In Character
King William III (Stewart), was coronated in April, 1800; one year after his father's assassination. It had been confirmed, the assassin was a Dervishman. The Dervish held a hostile view of the Anglo-Serpican Empire since Henry V annexed the former Serpican territories. King Otto IV of the Dervish Empire has been vying for a reason to go to war with the Anglo-Serpican Empire since he took the throne twelve years ago. It is rumored he commissioned the assassin who killed the Anglican King. There is no evidence to justify this claim. In either case, the two nations are presently arming for war. This is a war that may be fought in York, the north rather than the mountains to the Northwest.

The Emperor, King William has asked you to take command of a Corps in his Army. He has commissioned Sir Lawrence Weatherby, the Duke of Cornwall to Command the Anglo-Serpican Army in the field. He is your immediate superior during the upcoming military operations. Your Corps is composed of Predominantly new recruits (green) with one ninth of your Corps consisting of experienced (yellow), veteran (red) or elite troops (black). Depending on how many Corps are established for operations against the Dervish, Lord Weatherby may promote a few of his Corps Commanders to (full) General or Field Marshal.

Out of Character
You portray the role of a Corps Commander, holding the rank of Lieutenant General, commanding a corps of 10,000 to 60,000 troops. Your Corps is owned by the Emperor, King William III, who is a 30 year old royal. King William has appointed the Duke of Cornwall to command his army in the field. I will Role Play Sir Lawrence Weatherby, age 48 or Cornwall, however you wish to address him. If promoted to Field Marshal or General, you will be given responsibility of an Army consisting of two to four Corps.

There are two primary steps for preparing for this Role Play (War Game). The first step is writing up your character sheet for your Corps Commander. The second is constructing your Corps. Your character should be an experienced or talented officer, which means he can be of any age between 30 and 70. 30-year old Corps commanders are rare and 70 year old Corps Commanders are just as rare. You won't find any younger than 30 or older than 70. Napoleon himself was 24 years old when he was promoted to Brigadier General, commanding a Brigade. He was 26 in the spring of 1796 when he was given an independent command during the Italian Campaign. Napoleon is the exception and none of us are Napoleon. But nepotism may get your character appointed. If he is friends with Lord Cornwall or a royal, related to King William III who is only 30 years old. Your character could be a distant cousin to the King. In which case he would be appointed Duke of Somerset, Cambridgeshire, Durham, York, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Essex, or Somerset. Dukes of Chenowith, Krystinople, Tuzla, Ragus, Karlsburg & Tristan would be of Serpican birth. Naming conventions should apply.

To help you in constructing your army, send me a Private Message. I will take you through the process step by step.
Each Corps consists of 10 - 60,000 troops (10d6). You will need to roll 10d6 to determine our Corps' strength. Take your result and multiply by 1000 to determine the number of soldiers under your command.

Character Sheet
When creating your character sheet for your Corps Commander, please take the liberty of creating cities inside the provinces I have created. If you would like to take on the role of Guards Corps Commander, please let me know. Only one of you will get this job. I encourage creating a character related to the King or friends with Lord Cornwell or being of Serpican (Hungarian/Romanian/Serbian) descent.

NOTE: Once you have designed your Corps, I would love it, if you could do two additional tasks. These are optional.
1. Design uniforms for yuor units. I haven't picked out a color scheme, so be creative!
2. Create names for the Division and Brigade commanders. Division Commanders are Major Generals (MG) and Brigade Commanders are Brigadiers (BG).

Attitude | +
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes. "
~ Charles Swindoll

It is wavy/curly hair kept reasonably short, but unkempt. His blue/gray eyes appear warm and compassionate and his slender nose, biting, almost caustic. He avoids shaking hands with his right hand, as it has been deformed since birth. He is left handed. He always keeps an object in his right hand so as to avoid using it. On the field of battle, Lord Cornwall wears a bicorn hat, with exaggerated white plumage bristling from the center top of the cap. The leading point of the cap is angled to the front, rather than the side as seen on some General officers. He also wears a fur lined cape colored forest green when campaigning in winter weather. His cream colored trousers are tucked into the tops of his knee high black hard leather cavalry boots and spurs.

Welcome aboard, Baidirai! Abernathy has II Corps.
Go to the 2nd Post above and open the II Corps spoiler to see what it looks like.
You can get your strength totals from there.
Also, I need the total number of cannons in your 7th Infantry Division.

Name: Laertes Pontier, duke of Buckinghamshire
Age: 42
Appearance: With copper hair reaching to just below his ears and sticking out like wings on either side of his head, and standing at 6'0", Laertes Pontier is not hard to miss. His skin is pale, spotted with freakles across his noses and cheeks from years of being outdoors and his eyes are light brown with flecks of gold. His build is light with wide shoulders.

