The OOC

The Interest Check

World Information and Backstory

The Lost City takes place on Earth, in a timeline contemporary with our own, set roughly one hundred years in the future in the year 2120. Not much has changed; aliens still refuse to talk to us, time travel still isn't possible and the government is still reptiles. Reptiles, however, that have provided a large government grant to Dr. Elliott Ross and a team of military-trained submariners when confronted with overwhelming evidence (see: theory) about the location of the lost city of Atlantis. The announcement was a highly televised one and people from all over the world tune in to each seminar and speech, either with bated breath or for laughs, but these speeches are watched more religiously than the Pope's.

Technology has advanced tenfold, in a world where virtually nothing else has changed. The war for oil concluded in a truce, as the last known oil reserve tapped out some years ago. The world draws its power from mostly solar energy, but also harnessing wind turbines and hydropower. Worldwide economy has flourished, particularly in already wealthy areas like North America and Europe, giving government entities the freedom to invest in explorations like the one for Atlantis.

Characters and Roles
Asterisks indicate taken roles.

*Lead Archaeologist, Dr. Elliot Ross
Captain
Helmsman
Electronics Technician 1 - Navigation
*Electronics Technician 2 - Communications
*Sonar Technician
*Independent Duty Corpsman (essentially hospital staff)
(message me if you have any ideas for characters not listed here)

Posting Order and Time

As for posting order: there is none. This will be an entirely cycle-based roleplay in which my posts would start the cycle and everyone posts in any order, but only once in between my posts. There is a very lenient two week posting rule in place, in which I expect at least one post every two weeks in order to keep the cycle moving along. If you require more than two weeks, contact me. Let me know. If you disappear and I have not heard anything, I will skip you and you will be able to post the next cycle. However, if I have to skip you twice then you will be cut from the roleplay with no questions asked. Just talk to me, is what I'm asking.

Name: Dr. Elliot K. Ross

Age: 31

Gender: Male

Crew Position: Lead Archaeologist, expedition founder

Appearance: | +
Image

Bio: If you took a box and filled it with social anxiety, books and somehow a language and shook it up for a long time, eventually you would create an Elliot Ross. Thirty-one, single, covers the walls of his apartment with pictures and quotes and research notes related to what he's studying at the time. The one thing his walls are void of is any sort of photo of himself or his parents - not a good story there. Not a bad one, but not great. Whatever inabilities he suffers from as a person, or thinks he suffers from, it can generally be related to something his parents had said at one point or another. He is the youngest of five children with only one sister, so he was often held to as high a standard as his much older siblings, who were already well into junior high or high school by the time he was born. So, much in the typical Elliot fashion, he didn't just keep up with them - he became better. Smarter. Worldly. This put a damper on his social life, and what few friends he'd had began to slowly weed themselves out until the only two things left were Elliot and his studies.

Much to his chagrin, and though he would never personally admit to it, most of Elliot's professional career could best be described as 'almost good enough.' In spite of his multiple degrees in fields such as anthropology, archaeology and linguistics, Ross was often overlooked as a hack due to his obsessive-compulsive nature and his inability to clearly relay information. He's one of the top researchers in his field, but his ineptitude as an orator had put a damper on previous expeditions and grants because as it turns out, people are a lot less wiling to give you money if they have no idea what you're talking about. That is, however, until the Atlantis broadcast happened.

Independent Skills: Fluent in four languages (English, French, Hellenic, Latin). Unnervingly good at origami. Sucks at multitasking in every aspect except the combination of writing and reading at the same time.

/me steals this here spot for a sonar technician sheet!

    Name: Rán Borrsdottír

    Age: 25

    Gender: Female

    Crew Position: Sonar technician

Appearance: Tall, lean, and with flowing hair, reaching just beneath her shoulders, that she dyes black (the hair, not the shoulders). Her face is pale and her chin pointed. Her dark eyebrows are thick and rest above a pair of blue eyes that always have a cheery glint in them, as though she's partial to a secret joke. Has a sternum tattoo of a Kraken.

