their dreams appear to predict. The vast majority of users have apparent precognitive dreams, while a smaller percentage will have some other form of apparent precognition, such as thinking about an event happening (such as worrying that someone might be in a wreck) and unintentionally causing the event.

Telepathy: This ability is usually expressed by individuals seeming to understand what others are thinking, rather than knowing specific thoughts. They may be able to accurately guess what someone might do next, what choice they might make, and so on.

Telekinesis: This ability is fairly rare and may accompany another ability, such as telepathy. Most individuals with the potential for telekinesis never display their ability. In some instances, an individual may express it when angry or otherwise emotional, causing the individual to knock things over or slightly move objects without touching them.

*** This list is not all inclusive. Other abilities are welcome.

----------

In this world, most people are born with some potential for greatness. It is not uncommon for individuals to be born with some degree of psychic potential. Most people, however, never recognize their abilities, or if they do, they choose to ignore them, convincing themselves that there is no such thing as psychics. Governments across the world, however, have recognized both the existence and the potential of these individuals. Many countries began training these individuals to serve in their government or military in some capacity or another. After years of debate, our government finally began a training program of their own, under the guise of a government funded higher education program.

Most individuals who join this program do so without knowing the potential consequences of completing the testing and training they will experience. It’s a free education run by the best and brightest minds the government has to offer, and that is all most need to know. Those who make the cut will eventually be trained as tools and weapons, serving the government in whatever capacity their ability allows. Some will be used as weapons, others will gather intel, serve as elite soldiers, and so on.

A particular group of students will discover the truth of the program, the reason behind the testing and training, the future that awaits them. Will they suffer in silence and accept their apparent fate? Or will they fight for their freedom?

Let me know if something needs to be changed!
----------

Name: Elijah Griffith
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Hometown: New York, New York
Appearance: Elijah stands at about 5'10", with a scrawny build to match his pale skin. His hair is on the shorter side, styled into a faux hawk. It's light brown with red highlights in colour, giving it the appearance of copper when in the sun. His eyes are dark brown. Elijah's usual 'style' consists mostly of skinny jeans (of darker washes), graphic t-shirts, and flannels thrown over top. He's had the same pair of well worn solid black runners forever. He has a collection of different headphones sets which he cycles through, sometimes matching the set to his outfit. In addition to all this are a pair of small, hardly noticeable unless you're looking for them, hearing aids.

Personality: If he were placed in one of those high school cliques, it would be the loner. That guy who's always got his headphones on, and usually on his own sitting at the back of every class and never speaking up unless addressed directly. Elijah, when speaking with him always seems to be distracted as though trying to focus on one too many things at once. Despite this, he maintains fairly good grades. Elijah enjoys silence, not that he gets it all that often what with his abilities beginning to manifest and all that, but when he can tune the world out, even just for a little while it is pure bliss. He also likes music, which makes sense as nine times out of ten he has his headphones on. Dislikes include now and forever people who make fun of those with disabilities. Being very nearly deaf, he's lived his whole life having to deal with these sorts on a fairly daily basis.

Abilities: Telepathy

History: Elijah was a fairly average kid growing up. He played with his friends, did okay in class, and never really caused all that much trouble with his parents. You never would have guessed that this energetic, always seeing the positive kid was hard of hearing, bordering on deaf. Elijah never let this stop him, and no one ever really brought it up until the bullies started. He was still in elementary school when the upper levels boys started picking on him. This went on and on for years with Elijah's grades and social life suffering. He would stay home 'sick' or make up other excuses why he couldn't go. His parents met with the teachers and the principle, but in the end they moved. A new town, a new school, a new start.

High school was a little better. He was still the new kid in town, and that got pretty old pretty fast. Elijah had taken to wearing headphones the majority of the time so he could both listen to music and block out the people around him, but also to cover up his hearing aids. If they couldn't be seen, he couldn't be bugged about them. He had gone from the joyful child of his past, to choosing to be alone, un-bothered, and unaffected by those around him.

It was in his second last year when his abilities began to manifest.

Elijah had woken up one morning with a dull droning buzz ringing in his head. Thinking nothing of it, he had gone to school as usual only for things to get worse. He swore he was hearing voices, not always actual words, but more of a constant flow of ideas and thoughts bombarding him and making concentration all but impossible. Clamping his hands over his ears, Elijah had run into an empty classroom, sliding down the wall and remained curled in on himself until a teacher found him. He was sent home, sent off with the odd and curious expressions of his classmates. Things weren't as bad at home as they had been at school, but the drone was always there, like being in a crowded room. He knew the voices were there, but the words just wouldn't come, again, only vague ideas of what was, to him, being said while in reality they were only thoughts. After a period of self experimentation, and many trips to various doctors courtesy of his worried parents, Elijah found that blocking the sound out with music, or even simply by keeping his headphones on helped. Thus, they became even more of a signature accessory than they had before.