Assigned Corps: TBD
Corps Strength: TBD
Cavalry Strength: TBD
Artillery Strength: TBD

Personal Strengths: His strength is his memory, he can easily remember names, places, numbers, and random facts that may or may not be relevant to the situation at hand.
Personal Weaknesses: Laertes is impatient to the point that he can't physically sit still and gets irritated by the slightest delay.

Personality/Psychological Profile: Laertes is the man most wouldn't mind having around (unless of course any extended periods of waiting were required). He is dependable and devoted by nature and whatever he sets his sights on most often has his full attention.
Background: Raised in the courts of Buckinghamshire, Laertes Pontier was taught all the basics of reading, writing, and of course going to war. As a young lad he was more inclined to the more "adventurous" activities such as riding, and sparring with other young men in the court. When it was time to set out to serve, Laertes was all but ready to leave the confines of the walls and do his duty.
Miscellaneous: N/A

Cap, I have been a fan of Captain America for over 40 years. LTG Pontier is commander of III Corps (3rd Corps). You can see your Corps strength in the spoiler above.

Name: Sir Jackson Monash, Viscount Newerth, Brother to Duke of Durham, Brother-by-Law to The King
Age: 39, going on 40
Appearance: Dead on 6 feet tall, not an inch either way, with broad shoulders and a trim midriff. His hair is light brown, straight as an arrow and kept cropped short. His face is a collection of right angles and hard lines, with nary a soft area to be seen, complemented by flat, grey eyes. A 'fore-aft' bicorne, often slanted at a decidedly rakish angle, covers his head when out in the field. He primarily wears either one of his own well tailored jackets or his old dark green and black colonel's jacket from his younger days. His preference is for cavalry trousers, owing to their durability, and his comfortable pair of brown leather riding boots, into which he tucks his leg wear.

Assigned Corps:
Corps Strength: 38,000 Men
Cavalry Strength: 6,000 Horse
Artillery Strength: 73 Guns

Personal Strengths: A capable marksman, excellent swordsman, excellent horseman, utterly ruthless and harbours zero compunction about death and killing.
Personal Weaknesses: Not exactly a social or political animal, partially deaf in one ear and suffers from horrific nightmares. (a.k.a. PTSD)

Personality/Psychological Profile: Reserved and yet oddly passionate and intense. He is quiet until the moment when he feels he shouldn't be, when he is then direct, stubborn and impossible to ignore. He no longer feels the stress of war or sending men, young and old alike, to their deaths. As such he tends to be quite fatalistic, with a sense of gallows humour that would make even the most hardened Sergeant shift in unease. In short, he's the kind of man you want at your side in battle, but not at your dinner table.
Background: The youngest of three brothers, Jackson missed out on the opportunity to be Duke Durham by about fifty-five minutes. His two elders, Richard and Norman, were inseperable since birth, leaving the poor younger brother to fend for himself against the ire of the serving boys. Over the years he learned to defend himself, fighting dirty and winning, giving only half-hearted excuses as to why his coat was torn, his face bruised and one of the serving boys in bed for a week with a broken wrist. At age fourteen he asked his father if he could leave home. He desperately wanted to be elsewhere, seperate from his brothers and free of being trailed after by his younger sister, Evelyn. Angered, but not surprised, the old Duke sent him off to a commission as an Ensign in the Durham Light Infantry, the affectionately named "Sweeps" or "Dirty Liars", eight months out from his fifteenth birthday. By age twenty-four he was a full colonel, spurred on by familiy connections, plenty of money and the ability to garner results. It was here that his career stagnated. Unable to purchase any further commissions and considered far too young to be raised any higher, Jackson spent the next seven years languishing at the head of a regiment. He has since been elevated to staff levels, commanding Brigades and Divisions at many levels. This is his first command of a full Corps. He is determined to make the most of it.
Miscellaneous: Has a bad swearing habit, earning him the nickname "The Cussing Colonel". Often counts things under his breath, "to make sure I'm right". Viscount of Newerth, a fortified border city that controls a large stretch of broken countryside along the Anglo-Serpican/Dervish border to the northwest of the province.

***

I got really into the spirit of that. I spent all day walking around and talking to my family in a faux gentry accent while I was coming up with this character.

Dadsky, this is brilliant! Lord Monash is excellent. I've met leaders like him. I absolutely love the detail. I know you had fun with that. I can't wait to see your Corps. I know you were interested in drawing up light infantry formations.