Bio: Although Rán has visited her forefathers' country of Iceland many a time, she actually grew up in Maine. She spent some not particularly exiting teenage rebel years climbing around on roof tops and barely passing any subject that wasn't vaguely related to math, which she loved, and getting super awesome at swimming.

She followed in her father's footsteps and enlisted in the US Navy at the tender age of 20, after some backpacking around Europe and a failed attempt at an astrophysics degree. She then decided that maybe sticking a little closer to Earth was a good idea, which it turned out to be. She became a sonar technician and spent a considerable portion of the coming years chilling in submarines doing covert crap that the Russians mustn't know about.

When the Atlantis broadcast aired, she barely watched it to the end before she signed up to be on the exploration team. It's not often a chance to explore an ancient myth suddenly come to life is thrown in your face like that, and she wasn't going to miss it.

Independent Skills: Speaks English and Icelandic (áfram Island!) as well as a bunch of simple phrases from several languages (stuff like "where the **** is the bathroom"). Iron constitution - can and will eat anything that sits still for long enough (which consequently has made her cooking sort of abysmal because she's never bothered). Also good at horseback riding. Has diving certificate and isn't afraid to use it.

Name: Maria Rosa

Age: 47

Gender: Female

Crew Position: Independent Duty Corpsman - Medic

Appearance: Maria is a tall woman of mixed black and latin american race, around 5'10" and carrying some extra pounds. Her skin is a robust brown shade, as are her eyes, and her hair is a very curly black that usually gets pulled back into a low ponytail during work. She's got round eyes, full lips, and a wide nose on a mostly round face, and her eyebrows are well-maintained.

Bio: Maria's always had a love for the wondrous and fantastical aspects of life. A deep fascination with ancient history, lots of reading about some rather out-there theories, and more than a few late nights marathonning documentaries about myths and legends have solidified her interests ever since she was younger. Even as she grew older and began the first steps toward a career in medicine, she was always interested in exploration and learning more about what people had long since dispelled as myth. One thing led to another, and in her twenties, she ended up as a field medic in a foreign deployment under military authority after a disaster.

The experience was mostly relief effort, with little actual combat going on, and thus few soldiers to patch up aside from the occasional armed frat boy who disregarded gun safety laws. What she did a majority of her time was assisting needy locals, providing medical care to down on their luck people who needed it more than anyone she'd previously helped. It was one hell of a learning experience for her, and she made some real connections with folks she'd been helping. As she's always been naturally compassionate, it was quite a memorable time in her life, and she was happy to have helped. The next couple dozen years consisted of similar work when deployed and hospital work back home, as well as a good amount of time spent aboard submarine vessels, taking care of people who got sick or injured during the journeys they went on.

When she was contacted and offered a chance to go looking for Atlantis, she was overjoyed. It was pretty much a childhood dream come true, and she was getting paid for it. Naturally, she took the job immediately.

Independent Skills: She can use a firearm quite well in emergency situations, but not quite to the degree of a proper soldier. Also has the entirety of the hit 21st century tv show Ancient Aliens memorized.

Name: Anastasia Jones.

Age: 21

Gender: Female

Crew Position: Stow away.

Appearance: Small, short, and tan. Her hands are full of callouses and her arms muscled. Her auburn hair is kept chin length, pinned behind her ears. Her blue eyes break up her otherwise monotone coloring. She's always smiling, her enthusiasm for life radiating off of her.

Bio: Her parents were archaeologists. When she was 6 they took their work full time onto ships, bringing her with them. At first, she was young and her grasp of their work didn't extend beyond, "We're treasure hunting, but for cities." As she grew older, her parent's enthusiasm became her own, and talks about their work were often done over dinner and family time. She absorbed it all.

She grew up on boats and submarines, using her hyper active imagination to turn small boat nooks into underwater caves, and her cat, Mr.Eel, into a fierce shark. Despite the isolation, and the homeschooling, it was some of the best years of her life. Then the boat capsized. The coast guard found her, days later, delirious on a piece of driftwood. On her had been a neckless with a GPS unit embedded in it, gifted to her by her parents when they first brought her aboard, all those years ago. The precaution saved her life. She was the sole survivor.