He never even considered the possibility of having some sort of heightened cognitive abilities, not until the man from some government program had showed up on the doorstep, explaining to Elijah's parents that they would like to recruit Elijah.

Name: Julianna Rae Pearson
Nickname: Jules
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Hometown: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Appearance: Jules stands about 5'7", with a thin build and light, but not quite pale skin. Until recently, her curly blonde hair was long, but after deciding to join the government program, she cut it to around shoulder length. Her eyes are brown, sometimes appearing dark while other times appearing to have an almost gold tint to them. Her style is somewhat girly, but not super preppy. She likes to wear colors and can almost always be seen with a bright color somewhere in her outfit. She often likes to wear somewhat layered clothes, so she is not usually seen in something as simple as pants and a shirt. She'll add a jacket, a vest, a scarf, a belt, a second shirt underneath or over a shirt, leggings under a skirt or dress, boots with long socks or leg warmers, or something else to give the outfit more dimension. This is not always the case, but it is the base more often than not. She also very much likes boots, so if she can make boots work with an outfit, she will.

Personality: Jules has always been the type who tried not to go against the flow. She is sort of a people-pleaser by nature, not wanting to get in trouble, cause problems, or disappoint people she cares for, such as her parents. She was always seen wearing a smile and seemed pretty friendly and talkative overall, never ignoring anyone who spoke to her, always nice, always energetic. After her abilities became stronger, however, she became a bit more distant, always tired. Eventually, after her parents had her start taking prescriptions to help her focus in school, she appeared sort of high-strung, even a bit neurotic. Now that she is away from her parents, she's sort of figuring out who she is. She's in a bit of a "be who you want to be and screw everyone else" sort of place right now. She's tired of pretending to be someone she isn't. She's more confident, more willing to stick up for herself and for others in trouble.

She loves music, both listening and playing. Her parents had her take piano and violin lessons growing up, and she still plays now, when she feels up to it. She also enjoys talking to people who are different, people who are interesting. She has a lot of dislikes at this particular moment, including people who try to control others, and people who are mean to or bully others.

Abilities: Apparent precognitive dreams (actual - reality warping).

History: Jules grew up with two parents who worked more often than not. They gave her anything and everything she could have wanted, encouraging her to take dance lessons, piano lessons, violin lessons, sending her to a private school, and so on. They seemed to want only what was best for her. Thus, they pushed her to always be the best, to aim high and, as she got older, to focus on school so that she could get into a good college. Because of this, she didn't do too much in high school outside of, well, school. She didn't try out for sports even when she knew she was capable, she didn't join the student council, join a band, or try to be popular. The only place she really stood out was with her grades. She was a straight A student who took every AP class she could. She was a member of the debate team and a few other academic clubs, but nothing super exciting.

She had a few friends and she enjoyed hanging out with them, but she never went out of her way to make more friends. Those friends she had were either those she knew as a child or those who kind of chose her, for whatever reason. She talked to anyone and everyone who was friendly with her, always seeming happy, no matter what. She enjoyed school over all, and she really enjoyed how her parents and teachers were proud of her when she did well. She was generally content just being little miss perfect, just like her parents wanted.

Things began to change as time went on, though. The dreams she had started having just before starting high school had gotten worse. Instead of having one every now and then, she began to have them every night, and they became more and more realistic. Not only that, but the things she saw always came true. Always. As the dreams became more frequent and more real, she lost more and more sleep, until she began to lose focus, even falling asleep in class a few times, something that had never happened before. She tried to tell her parents what was going on, but they didn't listen. They insisted that she needed something to help her sleep, and something to focus, so she was given medications for both.

This helped her to pick her grades back up and stay awake in class, but it hardly fixed the problem. Her behavior changed and eventually, near the end of her senior year, she was forced to talk with the school's guidance counselor, who ended up recommending her for a program for people like her, explaining that it was like a university, but they focused on helping people like her. Jules didn't know if she would be selected, but it piqued her interest. She didn't tell her parents about it, though. They had wanted her to go to U. Penn, their Alta Mater, and she had already been accepted. As far as they were concerned, it wasn't a discussion.

When someone showed up offering for her to join the program, her parents sent them away, saying that they had no need for such a program. Jules, however, had already received a letter, so she contacted them in secret. Once she knew what to do and where to go, she packed up her things and told her parents. They were furious and they argued, insisting that she not go. In the end, she left, taking her things with her.