I will update the guide with both light and grenadier infantry tactics. Prior to the 18th century, Infantry regiments consisted of 8 line companies, one grenadier company and one light company. In the 18th century, commanders broke out the grenadiers and lights to for separate light or grenadier battalions. You can make light or grenadier regiments as you see fit. I set the starting strength at 1000 men per regt to keep it simple.

Updated the 19th Century Tactics Guide in my blog. I included Light Infantry and Grenadiers.

Also, I do intend to assign each of your Brigades and Cavalry squadrons élan. Their morale will either be Inexperienced, Experienced, Veterans or Elite. I will exercise discretion in assigning élan. Here is a definition key to the colored words:

Inexperienced: These soldiers are either freshly recruited/formed or have been around a few years, but have not been tested in battle. They may have a higher tendency to run away when fired upon (Morale: 6)
Experienced: These soldiers have been together for several years. They are a cohesive professional fighting force. They have not served in combat together and may stand or may flee depending on the conditions (Morale: 7)
Veterans: These soldiers have been together for several years and have served together in combat. They are difficult to break when fired upon (Morale: 8)
Elite: These soldiers have been together for several years, have served together in combat and have received specialized training that makes them better than typical Veteran units. (Morale: 9)

When units are fired upon, they will undergo a morale check (2d6). If the outcome of the dice roll equals their Morale level or lower, they pass the test. If the outcome of the roll is greater than their morale level, they will run away from the enemy. If an inexperienced unit passes this first morale check, they are now classified as Experienced for the remainder of the current battle. If they survive the battle, they are reclassified as Veterans. Elite status will be reserved for specific units; Guards, "Queen's Own", Household, and Kingsguard units.

This way when your soldiers go into battle, they may get scared and run away. Now, if your soldiers are fired upon and they run away, it is up to your Brigade, Division and Corps commanders to chase them down and rally them back to the fight. Soldiers fleeing from a fight is the Number One reason for an army losing a battle. Nothing invigorates a conquering army more than to see his opposite number running away. As I stated earlier. if an Inexperienced unit passes its morale check, they then become Experienced. On the contrary, an inexperienced unit that fails its morale check will run away and cannot advance to experienced, until it experiences one engagement where it passes. The passing of the morale check symbolizes the act of Standing and Fighting.

Status Update:
All of this information can be found in the second post of this thread.

I Corps: Malikai's First Corps consists of 24,000 Infantry and 4,000 cavalry. This Corps has the 1st through 24th Regiments assigned to it. LTG Bain is the commander of I Corps. Looking for names of both Division and Brigade commanders. Regimental names and uniforms may be provided for flavor if desired.

II Corps: Baidirai's LTG James Abernathy commands the Second Corps. The 25th through 64th Infantry Regiments make up the Second Corps. The Cavalry squadrons have been named. Looking for names of the Brigade and Division Commanders. Regimental names and uniforms may be provided for flavor if desired. The 7th Field Artillery Battalion requires a dice roll to determine the number of cannons on hand.

III Corps: Captain's LTG Laertes Pontier commands the Third Corps. The 96th through 125th Infantry Regiments are assigned to the Third Corps. The Cavalry squadrons have been named. Looking for names of the Brigade and Division Commanders. Regimental names and uniforms may be provided for flavor if desired.

IV Corps: Dadsky's LTG Sir Jackson Monash commands the Fourth Corps. The 65th through 95th Infantry Regiments make up this Corps. The Division and Brigade commanders are all named. The regiments are named and uniforms have been defined. I took the liberty to assign elan to each Brigade and Squadron in the corps. There is one elite Light Cavalry Squadron in the 6th Cavalry Brigade, the 10th Lancer Squadron, "The Queen's Own Lancers".

V & VI Corps: We are waiting on WildSpawn and Unfurth to begin the process of creating a corps. Once they do this, I can add their units to the roster for the army. If Sounds_of_Silence is available, she can go through the process too. We can add the Seventh Corps or have one of these authors design the Guards Corps.

IGuards Corps: I created a Guards Corps. Anyone else, even someone not yet in this RP can take over it, if they wish.

Any questions, please ask.

Name: Lord Viktor Bain, Field Marshall in the King's Royal Army.
---Given the moniker "The Bane from Buxenburg" by the men under his command for his fierce prowess in battle. It has carried into some courts as an unofficial title.
---Spoken of as "The Star of the North" or "The Knight of the Dying Star" due to the emblem that blazes on his armour and standard banners.
---Heir to the Duke Jackson Morrow of Kent by marriage to his daughter, the Lady Annabelle Morrow-Bain.
---Cousin to the King by marriage.