The coast guard called it all a mechanical malfunction and sent her off to an aunt she didn't click well with. She tried to speak out, but when meds and therapy were introduced, she stopped talking about that day. Instead, she pushed herself into her studies, graduating high school at 15, and gaining a bachelors in archeology at 20. She was a year into her masters when Dr.Ross's broadcast aired. She dropped everything.

Independent Skills: She's intuitive, great at reading other's faces. She can navigate with the stars and swears she can sail any ship out there. Also, she can knit a mean hat. Pay for the yarn, and she can make you one too.

Have begun working on a character sheet, and this might not even become an issue, but just figured I'd let you know: going to the island this Wedneday evening to some time Saturday. Won't have a laptop nor a stable internet connection during that time, and I'd rather not mess around with formatting, sheets, and long posts until I come back home. So maybe the sheet'll come in a little late if I don't finish it today or tomorrow, but now you know why!

That's totally okay! I'm still working on some straggling OOC information and the IC so it won't be an issue! Thanks for keeping me up to date.

Name: Karl Heinrich Landsaat

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Crew Position: Electronics Technician - Communication

Appearance: | +
Image

187cm tall, well built if a little lanky.

Bio: After graduating from his secondary education with excellent results on his Abitur test, glowing recommendations from his teachers and the respect and adoration of his peers, Karl was without direction. He had no idea of what he wanted from life. His decision to join the Deutsche Marine (German Navy) was partially influenced by a drunken dare he made with a police officer while in custody for urinating in the street. It was probably the best decision of his life.

Once again with some direction, Karl pushed himself to excel as only he could, mastering his initial and specialist training with an ease that made his kameraden look ridiculous. His first posting was abord the FGS Höllenfeuer, an aging missile frigate engaged in Operation Ocean Shield III, the third go round of clearing international waters of piracy. He served comfortably, but with little distinction, a fact that irritated him to no end. Upon his return her immediately put in for transfer to the Unterseebootschule, the submarine training facility of the Navy. For five years he was one of the top communications operators in the Navy, was selected for special duties twice and was decorated for exception service. But it still wasn't enough. There was one more challenge for him. It would be his undoing.

At age 25, brimming with confidence at the fittest he'd ever been, Karl applied for the Kampfschwimmer program, the Navy's only special operations unit. Unsurprisingly he was accepted and blitzed his way through selection, training and every practice operation they could throw at him. He returned to Ocean Shield III, this time a little more active in his role. This golden period lasted for a year, before a training accident resulted in the catastrophic fracture of his right knee. Although he met the 90-day window to prove his fitness, residual concerns about his knee's health led to his disqualification from the ranks of the KSM and a return to submarine forces, a decision that did not sit well with the brash young man. He resigned from the Navy three weeks later.

He was quickly able to find a job in the private market, working on cruise liners, merchant shipping and once even the private submarine of a billionaire, hopping from one to the next as the money took him. He has hated almost every second of it, but won't admit defeat. When he was offered the chance to take exploration down into the depths he was so familiar, a chance to take back the purity of drive and passion that he once had before his toxic attitude took that away was all he could see. He signed up with expedition as soon as he could.

Independent Skills: Fluent in German, English and French, makes a damned good omlette, can juggle up to five objects, surprisingly good singing voice, tends to make unfunny, slightly racist jokes about North African and Arabic people (skill or quirk? I dunno either).

Alright, comms tech reserved for Dads and character sheet up for Dr. Ross, kept it short and sweet for the time being but I'll probably add more to it later on.

Gonna be starting on the IC this week. It probably won't go up until Wednesday or Thursday, so there's still no rush on character sheets, but I look forward to getting a feel for who everyone is.

Bby that wasn't to rush you! :< I was just going to use that buffer time to work on the IC. But I love her!

And now that all of the character sheets are up, I'll put extra effort into getting the IC done soon.