Age: 53

Appearance: Standing at 6'4 the barrel chested Viktor Bain is a veritable giant. He began losing his hair at the age of 32 and has since then kept his honey brown hair completely shaven. Despite the top of his head going bald his facial hair has since grown into a thick and full salt and pepper beard. Many of his men jest that the hair on his head fled to his chin so they might escape the constantly thinking mind that belongs to the Lieutenant General. His uniform is always kept extremely proper and in battle Viktor is rather conspicuous. He dons pieces of his family's ancestral plate armour; including the cuirass, the shin/boot guards, and the bracers. He chooses to wear enough so he doesn't feel weighed down, but still has the extra protection. The armour is a personal choice due to his pride in his family's direct connection to the Knight's Valorum. The armour itself is a polished silver steel with royal blue enamel trim. The insignia on the right pauldron depicts a sixteen pointed star with streaks of blue bursting forth from a brilliant white center.

Assigned Corps: Corps I

Corps Strength: 24,000 Footmen. 8,000/8,000/8,000.
Cavalry Strength: 4,000 Cavalry Troopers. 1,600 LC/600 HC/1,800 Dragoon.
Artillery Strength: 50 Guns. 14/20/16.

Personal Strengths: Viktor is a highly skilled and highly trained swordsman who weilds the weapon with immense strength, preferring the feel of a hilt in his hand over the feel of a gun. A very strong tactician as he spends a large part of his free time studying literature on the subject of war and tactics. He might even go so far as to study the way his allies move their troops to understand their different strengths and weaknesses.

Personal Weaknesses: Lord Bain is very near sighted. In battle he often has trouble seeing the combat so he has to have a man or two with him at all times to give him tactical data, this reason is why he often prefers to be at the front of the battle rather than in the rear. He does his best to keep this a secret. Viktor is a very honourable man to a fault and will never stoop to dirty fighting even in the face of defeat.

Personality/Psychological Profile: When not in battle Viktor is both a loving father and husband as well as a fierce friend. He gives all matters of family his utmost attention, sometimes sacrificing his political reputation to strengthen himself as a father. Emotionally Viktor Bain is very stable, knowing when it is appropriate to feel and when it's time for logic. Honor is held above all other things in his heart; to be dutiful, courageous, chivalrous, and honest is the code of knightly hood he strives for. When in battle however, Lord Viktor is a ruthless and calculating beast of war. Never straying from his realm of honor Viktor is unyielding in his pursuit of victory. He is a man of mercy though and when the enemy surrenders they are treated courteously.

Background: Born in the city of Buxenburg near the heart of the Dervish empire Viktor grew upp studying the ways of warfare. However, his family had grown pompous and arrogant as his line continued from the olden days. The name Bain has existed for nearly a millennia and had become very wealthy as it grew in numbers. Viktor grew tired of his family's prattling and chose to follow his family's more knightly roots.

The Bains were direct descendants of the founders of the Knight's Valorum, also known as the Knight's of the North Star for their sigil. With this in mind the young Bain trained in both the combat of old as well as the new forms of war that came with the invention of guns and cannons.

During his late twenties he was arranged to marry the Lady Annabelle Morrow, daughter of the Duke Jackson Morrow of Kent. The marriage was strained at first as Viktor could not speak the same language, but as time went on the couple became very devoted to each other. Love came easily asdid five strong sons and three beautiful daughters. Viktor and Jackson Morrow became very close as time went on and now the Duke himself is very pleased to have him as his son and heir. Viktor holds very little ties to his family in the Dervish lands and will hold no real place of power as he is the fourth son.

Miscellaneous: Wields a large two-handed greatsword
named Valor.

**---**---**---**---**

The standard uniform for the men under Field Marshall Bain's command is as follows:

A long coat of a deep, but vibrant blue is worn over a white doublet. The coat has black trim and silver buttons that leave a deep V shape down to the top of the stomach. Black velvet rounds the back of the coat connecting at a silver buckle. A white sixteen pointed star that flares into shades of blue lies over the left breast. An armband of white is worn over the left bicep. Black trousers with a silver buckle rounds the waist and black sturdy boots cover the foot and end just below the knee. Silver buckles clasp the boots together. Some men have extra decor; medals, the favour of a beloved or betrothed, family crests, and so on.

Field Marshall Viktor Bain's standard banners are a field of the same deep blue with the vibrant white star bursting out into shades of lighter blue hues. The words "Honor above all" are inlaid in silver above the sunburst in old dervish. Viktor believes the Dervish Empire has lost its honor and finds his standard banner endlessly amusing in the face of the coming war.

Excellent! Malikai, I do like Viktor Bain. I wonder if he has any conflict with this impending war. I'm not saying its a deal breaker, but it could be a source of some excellent story writing on your part, if you should go that way. The steel armor, he wears does make for a colorful image as well. You may want to refer to the breast plate as a cuirass. Heavy cavalry units often wore a cuirass, such as the one you describe. It was a common ornamental uniform accessory. They also wore a steel helm very similar to the look in the jpg below. The last known use of the cuirass in combat, I believe was by the Germans during WWI.

Thank you very much, I put a lot of work into Bain. I do plan on having there be some conflict between Bain and the Dervish. It's too juicy a storypoint to pass up. Maybe a family member or an old friend commanding an opposing force.

Also when I design the leaders of Corps I beneath Viktor I was going to include a couple of his sons. That's not a problem is it?

Here's my Character Sheet, Gunther:

Name: Petrojv Markanovich
Age: 37 Years
Appearance:

Image

Assigned Corps: TBA
Corps Strength: TBA
Cavalry Strength: TBA
Artillery Strength: TBA

Personal Strengths:

He has nerves of steel, a supremely confident and calm demeanor, and a glance that makes him seem like he's judging the worth of your soul. The weight of his presence is such that it makes the gravity seem stronger when he enters the room.

Personal Weaknesses:

Despite having grown up with 3 sisters, he is not very good with marriagable age women of his own class. That doesn't prevent him from being completely sincere and upfront about his weaknesses in this respect, however. Indeed, this is probably a good thing, as his cold demeanour would probably repel most of them otherwise. To the contrary, the fact that he shows his weakness here means that the women see him as less threatening, and even loveable. Whereas otherwise he probably would be frightening beyond intimidation.

Background + Psychological Profile:

Petrojv Markanovich was born into a large noble family, with 4 brothers and 3 sisters, himself included as the 2nd eldest. He was taught how to ride a horse at an early age, and excelled at his studies under the tutelage of his family's wealth. His father, Kaganoviev Markanovich, was a boisterous man, highly decorated in service to the Anglo-Serpican empire, and highly well known as an excellent military man and diplomat, having served in the negotiations of union during the formation of the Anglo-Serpican alliance.

Kaganoviev was highly exacting of his sons, often demanding higher marks than their typical excellence, and encouraged a mild competition between them, although this was kept from getting out of hand. He and his boys often went camping together in the wilderness and on political trips. From the beginning he sought to groom them for public service.

Petrojv in this regard thus grew to have a firm discipline and curt manner. He is aware of his stature as nobility, but does not flaunt it over his serfs and/or servants. Growing up as he did, his discipline and manners can make him seem cold and callous, particularly when dealing with equals. (He has no patience for being polite with equals, although he is almost always deferential with superiors, and comes across as warm and kind to inferiors below his station.)

He is well polished and highly capable, such that through his father's patronage he was appointed to a leadership position early in his military career.

Perhaps the most important thing that can be said with respect to Petrojv Markanovitch his exceedingly calm demeanor. Nothing seems to faze him, nor does he ever lose his temper. Rather, individuals who meet him often recollect him as a man of supreme confidence and easygoing ability.

Truthfully, he has a mind as sharp a thousand tacks, but doesn't care much to judge the world or contemplate over politics. He perhaps is one of the few individuals who, having found themselves extremely well gifted and suited for the world high society and politics, finds that they don't actually have much interest in it.

Miscellaneous:

Note, I'm probably going to have him interacting with his brothers and sisters at multiple times throughout the thread. All three of his sisters are of marriagable age(I guess by 19th century standards, make of that what you will), so if any of the other commanders want to pursue to politicking on the side, feel free to do so. ;)

LTG Markanovich is assigned the V Corps
Corps Strength: 24,000 Infantry
Cavalry Strength: 8,000 Cavalry
Artillery Strength: 75 Cannons

I have posted the V Corps in the 2nd post of this thread. You will notice the 15th and 16th Infantry Divisions are Green Inexperienced units. The 17th Light Division contains an experienced Brigade and a Veteran brigade. The 8th Cavalry Brigade in the 1st Cav Division is a veteran brigade. Veteran Units have been around awhile and seen combat. They don't run at the sound of the guns as quickly as Inexperienced units. I believe you have one Elite Dragoon Squadron. Those are tough nuts to crack.

DruidPeter, you can name the Brigade commanders, name your regiments and define your unit's uniforms at your leisure.

I may be ready to start soon. I want to check with a few people first.
Just so you know, I've been working on this for two months now.

Hey Gunter can you do me a favor? Would you mind labeling my troops as non experienced, experienced, and so on?
